However, their TSB's are slightly dated. Any new TSB would have to be requested as they can get them just takes them awhile to update their site. I mean with the thousands of TSB's for various vehicle constantly being issued, I think they do a pretty good job. Course the GM network is better but for us average citizens this may be the only alternative.

Dean, paperwork is done, as I already have one patent to my name, so I changed the words to fit. drawings done, and hopefully the USPS won't loose it with the registered mail stamp. Cost $500 to register so hope I can cover it with production, or sell the mold.

The funny thing about this whole thing is that I am told that the Dodge Ram Xcabs have such a container, but it is not as large. Figures...that's why I referred to it as "another one of the parts that GM forgot" hehe

I have a dumb question. Can I go to dealer with this information & get it cleaned or a new rim? or do I need to call GM on this? This is all new to me.

    Thanks,

    Tom
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I think we need to see what's on the tsb first. If there is a defect in the material used for the rim, should be no problem having it fixed or replaced. Looking at the title of the tsb, one would tend to believe there is a problem.

bad news apparently GM will not warranty this item.

    Bulletin No.: 00-03-10-002

    Date: March 2000

    INFORMATION

    Subject:
    Chemical Staining of Chrome Wheels

    Models:
2001 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks

This bulletin is being issued to update the model year information and communicate the importance of proper wheel rinsing when using recommended wheel cleaners. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 83-35-08 (Section 03-Suspension).

Chrome wheels have been returned to the Warranty Parts Center with permanent chemical staining. Most acid based cleaners will permanently stain chrome wheels. Follow-up with dealers has confirmed that such cleaners were used on wheels that were returned to the Warranty Parts Center.

Do not use cleaning solutions that contain hydrofluoric, oxalic and most other acids on chrome wheels (or any wheels). In most cases, mild soap and water will clean wheels. If a cleaner must be used on chrome wheels, GM Goodwrench Wheel Cleaner (P/N 1052929) or equivalent, is recommended.

IMPORTANT : This wheel cleaner (P/N 1052929) has a mild phosphoric acid which will not stain the chrome. However, do not use this on clear-coated aluminum wheels.

Whenever a wheel cleaner is used, it must be THOROUGHLY rinsed off of the wheel with clean clear water. Special care must be taken to rinse under the hub cap, balance weights and wheel nuts. Damaged wheels have been received back from the field with stains originating from these areas. Stained wheels are not warrantable. Any stained wheels received by the Warranty Parts Center will be charged back to the dealership.

    Parts Information

    Part Number Description
    1052929 GM Goodwrench Wheel Cleaner

I normally don't do this, but I believe in giving credit where credit is deserved (and that doesn't happen too often)....

Firestone got my new Bridgestone Duellers in this week, so I had them installed Sunday. Replaced the orignal Wilderness AT's (265's) with the 285 75 R16 Bridgestone Dueller AT. The manager charged me $147 for all four installed after pro-rating my Wilderness with 6500 miles. The spare was going to be an additional $12 (labor only), but he says he couldn't get it down...guess I have to go talk to GM.

So here's the credit...Anyone living in the Dallas area that wishes to do business with Firestone, I highly recommend talking to the tire manager, Manny, at the Irving Mall Firestone. The man did I lot of excellent work and has earned my respect. He even static balanced the rims without me asking (I know of some shops that want to charge more for this because it is more difficult...)

BTW, the tires look and ride great!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Why dont you try lowering your spare.

You have to use the tools under the back seat. Did he even unlock the lock and pull that out? Took me about 10 min total to get tools lower and pull tire off.

Try and see if you can get it off then when you do throw it in the back and take it to him

How do you like the 285's?
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
I didn't have time to try to lower it myself. We went out and he showed me what he was doing...used my tire tool, with the lock removed, said that it just spins in both directions - tire didn't come down.

The 285's look great, much more aggressive. I'll take a picture at lunch and post. They are a little louder, and for comparison, they weigh about twice as much as the Wilderness (but they are a "D" rated tire).

Manny said that he was concerned that they weren't going to fit, and took it for a test drive to check for rubbing...no problems though. They do look tight in the front (about 1.5" clear between the tire and the front air dam)

I am looking for info on two things that have been posted previously, but have gotten lost in all of the pertinent discussions regarding pi, e, and enthalpy...

    1. I have seen a lot of guys post regarding front end "sag". Does anyone have the specs for where the front should be in relation to the back (and to what points do you measure)?

    2. About a week ago, I developed a power steering squeal on left turns (even if just turning the wheel in park). What do I need to know about this to speak intelligently to the dealer?

