Obyone-have you installed the billet bowtie emblem and if so, was it worth the effort? By the way I finally have 1200 miles on my '01 'rado without any vibrations. Haven't come up with a solution for the creaking noise in the dash at freezing temps (it goes away once the interior area warms up)and I really don't want the dealer messing with it.
As for oil filters, has anyone used Deutsch brand filters from Auto Zone? I put one on at 1000 miles and so far no problems. Are they any better or worse than others?
BTW, got the Major Guard 100k/6 year bumper to bumper warratny from GM rep who quickly agreed to it. Seems this guy John Flanders who a lot of people seem to know, from GM, has approved quite a load of them. Seems this guy does arbitration for GM for a living. Ugh!! Well truck goes in today for new weatherstripping and latches for the doors, intermediate steering shaft, and new alignment specifications. I just hope Enterprise Rent a Car has a Ford Lightning waiting for me...yeah right...
The creaking noise in the dash is probably plastic to plastic rubbing as that all that's back there. Makes sense that it stops once it warms up as the plastic will get more pliable.
Questions:
1) Are the interiors the same between all the Silver ado truck lines? Does the 2500HD have a bigger interior?
2) Will the resale value be better on a 2500 versus a 1500?
3) I heard that insurance is cheaper on a 2500 due to it being considered a "work truck". Is this true?
I am trying to decide between a few trucks off the dealer lot. I can get a 2500HD for about $2000 more. I would NEVER use that much truck but I really like the way they look. Plus, if I can get a better resale value on the 2500HD then I will lean more towards that purchase.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a topic going on that is comparing these two vehicles that I missed?
Thanks for your help
Chris
Well, I got the front windows tinted this morning. I decided to go with 30% instead of 50%, and I'm glad I did. The 50% would have been way too light.

2- No, unless demographics dictate
3- Only your insurance agent can tell you that
If you like it and can afford it, you should buy what you want regardless if you're going to use it. Many Americans buy in excess so don't hold back...support our economy and buy in excess.

I would appreciate any information that will help me make a good decision. Especially on the following:
- autotrack availability and importance
- 3:73 vs 4:10 gear ratios
- fuel consumption
- towing
- Z71 package availability on 2500
- acceleration (yes, it's important for a 24 year old)
Thanks
As for the dash noises, it seems that when I push down on it right at the edge where it meets the windshield pillar, it goes away. I stuffed some foam up underneath it, but that was no help. When it's cold, I just have to adjust the radio volume higher and it isn't noticable.
Have you tried checking this site out for info on tearing apart your dash? I know ryan did and stuffed foam and no more squeak or rattle in the dash.

Just click on the pdf file for pics
4:10 - better acc, towing,.... worse fuel econ.
fuel consumption - bigger motor, shorter gearing, larger truck, lower fuel economy
towing - 1/2 ton good to maybe 5,000 lbs. If more go bigger
Z71 - heck, shocks wear out every couple of years...
acceleration - 4.8L 5 speed 4.10 reg cab probably faster than any of em.... If you want acceleration buy a sports car.
I primarily ordered the 2500HD so I could get the crew cab. Plus I think it will make a nice "mid-life" mobile. I ordered the bench seat and cloth and that made the truck price out less than the
Z-71's with leather buckets that I looked at.
Bottom line is test drive a bunch of them and get what you like.
You get better brakes, axles, already have a suspension better than a Z71....just add skid plates and what's the difference?....Jounce bumpers?..big deal...nobody here needs those anyway...and the MPG is not that much worse...2MP compared to a 5.3
Resale....I can tell you that especially here you will find less 2500's to choose from than 1500's...aka making it better to sell in my opinion....if there were 40 1500's to choose from....VS 3 or 4 2500's.....you have a better chance....especially if you want a Z71 1500....which everybody has...usually all loaded about the same...
Go 2500....you won't buy too little truck that way
Good Luck

Quad, those windows look great. I like the deep tint on the back. I'm jussed pissed that this happened to me. Oh, my insurance card was a month out of date (I guess my parents have the new one) so he cited me for that too. GRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Now how much is all this BS going to cost me???

