That's a tough one. To prove premature glass failure. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

The pics of the storage bin construction are great, but a bit on the large size. In the future, if you're going to post pics, use as small an image as you can to help keep things loading as fast as they can. And if you have something that really needs a large image, just post a link to the image instead.

But a round of applause for the DIY attitude! I love it when people make things that they need!

The windshield could have possibly cracked due to heat/cold near a retaining clip. I have heard of this happening before, and it was covered under warranty. It will depend on the location of the retaining clip and where the crack started. It will be possible to verify that a chip from debris is to blame. Good luck!

doesn't always have to have a chip mark showing that started it...

I have a nice crack....a rock hit high on the winshield and I thought it hit the roof.....a few days later.....I had a nice crack along the windshield..

Just say a rock hit it

one of the dumbest things i have ever read

"An inoperative driver-side daytime running light, most likely a burned-out bulb."

no way a light bot workintg because of a burnt out bulb? Not on a truck with 37K miles.

all i have to say is if your a country fan you will get this

    "HERES YOUR SIGN"

no i'm not saying that the windshield won't be covered under warranty, but you first said that you thought the wind. might have cracked from cab flex, which gives concern to some of us, and now you say that you've shot the wind. with a cold blast of water while it was hot. doesn't really matter either way, as the glass is tempered to take some hot and cold abuse, but cab flex would have to be proved. since GM no longer uses so called retaining clips(haven't for some time now), it will be hard for you to prove what caused the crack. it says nothing about how the glass is covered under warranty(causes) which just makes me think that they will try to weasal out of it. then again there are those dealers that see a customer as a repeat customer, and will go the extra mile to get GM to fess up. i certainly hope you have one of these dealers in your corner. if you've found no visible evidence of a chip or scratch, then it will most likely be a warranty issue. i hope you get it replaced free of charge, and that you'll also let us know what the resolution was.

Thanks for all the input. I found one at an out-of-town dealership and drove it this weekend. It doesn't sound like any diesel engine I've ever heard - very quiet and there was NO diesel smell at all. I actually stood at the exhaust - and no smell. I did hear a bit of tranny whine at low speed, but nothing unbearable. If this combo is going to get 18 - 20 average mpg, it is definitely going to be my next truck. BlackMax, Thanks for finding the truck, but the LT I'm ordering is going to run right at $38k (assuming the prices don't increase over 2%). Ain't no way I'm gonna pay $45k for any pickup.

On another note, my old 77 silverado has payed me back again. First time it saved me $500 on my 2K Silverado with the loyalty program. Now, due to a class action lawsuit concerning the gas tank, I received a certificate for $1000 off my next purchase. What a truck!!! Just keeps on giving.

How many places do you have pi memorized to?
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
6, but only because it fits into a hockey chant from Michigan Tech that way. Engineers just hit the pi key on their HP-32SIIs and don't worry about memorizing the decimal places.

BTW, the offical value of Pi in the Ford design manual is 3.872559.

Use to be 50 digits when I was a young geek, but now that I'm an old geek, I've slipped a few decimal places.

BTW, irrational numbers make great passwords on systems where you have to change it every month or so. Just add a digit or 2 each time!

Has anybody had their seatbelt start making a squeeking noise? Mine started a few weeks ago so I mentioned it to the dealer not expecting them to do anything about it and they took one look at it and ordered a new seatbelt assembly. Kinda strange but if it doesn't make anymore annoying noises then thats fine with me. The noise was a squeek when I had the belt on and I moved slightly in my seat. It got to be very annoying. Oh well thats one squeek/rattle down...about 10 more to go.

    pi is too easy.

How many significant digits do you have e memorized to?

    21 significant digits for e

The assist has always been 2.7 Andrew Jackson Squared Isosceles Right Triangle 23536.

    2.71828182845904523536

The numbers you have to remember, Andrew Jackson was elected in 1828, that appears twice (hence squared), there is only one isosceles right triangle (45-90-45), then you only have to remember the 23536 and you are at 21 significant digits.

that's cool ol buddy. i just figured you'd eventually give an answer, and we could be at least as interesting as this Pi conversation of late. LOL
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
Not sure if this is related, but mine is going in tomorrow to have some seat belt campaign done. They have to remove the seats to replace the seat belt components. Just got a notice in the mail a few weeks ago. If you need it I'll post back later with more details.

I never got a notice mine just started making noise. Thanks for the offer for the number but my dealer won't even talk to me if I don't have the paper in my hand. I tried that with the brake recall and they made me wait till I got the paper.

Why waste your time rounding? Why not be exact and use 22/7, make your calculations, then round the result to whichever decimal place of accuracy you need.
  • surferstud98surferstud98 Member Posts: 2
I went to my local Chevy Dealership here in NM, and I had one of the salespeople build me a 2001/2002 silverado extended cab, sport side fully loaded. He said that he would sell me the 2001 for 100 over invoice, and if I wanted to wait I could get the 2002 at the same deal, but I would have to wait because the prices for 2002 have not come out yet. I am just wondering if this is a good deal or should I try and get it lower?
  • bamatundrabamatundra Member Posts: 1,583
22/7 is an approximation of PI. Depending on the accuracy requirements of your calculation, that may be sufficient.