    Thanks in advance.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    2. have you had your steering shaft replaced? If not my guess is it needs to be replaced.

I agrre PUN my BFGs are noisier than the fstones. All the more reason to turn up the radio.

    Ryan
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
I had it replaced on my 99, but that was for a rattle/vibration. This seams different - it will squeal for as long as I keep a leftward pressure on it.

Maybe someone can give me some information. Can one buy a 1500 Z71 with a 5-speed transmission? There are about 20 Z71's on the local dealer's lot and they all are equipped with automatics. I emailed Chevrolet and couldn't get a response. I know I saw in the brochure that you could get a half-ton Z71 with a 5-speed. Would appreciate some input in this area.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
"I emailed Chevrolet and couldn't get a response." What the heck did you expect?! LOL.

I don't think you can get a Z71 in a 5-speed for4 1500. Pretty sure the Z71 kicks you up to the 5.3L, which means auto trans. Don't have my brochure handy, though.

oby...thanks for the info on post #2650. You are indeed a great help here!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    you can get a 4.8 in a Z71. Not all Z71's have 5.3's

how did you try contacting gm? Everytime i have emailed them (3 times) i have gotten a reply within 2 days
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
You got a response? Every time I emailed them, I got some answer like "we'll get back to you in less than 48 hours" or "your local dealer will have more information". All I asked was whether or not the sliding rear window was still available. Geez.

But I did get five nice sets of brochures. Anybody want one?

I am looking for a chest typle tool box to fit in my 2500HD SB. I am not interested in the diamond plate metal ones. Would rather have one of the plastic with a split lid. I had one of these in my '92 EC and liked it because it sat flush with the bed rails. Held a lot of stuff when needed and was easy to take in and out when not needed Seems like it was a 'DuraTrunk' or something like that. Haven't seen many lately. Anybody have any ideas or recomendations?
  • jimk18jimk18 Member Posts: 1
Does anyone have experience with towing a 5th wheel at or above 7500 ft elevation with a 1500 5.3 ltr automatic, trailer gvwr is 5200 lbs. I know the specs say it's ok, but I am on the cusp between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    go bigger

you will have the power even if you dont need it. never know when you will

    Ryan
  • wight1wight1 Member Posts: 218
go with the 3/4 ton. At that elevation, you will have lost about 20% of your horsepower and the slightly higher torque of the 6.0 liter will help you. My last travel trailer was about 5300# and I know I'm glad I bought the 3/4 ton. And don't forget you need to think not just about pulling power, but stopping power. The 3/4 ton will serve you a lot better at towing and stopping in mountainous terrain. I just got back from West Texas with my new 6700# trailer, up to 3500 feet elevation, and I wouldn't think of going where you are with a 1/2 ton. If you're dead set on a 1/2 ton, at least get 4.10 gears.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
The front end height adjustment is referred to as Z-height in the service manual. It is the distance between two points on the front suspension. The best way to measure it is to measure the distance from each point to the ground and subtract the two. Do you have 4wd? If you have coil springs I have no idea how to adjust the height. If you have torsion bars, it's easy. If you want the spec, e-mail me and I'll scan the manual page.

For your steering noise, check the fluid level if you haven't already. I read that air gets introduced when the wheel is held at lock for more than a few seconds. The air is supposed to vent out somehow, maybe it's not??? Could be a bad pump too. I assume it's warranty, let the dealer figure it out.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I agree with wight1, go for the 2500. Besides more power, it has a stronger transmission (last longer for towing), more stable suspension, and better brakes. In fact, the 1500 front brakes are the 2500 rear brakes, and it's fronts are bigger. The 2500 parking brake is more stout too; it uses 2 shoes like normal drum brakes vs. a single expanding ring for the 1500. The 2500 comes with an engine oil cooler, not sure about 1500.

You will loose about 4mpg empty with the 2500 though. In either case, go with the 4.10 rear end.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    a 1500HD.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I think the new 1500HD now is actually the previous year's 2500.

Anyway...the 1500 4.8L 5 spd or 5.3L auto have plenty of power for accelerating the trailer and handling hills. Where it gets weary is when you're set in for the long haul, on the flats, battling wind gusts and rough roads, bouncing you, less stable, but still do-able.

hey is anyone using the ac delco gold or whatever the top filter is they make? If so where did you find it?

