Chevy does offer a larger tank for the Silverado, but you have to get the 8' bed. The LB comes with a 34 gal tank.

If your torque wrench only goes to 250 inch lbs, how do you torque the lug nuts when you rotate the tires?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Didnt torque em. put the air gun up there and let it rip (its less than whats recommended dont get scared)

Im getting good at the tire thing. Took the rears off a few times (check my brakes). My times are going down. I see indy (pit crew) in my future.

Also i did get a torque wrench from my gf's dad. I think i am going to buy one one of these days

I've read that especially with disc brakes, it's best to torque the lug nuts to the proper specs to avoid warping the discs.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
well if they arent over torqued then they cant warp
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
    WRONG grasshopper!

Even though you may not have over tightened them, if you have not tightened them EQUALLY the rotors may warp. This is due to the fact that the tighter lugs will stretch more and pull at the axle/hub flanges at a different rate. Thermal cycles will in fact over time cause the unequal torque settings to allow the rotor to take a set = warp...then throw in Rotor Thickness Variation (RTV) and now ya got pulsation and maybe noise too. I talk to a number of techs on a daily basis, concerning comebacks, who think that their air impact is more precise than a torque wrench.

but then you were waiting to see me come out of the woodwork on this one.

How long till it shows up?

Been awhile since i rotated them. Also dads been using his air gun to tighten his lug nuts for 10 yrs on his truck with no problems.

Also thanks for the rear diff lube change.

Now one more favor (please) in the helms manual is there a listing for the torque setting on shocks?
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
Yeah all that was said there is what you've said here...you and Jess are famous all over the world..heh heh

now how bout some shock torque specs hehe
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
    Front shocks:
    top nut = 18 lbs/ft
    (2WD) bottom bolts = 25 lbs/ft
    (4WD) bottom bolts = 59 lbs/ft

    Rear shocks:
    top and bottom = 70 lbs/ft

newer vheicles have less mass in hub flanges and rotor hubs...anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks

    matthew
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
That was quick didnt expect it

    THANKS FOR THE SPECS!!!

Only 18 ft lbs for the front top??? Sounds kinda low to me

..so you bought a 99 GMC eh?

as for torque....I've always used a t-square..no torque wrench and have never had warped rotors.

    It doesn't hurt to use one.....but I haven't yet

Hey Pogo, I just got back from the dealer yesterday, don't expect a real big discount on the Silverados, they are good selling trucks, I would expect a 2500 rebate tops, maybe less. If you are a family member of a GM employee or an employee yourself, it doesnt matter where you go, they have to give you the GM price. I recently bought a Silverado with the GM discount and I got around 4000 off the sticker, but it always depends on how much mark up the truck has. It is just up to you finding the color and style you want at any dealership because they can't hassle you. I bought my truck in May and my wife just bought a new Malibu two days ago on the GM discount, I love it.

The one thing you might have added that torques provided in manuals etc, are typically based on brand new bolts, nuts, etc - read no rust, damaged threads, etc. As your vehicle gets a little older you might want to add a few pound-feet to overcome the aging of the parts, but equally as you stated. Also, not a bad idea to have the torque wrench calibrated once in a while.

Ryan, only because I am sooooo anal, an autoimotive training instructor, and YOU are an aspiring engineer...might I please take a moment of your time to discuss torque?

As the theory goes and deals with a great deal of math formulas, which are too involved to discuss here, torque is measured in pounds of force divided by length of liner movement to move a specific weight, ie. pounds per foot.

Unfortunately it is often misrepresented as "foot pounds". I guess this is because it is uncomfortable to say "pounds foot" since the rules of the English language get in the way by saying that "f" comes before "p" in the alphabet.

But then I'm sure you know this....

    matthew

I'm sure that one of my previous instructors who corrected me on this subject, is rolling over in his grave right about now....heh heh

I'd like to use the onstar antenna on my HD as an external antenna for my cell phone. Has anyone tried it or knows of anyone who has? I understand GM is offering some type of cell ph. service but I'm not interested because I want to be able to take the ph. with me when I leave the truck. If anyone has a wiring diagram or know how its set up I'd appreciate the answers. Thanks in advance!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
actually my statics and dynamics teacher always said foot lbs.

Also we deal more with Newton meters than pounds per foot.

Also i know whats right and wrong just being lazy when i type. its easier to type ft lbs rather than pounds per foot you know

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
lbs. part of foot lbs. you state in your post? I understand the second statement AND you lose me on the last line....

"Also i know whats right and wrong just being lazy when i type. its easier to type ft lbs rather than pounds per foot you know"

Why do you abbreviate the first being ft lbs then type the second completely as pounds per foot rather you should type lbs/ft. If that's the whole story, I don't see much difference in one being more difficult to type than the other...you know.

freaking technical. Your going over my posts with a fine toothed comb
  • roger350roger350 Member Posts: 157
Just to get into the spirit of things, T=F*d not F/d. There is no "per" or "/" it is lb*ft or ft*lb. Neither is incorrect, as you can tell your old teachers that used to grill you for saying ft*lb that there is a little mathematical rule (Can't remember the freaking name) that says x*y=y*x. So, since you are not just memorizing formulas, but understanding concepts, you just remember it as lenght of the moment arm times the force, hence ft*lb

What is the thread size on the oil pan drain plug? I know it takes a 15mm wrench, and is around 10 X 1.5. But, having just put in fresh Mobil 1, I'm reluctant to pull the plug to measure the threads.

