Keep the raised whites at the store and go with blackwalls....

I agree with the 70's theory....if you have a 70 Chevelle.....then go with raised whites.....a 2002 Chevy truck......black walls...While I know Ryan likes them (no harm meant pal)

...I think the tons of black looks good...(and no....not cuz my tires are blackwalls and the truck is black)

    special colors...

I see many Orange trucks for DPW type trucks and utility cvompany trucks....(since new body came out)...and several Yellow Dewalt trucks....

I seen a Yellow CC HD one time not too long ago.....don't think it was a work truck though

I have a '71 Chevelle and I have always used the blackwalls.

I really wish the red and white stripes would come back in style!!

    NOT!

Is it possible to remove the screen on the stock unit and gain some performance?
  • gator36gator36 Member Posts: 294
My 2 cents is to keep black walls out...

Swirls, I have had excellent luck with Meguires Swirl remover on
my last truck, Black 97 GMC But now I have a 01 Silverado Z71.
Just not as much addons as Ryan.

Sickening sound from my Garage last week..
    Thud!

    Bump!

    BANG!!!!

Weedeater came off of the wall. Hit the quarter panel of my truck above the rear wheel.

4 Nice line dents.. I was pissed.

$150 later at Paintless Dent Professionals. You would never know.
Looks better than new.. Luckily it didn't scratch the paint.

    Blackwalls out it is...
I'll let ya'll know how I like the tires. I'll sure miss those Firestones....NOT!!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
That question has been asked many times...while not on this forum but others. Some have cut it out themselves and said not much difference in performance. Some have tried and screwed it up by cutting some wires that run vertically thus having to buy a new MAF anyway. Some have taken it to a locaal speed shop to cut out for a $50 charge and said it doesn't make much difference in performance. Granatelli says it has updated the "electronics" in the small black box on the top. I can't confirm this. By the results that were posted from people who have bought a Granatelli, almost all say they would do it again. What I've done is drive it with the stock and with the Granatelli swapping them in and out a couple of times. IMHO it does make a seat of the pants difference. Especially off the line.

Gator36, that sucks! I had a siimilar issue but with some railing I had removed and proped up next to our Pathfinder. I thought to myself, it'll be OK. Next morning bam, not to smart! I'll check out the Meguires swirl remover.
Dropped the truck off this morning at the Line-X shop. Going to get it at lunch.

on the Fleet colors. You can order them for a price.
I ran the black side out for years but have decided I like the look of the raised white letters on most trucks. A lot depends on the wheels too. Not so the white outlines though. Don't show up enough. IMHO of course.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    Oh yea

with the white walls the tread stands outmore. I hated white walls before i got these tire and i dont know they really look good to me.

It sucks not having a computer. I was subjected to watching the bears game (da bears!!!) and the world series.

I've never owned a set of Firestones in my life. I remember the infamous Firestone 500 fiasco. And then came the Firestone 721 fiasco. So I've totally avoided Firestones my entire life. Until last year. The Ford Explorer issue was going full blast when my truck came in. I asked if it was possible to get a different brand of tire. The fleet guy I was working with told me that GM Firestones were built to different specs and didn't have any systemic problems. I decided to accept the Firestones figuring if there was a recall I would get new tires, so whatever I put on the Firestones would be free driving. It has been a year now and I am extremely happy with my Firestones. They're great on ice and snow, and after 9000 miles, are showing no appreciable wear and I haven't even rotated them yet. I'm a fast driver and I brake hard at the last moment. I've never thought much about it, but I apparently scare the hell out of most people who drive with me. So my Firestones aren't being babied. I'm actually impressed by them. I should buy an extra set or two now, while the prices are good! If I lived closer to America I'd buy them from all you guys who are changing them out.

Trying to decide between the Weathertech and CatchAll brand of floors mats. I went by a local dealer here and I wasn't to impressed with the CatchAll except for the look. I thought they were a little light. The Weathertechs feel heavier since their rubber.
    Any thoughts?

