does anybody know off hand what the difference between 265/75-16 and 265/70-16 will make on my trucks spedo? also, is anyone out there using chips or reprogramers for the 5.3 engines I'v been tossing around getting one, just looking for some feedback, positive or negative.

Obyone... I just installed a pv cat back system the other day.. sounds great and runs tons better than that gibson ever thought of.. just to follow up, gibson did send me a check for 125.00 after I bitched the owner about the lack of performance, and the vibration it caused.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Glad you're happy witht he pv. The gibson was really something else. Glad I got rid of mine. Maybe I should've complained too. However, I cut mine up into tiny pieces with a torch just for satisfaction.

The 265/75R16 or the 265/70R16 will change your speedo approximately 3% slower than you're actually going. I'm assuming you have either the 245/75R16 or 255/70R16. Not much. On my Denali, I went from the 265/70R16 Firestone to the 275/70R16 Michelin LTX. Same on my rado from the 255/70R16 to the 275/70R16. Even though I have the HPIII unit, I didn't reprogram for tire size. Figured I'd enjoy the extended warranty.

I did program for 93 octane fuel, remove the 98 mph governor, increase shift firmness and raised the rev limiter to 6k. If you can find one on ebay, that may be your best bet. I bought mine retail for $399 and not sure if I'd do it again at that price. Be careful though cause it can be used on only one truck at a time.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
wow obyone you got ripped off

I paid $279 for my HPIII
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
bought it retail Ryan!....aka local...aka on the Islands!

....so now ya want a black grill babs?....this truck isn't even going to be a GM when you are done...

    LOL

Tim the black grill has been in the works but dr cool (obyones buddy) wouldnt email me back on a few questions i had so i ordered the shocks. I figure spring time is a good time to add something new

I bought mine retail too from a local (high priced) place. I almost crapped my pants when i went to buy it and the guy behind the counter said $279.99.

I should have bought more and sold them
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Not to mention that I bought mine waaaay before you bought yours....You probably could have gotten it for around $219 to $239 with no tax on ebay. ;-)
  • csandmanncsandmann Member Posts: 8
I have the 265/75R16 on the truck right now. I picked up a set of "take offs" for winter use from a suburban. and they have 265/70R16 mounted on them. if its only 3% thats really nothing, only like 2 or 3 mph difference. on the programmer, do you like the changes it made in your truck? I think $400 is a little steep too. I have a 2002 and havent seen anything come available on e-bay yet.
  • seeligseelig Member Posts: 590
wow Ryan......you let yourself get ripped off like that?
thought you college kids were smarter than that.
don't even tell me what you are payin for the billet......
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
At $399 I'm not sure I'd do it again. At $299, it is definitely worth it. The improvements that it made to the truck are noticeable. Especially the elimination of the speed limiter, performance tuning, and shift firmness.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
$279 and i got it that day. Better deal than waiting god knows how long

I got mine last february (01)
  • seeligseelig Member Posts: 590
$399.00 isn't too bad, considering Oby's wass probably one of the first off the bench.
i've paid more than i wanted to for things before, but then again when it comes to toys, i could care less, as long as i'm happy.
there's a place out here sellin them for 225.00, but what concerns me is what Oby says, can you only use it on a '00 or '01 or both?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I'd buy it for would be to re-program the speedo for bigger tires...

    - Tim
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
This link will give you a printout showing exactly how much the speedo will be off with different size tires...

The Tahoe/Suburban front bumper looks very similar to the silverado. However, the Tahoe rear bumpers have 2 horizontal "dimples" in them for some reason. I thought they were dents at first, but it turns out they all have them...

  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
I noticed the diff. in the rears...the dent I had in mine made it match the Tahoe bumper on one side. I was tempted to put a dent in the other side but afraid I wouldn't get them the same.

    Off subject, but worthwhile.

The Art of the Motorcycle, a Guggenheim exhibit at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to tour this exhibit before it opened to the public. First, it is an art exhibit, second it is a motorcycle exhibit. The displays are fantastic, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent to display everything to the fullest extent. 30' posters on walls, 30' high curved, mirrored walls, mirrored diplays that reflect onto white walls, a chrome 'road' that runs from the basement up 20' over the main display area. The bikes range from 1870's to present vintage.

We spent 5 hours in the exhibits over a 2day period and could have spent more time there.