Just curious i am changing the oil saturday night after work. (im almost to 3K and no light yet like last time)

    Thanks

    Ryan
  • wight1wight1 Member Posts: 218
I've been using the AC Ultragold on my 6.0 liter for some time now. It seems to be a pretty good filter. I get mine at AutoZone stores for about $8 to $9.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I also use the Delco Gold filter. I figure if I'm going to use synthetic oil and leave it in longer I may as well use a premium filter too. I bought two cases of them on line at the 15% mark-up GM parts dealer so I don't have to hassle trying to find one every time. I first saw them at Pep Boys.

        http://www.gmotors.com/main.html

This filter is larger so if you use a socket type removal tool it won't fit.

  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
I have been using this filter since new. It is a full synthetic media which has excellent single pass (of dirt)efficiency and yet does not have the typical higher restriction of a cellulose media (paper)filter. In short it is a good filter. I used to get them at Pepboys at about $9. I went to one of my WD's that is an AC/Delco distributor, and my discounted price was $7.88. They are naturally expensive. but then isn't your truck?

    a K&N gen II fipk?

    Pros/cons?

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    1. FIPK is better than the airaid and yet it's cheaper

    2. Increase in intake will be negated unless increase flow in exhaust is also established.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
the kid looks for cheap stereo components, so what cheepo deepo exhaust do you recommend?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    no exhaust yet
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
are you unhappy with the trucks power?
does this have anything to do with the larger tires?
you know who is gonna have some fun with this one now.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
nope not at all. I have plenty. Cant have to much though

Just ran outta things to add to my truck and i have been reading about the fipk alot so i started researching it.
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
I can't remember if I've asked this before, but I'm going to do it again anyway...

When I got my 2001 rado, the brochure stated that LT's came with the automatic climate control. The dealer kindly pointed out the disclaimer on the brochure that said it was "subject to change".

Does anyone know if it is possible to switch out the standard hvac controls for the automatic controls? I would be interested to know how much additional wiring, etc might be necessary...

    Jim,
Now that you have plenty of inputs, I can really answer your question factually. I have the 1500 ext. cab SB with 5.3L and 3.73 axle. My 5th wheel is 5000lbs dry, 6500lbs max, 8ft wide and 27.5ft long with 9.5ft height(excluding the AC). Last fall I made my yearly trip to Cloudcroft, NM (9000ft) with this combo. The aerodynamics on this 5th wheel are good and with tow/haul I used OD at 65mph on the main highways. The 80 miles from Artesia, NM to Cloudcroft climbs from 4400ft to 9000ft. and was done mostly in 3rd, occasionally in OD. The last 1/2mi into the National Forest campground required 2nd. My truck is rated to tow 8200lbs, so I have 1700lbs margin minimum. Regarding brakes, difference between 1/2ton and 3/4ton are not that signfiicant since much of the stopping is provided by the electric brakes of the trailer. There are many 3/4ton owners on the road that are towing bigger trailers than mine and are just as close to their gross combined weight as I am. Make sure that the combination makes sense. I have 11yrs experience with 1/2ton trucks and lighter 5th wheel and am very satisfied with my present setup. Good luck, Larry

Well the rear shocks on my 97 Silverado have just about given all their life at 68k miles.
Question is, do I keep the Bilestiens (sp?) or go with aftermarket brands??
Got a quote from Autozone for Bilestiens at $49 for rear, $39 front..special order 1 day.
Dealer wants $160 each...hmm guess who I'd go with??
Anyway just wanted to get opinions I know a lot of peoples trucks are much newer than mine and probably don't need shocks yet, but hoping to get some feedback.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Congratulations!!!!
You'll enjoy your new truck a lot.

    I installed on my 2001 a....

Lung Interceptor Bug guard. Fits great, but the installation hardware they sent with it is a little cheap and didn't fit the existing square hood holes very well.

Westin Chrome Plated Stainless step bars. Lifetime warranty. Had the tire store I bought them from install them. Very nice.

I'm planning on having Line-x OTR sprayed in in a few days.

Then plan on getting an Advantage (Adrian Steel) single lid crossover tool box for the back. 3 year warranty and it's made of nice thick Aluminum.

Installed Lloyd's Ulitmats carpeted mats in the front and rear. Fit nice, don't move around and easy to take out and clean.

    Enjoy you new ride!!

    Pretty good timing eh?

Its a snap now took an hr but i let it completely drain (darined pretty darn fast) and i played some bball with my gf in between. She didnt even complain i was changing it.

I am even getting better mpg for some odd reason. Today i got 14mpg and the tank before that i got almost 16

I'll second on the Westin CPS. Put them on my 2500HD Crew Cab and so far so good. Kids can even climb in now with their skates on which I'm not sure is a good thing.
