I originally placed the order for my truck in early December, including the new for 2001 option FW1, two-position shock controlled from the cab. The option, even though it was in the system, hadn't (and still hasn't) been built. I waited a month to see if the option would break loose.

On 1/5, I went in and reordered the truck without the option that Chevy wasn't building. The order was picked up immediately. I got a TPW of Jan. 22 on 1/9. The truck was built on 1/24, shipped on 1/29 and arrived at the dealer on 2/6.

Once I had a truck optioned so that Chevy would build it, it took one month from order to delivery. This is a little faster than typical, but hope it helps.

Service Manuals for 1999 CK (Silverado/Sierra) for sale, bought for my 1999, sold truck. They cost me about 135 as I recall, would like 100$ They are in great shape, will include shipping, I think I only opened the first volume. Please respond to debrown@bignet.net. Also have Yakima racks to fit a Leer Cap if interested.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Has anyone installed a replacement K&N filter in a Silverado w/a 5.3 without any other mods and checked fuel economy, noticed any other changes?
  • wight1wight1 Member Posts: 218
I put a k&n in my Silverado 6.0 and found a little more power, slightly louder intake sound, and maybe 0.1 to 0.2 MPG better averge tankful. No other mods on truck. No other changes noted, other than what feels like a little more power when towing my travel trailer.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    In other words...no difference.

Mother's wax is the mother of all waxes. Just ask mother. Seriously it's reasonably priced, it lasts, and it don't cost $30 a bottle like that elitist Zaino. I bet the people that use Zaino like Grey Poupon Mustard.
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
what's wrong with grey poupon? ;)

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking to find out.

I am afriad some people forget, there are people out buying trucks and finding this web site for the very first time (and are just as curious as we where when we first purchased our trucks) and still dont know it all, this site is not a members only club,If people feel they have progressed to a higher level they should start another site for Advanced Silverado Owners posts only...... It would be a [non-permissible content removed] to go back and read threw all 1761 post for an answer to a question.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Right on, john294!!!!! Maybe if this forum had a better format and could support threads within a topic (with direct replies), us newbies wouldn't have to run the "veterans" through the hassle of old news. But until then...going through 2000 posts in each of the XXLVIX Silverado topics isn't going to happen.

But back on trucks...I just ordered mine. Waiting now to find out delivery schedule. What's this Zaino stuff anyway? Why use it?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
why use it? Cause it will get you labeled by Mother or smart99 as an elitist. duh!

    www.zainobros.com

Check it out. You can also check out the Zaino topic in Maintenance and Repair.

While the idea is good, the logic is flawed. If the "advanced" silverado owners move to another topic, where will the newbies get their info. Hmmm....maybe they could ask their question in the "advanced" silverado topic?
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
what's with the hostile attitude towards so called "veterans"? no one has complained about you newbies mentioning the same stuf that has been covered over a gazillion times. LOL sometimes i even forget what's been talked about in the past, but thank god for the search feature, oops forgot, newbies may not be aware of this technology. as far as Zaino goes..well let's just say, that if you haven't tried it then too bad for you. spend 25-30K on a vehicle and then go cheapo on the upkeep? ha ha
anyone that would do that is probably using pennzoil and fram too.
don't forget to stock up on armour-all as well.

I want a 2002 Z28 or Formula. Kinda a stripper/autocrosser. What options do I need from the factory, what can I add later thru SLP (like suspension). What price did you give.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
I have no problem being a newbie here, or not knowing about Zaino. But john294 is still right on target. We newbies come here seeking information. If this isn't the place to CONVENIENTLY find it, we'll find another web site. Don't think that's what the Edmund's boys want to see happen, though.
  • erikf2erikf2 Member Posts: 100
Well, you **used** to be able to tell a newbie something like "go back to Chevy Silverado VIII and do a search on Zaino", but then Edmunds "improved" their site. I notice that now they've even removed the "board search" option, so you can't even find which archived topics (each one containing 500 to 1500 messages, of course) might have the information you're looking for. Looks like Edmunds is in the process of "improving" themselves right out of business.

