I put probable 600 plus hours a year in a diesel powered tractor and combine. Burn thousands and thousands of gallons of fuel. Doesn't bother me a bit. No the allison is not louder than the Duramax, so in the diesel you hear the sound of the engine, which is fine with me. With the 8100, the transmission is way louder than the engine or the exaust (can you say borla baby ;) ), which gets rather annoying to me, I just don't think I like to listen to transmission wine all the time. Along with the far superior milage of the diesel, and the cheaper fuel, this is making me take a long and hard look at the Duramax. If gas were 90 cents and the 8100's gas tank was big enough, that would be what I would get. The final reason is that I hate to fuel the stinking truck so much, I get 14 with the 5.3 on a 26 gallon tank, if I got 11-12 that would be that many less miles per fillup, which is already way to often.

I once heard thermodynamics referred to as "thermoGodd*mnics".

As for the "manly sound of a diesel" - one fine spring morning about eight years ago, somebody in the office building next to the one I was working in came to work driving his brand new Dodge Cummins diesel. I and all my co-workers heard him a block off, and were expecting a Peterbilt hauling something like a flatbed full of pig iron to go rumbling by. This thing was so loud, the windows were literally shaking.

Yes, we do, in case our mechanical pencils leak.

My door rattle is back. Hmmm.
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
Mine never left!!!! Its the damn plastic inserts. You can stuff a towel in them and it will stop. I have yet to figure out how to wedge a towel in the dash/cdplayer area. Maybe you engineers can figure out another technique since GM can't/wont!

Tell me more about the inserts. I thought maybe it was the black little plastic thingy at the bottom of the ex cab rear door, but haven't isolated it yet. Gimme all ya know! I hates rattles. I'm gonna find it, and I'm gonna kill it.

quit talking about the back door rattle! I don't have one yet and I'm afraid my truck might hear you.

My right rear door has started to exhibit a rattle along with the back seat, the passenger door panel, the ashtray, and the middle console.

Well, guess I know what I'm doing this afternoon.

I cured my dash rattle with some foam

I don't care for the diesel in a vehicle, but they are the only way to go in tractors, earth movers, etc. I don't like the diesel noise, but actually kind of like the smell in the fields. As to the Allison whine, the only time I notice it is when I am going up to about 20 mph with the window open. At speeds above that I don't hear it - maybe it is bad ears from a few previous lives.
On the gas mileage, I guess it depends on what you are used to. I have never owned a vehicle that got 20 miles per gallon. The closest I have to that is my 56 Ford with a specially built 440 Dodge Magnum, A727 Torqueflite, and a Plymouth 2.92 rear end. At 70 I got about 17 mph. On my 70 El Camino, it is 10 mpg at 10mph or a 100 mph. My 88 Ford F250 runs about 7.3 to a little over 8, so I think that 8.1/Allison that gets about 9.5 to 12.88 is great.

diesels -- fuel prices here have stayed steady at about $1.45 or so while reg gas has gone from $1.38 to $1.69 and premium has climbed to $1.90+. Have a 1/2 ton gas truck, tho; don't need, & can't justify the 2500HD diesel.

"see how many things you can hang off your belt" look. Pager, cell phone, palm pilot, calculator - latest discussion concerns the best way to fasten a palm pilot to your belt - I don't know how these guys sit down without rupturing their guts. I will be the last living American without a cell phone or palm pilot (I am forced to wear a pager, but otherwise I like the "stripper" look.:):)

Hanging off my belt: Skytel Motorola Pagewriter 2-way email pager, Qualcomm dual band cdma cell phone with digital messaging and paging, Garmin GPS E-trex Vista with Mapsource street guide. I was even thinking I could carry some batteries if I had a pouch.

Sorry, I don't do pocket protectors. My glasses do have the tape holding them together sometimes, but lately I've preferred squinting.
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
Well, it is definitely not the best looking but it worked for me. My rattles were in the doors so all I did was take some cloth shop towels and wedge them into the opening at the bottom. It help stop the rattles caused by the speakers. Now about the rear door area, I haven't notice any similar rattles but I recall over two years ago the dealership had to retork the bolts on the latch. It was loose enough the rear door was moving while driving causing a rattle. Have you had your quarter glass replaced? There was a TSB on this as well. Done that one too! Lets see, not sure if this will help you.

Ryan, what type of foam and where exactly did you install it? I have had the cd player adjusted 6 or more times. Also had the passenger air bag switch adjusted due to it being loose.

