    Come out of school tonight
I have a 2 ft long scratch above the silverado on my tailgate.

I dont even believe this. its real deep. Gonna try and buff it out dont think itll work.

    I wanna break someones fingers

I am parking in the boonies now.

So someone intentionally keyed your truck. That [non-permissible content removed] should be hung by his toes, an hour for every inch that scratch is long. There is absolutely no point in someone destructing anothers property. He probable doesn't even know whos truck it is, but was jealous, and wanted to make his mark because he thinks its funny. I got a 6" around dent in my rear bumper on the 2000 that is pretty noticeable, and not fixable. Would have to replace the bumper. I didn't turn it into insurance, nor do I plan on getting it fixed. I was sick when I say it. Somebody hit it in the parking lot down at school. (Parked 9AM monday-3PM every Friday). These bumpers stink anymore, not strong at all.

Good luck RYAN, I hope you have a good weekend ;)

doesnt look like it was on purpose.

I think they would have done somthing worse. My only thought is someones bookbag zipper brushed up against it. I dont know its a very fine (but into the clearcoat). Its about 16 inches long. I tried to wax it out tonight but it didnt work.

Im gonna go to the bodyshop and see how much itll cost. Hopefully they can fix it without painint the whole tailgate.

Im not to mad (i am pissed but not like the last one) At least i can drop off the tailgate and have em fix it and still drive the truck. Guess i can do a test on mpg with the tailgate off now.

I wish i could have taken pics but it was to dark.

Anyone know if that stuff "as seen on tv" for scratches works? Anything at like walmart target any of that stuff actually work? I forget the product GS7 or something?

Also took my tail light guards off tonight. I wanted to clean em up. Dont know if i am putting them back on yet.

Brought some stuff for my dark blue el camino,
it was blue tinted polish. It worked for a while
but reappeared and if used reg wax it just made
a white line. Would just go by the body shop
and get done right. Have also seen some
product thats suppose to cover deep marks bet
its false advertising, if goes to metal like
ad nothing but a repaint is going to work.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The "as seen on tv" products dont work. Gf said her dad tried that on his car and it left a bad looking mark.

Hopefully itll be an easy fix (wet sand maybe?)

If to costly and not worth it i am taking a qtip and gonna put some blue into the scratch to at least cover some of it

Dad said someone probably keyed me. I dont know but if and when i find out who did it they are gonna pay. I will honestly break their fingers. Let em think about that one.

They are lucky im not to mad about it

    ..even an LT...8.1/Allison/4:10's to boot..

    only difference....he wanted a locker...

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    245's are very WIMPY

my moms blazer has 235's man.

    At least go with 265's
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
Go with 235x85R16. Them are a mans tire. And they fit on the stock rim. They are taller, and just as wide as the firestone 245, if you buy a good brand (Michelin, BFG, ect.) Im not really into the big tire deal. Of course the 74 dodge 3/4 ton lifted powerwagon has 33x12.5 16.5 on it. Ground Hawgs that is. Now that is a big truck, but SUCKS the GAS.

didn't you get a bottle of touchup paint from GM when purchasing your truck? Know where it went? And I would use a flared end of a toothpick to touchup rather than a Qtip.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I would hold off on the body shop and at least wait till you get a couple more scratches that is. That way it'll be worth the time. Maybe off roading a couple of weekends should do it.
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Have you talked with your insurance companies? I changed my deductible years ago. Went from $500 to $50 on comp. for a total of $8 per year. Comprehensive covers vandalism... For $8, I think it is definitely worthwhile. Just my $.02.
    Hindsight is great, isn't it?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i am taking it in this morning. It looks real bad dont know how good itll look with touchup paint.

I talked to bco last night and he suggested if i use touch up paint to clay bar the access off.

    Never used clay bar

    Will that work?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..Ryan hasn't been off roading yet!

....as for large tires...yeah 33's look good..even 38's on the right truck....but I'm not 17 years old any more and agree that 285's-305's look good....but 245's have been fine on my truck for 1.5 years.....why waste the money?

    - Tim

..Wimpy?.....let's chain that "wimpy" CC with the 8.1 and 245's to your "manly" 5.3 with 285's and see what wimpy is all about...?

    LOL
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Tim the 8.1 will have more power but ill have better traction. That could prove the difference.

