Anyone have a current carparts.com coupon? Gonna buy new taillight guards for my truck and found em for $128.

    Thanks
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
OK, I gotta ask. Why do you need tail light guards? Do you back into a lot of things? ;-)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I have backed into 1 thing a mailbox (hit and run haha) well i checked it out and it was fine didnt hurt it.

Basically looks. They serve 0 purpose. Take a look at my pics i like em alot

    http://www.picturetrail.com/ryanbab

Also got the scratch wet sanded and buffed out $20. Of the 22 inch scratch he got rid of about 6 inches totally. The rest is basically faded. Looks good less noticable and not so darn shiny. I am happy they did a good job. 1 spot they couldnt get out. He said i can put some touchup paint but itll be a glob. Ill leave it alone. Its a war wound now.

They look good. But I have to ask, is that the stock exhaust I see there? If so, why not add either a cat back system or at least go with dual outlets at the rear. Only a suggestion. I really think that should be an option from the factory/dealer!!!!!!

    Stock exhaust

    I dont need anything louder

Just bought new tail light guards from carparts.com

    $108.20 including shipping

I got $30 off (new buyer code 260101)

These do no attach with velcro and seen to be a "cleaner" look the go rhinos are gonna fall apart due to the rust.

I am hopefully going to be getting my new tires in the next month or so and I have a few questions. I am going with the BFG's I just don't know what size. I have a '00 Z71 with 265 Firestones right now. I am considering putting on the 285's but I don't really want to deal with speedo recalibration or tweeking torion bars or anything other than putting on the new tires and driving it. Ryan, did you do the speedo recal. or did you have to tweek the torsion bars or anything? If I do not do the recalibration what are going to be the noticable effects (less pickup, less top end, etc.) I should mention that I have the 3.73 gears and that I also have limited slip if that matters.

    Thanks for any info.

are those taillight guards easily removed? Looks like it will add time in cleaning the truck.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
3:73's also....he didn't do any suspension tweaking....but did get a Hypertech unit to fix the speedo...

he says power is a minimal loss..and claims to not even notice it...

    Now wake up Ryan!

    - Tim

...and no orange yet.....at very earliest....early June when you can order a 2002....but we gotta figure out what to do with the Stang and when a Sport Trac comes first?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
RIC - Yea they remove easily. 2 screws and they are off. Not to hard to clean with them. Actually pretty easy. I had them on for about 10 months. Never took them off when i did there was very little dirt on the truck. They didnt leave any markings

TIM - they are getting pretty rusty (inside the grooves) and i dont like the velcro on the body.

Mark - no tweeking of the torsion bars i have plenty of room. I did recalibrate the speedo with a HPIII (which cost $300) I noticed the braking to take a little bit longer before i reprogrammed. Havent noticed any power loss. I must say of everything i have added to my truck the tires were my best move.

    Guys,

Your honest opinion. I am getting a new silverado probably within a month or so. Should I get a 2001 or... order a 2002 and wait a bit for it.

Let me know your pros/cons I want to see if you have the same thoughts I do.

    Regards,

    Jim

The 2002 isn't likely to be any different than the 2001..... (except the numbers at the lower right corner of the window sticker)

The earliest you might expect a 2002 is about October or so.....

You can get "incentives" on 2001's......

2002's will not have "incentives" until about next January.....

    Why wait?

    Hans
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
and start looking now! You'll probably see the dealers with high inventories start selling them to get them gone. It helps their allocations when newer models arrive around Sept./Oct.

That brings up another good point. I checked out the Hypertech webpage and I think I read that you MUST use super after you re-program? Is this correct? Now before you guys get on me for using regular let me explain... I've always used super until we bought my wifes 99 blazer. I used super in that for a few weeks and it started running like crap and the check engine light came on. I brought it back to the dealer and they checked it out and couldn't find anything wrong. He asked what gas I was using and I told him super. He said use regular, these engines are designed to use regular. I thought to myself B.S. thats just something to say when you can't find the problem. Well after switching to regular the blazer ran great, we had it for about 8 months when I bought the rado. So I used regular in the truck ever since and it runs fine.

    ..I'd wait for a 2002....

I ordered my 2K 2500 in June 99 and go it in Aug 99....1500's should be even easier...

now if a deal is what you want......start looking in lots on 2001's.....once summer is here...they will be dealing even more.....of course the stock will be less to choose from....

but it doesn't take until October to get a 2002....unless you want a Duramax perhaps?...