PS, a 1000 dollar rebate is on the 1500 and you can get a deal on them for 1000 or so less than invoice that way, on the HD it would be 500 or so over invoice so effectively about 3k more expensive.
Here is a copy of my take on the Gear ratio's and acceleration:
Ok, I just have one comment to make with the GEAR ratio debate. You guys who have driven the 8100/ Allison or any gm motor with different ratios have experienced this. The truck with the 3.73 accererates fine revs well untill you drive a truck with the 4.10. The 4.10 seems to REV and accerate so much faster. Trust me, most of this is made up in the fact that the truck motor has to Rev 10% faster to make up for the difference, shift at a lower speed, ect. With the factory combination of tires. Either gear ratio will be fine. If you do alot of pulling at the MAX towing, get the 4.10. If you do alot of interstate driving at high speeds, get the 3.73, should be plenty of power. When you slide up the RPM band from 2100 RPM at 70 to 2310 at 70 you will use more fuel. Now if you are going to upsize the tires past 265, the 4.10 is warranted to compenstate for the 285, 305, ect. These are just a few points that one should consider, the 4.10 will feel 10% or so faster but it isn't really.
Best Of Luck
Hunter
In addition, the new dissussion I created yesterday will still remain; however it will be more of a casual owner's hangout titled: Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra - Owners hangout. Hope you enjoy!
And now back to the subject of the Chevy Silverado. Thanks for your participation. ;-)

for starters, i have a '00 1500 z71 ext cab with 5.3. it's my first full sized truck.
to your issue. one thing you said was if the 3/4 doesn't cost much more than the 1/2...it makes sense to go with that. just make sure you can afford the difference in gas prices as well. as tim said...only about 2 mpg difference...and that's not too bad. but...to give yourself a realistic idea...figure out how many miles you drove last year, divide by your gas mileage (to get gallons used, and multiply times an average gas cost. then do the same for a 5.3/3.73 1500 and a 6.0/4.10 and weigh that into your decision as appropriate. given the same decision right now, i'd still go with the 1/2. the only reason for that though is that i have no need for a 3/4. if i thought i might ever use the full capacity (or at least more capacity than the 1/2) of the 3/4...i'd have gotten one in a heartbeat.
good luck in your decision, i don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

I really appreciate your help. I'm leaning towards the 2500HD. I guess the best thing to do is to test drive them all, as sf0383 said.
Also, from my calculations a difference of 2MPG translates into $180-$200/year (based on 12500miles/year), which is affordable.
Anyway, I'll let you know what happens.
Only bad side I see....when you hit large bumps....they can hit hard.....
But overall..much better control/feel/handling
- Tim
this sucks
Nick
12mpg on HD
15mpg on LD
$2.00 for gas
12500 miles per year
I get 15-16 mpg on my 4.8L Silverado 5 speed 4.10 running empty. I have a 6.0L CC HD 5 speed 4.10 on order. The above calculations are probably really conservative for mpg but probably pretty close on gasoline prices for the next 5 years (if not optimistic)....
Whadda yawl think?
Peter
Prices vary across the nation...
even $500 a year...big deal..$9.62 a week..
But I understand to some it matter...
what will this make Markbuck?....4 Silverados?
- Tim
New Silverado 2500HD - cancelled around July 4
New Sierra 2500HD - cancelled around Oct 1
New F450 BiFuel - cancelled Dec 1
Back to new Sierra 2500HD - should get TPW in the next couple of weeks.
Must be my effeminate side of indeciciveness.....
Previous truck was F350 diesel which I drove for 180,000 miles. Sure wanna hold onto the new 2500HD for at least that long....

the other thing that i've seen underneath is 4 additional rienforcing braces, 2 in front of the cab and 2 running from one side to the other underneath the middle and rear of the cab. anyone else have these?
our '01 also is quieter at the lower end in the engine.

worth a try!
..I know who has 3 of 'em...Mike L?

