Check out this link. Apparently some has already posted it to edmunds....

jlflemmons "GM ENGINE KNOCK" Oct 16, 2001 9:52pm

I read the part that said..."Division Number
Deaf, Hearing Impaired, or Speech Impaired*

I don't have to tell you what came to mind....
  • 4x4man4x4man Member Posts: 222
Thanks, I totally forgot about that thread!!

Funny I was laughing at the deaf, hearing impaired number by the time I read your next comment I think we had the same thing in mind.. :-D

Doesn't give me warm fuzzies about the "This noise may be caused by an interaction between the piston and the cylinder wall"

    But wait its normal right??!!

I will be putting BG 44k into the tank at about 3/4 of a tank due to the fact it only treats about 20 gal to see if in fact the chevron article is correct about the carbon build up and the noise (cold start knock) being attributed to contact between deposits on the piston and cylinder head.

    http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/motorgas/ch6.shtml

Anybody by chance know if our new engines have 1 millimeter or less clearance between the top of the piston and the bottom of the cylinder head or know where we might be able to find specs like that on our engines??

Both cables on my tailgate just broke, while unloading a riding mower. Has this happened to any else? If so what did your dealer say? I have 45000 miles so no warranty. Thanks
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    you just overloaded it?

Dealer won't do anything for ya I'd imagine?

Did it mess up the tailgate or bumper?

I towed a car last night.

Grandmas car (88 olds cutlass) broke down and a mechanic wanted $400 to fix it. Dad told mechanic not to touch it. They wanted $75 to tow it home (like 5-10 miles) dad said nope ill come get it. So guess who was the tow truck

Hooked up a tow strap and towed the thing home. Pretty amazed how well it did. With tow haul it was great.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    LOL

I have towed and hauled...even pulled people from snowbanks.....even before tow/haul switches!...is this possible?

    LOL

..always keep the strap handy under the back seat....ya never know...

..like the punk that burried the delivery van in the snow bank last year....he comes to the door and I look around and say....uhhh...where is the truck......he hangs his head and points down the road!....dohhh...

    kids....what ya gonna do man?

    haha

I have a 2000 z71 w/ the option black wheel flares. Does any one know how these are installed? I tore one up at the deer lease and would like to order one from the dealer but try and install myself.
  • 4x4man4x4man Member Posts: 222
You da man....at least you guys knew how to work together to get the car home.
When I had my 97 half ton I had to tow my sister in laws car about 20 miles in town. Well things would've been better if it was her in the tow vehicle and not her mom. Her mom stated she knew how to stop and keep control of the tow vehicle so she hopped in, I got in my truck, got the chain tight and away we went, sort of. She would ride the brakes the whole time and then stand on the brakes at each stop light, I only needed to touch my brakes to stop (one time we stopped well short of the cross walk, I had to power my way to the intersection), she did all the stopping for both vehicles!! Needless to say after about 2 miles of this the brakes were smoking on the car and she almost rammed into the back of my truck due to the fact the brakes were over heated. I kept trying to stick my hand out to tell her to stop putting on the brakes while we were going, wonder if the international peace sign minus one finger would've woke her up sooner?? LOL
Anyway we let the brakes cool down and I made some suggestions and we finally made it to her place....

Flairs are held on around the lip by
plastic plugs. They pull right out.
The top of the flair is held on by
2 sided sticky tape..Easy to remove
just pull the plugs out..whip out your
blow drier heat up the top of flair
where the tape is and pull off GENTLY !
Very easy and NO HOLES ON THE SIDE OF
    BODY either..................Geo

dad was in my grandmas car. It was pretty close to the tailgate on mine. I couldnt see the front of her car. I need a longer strap
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
the shorter the strap, the shorter the reaction time. But that's ok. Since it was DAD's idea, and Dad drove the vehicle being towed...then Dad could pay for any damages incurred on either vehicle.

What was the saying....penny wise, pound foolish. Any contact made between the two vehicles would have resulted in a negation of the $75 saved from the towing charge by tenfold not to mention the risk of injury to either driver or innocent bystanders. I seen it happen too many times....where in the end....TWO tow trucks were needed. Seen this antic done at freeway speeds too.

Thanks for the information on the dash rattle. I will try that before tearing the entire thing apart. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Thanks again,

  • 4x4man4x4man Member Posts: 222
We were using a 20ft chain I believe, but it only takes one slow reaction.....

I can say one thing, I could see my mother in laws eyes in the mirror just about popping out of her head when she was trying to put the wo to the go with almost no brakes left!!

