    Mark,

Thanks for the cut and paste!! I have copied that to a text file so I can have it in my truck. My truck didn't make the rattling until it started to get cold outside also. I am going to try this tomorrow and if all goes well I can see what might be making the noise. It sounds metallic and only happens when I hit a bump (read: pothole, Colorado is famous for these...), so I figure it is not the plastic panels rubbing together but some metal brakets or something coming in contact.
I don't have a digital camera so I can't post pics of the tear down...hmmmm, wonder if one of my neighbors would let me borrow theirs again...hold that thought, may have some pics by Monday...

    Thanks again,
    Bob

Only a 3 lb sledge in the Tindra?? Oh that's right if it were a full size pickup you could use a real sledge!!!

    BWAAHAHAHAHAHAA

With the great display of patriotism lately I saw something yesterday that struck me as a little funny. A Tundra with an American flag proudly displayed on it.

    --------------------------------------------------

    Bob,

Sounds like the exact same noise that I am getting, potholes are quite abundant here in New Hampshire too. I am probably going to do mine next week sometime. Good luck with yours.

Does any one know how to locate a dealer by their number? I'm trying to find out where dealer # 18072 is located.

    Thanks

  • mikeb31mikeb31 Member Posts: 25
you don't want to chrome them?
  • dch0300dch0300 Member Posts: 472
I've seen chrome differential covers, but never chrome shocks.
He might start a new fashion trend for trucks if he did that.
  • seeligseelig Member Posts: 590
he'll paint em alright.........can you imagine having YELLOW shocks on a blue truck with matching mirrors?.........j/k babs
  • erikf2erikf2 Member Posts: 100
Yeah, but will he paint 'em BLUE to match the mirrors, or BLACK to match the fender flares? ;-)
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
I agree about yellow with the blue truck; how about black with clearcoat?

My '99 (Classic) was indigo blue w/ yellow shocks - the old bodystyle had bilsteins...

Ryan, did they come with boots?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    yea light blue boots

well considering the red really didnt go with the truck yellow might be an improvement

Any suggestions start with front or rear?
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Start with the front, as the rears will be easier (more room). Spray the nuts down with some CRC then have a cup of jo, then go to work... Or if you are a early riser, have a cup of cheer instead. LOL
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yea ill be up early. Gonna give my old shocks 1 more workout and run some extra bags of concrete back to menards then come home and work on em

Then take the trip to the old workplace... It will make it that much easier to remove the bolts. I am guessing you are planning on reusing them, right? When ready to remove, take a wire brush to the threads to clean them and remove all the rust.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
don't come with their own nuts?
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Ryan has enough of his own... He is a MAN now...

Sorry, Ryan, too easy to pick on you.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    ....all about some dumb shocks!!?

come on Ryan....paint them pink like you really want to......don't let these guys change your true feelings!

    .....Enjoy

    it's interesting to us ok?
besides, he'll need us at one point or another on this issue, and we ain't gonna abandon the kid in his moment..........not only that, we want to make sure he puts the front shocks on the front and so on.......
good luck on this one now!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
make sure he gets the left on the left and right on the right too!

What would he do without yawl?..LOL
(probably have more money due to not hearing people say they bought X and then he wants them!)

    LOL

    ...Like 255's....and shocks...haha

Hey guys...my new doors came in!....and I'm going to paint them too!!

I was just wondering, if i disconnect the battery for about a half an hour will it delete the computer codes I recently had updated. I had it updated for bigger tires and they did some other code update. Any help will greatly be appreciated.

I have two kids (4 and 2 years old) and will probably have another. The vehicle I buy will be a daily driver for just me, but will be used for lots of family outings like camping. I don't tow anything, but a camping trailer of some sort could happen in the future. My question is regarding the Chevy Silvarado 1500 extended cab. How well do kids actually fit in the back? What is the comfort level really? I am a big guy so I usually have my seat all the way back. Will there be enough room back there for three kids on long drives? Is there three head rests in the back or two? Is the center belt a shoulder/three point or just a lap belt? The truck seems ideal since it can hold more stuff than an SUV and would make a better daily driver for me, but I'm worried about the kids in the back as far as room and safety.
    Thanks,
    Steve
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
It is fairly large, not a crew cab mind you, but of all the manufactures out there, GM has the largest extended cab. The leg room will be tight with the seat all the way back, but that goes for all brands. There are two head rests, and the center seat belt is a lap belt.