I see your point about not wanting to spend the money. But if i got a 2500HD the first thing i would do would be to change the tires.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Well heres a pic of the scratch. It doesnt look like much. To sunny and the houses from across the street are on my tailgate.

If you look real real close it is at the same level as the top of the garage in the picture.

Its right above the SILV going through the middle of that tree, almost in line but just below the roofline of the garage.

    Thats it

Body shop wants almost $300 to repaint tailgate

Told me to talk to the new car sales guy. He referred me to a local guy that wet sands and buffs out. Gonna take it in at 10am tomorrow. Should only cost like $20-$25

It wont be totally gone but somewhat

    Newbie alert!

Ride. Tell me about ride. Mine's an '01 1500 Ex cab, 5.3L, Z71, 265 tires, locker. It runs great, but the ride is pretty stiff. Every bump on the road seems to be exaggerated, with a little bit of "bounce" until it settles. My theory is that it's a function of the stiffer shocks you get with Z71 (not meant to ride like a luxury car), and I expected some of that with what I bought. First off, is that normal?

I've seen posts about replacing the shocks to get a better ride, and with it, better control. Bilsteins I think were mentioned. Who has the scoop on these? What will they do to the feel of the truck? Cost? Benefit? Help?!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The man to talk about bilsteins is gone on a month long trip. (BCO)

I am considering switching (hoping the have a stiffer ride)

Bilstein makes whats called bilstein HD (heavy duty shock i guess.

Price is about $49-59 each. So about $250 for new shocks.

Ive heard good things but if you want a softer ride try the edelbrock IAS shocks those are probably what you are looking for. About the same price on sale up to about $79 each.

just need to add a few more such as tires, stereo, etc., all the little goody's that GM left for us to improve on, due to the cheapo crap that was supplied on our trucks.
good luck on this one now!

tell me it isn't so.....were we unsuspecting buyers?

Motor Trend had reviewed the new style 'rado and said that if you don't need 4wd, don't get the Z71 package as the ride is stiff. Then again, what's stiff for some is smooth for others. I think it has got to do with nerve endings....your opinion doc.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
I sold BCO his Bilsteins. Then I went out and bought another set for my 2500.

When I first bought my 1500, it had the Firm Ride suspension. Firm Ride was too mushy, even for my wife. And that was empty. When we loaded our camper on the truck it was scary. So we bought some Z71 take-off shocks. They were and improvement, but still too soft for us. We bought the Bilsteins and no longer complain about our shocks.

When we bought the 2500, I took all the add-ons off the 1500 (getting ready to sell it) and BCO was the lucky individual who got the shocks.

If you are condsidering Bilsteins, my advice would be to go for it!

they will help your handling dramatically (IMHO). For less bounce on the highway tarstrips and washboard roads, try BFG velvet ride shackles - they have a "torsilastic" or rubber bushing in the center of an articulating shackle. I have the Edlebrock/velvet combo and like it. My tires are factory Goodyears and I think they ride hard, so maybe I would notice a better ride with the Edelbrocks with better tires. Personally, I think tires are the most improtant ride component.
(PS - good to know that you are a real Michigander, not a wimpy Michiganian. Remember the controversy in the state legislature over that one? I liked the bumper sticker of a yellow goose on a blue background saying "I'm a michi- GANDER". LOL)

OK, I haven't posten in a LONG time. But since the last time I posted, I actually picked up a '01 Silverado 1500 ext. cab Z-71, back in late Nov.
I just got my tax return back and it's accessory time. So now is the time for me to ask those mundane, over-asked, common knowlege questions.

First -- Bug deflector. Last Weekend's trek across 120 miles of Indiana farmland made my windshield look like a paint ball target. So, which ones DON'T make the flaps on the windshield or the mirrors make noise? I saw Bab's pics, and I like the interceptor look. I went to the site, and they don't list any prices. I also saw the X-Terminator compact, anyone have any luck with that one? How much, and did you order it from the website, or pick it up elsewhere?

Tonneau Cover -- I'm looking at a soft black tonneau, who makes the best one? So far out of the pickup's I've seen, Extang makes the best looking one. Has anyone had any problems with it, or know of a company that makes a better one? Snaps/Snapless? Hot/Cold?