I can't believe poeple would do this on the highway.. I have yet to see this and surely don't doubt it, but I haven't been around in the world very long and I am sure some moron would love to give an example or two some day on the highway for the rest of us to avoid...sheezzz

On the same subject sort of. Those of you that pull stranded motorists out of a ditch on a snowy day or similar situation, do you use a strap or chain and what should the rating be? I know at least the rating of the car, but how much stress must be factored in when pulling someone out of a ditch or snow embankment? Need to get one for my truck so I don't have to worry about borrowing in laws or a situation arises.

Good luck, hopefully that will be your problem...much less to take apart to!!

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Unless its in the wilderness, where I'm not usually at, I'll let the stranded motorist use my cell phone to call a tow truck to get them out. Figure the tow truck guys get paid to take the chance and do it with a higher rated truck. Having a winch that I don't makes it even easier. BTW, did I mention that I just bought a towing company? ;-)
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Thanks for saying what I was thinking, but didn't say myself because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I have been so guilty of towing stuff with chains and straps in my younger past and now wouldn't do it on a bet. The other day I came up on two folk "towing" a car with a truck and a snatch strap at 70 mph down E-470; really, really hurt my head.

I can't remember what the rating was on mine....but it was like 14,000 lbs?...or some insane number?
It's about 30 feet...has loops on both ends and has part elastic? for a rubber band type effect to "spring" them out.

Used it a few times for cars as well as pulling out bushes/stumps.

I stick to people I know for snow banks...or the occasional mud hole. I agree.....I'll call you a truck!.....who needs the liability or whatever may happen?

I did pull an older lady out of the ditch on a nasty [non-permissible content removed] winter night with my old '88 1500....but that was the last stranger...

Was in town today and thought would just look
at the trucks. Idea was to look at Silverado
ext cabs. Still keeping my 00 Silverado Rg Cad.
Going to let a family member have the 00.

But by the end of the day had brought a
North Face Green 4x4 with Moon Roof or
    its suppose to have one.

The 0% was a major factor. First time had gone
shopping with no preparation material, not
knowing what was buying. I still don't know all
the options on the truck. Guess will find out
tomorrow when pick up. Anyone on here have one,
    how do you like it?
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Friend of mine bought a North Face w/all options, 'cept in pewter about 3 weeks or so ago. It was kinda my fault, we'd been out drinking and stopped by the (closed) Chevy dealership on the way home to look one over. He loved the damn thing even after he sobered up and went out and bought one a couple of days later. The then brand new 0% financing was a major factor for him also. Thing is, he still really, really likes it. For me, the ext cab Silverado works just fine, but if you need a real, full size, Suburban kind of back seat the Av seems to work really well.

friend of my moms owns some land and was driving his tractor down the road a guy in a small honda was stuck in a ditch. So he hooked up a rope to it. Pulled it out only thing one he got pulled out the guy in the honda didnt brake. Car went across the road down into another ditch. Guy had to pay for damages incurred cause of this idiot. Said he will never do it again

Also Obyone congrats on the new company
First thing the car would have hit would have been my reese (whatchamacallit) with the tow ball on it. So my bumper was safe

oh yeah, "tow bar", i seem to remember my dad teaching me the right way to do it. tow straps??
    HAHAHAHAHAHAAA, but then again..........
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
For anyone forced to tow (leave to the pro's whenever possible). The vehicle being towed should be initiating all braking for both vehicles, not all the braking mind you, but the strap or chain should always have tension on it. This prevents the jerking motion and causes less wear and tear on the tow vehicle.

Also when yanking out someone who is stuck, the best bet is to have some heavy blankets or something similar draped over the strap/chain. There is nothing worse than some flying debris from a broken chain or a rusted bumper (whenever possible loop around frame or crossmember - down low!!!)

Don't want to see anyone get hurt this winter.

is temporarily on towing. I was driving my '83 Shelby Charger in Nothern Michigan one winter looking for Boyne Highands to go skiing. I missed my turn on the main road and started back through back roads. Turn left, turn right, turn left. The roads had been plowed, but were still packed snow. The plows had raised up high walls, though, so you couldn't see much. I turned a corner and found I was already started down a steep little hill that went down to a T (on packed snow). Ziiip right down to the faaar snow bank. I had to go out the window to get help. Lucky the snow bank kept me off the pasture beyond (and below). A guy at a farm house watched the whole thing and pulled me out with his tractor. He wouldn't take a dime, either.

On a more topical note, my 2500 HD came in yesterday and I picked it up today. It's an LS CC 4WD, 6.0. Very nice. Gotta get nerfs, though. I haven't got out of a vehicle this high since I had a parachute on.

Driving South on I-85 in North Carolina two weeks ago. I was doing 72mph with cruise set in right lane. Looked left as I was being passed by a rusted out early '70's Ford P/U. Tied to his bumper mounted tow ball was a heavy hemp rope. Rope was threaded through a 4 foot piece of what looked like 4" cast iron pipe. The other end of the 8 feet of rope was tied to a Chevy Chevette with a very "white" young woman with BIG eyes. Talk about idiots....