BTW, I have done away with my pocket protector, calculator and glasses. I got a cell phone and a set of contacts. I'm in disguise, LOL :-)

no pager, cell phone or palm pilot for me. I do have a laptop though about as hightech as i get

    DANO

My rattle was above like the gas gauge area. It was inside of the dash when i pushed down on top of the gas gauge (above) it would squeek. Popped dash apart and stuck the foam between the instrument cluster and dash.

I would take pics but last time i tried the rattle came back so i am not taking my dash apart again.

Oh yea what type of foam. I dont know its about an inch thick. I used some that had a sticky back and some that didnt. Dad got it for me from work so its some industrial stuff

    Im sure 3m makes some.

Its good to see that I was a fashion leader back in the early 70's when I use to wear a slide rule on my belt in a leather holster! EE's rule!
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Less than a week after getting my second rear slider replaced due to frame cracks, I need a new windshield because it's cracked! Saturday I played in a 4wd park, light duty stuff, and Sunday the windshield developed a 1 foot crack while sitting in my driveway. It was fine until I started washing it, I look up and there it is. I'm guessing the cab flexed and put some stress on the window??? It seems like too much of a coincidence that it happened a day after that type of driving but I've had it off-road before with no problem. I hope this isn't a chronic problem. 2000 2500 reg cab.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
It made me think of something. I noticed Dodge has gone back to seat belts on the B-pillar in the new Ram. Does anyone know why? Is there a safety issue with the seat mounted belts?
  • smith53smith53 Member Posts: 72
is there a tsb or fix for the squeal from steering when turning the wheel to the left. after a year of listening to this i am tiring of the noise. i seem to remember someone saying there was a fix but can't recall if it was a tsb or what. does anyone know tsb# or part#s to rid me of this noise. dealer says there is no fix but i do not think this is so.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
....don'y ya get sick of hearing that from dealers these days?

The suckers just look into the puter....if no service bulletin is out......"it can't be fixed!"

...what ever happened to good old fashioned....uhhh...geeeezz..I don't know....perhaps having some know how of cars and maybe checking them out?....you know...like as if they were perhaps a mechanic?

perhaps they are too stupid?....look in the phone directory in their puter (to make you think they are doing something)...and tell us "there is no fix"

Anyones bowtie on the front have any nicks or anything?

Noticed yesterday i have a long crack in mine. Looks like it took a rock or something.
  • gotribe1gotribe1 Member Posts: 81
Parking using the braille system? You are supposed to stop before hitting the object in front of your truck. Did you get your Silverado anything for its anniversary?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I think there's a TSB out for a metering valve replacement in the the power steering pump.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
doubt that your windshield cracked on it's own or due to cab flex. almost 99% of cracks that suddenly expose themselves are due to a nick or chip that finally lets go on the outer laminate. but then again, if you do find out that it was from cab flex, it gives us all a way to get to GM, but so far they are pretty good with their "no fix" line and will probably get away with it. still though, sorry to hear that this happened to you. i had a new truck that got a wammy in the first month once and know how you feel. it's sorta like a cake in the face. not cheap either.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I have a grill guard so i didnt run into anything. It would hit that before it hit the bowtie.

Anniversary hmmm well i have new tail light guards on order.

Just in case yaw'l thought I'd dropped off the face to the earth...between traveling for work and the rest of the honey do list...I decided to build a storage bin for under the back seat of my truck. Well I'm not the first, as I remember a while back someone (I appologize for forgetting who did this first), built on out of metal. As I live in and area that is known for boats building(America's Cup Racing Yatchs), there are a lot of fiberglass workers and availability of materials here. So I decided to build a mold and make one out of 'glass, since I have some experiencing raising the transom on my boat to fit a Mercury with a 25" leg. The folowing pics should give you some idea that this may not be as easy as it looks and right now I am about as high from the resin fumes...aahhhhhhhh...acetone yeah!
    image

This is the mold all waxed and ready for the cloth and resin

    image

Just popped the first bin off the mold. Many layers of mat and interwoven hi-tec cloth. Oh yeah 2 gallons of "boat in a can"

    image

Wow it fits like it should...well the mold did so why wouldn't the bin made from it? Well cause I made it..heh heh

    image

There is a rib on the floor that I had to make a recess for and it holds the bin in place when the seat is down. Keeps it from sliding forward.