Ok my dad is in need of new tires before winter. He currently has some uniroyal P205/75/R14's. He wants to go a lil bigger (guess hes taking after me?). Well i was looking tonight and found some goodyear AT/S in the 225's. Anyone know for sure if they will fit? I am guessing so because the diameter is only like .4" difference

Any other tire suggestions. Need some good for snow.

    Thanks

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Are the 205/75R14's the size that came with the truck? If it is, moving to the 225 shouldn't be a problem. If its not....well....
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
A smaller footprint is better in the snow (as in a narrower tire). Jumping up to an 85 series will give him a larger diameter, and help with traction (as long as you don't increase the width). The other side of the story is the limited choices considering it is a 14" tire. I would check around, but you may end up with a passenger tire on it.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yea i know itll be P rated. He doesnt care doesnt really haul anything and definitly doesnt tow anything. Just a back and forth to work truck. My truck is used for all the hauling (menards trips) which i have another run for a few doors this weekend.

We were surfing the web last night and he seen the goodyear ATS. Really likes them (aggressive tread). The only size they make will be 225/75/R14. Only difference is they are an inch wider and about .4" taller than the stock tires

Also tirerack has em at $82 a tire :(
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
The agressive tread will help, but going to a wider tire doesn't. I didn't find much either (tried tirerack & discounttiredirect) but that doesn't mean the local tire dealers won't have something for your dad...

Wait, I got it... Sell him your truck, and upgrade to the HD CC you want. Then you could get your 255/85's and give Tim alot of grief about the light duty truck. LOL

    -Eric
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Ryan has the lightest duty truck here!....being a 1500 with all that crap on it the capacity gets less and less by the week!

    LOL

For those of you that run Mobil 1 - I usually put 5w30 in it, but I've noticed the couple times I've taken it to the dealer for a mobil1 change they put 10w30 in it. Would I be better off with 10w30, or should I stick with 5w30. I live in the Chicago area. Engine is a 99 5.3L.

    thanks,
    Mark
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    ..all year..

Being In Chicago....you get cold [non-permissible content removed] temps like I do in Michigan...and 5-30 will flow faster all year round....which it very good during those first few seconds......especially in winter when it flows slower.

    - Tim
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
For the reasons Tim stated. But, if most of your driving is longer trips, it doesn't make much difference. The only difference in the two oils is when the oil is cold. Once warmed up, they are the same 30 weight. In temps above 50 they two are about the same. At 0 the 5W will flow much easier than the 10W.

Actually, I'd be tempted to use 0W-30 in a cold winter climate, but take it easy until the oil has warmed up and you should have no problems.

northwest indiana here and i run 5w-30

Did you survive the tornados today? Had a scare tornados touched down not far from school. I sat in a stairwell for about an hr and a half today worried about my truck in the parking lot (they wouldnt let anyone leave) I parked next to a tree :(
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
went thru here too. No damage to me...but lots of damage not farr. Wife asked me to take down the scaffolding so the cars wouldn't get it if it fell. We had minimal winds. Now I have to put it back up to use it before the snow comes!..GRRRRR

...and I had 1 board left!

    GRRRRRRR

    oh well.....

    Truck wasn't a concern.....after all..it is a 2500....LOL

..(that's what insurance is for Babs)

yea i guess so but i dont want to go through the hassle.

Winds suck today (60mph) and its freezing. Cant wait for the snow tonight/tomorrow
  • mdw1000mdw1000 Member Posts: 171
just got into work and the winds are really picking up here. Didn't have any damage in Aurora that I know of, but there was some down in the Kankakee area where my folks live. Sounded like it really sucked in your neck of the woods, Ryan. Gotta stay away from those trees...

Thanks for the advice on the oil. Wonder why the dealer uses 10w30?
  • seeligseelig Member Posts: 590
rado in the garage today. suppose to be 79 degrees w/5-10 mph winds....Brrrrrr.....cold
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    79 degrees cold?