I thought that the Firestones on my 99' silverado were like sliced bread...40k and they looked good for about 20k more. Then I drove across New Mexico...110 degrees outside air temp, driving on a freshly blacktopped road for about 4 hours at 95+ MPH. When I finally stopped in the mountains, my tires were all about 5-7 psi low. I thought that it was an altitude thing so I filled them up. And then again the next day...and the next day...and the next...Dealers never could find anything wrong with the tires, so I dumped them.

On my 01' rado, I traded them in with 6k on them. They were supposed to be 13/32 tread new, and these had 6, 7, 8, and 9/32 left...
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
I, too, never liked Firestones. Then my Silverado's came with Firestone Steeltex A/T's. I've driven them on all kinds of roads, from Alaskan Artic dirt roads to summer desert heat. They are wearing great, stick well and have made a believer out of me. 30K and 20K on two trucks loaded with 2000lbs, never been rotated and look like they will go 50-60K.

  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
that had the "exploding" Firestones on it. Never a problem and they looked brand new when we replaced them last yr. with about 30k miles in them.
  • hillhoundhillhound Member Posts: 537
today and I can say I'm pleased so far. The ride is smoother on the interstate and a little rougher on bumpy roads than the Firestones. The new tires are 3 ply and the stock F'stones are 2 ply so they should be more durable plus the AT tread pattern on the BFGs is much more aggressive. Sharp turns feel a litttle more stable due to the stiffer sidewalls.

I agree with you guys about the F'stones about them wearing well but the sidewalls aren't stiff enough for my liking. Then again that's not the tire's fault because they were "P" rated.

The size I got are LT 265/75R16. Here's a question. The doortag says the tire pressure should be 35 psi and the mechanic put 39-40 psi in my new tires. Do you guys think this is ok or should I let some air out??
  • hillhoundhillhound Member Posts: 537
The guy where I bought my tires said the stock wheels on my truck aren't designed to take 285s but they could "make" them fit! Did you have any problems when you had yours' mounted? I stayed with the 265s since I pull this little trailer all over the place and it barely pulls level as it is and I didn't want to have to get the speedo changed.

By the way-got the new tires black walls out and it looks good!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
no visible problems.....but long term I would have got different wheels..

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Long term? Whatcha mean tim? Honestly?

Hill the guy who installed mine didnt think they would fit at first. He came and got me. Said they looked like they wouldnt fit but he would try em. At that time i originally told them i wanted black walls till i seen them and told them i wanted the white walls out. He mounted one and it fit fine. Said he would mount other three then check for rubbing. Had me take a look and watch and they were fine. No rubbing and no rubbing to date. I have driven over a few curbs and been offroad a few times with no problems. I have over 12,000 miles on them and they are fine.

Next time i will get 255/85/R16's however just because they are slightly taller. I was hoping to get a set this spring but a new computer took me by suprise :(

When my '01 Z71 is cold and starting from a stop, it feels like the brakes are dragging and then suddenly release or as though something slips a bit in the driveline. The problem seem to go away after a few minutes. It has about 13k miles on it and the problem seems to be getting a bit worse. Anyone had a similar problem?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
they are made for wheels larger than the stock 1500....not much.....but it's the facts..

285's have been put on the even skinnier 2500 wheels..but those are not going to wear correctly long term....meaning the full life of the tires. Keep a very good eye on them with pressure and rotate them good....may be fine..

12,000 doesn't rally tell the tale....I have 42K on the Firestones and they look half gone maybe?....the best wearing truck tires I have ever had.....period...

    I would be more concerned getting he 285's on a 6.5" 2500 rim than a 1500 rim..(7")?.....tires call for 7.5" minimum....