Yes she was....an 87? Caprice Classic?....or some kind of old person car?....haha

Farmers have done more than their share of towing out them "city idiots"...like me one time!

Was going to the hunting blind one morning....decided to cross a field I don't normally do. Turned out to be super wet and muddy, along with the clay making it greasy. Next thing ya know I can't see the tires almost and the sound of the rockers scraping the ground makes me decide to go hunting and worry later. I walked to the blind..shook my head a few....shot a 6 point...and went back to the truck in now daylight. The farmer next door had seen me coming out of the woods finally and met me at the truck with is tractor and a chain. We didn't even exchange the "need a tow?...".."sure!"...as we both knew what to do...
Yanked me out....went on my way. And yes..he wouldn't take a dime. Although I did drop him off some Venison sticks later in the season. He smiled.

I still remember that truck being about a foot lower on all four corners....wish I had a camera!

    Oh well...

    Enjoy

Looking to buy a '02 1500 LT ext cab Z71 (but looking at the HD crews). I have a couple of questions, if they have been covered maybe someone can tell me how to do a search. ?

Does anyone have the Composite box and is a pro or con. I drove a '01 Z71 and the traction in the rear wasn't great- the only other drawback was the acceleration, it seemed sluggish. Would the lighter box in back make traction that much worse?

How does the 1500 HD Crew compare in these two areas?

Also, I read about Chevy introducing a four wheel steering system (Quadrasteer) on later 2002 "select" models. Does anyone have any experience with this and would it be worth waiting for?

Thanks for any help. This forum has been a big help already.

dredging our boat dock. Cousin jumped off ( i was in the dock with the large bucket putting it in the mud and hooking it up to the tractor) darn thing rolled backwards and flipped upside down in the dock. used an 83 S-10 and a garden hose to pull it out

Also got it running again that same day!!

Trans went out a yr later now its garbage (this all happened about 4-5 yrs ago)

I once mistakenly drove my 96 Ford POS down an unmarked "No Maintenance" road in Kansas after a rain storm. After about 100 yards, the road was turning progressively worse, and I was loosing traction. I knew that I couldn't stop or turn around, for fear of getting stuck, so I kept pushing on, hoping to make it about 300 more yards to the blacktop. Needless to say, the truck eventually stopped, as it had become high centered on a perfectly flat road. Took 4 days for the weather to dry the road up enough for the tow truck guy to even drive out there...and then he had to dig a hole to gain access to something to hook onto....

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    if you provide the Venison ....it's $4.00 a lb...in 2 Lb bags...aka $8 a sitting....errrr.bag!

To just walk in and buy them is $18 a bag....$9.00 a lb.

Good stuff though.....Mike had at least 2 while Daryl and I munched them down!

I saved one bag for when Mike was here....have to wait until I shoot more deer in a few weeks.

Between the basic cut...hot stix...Bratwurst...Italian Sausage...Summer sausage...and a smoked hind or two...(comes out like Arbys roast beef!)...I can spend $300-$400 on just processing that "FREE" deer!

    LOL

Years ago we bought a 68 Chev Biscane that came with the 427 Police Special. Only problem was some one had pulled the motor so we pulled it with a tow strap down the high way, Police speedo went to 140 I won't guess how fast we were going but not one person passed us on the way back to town about 35 miles all together. I have put in about 200 miles being pulled behind some one on a strap and as long as you both can work together and understand each other it is no problem/
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...but there is still the unplanned panic stop that can do ya in!

depending on the time of day/night would depend on how fast I went.

I agree the person being towed should initiate the stopping to keep tension on the strap/chain.

With todays tow straps....I don't think a chain should be used at all...

I guess you can get away with that often enough, but keep it up and eventually I figure you'll end up as venison jerky. Just hope you don't take one of us out with that kind of stupid behavior.

I forgot to add the best part with no big block in it and those strong front springs I looked like I was riding in a boat on the ocean. It made me so sick I tossed my cookies when we got back home. I might be a little off center in some of my thinking and actions but I will always stick by the old saying. Ban low performance driving not High performance cars.

My truck (99 Z-71 LT X-cab) came from the factory with P 265 75 16 Firestone Wilderness AT tires.

I was at Sam's yesterday and priced out some LT 265 75 16 Michelin LTX AT's -load range C.

Why is the rated capacity of the load range C tires less than the P rated tire. 2,470 at 50 psi VS 2,601 at 44 psi.

I expected a truck tire rated to 50 psi would have a higher rating that a passanger car tire rated to 44 psi max.

    Anyone know anything about this?