red, my early 2000 turns on the interior lights when the handle is pulled. It also has lock programming instructions in the manual but they don't do any good because the choices all stink. I wanted the locks to open when the trans is put into park (like other GM vehicles do) but that's not one of the choices. So I bought a black box from R&D which does exactly that and works great. No more slamming into a closed door when I want to jump out for something quick.
What exactly does the black box do from R&D. I installed the black box from them that allows both low and high beams to be on at the same time.
Mike, Tim has a good point about THE BUTTON being depressed. But then again, I would think that your wife would have noticed as the cab would be dark when she opens the door at night.
oby
As for the braces on the '01, these were added to help rid the 2wd 1/2ton trucks of the highway vibration problems of earlier trucks, and even these didn't make a difference on early '01s made prior to July '00(Driven some to know it). If you look at the trans. tailshaft crossmembers on your trucks, you'll notice these were changed too. If you've been around the Edmund's Silverado sites, you'll see that many people have and are trying to get the problems fixed or trucks replaced or bought back. I was fortunate to get a good replacement truck with the help of the BBB.
For mileage, I get better on my 2500 (4x4 6.0L 5spd 3.73) than Vince does. I average 14 highway with the camper on and 10-12 around town. I fully expect 16-17 highway when empty. I even got 10-12 in Death Valley when we spent many hours in 4wd Low Range at 1-5 mph creeping up the canyons.
My 1500 4x4 gets over 20 on the highway and 15 around town empty. My dad's 1500 2wd 5.3L 3.42 always gets 20+. He has no around town useage (small town in Iowa - 100 pop.) He does have a cab high shell which helps mileage.
Overall, my 2500 gets about 10% worse mileage than my 1500. The 1500 rides and drives more like a car, the 2500 rides and drives more like a truck. I like them both, they both need firmer shocks than the factory offers.

# 15057687 Latch, #15057688 Latch, #15063698 Striker. The TSB # is 00-08-64-016 It is located in Sec 08 under Body and Accesories.
I am taking my truck in next week to have both doors upgraded and hopefully report back a succesful transplant.
It is strange that Chevrolet Detriot up till last week totally denied any knowledge of a door closing problem and in this short one week time frame manufactured parts and wrote a TSB. WOW are they good or what.
Good luck with your dealer. Mine has been very cooperative.
dome overide has never been touched except to see if the push 4 times thing works. it did and i then set it back the way it was. out position.
kinda figured it was just something new, and as mentioned earlier, it is probably better if interior light does not come on. no one can view the contents when it's dark.

Gas mileage is one of those never ending debates. I know you do give up gas mileage on heavier 3/4 ton trucks, but they are a much more solid vehicle.
The lower your gas mileage, the more a couple of miles per gallon makes percentage-wise.
My old 73 454 gets 8 mpg when I load it down, which is most of the time when I do drive it. I can get 10-12 on the highway, so that is like a 50% improvement. When I get the usual 20 mpg city on the stripper and I go up to 21 mpg, it doesn't make much difference. But I think the difference between the 5.3s I see above and my stripper might be about 30%+ in the city - it's enough to make me pass on the 5.3, especially considering the initial cost savings on the V6.
The difference is I bought my truck just for transportation, not for heavy work or sport.
I am guessing that gasoline prices are not headed down any time soon - even if dubya gets his way we are looking at years to get oil past those caribou up north, and Californians would rather freeze to death than drill offshore.
wife is real happy with her truck now that she knows it's not a gas hog. first tank after driving 50/50 city/highway yielded 17.2 mpg. my '00 with 22,000 mi. is giving us 18.00 with the same type of driving. on the freeway only it has given me 20.4 even with the a/c on.

When the trans is put into park the locks unlock. That's it. Otherwise everything works exactly the same, it doesn't do anything goofy. I recommend it. I think it was $30.
If I were you I would make a complaint to his boss! You sure he knew there was a cop in your neighborhood? I usually tell them I watch NYPD Blue and they let me go!
Oh yeah, this happens when I'm riding in my friends Silverado.
you put it in park....and remember to hit unlock before operating the handle to get out!....what's the problem boys?
LOL