Dang, this box I'm standing on actually has "soap" printed on the side! ;-)

    john294 et al...

in post #1753, when i said:
"...this place is starting into it's repeat cycle. what's next? how long before first oil change? what accessories? how are the f-stones? ;)"

the ;) in there is supposed to indicate i'm just kidding, being humorous, messing around...

i'm sorry if i offended anyone.

and, incidentally, there are a helluva lot more posts on this topic than 1700-some. going back through the archives, i think you just might find somewhere in the neighborhood of 19,000.

damn, they just don't make newbies like they used to! ;) (JUST KIDDING, HAHA, HEEHEE, HOHO, LOL!)

and if you can find a "grizzled old vet" to email you the link...ryan's site will do for the "advanced silverado discussion".

Naw...just in a bad mood. What I've seen here is nothing compared to my duck shooting hangout.

But back to trucks, lest the overly zealous administrator attack. I asked a while back why anybody would want a 4WD without the locking differential. Doesn't make sense to me. Is there a reason, other than cost avoidance?
  • blacksilverblacksilver Member Posts: 69
Yeah, and you can also be the first to know what kinda flowers his gf gets and when she...... never mind.

    ...is a girly color.
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
Both of my 'rados have good ol' Wilderness AT's with out much problem, but my Tahoe has Wilderness LE's that just won't stay black. These things turn brown as soon as they dry, and tire treatments only last about a day or so before the tires have turned brown again.

Short of just buying new tires (only have 4k on them), maybe someone can give me some advice...What causes this or how to get rid of it.

No one knows if i can get black flares on a blue silverado?

Also whats the largest tire i can fit on the stock rims?

    Bench or bucket? whats better?
  • dustyonedustyone Member Posts: 262
I use Meguires Endurance about once every 6 months. It gets rid of the brown and has a nice dull finish. None of the shiny stuff for me. Can get it at Auto Zone, PepBoys, etc
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
is a good color for my truck.

BTW, saw a two tone Victory Red over Medium Charcoal which looked very nice.

Things are livening up around here.

I hear Ryan's site is getting out of hand and he's thinking of hiring Poca to help him out! LOL

    Here to Help!
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
I tried Meguiar's Endurance - first time off road or in the desert the tires collected brown dust. They looked brown, and the stuff wouldn't wash off. It took 45 minutes to scrub each tire clean. Never again will Endurance come near my tires!!!

Maybe the humidity of Georgia prevents that from happening to your tires, but I can't reccomend it to anyone.

I use 303 Protectant and am very happy with it. Much better and longer lasting than ArmorAll.

No more brown tires with 303.

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
It can be compared to Zaino as far as results. Armor All was determined to actually cause cracking of dashboards. Why people still buy it is beyond me. Heard its (armor all) good for marking the bottom of the tire to see if you are getting good contact and whether your tires are over inflated. Well, at least it's good for something....doh!

Ever heard of hard to teach an old dog new tricks? That being the case, those that don't want the locker on a 4wd may suffer from that affliction. Or they could just be stubborn as a mule....lol!
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
You'd have to be a complete doorknob to buy a 4wd, without a locking rear diff....
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Now, now, don't be talking about you know who like that...

    BWAHAHAHAHA!
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Why, Obyone, there couldn't possibly be anybody on this board I would be referring to....
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Understand that, but well over half of the 4WDs on the lots around here are minus the locker!
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
    POCA!!! ;)

i have been called a veteran and a doorknob today! i'm offended. where's ole titus to scold you guys for being mean??? boohoo.

yes, i have a 4wd without the locker. thought the locker was for those that didn't want 4wd when i was ordering. of course that was almost a year and a half ago. so we all know that makes me a veteran doorknob.

    ROTFLMFAO!!!

glad to see this site is getting some life back in it...