Bedmat -- I saw one listed for $86 somewhere, sounds pretty damned expensive for a cut piece of rubber. Anyone know of any good deals?

Babs, I like your Wade rail caps, where did you get them from? I coulnd't find Wade's website (if they even have one).

And finally, the truck is too quiet. I'm not really looking to shell out 5 or 600 bucks for a Borla catback, and I would really like to know what the systems sound like before I go ahead and buy one. Any ideas on that? Looking for either single in, dual out (sides) or dual in dual out. Does anyone have any .wav files posted with their 'rado exhaust note? How about prices for the flowmaster Delta 50 and 70 series? How do they sound?

    Thanks for the help,

    Leavy

    Hey Ryan, Tim and all!
I had posted a few tines back, what about a year or so and just been reading through the whole thing. Man, I should have kept up cause you guys are really into this board!!!!!
Oh well, hate to sum it up but sorry for the bad and congrats on the good.

Now thats all done I've gotta ask for some options. Hopefully I'll get a few that will actually help me decide.
My '99 Ext Silverado LT is coming up off lease in October. It is a 45K lease and I'll be over quite a bit, possibly 10K-15K. Many reasons why.
    The dilemma is, I need and want a truck and plan on buying a 30' travel trailer about 7000lbs. The current truck does not have the towing pkg or a locking differential. Should I;
    1. Return the truck and lease a 2001 or 2002,
    2. Purchase this truck, $20,000 and add the trailer pkg and locking diff,
    3. Buy some other CHEVROLET TRUCK?
I realize this is asking alot, but I have several months to plan this out.

BTW, some of the things I have posted about before have since disappeared. Like the engine tapping at startup and the vibrations when hauling. Only thing I have done besides change the oil is replace the tires. Tirerack.com + buddies shop = $250 in my pocket!!!!

I'll be hanging around so let me know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Dano

Where abouts in indiana were u?

Wade has a site. Ill look it up and post it probably tues for you. I am pretty busy at the moment.

I got the rail caps at the rhino linings place that did my spray in.

Is it considered OK to post a "for sale" ad on this list?
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
If you want a cheap rubber bed mat, I found one at WalMart for $40. It's by Rubber Queen and is rectangular, no form fit around the wheel wells. Simple, but it meets my needs just fine.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
You should go for the new truck. Buy a 2500HD to tow that trailer. If you do keep the old one, you don't need a locker to tow a trailer. For a boat I'd say it's a very good idea to help get up the launch ramp but not for normal on-road towing.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
I got a Bugflector II for my new rig. $39. Looks great and super easy to install. Don't really know for sure it's effectivemenss on bugs, but the ones I've collected have been most the big ones with enough body weight to blow through the slipstream. But it's a truck, ya know.

Thanks for all the info on shocks, folks. I think for the money I'm going to sit pat with the factory ones for now and see if I get used to it or not. But I'll be watching shocks discussions closely nevertheless. Had 1200 pounds of concrete in the back yesterday. Felt good to do truck things again. That would've been 2 trips for my old Toyota.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I agree..for that trailer...a 1500 will work...but you will have so much nicer of a trip with a 2500HD 6.0 or 8.1...or go all the way with Dmax?

Buying after a lease is usually not the way to go...either buy up front or lease and dump....but it's up to you.

hood. Maybe the old ones that were straight and went way up over the hood would have helped the windshield - but I don't think they even make those anymore. I have an EGR and it is OK.
Berlin hinged tonneau cover. You can lift the whole cover up with one motion, unsnap and roll it up to store at the bulkhead with the bows, has spring loaded rear bar to make it easy to unsnap in cold weather. Downside - like all soft covers you can't secure a load in the box, only opens about 30 degrees so you have to unsnap the sides to get at stuff in the front of the bed.
Bed liner - BedRug. It covers the space between the tailgate and the bed with a built in flap, doesn't rub off the paint on your box, can be removed from the velcro attachments easily, provides bed floor protection via underside foam pad, supposedly you can hose it out and it is chemical/stain resistant. Downside - might not be the best choice if you like to haul manure, dead animal carcasses, etc., no coverage for front bulkhead rail.
Bak - bed rail caps. Smooth so you can mount a tonneau tightly without interference from ridges/diamond pattern on rail, you can get them without stake pocket holes which is what you want if you have a soft tonneau, since the edges of the stake pockets will be visible under the mounting rails for the toneau if you have holes in the caps. Downside - I'm still waiting for the correct front bulkhead protector from Bak - like about 2 months.
I like quiet so I can't help you on the noismaker exhaust.
    Good luck.

