Found two PF-59 oil filters at my local Autozone for $3.49! Grabbed them up right away since my first choice, Walmart, doesn't have them yet.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Cheapest I've seen yet...next to the one's that Ryan claims to have bought for $.50

I have 10 sitting in a cabinet in my garage. I paid 50 cents each for them

Ryan just be cautious, We've had numerous
trucks on the farm that have had grills and
bumpers welded to the frame. Bolts gave out
    so had hands (workers) weld.
Its surprising how something will bend at a
    seemly trivial task.

Anyone ever rent a lawn tractor?

Just curious if so how much they charged you

Reason i ask is we have a trailer on a lake about a football fields length of grass. I cut half back first wk of may. Grass was higher than my knees (i am 6'3). What i cut i cut 4 times. 5 hrs of cutting the grass by hand wore me out. Our garden tractor is broken. I am thinking of renting a tractor (the larger the better)

    Thanks

The automatic transmission in the 1/2 ton Silverado does no have more torgue in reverse. It has the most torgue in first.

    Check it out,

    http://www.gmpowertrain.com/transmissions/4l60_main.htm

To add to this, I would not pull a stuck vehicle with my silverado in reverse unless there was no other way. Pulling in reverse in 4 wheel drive places a huge torgue load on the front axles/differential. This differential has an aluminum case. This is definitely the weakest link. I have had the complete front differential replaced already........

  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Sure did well in the offset crash tests by the insurance agency.... The silverado was marginal, with the ford and Dodge being poor.

Wonder how my new 2500HD CC LB would do?

Ryan, since you already have that tough grille guard, I suggest that you head down to your local John Deere dealer and have one of those Bad Boy belly mowers installed on that Rado. If you want to save a few bucks, just hook up a tow behind to one of the drive shafts. LOL

But the Tundra dummy got a broken leg. You can learn a lot from a dummy!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I have always hooked up stumps/cars/trucks to the front tow hooks and pulled in reverse with 4WD..

    never had any problems

Did someone mention a site where you can lookup info on your truck by the VIN number (for free, I found the carfax.com site) I tried using the board search utility and I'm afraid its completely useless. It will tell you which threads contain the text string but not which message. With 100's and in some cases 1000's of messages per thread, its almost impossible to find the message. Too bad, there is a lot of good information in these threads.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
the search feature is totally useless.

My tow strap is rated at something like 6,000 lbs.
So I hope it breaks before the tow hooks come flying off.
Instead of flying off, won't they straighten out?

    -David
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
it was a joke doubt the tow hooks would fly off

Tow strap will more than likely break first. Watch out for the metal hooks on those when they go flying

How important is locking differential to a 1500/2500 with 4wd?

Saw a nice 2500 HD 4wd over the weekend but it didnt have locking differential. Not sure if I should buy it because of that. Thoughts?

    leather seats - not important
    AL wheels, autotranny,......
    power windows - not important
    CD - not important
    locker - very important

But, you know, it just depends on what you want....

Do you have a limited slip or Torsen/Gleason in your Vette? I wouldn't think of owning a sports car without some form of limited slip diff.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
well the S-10 is in the shop. never fully recovered. Hoping its only the fuel pressure regulator only thing my dad didnt fix cause he didnt have a gauge. Will get word tomorrow.

After picking him up from the dealership (i followed him there) we passed the new car lot. He seen a BASE 2500HD ext cab indigo blue w/black flares he goes "maybe i should get one of those think mom would like it" hmmm

I am definitely not very computer literate, so does someone know of a way I could search only "Chevy Silverado" for some of the messages regarding dual exhausts? I have tried to find some of the Posts, but no success. I am getting interested in duals, but remember someone saying that if not done correctly, it could reduce horsepower. A friend of mine just bought a GMC 2500 HD, 8.1 Allison and the dealer put on a set for him. I am kind of wondering if the dealer knew what they were doing, subbed it out, or simply was most interested in the money - I believe it was about $350. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You are right, you can learn alot from a dummy... Not from the ones on here such as yourself, but from the crash institute... What we learned was, the Tundra beat the Chevy... That's what the dummy taught us... I can break my leg shootin hoop, but it heals...
  • tomh12tomh12 Member Posts: 240
Toddstock, you might want to read that report carefully....seems the GM twins protected the people inside the truck better than the Tundra.
Most likely the extra room in the passenger compartment had a big effect on the passengers safety.

"It said the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and its sister vehicle, the GMC Sierra 1500, both manufactured by General Motors Corp. earned a "marginal" safety rating overall. The GM trucks won higher marks than the Tundra in terms of injury protection, but rated poorly for damage to the passenger compartment."
What part of this english do you not understand?

I'll take the broken leg, and let my wife be safer... But, that's just the kinda person I am... How bout it tom... Hope you would do the same for your signifigant other... Doesn't sound like you would... Do you understand that English Tommy boy

always use tow straps with hooks on them! It at least doubles the amount of shrapnel when everything goes south and provides the maximum of entertainmenet for the EMT's and the coroner.

I now remember why I quit posting here...You and others like you cannot carry on a conversation without resorting to personal attacks. You have no evidence from the cited test to corroborate your statements that your passengers would be safer. The IIHS test only tested a male driver dummy....although presented perfectly, I will not go there...