I need to know so I can buy a new drain plug. Eaton (Aeroquip) has just introduced a 'Quick-Drain' plug. The first part screws into the pan and has a quick release in the middle, kind of like an air hose fitting - no flow until you push in the fitting in the middle. The next part is a barbed fitting that snaps onto the first part. Put a hose onto the barb and connect it to the piece in the pan, and oil shoots out the hose. No muss, no fuss. They include a cap that acts as a seconday seal in between oil changes.

Anyway, TIA for the thread size.

    ft-lbs, lbs-ft...?
That's really being anal. Like saying it's more "proper" to state 2*3 instead of 3*2.
Tenure too long. Time for that teacher to retire Matt.
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
It's merely force applied through a distance, which induces rotation or a moment. MULTIPLY the force applied by the distance the force is applied from the center of rotation.
Force per distance is more like a spring constant.

    And while we're at it...pounds-mass or pounds-force?

    Sheesh.

I'm an engineer...I can espouse theory but can't fix my truck. ;-)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
what do you mean cant fix your truck?

LETS GET BACK TO TRUCKS GUYS

bad enough i have summer classes where i have to sit through 4 hrs of this stuff 3 times a wk

    Red,

$2500 is tops, then, thanks. You got yours in May, there was a $2500 incentive in May too, wasn't there? ...... Also, I just received a $500 internet discount certificate from GM just for requesting truck brochures from the GM website, $500 off of "cars and light duty trucks through October 1", good for 01 and 02 models. Wonder if "light duty" in this case means only standard 1500s, not HDs. I just print the certificate and take it to the dealer, that'll give me a total of $3000 below invoice off an 01, or $500 off of an 02. Waiting to see what styling and option changes show up for 02 before I decide, but sure hate waiting, when do 02s usually show up, August? ....... Didn't the rear slider windows have leakage problems, did GM fix that problem on the new models?...... Chris

    Just bought my 2001 1500 ext cab 4wd Z71.
Received a $1000.00 certificate from GM on the
Silverado as well as the $1000.00 I received when I went to the GM Truck Show in Motion.
$4500.00 off of the price just in incentives..
    I am still in disbelief...
Truck show in motion certificates are transferrable
    to friends and family... FYI

Does anyone know of a way to disable the turn signal clicking, it's driving me nuts. Also is there a way to turn off the door chimes. I have a 1500HD and I assume all chevys are the same concerning this question

The more theory you learn, the less capacity exists in your head for practical knowledge. Behind every good engineer is a better technician.

Trucks you say. This high humidity is making my nerf/isolation bushings squeak like crazy. They wants grease! They wants it bad!

Where are you getting your info. on rebates and incentives at? Edmunds is only showing a $1000 cash incentive? What sight did you get the additional $500 certificate for requesting a brochure, I requested one and nothing happened? How do you get these additional certificates, and how do you find out about them? Are these just regional incentives, and if so what region is giving them?
    Thanks,
    Ken

What with Autozone? Go buy Edelbrocks from shockwarehouse.com; on your doorstep in a few days. If you really want Bilsteins, they carry them, too.

remembering the discussion of combustion last year, let's not go there, but this is interesting to see how everyone perceives a common issue. It is gratifying to see how we can learn a lot from each other and grow from the expierences of our cyber friends.

Quad...I think that Mario is probably dead by now, but it is funny how things stick in your mind from so long ago...just can't remember what I did with stuff yesterday...he he "senior moment"

Turn signal click and door alarm...there used to be a tool (think I still have one) that clipped onto the door jamb switch and rotated to hold the button in, but I don't readily see the switch anymore...gotta check the wiring diagram for how this system works now.

As for the loud turn signal flasher, maybe it is to alert drivers that the turn signals are on, so people don't drive around with it on, never making that turn (drive around in New England for a while and you will see what I mean). Many years ago Stant had a "Soft Click" flasher, not sure if it is still around. Interestingly enough, I have had it happen to me and after a while a "chime" alarm will sound to indicate it is on...yeah just turn the radio up louder.

it's all sensors in the door and jam now. I couldn't tell you what vehicle it was on now, but I remember seeing several brass contact points on a door jam and matching small brass nubs on the door.

    Here on the west coast...
I saw an ad on tv advertising $2500 in incentives or
low apr on Silverados. Edmunds did not reflect that on their site as well. Upon inquiry at the dealer, I discovered it was true... $2500 in cash incentives on the truck I wanted. I was able to add the $1,000 certificate I received from the "GM Truck Show In Motion". This is a traveling display of GM Trucks and SUV's pitted against the compettition. Anyone who has one of these certificates can request an additional certificate
for their family and friends. Mine was set to expire on 8/31/2001.
I also received in the mail (don't know why)
an additional $1,000 towards a 1500 Silverado. This was some special mailer that went out in early July. I guess I was on some mailing list for something.
All I can say is call the local dealers and find out what the current incentives are. (if they will give you that info.) I will try to remember, but I have a number to call, I am at work and the number is at home. On this number they were also able to look up the current incentives by region. They were not able to tell me the interopability of the incentives but they did confirm the existence. End result... I had $4,500 off after I negotiated the TMV on my New Pewter 2001 Silverado Ext cab LS Z71. I love it...