    Good Luck

You have some good points. I figure if I can get a good deal on a 2001 I will go for it. My only deal was they may not have all the options I would want and to boot, if they are on lots you never know what kind of people have been beating on them during a test drive.

I suppose a 2002 would be cool, just have to find out what is up with when I could order one, and when would I receive it. I will keep you guys posted.

    Thanks,

    Jim

As I posted a few days ago, production on 2002 Silverado's is scheduled to begin June 18th. The early production will likely be at the ordering dealers in July.

Do you want the best possible price on your new Silverado (rebates on 2001's) or do you have to have the latest improvements and additions (climate control on 2002 LT's, Protec box, Ride Control on Z71's, plus ???)? Do you have to have a difficult to find option or color, or are you willing to take "close enough" from the dealer's lot?

Also note that a 2001 purchased now will very quickly be a year old. This needs to be offset by the price you pay, to compensate for the lower value, unless you will be keeping the truck for more than 5 years.

In the end, only you can decide what best fits your situation.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
can be set for either 87 or 93 octane performance.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
"The earliest you might expect a 2002 is about October" ?????????

Not for a 1500. I bet late june early july you will start seeing 2002's hitting the lots

Mark you dont have to run a higher octane unless you change the thermostat and other things. I only changed the speedo. Doesnt involve what octane i run. Running 87 and it runs fine.
  • jaguar0027jaguar0027 Member Posts: 387
That is pretty much what I thought. Ryan what would you do if you were in the market for a new Silverado?

    Jim
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
first week of June....I'd check with the dealer every couple weeks until June.....then a couple times a week to see when he can order....

why pay all that cake for something that's not exactly what you want?

Ordering is the only way for me

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Well if i was buying another truck it wouldnt be a 1500. I gotta side with TIM (he is converting me) Id order a 2500 CC. I was in a hurry to order mine cause i didnt have a vehicle of my own. If i did have my own vehicle id probably wait for the new model to come out. I was impatient. I cant say i am complaing. Go with your gut feeling. Either way (01 or 00) you wont be disappointed
  • mtrammellmtrammell Member Posts: 125
I've posted this Q before and haven't received any response. It has been a couple of months and getting close to 2002 order time, so I thought I'd try it again.

I'm looking for Comments on the Duramax/Allison combo - performance/handling/mileage/etc...

I want to order a 2500 CC LB. The order info (minus pricing) is now available at the dealerships. The 2500 has two tone paint option this year. Of course, that doesn't mean it will be available, but it's there. Also noticed that the Duramax torque is going up 40lbs to 560 in the 2002 models.

The dealer here has almost 500 trucks on the lot. Only about 30 HDs and not a single Duramax. Are these just hard to get or are they just not a popular option?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Reg. cab Duramax's on the lot.....but I'd imagine every other one sells....they are hard to get right now.

as for handling/performance....everyone has raved about how good they drive and handle....including myself as I have driven 2 CC HD's and 1 Ex.Cab HD....1 6.0 and 2 8.1's.....I would imagine a Duramax would drive just as well...just a little louder...but the same get up and go...

Mileage for the Duramax?.....I don't really pay attention to that as I shop for Gas models....I'd say about 17MPG??....anyone???.

Allison trans is a very good name .....but this series is new as well.....most people say they have a few whines and clunks...but this is normal for a true truck trans.....and there have been a few cases of them not performing as they should....getting stuck in gear and I think someone said slipping??.....

    Overall...Order one....you won't be un-happy. I'll be getting a CC Allison....no Duramax though....I like to hear myself think...gimme an 8.1!

    Good Luck

Trailer Life has it at 20.3. I'm thinkin' that may be the way to go.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
today for the first time i have seen a new S-10 CC

Nice indigo blue. They arent bad little trucks if you dont need a bed.

It also has a really neat pinstripe and at the front fender has a small bowtie in the pinstripe.

Been noticing this alot. Is it something new?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
6-7 more mpg than an 8.1 or 3-4 more than a 6.0 just ain't worth it to deal with the GHJTGYTYUITRYURTYUIFTYUIFHJGKLGYUITYUITYUITYUIDSDFSRSRSETRSTRYSRTYSRTY
    sound of a diesel!

My first 2 tanks were, 22, and 21, but my reg cab 6 spd, logically speaking SHUOLD be the economy combo.