255/85/16's would have been a better choice for both wheels..as for taller.....barely!

i just got rid of my firestone wilderness at's last week and put on some 285 bfg ko's. the firestones didnt look too bad at 45K - they still had some life left, but the thought of going thru another winter with those things on was unthinkable. the handling and traction are greatly improved with the bfgs - now just waiting for the first snow to check out the winter traction. to me, i would rather have a good perfoming tire that lasts 40k than a crappy tire that lasts 60k.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..I never really cared for Stones.....and didn't run and cry like everyone when the wilderness had problems (cuz I had steeltex)...but that's what they had on it...so be it....

the first depth of the tread isn't even gone yet...and they ride/handle very good.....have no hesitation to ride thru another snow.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
WOAH this is wierd but i agree with you on
"they are made for wheels larger than the stock 1500....not much.....but it's the facts"

As for the run away from firestones let me explain

    1. Traction was horrible in snow and rain. To much spin even with the locking rear.
    2. Uneven wear which was checked out by the dealer (tire). Kept tire pressure at 35psi all around.

I dont plan on keeping the 285's a very long time. Guess tires are like shoes to me. Ill be happy to get 30-40K on them which shouldnt be hard at all.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..to be happy with 30K is not right....haha

I see them as shoes too....hate to shop for another set...and use them until they are falling apart!

    LOL

I got what GM calls the "on./off road" tread.....has worked for me...

The "all season" looked pretty lame..

....and see grasshopper......you are coming around !...haha

Tom and Matt converted to the dark side of 2500 land...even Mike is thinking about it......maybe even you one day!

    hehe

Glad we agree on something ..

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    ...unless I got names wrong...he has a new 2500HD pal....with 255's!

wimpy?..nahh...9200 and 8600...what's the difference?....they have the same exact payload rating...still farr ahead of you!...LOL

nope...I get what I want...not to fit in....if I did that...I'd be buying tons of shoes instead of the same ones for years....dohhh!....LOL

Still got the Stang....and I should have ordered a new truck by now.....but just haven't been in the mood to sell this one yet....soon....soon...

...Looking like Carmine LT CC with gold flares and bottom custom painted right after delivery still..

    Jonah?

Ryan's wobbly front tire was probably due to the lack of sufficient torque on the lug nuts. Course the tire shop mounted it even though they DON'T use a torque wrench..............
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    OBYONE

Tire shop mounted it but i had roated the tires so they were off. Maybe the new shocks up front helped? and yes i did torque all the lug nuts. That was the problem.

    TIM

Carmine? Guess your about the hit the 40 range eh?

    haha

I know it does....as I drive by a 1500 ex.cab every day in that color combo....

Now picture a 2500HD CC...diamond plate bed skins...pop up tie downs in the stake pockets..?? for steps...with an ASC power moon roof....

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
make it gold diamond plate bed caps, some gold rims and your set

How much are you looking at the moon roof?

Thats the only thing my truck lacks i wish it came from the factory with

    2002 2500HD Ext Cab 4x4 SLE GMC Pewter/Graphite
    Duramax/Allison/Eaton Locker/255x85R16 Kelly AWR

    Love this truck ;)

We will get RYAN to come around one of these days. Sometime we will all have to meet in Northern IL, or Northern IN, since we are all close for a campout or something, after Tim gets his new ride of course ;)

Gold skins and gold rims?......can I dress like a pimp too and tote my ho's around also?

    LOL

    nahh...I like chrome/silver...

Moon roof will be a piece of cake......getting a genuine ASC from ASC here in Michigan. Bud has connections......then a place that does GM's concept cars (and all the Z71 Burbs/tahoes/extremes.6.0SS...etc) will have the guys in the back install it.....probably for a case of beer or three...

dunno the price yet....but will be wayyy less than $1100 if going to a shop...

yeah the Burbs and tahoes come with it.....why not an ado?

I would like to have a roof that was made with the rails in it for the glass to slide.....but an after thought type it's gonna have to be...

    it will be sweet

I've had Brandywine (in '88) and Red Crimson (in '92), but never a Red red. There's a metallic red on the Tahoe that is gorgeous (don't remember the name) but it doesn't seem to be a Pick-up color.