You too?! I thought Tim was the only one w/o a locker on his 4wd? doh! LMAO!! as usual.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...if you are a serious off roader...get a locker....or work on a farm and have it in the mud fields all the time...get it..or perhaps just a street driver that doesn't have 4WD skills...then get it I guess......nobody that doesn't fall into those catagorys needs a locker...period.

can we talk about flares / bed liners / and bug guards now!?....some new topics ya know?

..I'd really love to hear about velvet rides and edelbrocks too!

    hehe

mchgndr -- Ref post 1785: Then you must live in Florida! No dealer in high country has a non-locker 4X4 in stock, except for the one that showed up by accident and they use as a curiosity for the showroom floor.

I have been noticing a sound on my truck that sounds like an exhaust leak. Making a "swishing" sound. My truck is a 2001 1500 4.3L V6 Vortec silverado 2wd. The only puzzling problem is that it is doing it on both sides of the engine. My truck only has 800 miles on it. I was wondering if this is normal?
  • tomh12tomh12 Member Posts: 240
All you have to do to find out the value of a locker is cross a small ditch, with slick grass or mud on the sides. If you angle across it and get your right rear and left front wheel slightly unweighted, even in 4WD you're stuck. With the locker, your left rear will bite and push you on over.

definitely a machine to spice things up with, I know, as I went through the bike phase to the tune of 12 different bikes within a 2 1/2 year period. only once I found the one that was fast enough and had the handling I liked, I got a ticket for 120 mph and the wife was so mad, that my bike career ended at that point in time. maybe you're talking about dirt bikes, just as much fun, but probably no safer. oh well, enough of that.
I was wondering however if you knew the largest tire size that can be fitted to the wheels for the Chevy 1/2 ton truck I/aluminum wheels.
also I'm considering a stereo reciever change in the wife's '01 and i've been told that the alarm will not work if the factory radio is removed. care to shed some light on these two questions?

Ref post 1790. Nope. Not Florida. Illinois. And the dealer I talked to in Michigan said you don't need it. But after having one "powered" rear tire on ice at a boat launch in Nov...

Bug guards. Going to get one, but I can't help but wonder if some of the low profile ones flex at speed and rub on the hood. ??
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Lund interceptor may flex on the hood of a nitro funny car at 300 mph. At the silverado's top speed, it may flex 1/8" leaving an inch gap left. Of course I would question the ones at KMart or anything that has a felt pad included with the install kit.

Anyone else get the following recall notice in the mail this week?

    C00093-S (1999-2000 Silverado, 2000 Tahoe and Sub)

"Some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that may decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. If contact occurs and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. The brake warning lamp will be activated when the brake fluid level reaches the indicator limit. During braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. (duh) If this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur". (duh, again)

I guess its another visit to the shop. I was just there 2 weeks ago to have my Service Engine light reset. "computer glitch" they said. I wonder how often they use that one!!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    Had mine fixed monday

They installed a bracket and 2 cable ties. Took about 35-50 minutes (they also changed my transfer case fluid because if a clunk)

They dont always dont fix it its an inspection. They fixed mine cause the nerf bar bracket was in the way and to be on the safe side they put the bracket in.

I bet no NEWBIE could answer that

John you still wanna see the Vets gone?

hey guys...i think i saw ryan's first truck yesterday. i'll try to get a pic of it today, we'll see. anyways, it was a previous model chevy K1500...with "4x4" AND "z71" stickers on it! whoohoo! musta had AT LEAST 40 extra hp with those! LOL!

More shots at newbies. Cute. Bracket and cable ties. Sounds a lot like how I built my duck boat.

Have noticed more than once the pair of shock mounting brackets below the rear axle...seems like WAY down there...wasting what could have been some useful clearance. What's the thinking behind that? Is a below-axle mount point a necessity? Why couldn't the same thing been accomplished with a side or top bracket? My mech engineer brain just sees those hanging down there waiting for a nice rock.