My dealer has a Duramax/Allison crew cab LT on the lot right now. About $45k and it's yours.

    Availability is getting better.
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
My 2001 Tahoe had that goofy pinstripe with the plastic bowtie medallion on it...I made the dealer take it off....

When I traded in my 99 rado for a 01, I was about an eyelash away from getting the CC, except for two (possibly three) shortcomings:

    1. Heavier drivetrain doesn't allow for Autotrac (gotta love that Autotrac!)
    2. We travel alot, and always with 2 (and sometimes 3) black Labs. Due to the much sturdier rear seats, the HD has no place to stow both luggage and dogs inside (and I hate wet luggage as much as I hate wet dogs)
    3. I usually don't haul people, but if I did, I would hate for all of my passengers with shoe sizes over 8 1/2 to trip on the lower rear door pillar.

However, I will definately reconsider once I start needing a gooseneck.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    1 - I want autotrac too....but oh well..it's not a must!

    2. - not sure I understand what you are saying...seat down...luggage under and dogs on seat?
...rear CC seats when folded are very solid....and you can do a 60/40 combo up and down...

    3. - toohigh you are saying?.......get some new friends that are taller!

    LOL

    .....get that gooseneck ready boss!

    Read this at www.blueovalnews.com

Seems the CEO want to rid the company of
most white faced males by 2007.

Who does he think built the company.

Oh Yea just look at those dark skinned
    countries, such proposeous regions.

So thankful never had to be part of the
work environment that dealt with this
stuff. If this comment is true and
owned Ford stock it wouldn't be for
long. Could GM be far behind

Just got back from my first lengthy - well not too lengthy - trip of about 500 miles. Went to Seattle down to the water front, so had to contend with some stop and go traffic, including an accident which tied things up a bit. Most was freeway driving at around 70 to 85 mph, with a short burst to 95mph. For the entire trip, I averaged 61.2 mph, and one 75 mile stretch, I averaged almost 74 which included my stop at the gas station, then a stop on the other end. I averaged 12.88 mpg for the trip - WONDERFUL! I really like that engine/trans combination. Going up and down 5% grades in cruse control at about 80mph, I don't think the speedometer moved a half mile an hour, going up or down.

You also have to consider that such a mandate must have "Board" approval. And what is the Board made up of? Rich WASPs. Could it be to get them in line with EEO requirements?

    Actually, they're really quiet.

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..QuietER.....but they are still a diesel

Father in law replaced his 95 CC Powerstroke with a 2001...and raved about how much quieter it was...so we went out and fired it up......it's still a diesel..

  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
He's gonna get that *quiet* running 8.1L gasser. His first trip in it, to the muffler shop where he puts on the loudest flowmasters or gibsons. Next trip is to the sounds parlor getting it amp'd up so he can hear over the flowmasters! So much for quiet trucks!
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
I would rather listen to the sound of that Diesel than the sounds of that allison transmission anyday. I test drove an 8100 allison, and noticed 2 things, it is just about as loud (tranny) as a diesel (which I would rather listen too), and I think the tranny really sucked some life out of the motor, I would love to drive a 6 spd 8100. But probable stick to the D/A for me.

    Hunter
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
allison is louder than the duramax. Maybe I could live with the sound of the diesel....but no way...the smell.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
    About like a kerosene lamp.

Just never get raw diesel fuel on your hands. Worse than bong water. Smell never goes away.

    Haven't noticed any smoke though....
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Stock exhust is fine for me...

    the 2 - 8.1/Alli's I drove had some tranny noise....but louder than a diesel?....uhhhh...what you smoking boss?....cuz I sure would like some!

    LOL

Now radio noise is farrrrrr better than a disel noise....

I understand yawl....a manly sound of a diesel....but I got other ways to be manly!

    LOL

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
heck no the diesel smell doesnt go away. I always get it on me at work when filling up the forklifts. Its a horrible smell
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Has anyone ever ridden a Diesel cycle? My thermo profs used to show us their Diesel cycles all the time, but wouldn't let us ride them.

(OK, that's corny...need my morning coffee.)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    thermo?

    Dynamics?

Ill be taking that class this summer in about a month
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Yeah...thermodynamics. Great subject, but wildly confusing at times. Just think of every problem like a puzzle and you'll do fine. Don't know what your major is, but for me, Thermo I and II were preludes to IC engine classes, which were really cool.

Make sure you get to your bookstore and get a can of entropy spray. You'll need it. ;-)
