needs some Viagra. He's awful young to be having these problems. Maybe all the Z71 stickers are giving his truck performance anxiety!

    ....I guess so?

all the manly hood went into the truck?

    haha

.....and what did she say Ryan?

I just got the rubber things on my leaf springs. I can't believe how quiet it is going over bumps now!

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
did you buy them or under warranty fix? If you bought them how much?

I seem to have a noise from them only going over RR tracks.

    Ryan
  • mpalombompalombo Member Posts: 186
It was covered under warranty, and without any argument from the service guy either. It actually seemed like its pretty common, he called the parts counter to make sure they had them in stock and he said "You know those rubber bumpers we put on the Silverados" Kind of sounds like a common problem to me.

I remember reading somebody posting that they were around 30 or 35 dollars from the dealer.

My noise was weird, it only did it certain bumps and not always the bigger ones either. It nice and quiet now.

BTW. Bumpers and LOF 1 hour and 2 test drives???

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
seems its only the smaller bumps

I only hear it over two specific rr tracks. Only time i have yet to hear it happen elsewhere.

Looks like new shocks are in my future. I found bilsteins at offroadwarehouse.com for $49.99 a pair. Comes out to about $210 with shipping cheapest besides that was like $240.

Probably order them tonight or tomorrow.

Anyone care to purchase some slightly used "Z71" (tennecos) shocks? Tim better jump on this. You can claim you have an offroad LD 2500

You can get an emblem 2500Z71LD

  • mrurlmrurl Member Posts: 116
You having those shocks couriered in or are you buying 8? $49.99 a pair times 2 = $99.98. Paying $110 for shipping?

My mistake i said $49.99 a pair should have said $49.99 each

Hi Guys, Its MEEEEE (long time no talk)

My '99 2500 Silverado make a "ticking" or some type of noise usually at cold start. I will probably take it in, but was wondering what you guys thought or if a similar problem was mentioned here... I don't think this has been happening too long. It's a pain to take it to the dealer - (they have to keep it overnight, then cold start it).

If someone could also lead me to a post with this problem that would be great!

    Cindy :)

As I said in an earlier post I got my insulators put on the leaf spring today. I just looked at the bill and noticed how they wrote it up:

"Installed spring insulators as per recall"

I don't know if there is a recall or if thats just how they wrote it up.

    -Mark
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    there is a recall.

    Probably their excuse

    Hey Ryan, (thanks)
I went to pickuptruck.com - I was reading about the piston knock, it doesn't sound too much like a rod knock, its more like a 'ticking'.

Hmmm, may have to take it in.

Hey, by the way, I had a window motor replaced on the passenger side already.

Did you see the "discussion" with Derek (the host/moderator) and one of the posters? He gets a little testy.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yea but i think alot of people are blowing the whole thing outta proportion. Also that guy started like 10 topics about the cold start knock thing. Why not keep it to one?
  • mpalombompalombo Member Posts: 186
I replaced my cabin air filter last night. I believe GM recommends replacing it at 10,000 miles? Mine was 18,000 the truck is just over a year old. I thought to myself 10,000 just doesn't seem long enough. It was pretty dirty.

BTW, It was wicked easy to do even with the center console.

    -Mark
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i believe the recommended time for changing is once per year. Changed mine back in april had some leaves. Kinda dirty.

So TIM ya change yours yet?

noise? Does it seem to come from the upper part of the engine? Could be a normal condition with the fuel delivery system? Just a shot.
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
I have had this problem for about two years on my three year lease. It is noticeable when your first start the engine after a long off period. I have read everything I could find from poor gas, octane rating, timing issues, deposits and etc. I honestly believe something in the engines design (5.3) is not right. I think I've seen more 1999 owners with this problem but I am sure there could be some 2000 owners with it as well. Anyway, my point is I have decided not to purchase this vehicle just in case it does have "issues" that noone seems to want to admit! I plan on replacing it with a new model Silverado, maybe the 6.0 but haven't decided when.
IMO, I believe it to be something in the heads, ie. the lifters or something not getting proper oil!

    Good Luck,
    Dano
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Well it looks like its not going to be resolved anytime soon. So if you don't want the tick, you may have to buy another brand. They said it would be resolved with the 2001 models...apparently not. If that being the case, what's the odds on 2002.

    Hello everyone,
I have been looking over the forum and it appears to have ALOT of useful info here. I have just purchased a '00 Rado Z71 extended cab. Had the black flares but ten minutes in the driveway and I took care of that! You're right they looked BAAAD. I took it to my hunting camp on Wednesday and was quite disappointed when I was in 4wd.
    Symptoms:
    1. In 4hi the power was very sluggish.
    2. In 4lo when you pressed the gas the motor would rev for a minute and then the truck would start to move forward and then LURCH forward! It was almost like I had my foot on the gas waiting for a the lights to change. Looks like it's time to visit the dealer! Any suggestions? Has anyone noticed this with theirs? When I test drove on pavement the 4wd worked ok. I am really confused about this.
Also The dang OIL CHANGE LIGHT will not go out. Any suggestions (other than change my oil) :D

    Thanks
    Mike

Suggest you read your owners manual before proceeding to the dealer.....

