when you say that "today i got 14 mpg and the tank before was 16 mpg", how does that equate to better mpg for some odd reason?
    and the g/f doesn't complain?
sounds like she owns ya ol buddy.....LMAO

I have a Pace-Edwards rolltop cover. I've had in installed for about 5 months now, with no trouble to speak of. Mine drilled into the bed rails, although there is a clamp kit.
Another popular one is the Roll-N-Lock. I didn't choose that one due to it's more industrial look and the mechanism that locks it to the tailgate (figured I would damage it eventually). It clamps to the rail, so that probably won't work for you.

I forget exactly how much the P-E cover cost me, I think somewhere around $700 installed, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

    Good luck

Bug defector (sic): The Lund Interceptor I purchased was so deformed it popped the fasteners right out of the holes. So I had two problems with mine. Dealer wants 95 dollars for a factory deflector. Anybody have one...if so, what do you think of it?

Nerf bars: I have never seen anyone else mention them, but I got Steel Horse stainless steel bars. I put them on myself in less than an hour and they have now gone through an entire winter without any problems.

My neighbor just picked up a brand new 2000 Sierra ext cab. I haven't had the heart to tell him about the door rattles during cold weather or the steering shaft problem. I don't even know if the dealer fixed the brake line problem that's under recall. I'll give him a few months!

That's a great deal. What kind are they? Sam's Brand...Something like an old Coke can with paper towel stuffed inside?

    Another boring day...

Buddy o' mine has the Pace Edwards Roll Top also. He loves it. I'm going to get one soon. Best price I've found is in the Cabela's catalog. About $612 delivered to your door, if you can install yourself.

They are AC DELCO PF59 the ones you are supposed to use for your truck

Not cheap imitations but the real thing

They are currently for sale at $5 each (from me) or ill trade anyone a set of aluminum wheels for um 3 filters and something to be named later

    Ryan
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
    i pay 5 bucks for a filter i can get for 2.99?
try the local tire shops for some rims that somebody has traded in for custom wheels. you sometimes find a good deal that way.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    $2.99 good lord thats expensive.

all the local places want like $4-500

"I have 11yrs experience with 1/2ton trucks and lighter 5th wheel and am very satisfied with my present setup. Good luck, Larry"

    Larry,
That is about the best piece of advice I've seen on towing in a long time. I choose not to drive a 3/4 ton around town. Just because, I tow a trailer in the mountians on the weekends.

Brakes have never been a big concern, thinking about it, I realizied I have breaking on 8 wheels! What concerns me more, is the non-floating rear axle on twisty curvy mountian roads.

Just thought I'd say your a man after my own heart. To all you flatlanders out there. Never stop at the summit and turn your engine off. It's in the owners manual.

Anybody know the density altitude at 7000' on a 90 degree day?

  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
what exactly is a Z85 large airbox?
  • barneyfbarneyf Member Posts: 3
    Z85 - heavy duty suspension
    Large airbox - Z71 airbox

In other words, a Z71 without skid plates, equal lighter truck for towing up hills.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
thanks, i've heard of the high capacity air filter, but i wasn't aware that there was a larger air box available as well. sounds like you enjoy your truck though.
  • dinosierradinosierra Member Posts: 14
Had a Pace Edwards in my 93 GMC. My boss now owns it, still working .
Will be putting down a deposit on the Pace edwards pwr. roll top on Sat. Think its $1380 installed. Opens with a remote. (2001 2500hd/8.1)
Had a Speciality power cover on my 99. Got a good price on it(friend in KY. Was a dealer.) But their not making them at this time. Brought out by another Co.
You can check out Pace Edwards on the net. Some good info.
  • barneyfbarneyf Member Posts: 3
It is the high capacity air filter. Sorry about that. $50 option. I have the heavy duty towing package and the locker as well.

Yes, your right, I do really like my truck.

Since I mentioned the "Locker" People often forget the "CON" of having a locker. When driving on snow/ice covered roads. If you lose traction on one wheel you lose it on both. Unless one is on dry pavement, which is sledom the case in a snow storm. Next time someone gets in your face for not having a locker on a 4X4, you may want to bring it up.

My truck was bought for three purposes, in town transportation, towing our travel trailer and driving to ski hills. Please notice 4X4'ing is not listed. That's why skid plates and big tires where of very low importance to me. Skinny is the only way to go in heavy snow.

After 475 miles of babying it, I jumped on it merging onto a freeway today. What a surprise. Yes, I like my new truck very much. Time for a oil change. After another 500 or so miles I'll hook up the trailer.
  • hillhoundhillhound Member Posts: 537
How much, if any, difference in mileage did you see when you replaced your 265s with the 285s? Been meaning to ask you that. Oh, by the way; if you think having a girlfriend is expensive, wait until you get married! That Blue Silverado may be the last new truck you'll be able to afford so take good care of it! (just kidding)!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
The Pace Edwards is easy to install, it's the fine tuning that can be a bear. Especially if you have stainless steel rail caps.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Heres my milage two months prior to changing to 285's

may want to double check your reprogramming of the truck for the tires.