The use of fiberglass over metal allows me to make a bunch of compound curves and maximize the space under the seat for tow rope and strap, cleaning supplies, and all the other stuff that would otherwise be sliding forward when ya have to jamb on the brakes when some little rice burner cuts in front of you. heh heh. Oh well fixed that.

Anyway this is what I been doing and, Oby, I will get to the back up sensor soon, I promise!

Man I itch alllll over. Second cold shower today...oofffff. Thanks for the complement. I have 2 possible orders for more and as the mold worked good and didn't bust up when I popped it off, I guess I could make more. e-mail me as we ain't supposed to sell stuff through here.

    Mike,
I can get it gel coated, but I think that I may use Interlux epoxy paint and do the outside in dark grey with carpet inside to keep stuff from making that fiberglass donk when it hits it.

Just finished watching Richmond, great race...Tony Stewart won, Rusty and Gordon got into it at the end...and everybody interviewed said Dale was the best teacher.

I have taken the suggestion of many posts and purchased all the Zaino products to give my 2000 Dark Carmine Red rado a show room look. The only problem is I have been washing my truck with well water and it has water spots BAD! I tried the clay bar with no success. I was looking for a cleaner when I came a cross a can of of Bon Ami. I took a real wet sponge and a sprinkle of Bon Ami and the spots on a small area are gone. I am afraid to do the whole rig due to the fact that it looks good but what am I doing to the clear coat?? Any info on dealing with this situation?
  • bamatundrabamatundra Member Posts: 1,583
Actually, bon ami is a very mild abrasive. Do not use any others such as Comet. They will totally remove your paint. I have used it on my BMW windshield to remove the film I get from driving on the highway. It works great!
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
on a windshield? might as well sandblast it.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
beware of any advice from bama. he's a well known chevy hater.

-on a more serious note though, one product that i've had great success with is Blue Coral's clear coat polish. it comes in a tube and will remove water spots without leaving a bunch of swirls. i used it on the glass, again without harming the glass. hope this helps ya.

I've been driving an 01 extended cab Silverado this weekend in my descision making between a Ford XLT or the Chevy LS. In the owners manual they mention the fold down armrest containing a pull out writing table that can hold a pen and pad of paper. I've searched all over for this and haven't found it yet. Does anyone know if this exists and if so where will I find it?

BTW, so far the Chevy is winning, on performance (small V8) and looks (hate those huge looking doors on Ford - too much of a slab), but Ford beats out Chevy on the crash tests, not that I'm planning on doing that, but you never know.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Not sure what happened to my post earlier. Maybe I pressed the read subscriptions button rather than post? But nonetheless...good work. Glad to see you've been keeping yourself productively busy...unlike the people that post in the BAC topic.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
    what's the "BAC" topic?
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
No, you're not missing anything. I have a 2000 LS with no writing desk. I don't think anyone has ever gotten one. There was a discussion here about a year ago and I think and no one had seen it. Several people came up with their own solutions.
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
Very nice job on the bins. I had asked about something like that right after I got my truck but never did find anything. Now if you could just modify it for one side so the guys with Bazooka tubes could use it too...
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
All you need is a sawzall to fix that right quick...lol

    pretty goofy.
the t vs. big3 is about as useless as they come, kinda boring arguing with a couple teenagers like Rwell and bamarama.
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
Now THAT was a waste of electrons...haha

I am afraid that mounting the Tube inside the bin might set up harmonic frequencies that might be unlivable, but then Quadrunner is the undisputed specialist in that field after Obyone. Yeah I could put a 10" piece of PVC in one side of the bin, but it would require exact measurements and lots of extra time...like Dean said...sawzall!!

    BTW thanks Dean

that GM plastic getting you down. Man, first the tailgate, now the bowtie. Get a billet bowtie.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
My truck has this, it's an early 2000 LS model with a cloth 40/20/40 seat. I know they stopped putting it in sometime in 2000 because a friend's truck just has a recessed "tray" in it's place. Actually it is a holdover from the previous style GM trucks.

It's not a pull out table. It is a flip-forward plastic tablet holder that is recessed in the top of the fold-down center armrest/storage compartment. It's useful if you need to write things down often. It is a source of squeaks which may be why they got rid of it. Either that or cost.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Are you saying the dealer won't cover the windshield under warranty? There is absolutely no evidence of rock damage. The crack starts at the bottom edge of the window, under the molding, and works its way up. I know for a fact it happened in my driveway. Probably was brought on by shooting cold water on a hot window.

I'll call a service advisor tomorrow and ask. So far I've only talked with a scheduler.