I dont mind it but these winds suck
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I know what ya mean. We're scheduled for showers, winds up to 15 mph and 85 degrees....dang this winter weather.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
obyone and seelig ill mail you guys some snow alright

Well, it never fails, I get a new truck, and there is gonna be some severe-[non-permissible content removed] weather. Last truck I had for one day before tornados rolled thru with hail. I was at an auction that time, and drove 95 to find a barn to pull into that was safe from the hail and made it. This time, I was sitting in the dorm, watching the news, getting ready to go put the truck somewhere safe for the storm coming across, and the TV and tornado sirens go off. So instead of going to the basement of the dorm, I go to my truck, I can barely walk there for the 40 mph constant winds. Get in the truck, drive to a huge gas station, and sit right in the middle where it is safe. Torrential downpours show up about 10 min after I got there, but no hail. But I felt much safer for my less than week old new truck.

    I picked up last wed.
    2500HD Ext Cab SB 4x4 Duramax/Allison/Eaton Locker
    Pewter/Graphite GMC
I love the truck and no more 1500 for me. Have 1000 miles on it so far, and have avged so far over 17, got 13 with the half ton. This truck blows my 5.3 away for acceleration and power, and milage.

I GOT A BIGGER TRUCK THAN TIM!!! HAHAHA

You all have a nice weekend, we get all of Halloween week off at Carbondale, something about all the riots that usually happen down here ;)

Almost all of your dealers and quick lubes use 10w30 because it's universally accepted. This way, they only have to stock one tank of oil. Most will put whatever you want in, but it costs more 'cuz it comes from a quart bottle instead. The chevy manual says 5w30 and if not available, then 10w30, bet NEVER 10w40. It seems to me that before the early 90's, 5w30 was considered "performance oil".
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...well I guess I HAVE to get a CC now eh!?

    haha

The first few snows always are a joke babs.....you know that....

The old Autotrac/4WD hasn't got touched since the last snow eh Ryan?

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    oh yea it has

i use autotrac at least a little during each rain to make sure it works

Good article on that million mile truck. Shame of it is, got torn down for a rebuild even though it didn't need it. Might have gone 2 million!

There is a repair shop around here called Autotek. They used to advertise they had a toyota 4 banger with 400-500K on it. Haven't seen that truck, so it may have died...(probably)

of snow.......then as I was up in the loft working.....and the wind was a blowing......there was a huge crash on the side of the garage!

was it a power line I thought?.....hold on.....the lighst are still on.....hmmmm...looked out the doors and there was a big [non-permissible content removed] tree from the neighbors partially on my fence/drive and part on the roof.....but mostly on their drive......but what was all the damn water running thru my yard?..it wasn't raining!

    hmmmmm

I know....it's the 3000 gallons from their damn pool that the tree collapsed!..dohhh.....and it's all heading down hill towards my garage doors pal!

drive was designed to keep water away from doors....but not 8 inches worth in 20 seconds....dohhhh...

Luckily a few bags of oil dry are all it takes to cure the seeping water..

    whewww..

....still windy as heck here.....and cold boss!...but I like it like that....personal and biz wise...

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
cold doesnt bother me but this wind has to go. Cant take the flying debris anymore.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...big deal!...makes it more intersting to drive!

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    Yea it does

At least i know my blue mirrors hold up well. I was coming up a bridge last night when somehting (didnt see what it was dark) richocheted off my drivers side mirror. Checked it out no chipped paint or anything. WHEW

Tim does your truck handle like crap in the wind? Maybe its just me and my wimpy 1500

I want to buy a tool box for my 2000 Silverado LT- white very nice- anyway, want some recommendations on a quality buy. I am military, not a construction worker. Just need it to keep "stuff" in. Anyone like the United Welding Service? I see a lot on work trucks. Thanks!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I like Dee Zees Products (especially the black diamond plate)

Only downside is they are expensive ($600)

Might wanna try home depot they have some nice not very expensive toolboxes

beware...as with anything....you get what you pay for....

babs....in theory...being 600 lbs lighter you should blow around more....

every vehicle is going to have the "automatic lane change" option when in high winds.....

I have no problem with rocking type effects......but when it's windy...of course you can feel it in the wheel..

not take a ride yesterday in the cube van with a 15 foot box!....that was a whole barrel of fun!

We sent you some weather the other day. Did you get it? (LOL!)
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
4 dandolions just now as I was strolling outside.
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
I've still got red and green bell peppers on the plants. They are really loving this weather...peppers must weigh over 1lb each. My habeneros have just come into bloom again, and each plant must have 100-200 peppers. It's chile time!!!
To stay on subject, how many more peppers can the 2500HD haul over the 1500?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
looks like this topic is turning into a yan can cook vs emeril battle hehe