It is within .04% of the real value.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
we can rename this topic "Silverado Equations" too. the old title is old anyways. LOL
now what could be in this here box......
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
I like the metric system way better. the heck with fracs and d-points as metric is just a simple number system. it's gonna be interesting to see how many pocket protecter guys are really here though.

I just recieved an "urgent recall" notice in the mail. The recall number is 00093. Does anyone know what this is about?

Great! It happened today, 45,000 miles which just happens to be my lease limit. Now I get to count .15 cents every mile I drive until the end comes in October. 55 miles this afternoon cost me $9, not including gas. No one to blame either but myself and my wife!

Question, I skipped on the most expensive parts of the 36,000 mile service, will that make any difference when the lease is up? Just didn't feel like a few items and cleaning the injectors was worth $275+!!!!!

Got a card in the mail saying to call dealership
but no mention what involves. Have not called
    yet if will.
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
Not sure about the # but I but it's about the brake line rubbing the frame.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
probably if thats the case its nothing major

however when i got my recall it explained what was wrong. Said call the dealer and make an appt to get it fixed because they now have parts to repair it. It didnt say anywhere about it being urgent. Maybe its a second notice?

    Hi all,
I just drove home my blue 2001 Z71 Extra Cab three days ago. Ordered it May 25, drove it home May 4. I have been over it with a fine tooth comb, and so far it is perfect. It is just so big! (My first full size truck).
I would like to get a service manual, but GM books are kind of steep for routine maintenance. Does anyone make an after market manual? I can not find Chilton's web site.

for free as long as the vehicle is on the road no matter who the owner....or....risk failure due to the recall...whichever comes first. Course some think it's no big deal......
  • ricobeachricobeach Member Posts: 29
Try checking "www.haynes.com" for the Haynes repair and service manuals. The part number for the newer Silverado trucks is 24066. The manuals are sold online and at places such as Pep-Boys, Trak Auto, Auto Zone, etc. They typically run between $10-$15.
I had a hard time finding the new Silverado manual so I simply had the Pep-Boys, parts counter people order me the one that I needed. Only took two days to get it in.

These manuals are good for doing normal maintainence and basic repairs but I would not expect them to help you much with very complicated repairs and diagnosis.

.oh they are a big deal to me....that's why I have already had the recall done and the clip changed..

  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
at these RECALL notices, is that they are sent via normal carrier. now if a guy doesn't get it taken care of, and ...well....has an accident, who's the liability going to fall on? i know that if it were me, i'd deny ever recieving such notice and let GM get sued up the whammy. but if i had recieved the notice by certified mail, then GM's off the hook right? i guess they're just trying to save a buck, so they can afford all the rework. besides, anyone who owns a GM product is going to run right down and have the work done right? GM's relying on their customers to be honest, you know, just like they are.

Just a quick question WTF is "e" and what is it used for?

I can only operate and repair power plants, not design them. I get enthalpy and entropy confused. My version of thermo: more heat equals more energy. Hot goes to cold. And the most important thermo law, "The more heat on you, the less heat on me."

And you young engineers (by education and training), who made you slide rule and can you still use it? I still have one but it only makes a good straight edge.

And the way to tie this into topic, what is the equation to check speedometer/odometer changes when you change you tires/wheels?

I know it, I just wanted to get this to topic.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
e is a vowel. It works as a lubricant in words so your tongue doesn't get stuck on too many consonants.

In math, it's a natural exponent. I refuse to open my old calc book to look at the origin.

Creeping up on 1000 miles. Get to play with oil soon. The rear door rattle appears, then hides, then appears, .....and hunting season is only 4 months away.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
e is base for natural logarithms.

Natural logs are used to determine many natural phenomena, such as the charging of a capacitor in the stereo on your Silverado.

    Mike L
  • navy4navy4 Member Posts: 44
Gee, I only thought you charged a capacitor (or condensor, to show you how old I am) and tossed it to you buddy and see his face as it discharged in his hand. Have you ever made a flourescent light glow with your tongue and a megger?

I digress. Enthalpy, a state of chaos. I just remembered that.

slide rule? haha yea i know what it is never used one however.

MICH only 1K? I am almost to 14,500 time for the next oil change next wk.

...ok....you asked me...here is my answer..

"E" is the two letters between "B" and "R"

    - Tim
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
on the used guards ryan? i know you said they were only 9 months old, but i feel it's more important to know how many miles are on them, and whether or not they are still under warranty.

Anyone out there have a low pitched squeak or creeking noise? It happens moving slowly over uneven ground and every time I slow to a stop. At first I thought it was the torsion bars where they mount under the cab, but all the WD-40 in the world wont stop it! As you may have guessed, the GM tech said this was normal! I told him it didnt sound normal, but he insisted that it was.
Please help me. I know I cant be the only one with this problem.
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Is the first letter in my name, but more appropriately (per Tim) the two vowels in the only acceptable 4 letter word.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Put a socket wrench on the bolts that hold the cab to the frame, through the rubber pads. If it squeaks when you torque it, take it to the dealer, and let them deal with it, replacing pad, bolt, and lubing it.