Why don't you make it a family outing, take the kids for a test drive with you, & see what kind of room they have. Let them be the judge. Then for arguements sake, try a different truck. On the other side of the story, the Tundra seems to have the smallest back seat. If you try that first, it will make the GM seem like a van in comparison.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i ride with the seat all the way back. I have had 3 young cousins ride in the back fo my truck on a trip (they are 9 to 10 years old) and they were comfortable. Never heard any complaints.

On the downside my bro is 15 and this past weekend me my dad and I took a fishing trip. My dad couldnt ride with the seat all the way back because he was a little cramped.

Aren't the blue part of the shocks (boot), suppose to be on the bottom? Or do these shocks even come with boots? Sure don't look like it. What's up with that? Surely they don't sell aftermarket shocks with no boots? Especially ones advertised as PREMIUM.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yea the boots go on the bottom. Guess i have em on upside down?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    according to babs:

    Pros

    Thusfar are

    1. almost no nose dive when braking
    2. seems stiffer
    3. seems like a truck and not a car
    4. not as soft and floaty

but but but I thought the old 1500 rode fine man?..sure don't sound like it pal!..all this time it's been a car ride.?>.......gotta get you a 2500 pal...

Good luck on this one now!

bet you're happy to get off the factory PoGo sticks eh?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
having the tennecos in one hand and the bilsteins in the other you could tell the quality difference. Also one of the tennecos had a real deep scratch. Didnt really check it out to much but it looked like it was close to being punctured. Also on the rears at the bottom of the shock (very bottom) it looked like there was slight cracking. When i get some time im gonna give em a good look over

Congratulations and thanks for all the info on the Bilsteins. Just what I've been waiting for. Now if Bilstein will just come up with a model for 2500HD.

did you try the spare today, or are you still having a problem with the truck pulling to the right?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
put the spare on and am driving with it. Mainly i am having trouble on one stretch of highway. Ill let you know tuesday if its totally fixed

Also found a chunk of metal in the tire i took off. Its not losing air. One tough tire i must say
  • morin2morin2 Member Posts: 399
Not only do kids (9 and 13) like the rear seat, but they have no trouble climbing in, which was my only worry with my Z-71. They jump in there easier than I can. No nerf bars on mine. Your kids are much younger - I second the advice to try them. Kids like trucks.
  • stobarstobar Member Posts: 110
Steve, I have the '01 2WD Ext. Cab 5.3. I also have two kids; 8 & 10. They have been on 10 hour rides in the back seat and not one complaint. I also had two adults back there for a 2 hour drive and they both said they thought it was comfortable. I traded in my '97 2WD Ext. Cab and there was quite a difference. Much more cabin room in the new design, front and back.

floor (tunnel) and the heater box hanging down, the passenger foot room could actually be better than it is. Been that way for too long now. Matter of fact I think since the '88 re-design.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I'm in the drivers seat....who cares!!?

    LOL

no doubt back seat is very comfy....had kids and adults back there.....no sqawks...

Do you have access to look up the following TSB: 01-06-01-022??

It is in regards to the 6.0L cold start knock and was curious what it talks about.
    Thanks,

This 0.0% deal from GM rulz! Checked around locally and none of the 5 dealers here have anything 2001 to choose from. Got bummed, so I tried Gergia, and found Bill Heard in Union City. They have over 50 in just the 1500 series. This may be the time to buy!!!!

I think I fixed the dash rattle last night!! I was able to borrow my neighbors camera and tore the dash assembly down last night. Hopefully I will be able to get this pictures downloaded from the camera tonight.
Try this first before you tear everything down...
Take out the right and right center vents. I ended up using a small screw driver to lightly pry it forward so I could grab it to pull it out. If you look through the hole where the vent used to be you will see the white tab where the oh $hit handle goes through. Push on the tab and pull one side out slightly then do the other side, then you can pull the whole thing out. All that will be left is the metal sleeve that the handle pins go through. Jiggle those around, mine made a similar noise to what I was hearing. I used some rtv to make sure there was no metal to metal contact coming from it anymore, kinda like an insulator. I didn't hear anything this morning, but it was a bit warmer this morning at about 45 deg at 5:30am.

Anyway GM seems to have done a lot of insulating for noise under the dash there was a lot of foam around everything and the only thing that made noise when I started tapping on what was left of the dash area were the sleeves the oh $hit handle mounts through.
Hope this helps and I will let you know once I have the pics.

    Bob