Does anyone know anything about the GM Hard Folding Tonneau cover? At $677, it is a little expensive, but I like that fact it folds up and looks easy to remove and store.

Especially worried about leakage and security.

    thanks, Scott
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    why dean?

also i checked it yesterday using mile markers on the highway its right on.

it varies so much because the 11 and 12 mpg was basically all city driving. the 13+ was mixed

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    Use any of that stuff?
  • hillhoundhillhound Member Posts: 537
Thanks for the numbers. Considering you were running 4wd most of the time with the 265s it looks like there's not much difference.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Thanks for the install advice for the rolltop. No bed rail covers for me. Will float the Cabela's price in front of the local accessories deler and see if he can make it worth my while.

I think I have the noisy nerfs beat now too. Looks like some frame/bracket clearance issues (rookie mistake). Going to throw it on the rack Monday and adjust everything, along with greasing the bushings.

yep oxiginated gas for about 3-4 months

    gotta love that stuff

Hill basically there wasnt a change in mpg from the 265's - 285's. Very minimal if any. Id take .2 less mpg thats nothing these tires were worth it.
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Interesting fuel mileage numbers. The worst I've gotten has been about 15 mpg (autotrac mostly on/snow/oxy fuel) in the middle of this last, Colorado winter. The best was right at 20 running back and forth between Denver and Colorado Springs at a steady 70 mph on the 2-lane late last summer shortly after I bought the truck. Last tank was about 18.5-19 after we went back to summer fuel and the weather warmed up. 2000/1500/5.3L/Z-71/3.73/ ext cab, looks a lot like yours except for my tonneau cover. HP-III using premium fuel and the speedo/odo are programmed dead on. I don't spend a whole lot of time in heavy, slow traffic and usually run empty, but then I'm not a total light foot either. Are you really heavy on the throttle, haul a lot of rocks or text books, or spend all your time driving in the sand (saw the beach pics)? Am I missing something here or did GM just accidently do something nice for me after all these years?
    -- Don
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Lead foot. Lots of stop and go traffic driving. No real get out on the open road and cruise for 100 miles at 70 mph. My best milage has been 17mpg. coming home from indy last may. Cruised at 70mph all the way home.

    Maybe its your tonneau cover.

Probably has something to also do with all the darn books i carry in my truck and i havent been the last 2 wks.

    nascar on fx?

They are introducing each team (pit crew, driver)

Well they are driving each driver out in silverados. they are pretty neat all decked out in graphics (chevy and sponsers)
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
I think it's the books. When I was a poor, starving EE undergrad back in (hate to admit it) '70/'72, my '69 428 Mustang Mach I only got 9.5 mpg and I'm convinced it was the trunk full of books. I'm driving my truck from Denver to Frankfort, KY next month to pick up a dog. Going to program it back to reg unleaded for the trip. Should be interesting to see what the long haul mileage is. Going to Indy again this year?

oh oh no i didnt go to the race. I went for a wedding (the weekend my truck got damaged). I could have gone to indy this yr :(

But my parents are making me go to kansas this weekend GRRR they dont trust me. Im pretty mad cause my truck is gonna be sitting for 4 days.

Ill probably go to the brickyard this yr.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
For them not to trust you? hehe

    minikin

During the days of your Mach I, can't remember so well so long ago...no it was in '71 when the Boss 429 came out? Anyway I remember ethel was $.32 a gallon and filling a 20 gallon tank was less than $7.00. Then again, that was also my hourly pay......
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i dont know but they know im mad leaving my truck. My moms excuse is no where to put luggage. i told her to buy me a tonneau cover. Didnt work

GRRR i really need to stay home i could get my truck waxed and have some time to relax.

    Ryan
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Ethel was $20/hr as I recall; premium gas was 26.9 cents/gal. The Boss 302 and 429 both hit the streets in '69 with the new body style; same time as the MACH I. The Boss 429 series that year was a thinly disguised homologation of a TransAm car and hard to get. The more mundane/common big block street versions came in 390 and 428 trim; the 428 with the shaker hood being the "nastiest". Sure was a lot of fun, but it ate rear tires like you wouldn't believe. Still think the lousy gas mileage had something to do with all those damn books I had to carry around in the trunk.

Whoever wrote the messages to check to be sure you can lower the spare tire - THANKS!
I tried to do it this afternoon, and had a devil of a time but finally got the crank shaft to engage to lower the spare. Cleaned everything up and reinstalled the spare and lowered it again just to be sure. Worked OK the second time.

    Thanks again.

Tell them you'll meet them there with your truck. If they ask why, well you don't feel safe in a blazer cause it's soooo tiny....that should go over real well with Mom.

    minikin

The rear and front tires of those years were Firestone polyglas with raised white letters if I'm not mistaken. That's what I remember on my friend's '70 Mach I along with the 351 cleveland.