    Vince4 and Tim,
A new truck is what I've been leaning towards. As far as a locker, its just a preference because of my driving habits. Goes back to my racing days. About that trailer deal, unfortunately it wont be used often. At least 4 time a year, maybe more when my son gets older.

Since a new truck may be the way to go, should I try turning it in earlier, now, or wait until October. It is gonna cost me ether way because of the mileage at the end.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
I got mine in record time. Went to the dealer after mine came in. The salesman and I did a walk around while it was in the detail shop's parking lot and then took it for a test drive. It was flawless when we left it. Got it back from the detailers and it had a one inch scratch on the driver's door. They gave me a choice of repainting the entire door or using touch-up paint with free mud flaps all around thrown in. I figured the next scratch was not too far down the road, so I took the mud flaps.

    Scratch update

Doesnt look that bad when the truck is dirty hardly noticable

    Ok now the saga

Had the appt saturday morning. Went guy was in meeting? This place was down right scary. bad part of town junk cars all over. Well after 30 min of waiting in my truck in the parking lot i left. Went to a local bodyshop. Talked to owners son. Said about half the scratch will come out with a good buff and other half will need to be wet sanded. I take it in tuesday after work. He also told me i can go to a local car wash place to have them buff it out if i was in a hurry for it to look nice (autobody place is gonna wetsand/buff for $25)

This carwash place said yea we can do it but itll cost $20.

F THAT! I was like are you crazy? Guy said well the whole truck is $85. I said your not even doing the whole tailgate. Got my keys back and drove off. Ill wait till tuesday.

    Man whats with people nowadays.

Oh yea the local bodyshop guy has a nice 2000 GMC so i know ill be taken care of

To all of you current Silverado owners.

I believe I should be ready within the next 30 days or so to purchase. I have a couple of questions

    1. If the dealers are unable to "locate" one for me. Is it too late to order one or am I SOL until the 2002 models come out?

    2. Fog lights from factory. Are they worth it or should I purchase aftermarket?

    3. Locking rear differential. Do any of your trucks have it and if so, is it worth getting?

    4. Lastly.. sorry guys. The Z71 package. For those of you that have it and dont't, does it REALLY make that much of a difference in ride quality? I mean do you feel EVERY bump in the road if you have it? The Silverado I had test driven awhile back HAD the Z71 package and I did not find it to be to bad a ride.

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Jim

P.S. Ryan that stinks about the deal with your scratch!
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Chevy included Bilsteins with the Z-71 package, but it appears the bean counters caught up with it and they went to seriously low-end Monroes. I bought Edelbrocks and couldn't be happier; slightly harsher in sharp jounce, but overall way much smoother and the high speed handling is seriously improved. Yeah, having to change shocks on a new truck shouldn't happen, but that's life and it's well worth it. Current going price seems to be $70/ea + shipping from a couple of 4X4 mail order houses.
Tonneaus -- I have an Extang Black Max that's weathered it's first high country winter really well. If you want a flip-up soft cover, Tekstyle seems to make the best -- good latching system and high quality vinyl. I'm thinking about changing.

    -- Don
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
-- Factory fog lights are a joke!
-- I wouldn't even think about buying a 4X4 without a rear limited slip or locker.
-- Z-71 has some good parts and is worth it -- change the shocks.
    -- Don
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
    1. Don't know for sure, but I think you should still be able to order an '01.

    2. I didn't get the fog lights but most pasters here seem unhappy with the factory units.

    3. I have a locker on my 2WD and I think it's worth a couple of hundred bucks. If it keeps or gets me out of trouble once it's well worth the price. Some guys would rather not have the extra complexity. There is also some debate on how useful it is for a 4WD.

    4. If you you test drove the Z71 and it works for you, go for it. In the long run your gonna drive it you're the one that's gotta like it.
  • jaguar0027jaguar0027 Member Posts: 387
Thanks for the info guys. I just wanna figure out what the deal is with possibly "ordering" a 2001 at this stage in the game.

I plan to hit another dealer within the next day or two.. will keep ya posted.