Thanks for the reply on the steel mill question. Either I was too young to understand back in those days or the Bethlehem plant(s) weren't as harsh. But then in the '50s, no one expected paint (or motors or clutches or anything else) to last more than a few years anyway.
See your dad's still having problems with the S-10. Maybe it's time for a new truck. Base models are a steal for anyone not addicted to power windows and all that other crap (I am). Still remember my first new 4X4; '75 Blazer. couldn't even get all this stuff on it and vinyl buckets were up-scale. Too damn bad I'm old and jaded; could have saved myself a lot of bucks with a stripper P/U or Suburban like we used to use in the military/missile fields.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I doubt he will get a new one. Once he retires yes. My mom wont let him buy a new one just yet. He could live with a base. His S-10 has NO power locks/windows. Bench seat plain radio (no cd no cassette).

I think he will go with a 4 wheel drive truck next. He hated this past winter me and my mom talking about how much fun it was driving he hated it. Slipping and sliding.

Hopefully the dealership can fix it tomorrow. They are very slow. Many of the mechanics were leaving at 3:30 when we went (they close at 5). Advisor didnt know why its so slow. Maybe gm's quality is getting alot better?

  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
You mean your dad's S-10 is a 2WD? Seems to me your Mom oughta be encouraging him to get a 4x4 with at least manual hubs / floor shifter before next winter if he's doing those truck roads to work on a regular basis. Think maybe she's after the life insurance?

Tom, don't let it get to you. Electronic communication always grants a bigger ego since it is only indirect communication. Regardless, not everyone has to agree.
As for this type of posting, definitely gets interesting sometimes!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
No hes had the truck since 92. If the roads are bad enough they close them and he doesnt go to work (only happened about 4 days). Two yrs ago in 99 he actually got stuck at work. He got paid for like 54 hrs straight i think it was because of a blizzard. Basically all he did was sleep.

Truck is a 2wd and he throws 5 bags of 70lb sand back there helps a little.

Life insurance? Haha my mom says he can keep smoking that way she will get it faster

...nahhhh..get the looped ones..easier to store and no metal to fly in the event of a break..

pulling backwards can be dangerous...especially with a chain...

usually it's the idiots with too small of chain and pulling wayyy to large of an object....the torque builds...the chain snaps...and launches itself right thru the window at the driver...

just don't go ape and it should be fine

....Tindra talk here?....oh geez.....time to go back to other sites I guess?

...they still offer them ginsu's with the Toy?.....or was it the toy with the ginsu's?

I can't remember.....but I think new Ado's come with a toy in the back for the kids to play with!?

..."Cuz them yuppy's be thinkin' it's full size...truth of the matter is....Tundra=Less truck for more buck!"

Good Luck on this one now!

    ......(what came over me....??)

    LOL

    Tim-
Has your 6.0L every had the ping that many with this engine complain about?

My 2001 GMC did for the first 6000 miles...not bad, but noticeable under mild to moderate acceleration. Did it with all grades of gas. No "winter" blends here, we have the same crap year 'round. Wifey drives the truck most of the time. One day while I was driving it, at about 6000 odomoter miles, I got on it at WOT while going about 35MPH and stayed on it to shift point. Hasn't pinged a single time since. I saw one other guy post a similar experience on another board. I find this a wonderful excuse to "enjoy" my 2500LD, when I drive it!
    Tom
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..you mean like a "too low of octane" ping?

never had that....with any grade gas..

I know my dad had problems in a few cars with cheap off brand gas at times....

sometimes around here you never know what's actualy in the ground at some stations.....so I go with Marathon/Mobil/Amoco...had good results so farr..(also know the actual owners....seem like good people)

I deal with a lot of Gas stations....and remember this one place....(nice guy..but not too bright). It was a Citgo...he ran it like crap....one day...he had some off brand name out front....turns out he was buying gas from a "black market" type guy and Citgo took their signs!.....then....that sign was gone a few later....he was still buying the cheap stuff!....he ran the station with nothing but prices outside...and soon ran himself out of biz.

where "it" comes from...I have no idea

On a related story....I have heard of where people will have a van with say a 300 gallon tank or so in the back hooked up to the spout outside....they go from station to station putting in 50 gallons or so with pay at the pump with stolen cards....and then go dump the gas in another station for a "discount" price...
...they get caught when they get lazy and the station they are taking it from notices a van has pumped 125 gallons at a time...and calls the cops.

    I'll tell ya

    - Tim
  • tomh12tomh12 Member Posts: 240
The pinging was like running too low octane gas. But I always buy from the same well run station except when travelling out of the area. Maryland requires reformulated gas year 'round. Tried all octanes with no noticeable difference. Most of my miles are local with no merging on interstates or hard exceleration...that's the only change...I make a point to get on it hard once in a while now. Thing is, after the first time I did it, pinging stopped IMMEDIATELY...on the same trip, the very next time I moderately excelerated...no ping.

How many people hit immobile objects with the drivers side?

They're using a deformable testing block, but it doesn't move, like an oncoming car would.

How did they get a Tundra up to 40 mph?