I gotta say thanks to all you smart folks out there. I'm mechanically inclined and educated, but not real experienced (embarassing) with automotive repair. But I'm learning and gaining just by watching. Granted most of my posts here are goofy, but what the heck....

Today, by my lonesome, I changed the oil in my 5.3L engine, on a lift, using dino oil (4400 miles) and a PF59 AC Delco filter. Total cost was $16, plus the opportunity to examine the underside of my rig and see what was stuck to the drain plug magnet. I worked slow and deliberate and it still only took 50 minutes. Can't get that at QuickeeLube.

This is really cool stuff when I get time to do it.

    Thanks again.

Hi! I've been reading these boards for a half year, hope I'm on the right board here. Great info from Dean, Tim, Ryan, and others that I've copied to my files.

I'm considering buying a new 01 or 02 extended cab 1500 truck on a family member's GM certificate. I'm wondering what kind of discount dealers will give on the 2001s when the 02s come out, trying to decide which to get. A few dealers have told me to expect no more than a $2500 incentive on the 01s, but someone told me last week that it could be a lot higher, $7000, that doesn't seem possible, what did they offer last year, anyone know?

Sure wish they'd offer a larger gas tank as an option on the standard ext cabs, but don't think they do, do they? Anyone have one of the composite Pro-Tek beds, wondering how they like it, thats only a Z71 option, right? I was thinking of buying from the closest GM dealer here in Los Angeles south bay, for convenience sake, but if there's a better dealer further away that will stand by me if I have problems, I'd rather go to him, anyone have a preferred dealer in the area? Be back tonite, thanks....Chris

  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
I'm not gonna buy another brand, no way. Is the tick/knock/noise only in the 5.3 or do you know of anything with the other engines?

    Thanks,
    Dano
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    The 6.0 has it also.

    Quad-

You forgot the brain damage....excessively speaking....

    pogo11

Welcome to edmund's...but you've been here for half a year...so it's like welcome back...wish I could help with your questions but I don't qualify for the first and live a little too far to recommend a dealership.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
did I also mention the 5.7 and 7.4? Hmmm...only one left out is the 4.8...course the 4.3 is a chopped 5.7 so maybe it too? What's funny is that they all are starting to sound like Quad's 6.6....
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Don't forget...the Ford 5.4L Triton has piston slap, and the 4.7L I-Force in the runtdra has valve ticking. I guess that leaves Dodge as about the only dependable engine choice. Of course, if you didn't know that it's normal for engines to make some noises, they might think the exhaust note is major cause for buyback if they can't fix after the 4th try.
  • lonewolf867lonewolf867 Member Posts: 3
I got the remark about the owners manual for the oil light but any suggestions about the power loss? That is what has me aggrivated. Dealer said it was normal. My 97 NEVER di anything like that.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I've used mine many times in 4wd, both hi and lo, and have never noticed the power loss symptoms you mentioned. The only way I can even tell I'm in 4-hi is the steering in tight turns, the power is exactly the same as 2wd. It seems odd that you don't notice it on the street. Maybe it was the terrain you were on??

In 4-lo, it is kind of jumpy and sensitive to throttle because of the gear ratio vs. power available. It does seem to rev and jump forward but that is just from the tranny shifting. In the lower gears the engine rpm hits the shift point very quickly while the truck is still going slow, then once a ratio is hit where you can get some speed, the truck jumps forward. This is normal.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I agree with what vince4 has posted. Experienced no loss of power in 4wd and it is jumpy in 4 lo.

    Canoe, canoe?

Where did you go in Southern Indianna?

I fly into Evansville occasionally. Have to look at an ugly Tundra in the airport terminal when I pick up a rental car and luggage.

Today is the day for the rear differential, isn't it? Let us know how it goes.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
went canoeing on sugar creek in bloomingdale indiana. Its by turkey run state park. Also went there and did the VERY RUGGED TRAIL HIKE. 1.7 miles of uphill downhill muddy wet trails. Alot of fun. Only bad thing is we could only do the 4 mile canoe trip instead of the 15 mile because the water was low.

The canoe place is right off US 41.

Yep rear diff fluid and oil is getting changed again.

Also might go order shocks at autozone if i get time ($49.95 each)

    Ryan
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Oil change done. It gets easier everytime. Only spilled 3 drops this time.

Cant do the rear end yet. Torque wrenchs only goes to 250 inch lbs and 29 n.m. For the rear end i need 30 ft.lbs or 40 n.m so i am waiting to see if my gf's dad has one. If not looks like ill be buying one or waiting till my dad can get one from work.

    Ryan
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
Did you also lube the front end? It's always a good idea to also do that when changing the oil, especially when you have a lift. You should find 11 fittings... three on each wheel and five in between.
  • 64roadster64roadster Member Posts: 19
What type of grease do you recommend for the front end lube points? I've got a 2001 1500 2WD extended cab.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
I use Mobil 1, which is a synthetic and available locally, although any synthetic should be just as good. I keep my vehicles for a really long time so I'm more inclined to go with synthetics. If it's a lease that goes back in three years, then go el cheapo. I also run Mobil 1 oil and filters and I plan on putting Mobil 1 in the rear diff. Some people swear by Royal Purple for the rear diff, but I've never seen it here locally.
