Does anyone know of any other good automotive message boards out there where I can get more Liberty commentary? Want to get as much info/opinions as possible.

I was at lost for awhile as to what SUV I wanted to replace my grand cheokee (had 2 since96). My wife liked the look of the Liberty, but I wasn't sure of the ride as a daily driver. I test drove 1 and liked the ride and handling. A test drive is far different then living with a car for long time. I was able to get 1 for a weekend and sure enough I was won over. I picked a Limited with some options (no moon roof) and I haven't regretted it. Better handling then the Ford Escape and better looking too.

I'm in CT & looking to buy a Limited....
    What are people paying elsewhere??
There's a dealer here offering $199 over invoice..
    Is this a deal???
Would appreciate any feedback - I can't wait to get behind the wheel!!!!

Yada, I paid invoice for mine in Des Moines, Ia. The mark up is only about 7%, so don't expect a huge savings. I've got 2500 mile on mine and realy like it. The build quality is just as good if not better than the Honda's and Toyota's I have owned in the past. I hope the reliability is as good.

Chevy owner here that has waited an entire year to upgrade to something new. Im moving from a tough little 2dr Tracker.

Im considering purchasing a Jeep Liberty but also considering the Saturn Vue as well.

The only thing that bothers me now about the Liberty is its poor fuel mileage. Coming from a 4 banger with 95 horses and an outstanding mileage estimate gives me a lot to think about.

Other than that, I love everything I have read about the Liberty and seen at the auto show and am just about ready to join the Jeep family.

The new Saturn Vue on the other hand reminds me of the reason why I purchased my Tracker over the RAV4 and CRV when those were rated much better than my Tracker.

Unlike the CRV & RAV4 my Tracker is a real truck and thats why I bought it.

I now see the same thing between the Liberty and the Vue. The Vue was built to cater to soccer moms and dads and people that most likely wont use it to have any real fun.

To prove it, all you need do is compare the two just a little.

For instance the Liberty comes with an option of automatic or manual transmissions and the Vue only offers it with the smaller engine. The Liberty is a Jeep (and that speaks for itself because Jeep does not make cars). Im not sure what platform the Vue is built on.

Ill admit that there is a lot I like about the Vue. But, just as it did with my Tracker, the need for a tough vehicle that could take me camping and hiking and not fall apart on a rocky trail seems to be winning out.

Anywho, I make my purchase in Sept so I still have time to think about it. Oh, and I cant wait to be able to attend my first Camp Jeep.

Man I think I have already made my decision. But just to keep me thinking Liberty maybe you guys should remind me why its better than the Vue.

    Be well all. :-)

The difference is a truck or a crossover vehicle.
I have a 2000 Tracker 4 door 4 cylinder and a Liberty with 5000 miles on it. The tracker on the Interstate (70 mph) uses the same amount of fuel as the Jeep. The difference in comfort and drive ability is like night and day. As you probably know the Tracker keeps you busy in a crosswind which is hardly noticeable in the Liberty. All I know about the Vue is what I have read in the magazines,I think the two are totally different vehicles.
  • npgmbrnpgmbr Member Posts: 248
Thanks for the comments. However, I was IN NO WAY attempting to compare my Tracker with the Liberty.

I did say that "coming from a 4 banger with 95 horses and an outstanding mileage gives me a lot to think about".

I compared my Tracker to the CRV & RAV4.

My main issue is with the fuel economy of the Liberty vs. the Saturn Vue. There lies my dilemma.

However Im irritated with some things that other manufacturers do which ultimately steers me toward Jeep.

I looked at both the VUE and the Liberty and choose the Liberty. And I am a big lover of Saturns.

I have 2 Saturns (1992 SC & 1994 SL2) which were bought new and which my kids are now driving. Both have over 100,000 miles on them and are still going strong. I waited until the VUE was out to make my decision on which vehicle to get.

There are things about the VUE that I liked and things about the Liberty, but the main thing was how it felt to drive the two. The VUE looks cheap on the inside, whereas the Liberty Sport that I have looks nicer and less plastic. The Liberty also seemed more like a truck than a mini-van to me. (For me this is a good thing - I want something that I can use for hauling and towing.)

And the Liberty ended up costing less than the VUE and that is including the warranty.

    Just my 2 cents...
  • npgmbrnpgmbr Member Posts: 248
Yes I know what you mean exactly. Im very much leaning towards the Liberty but I just want to make sure I get what I really want. lol

Another thing. The Jeep is a truck, the Vue is not.

And when I added up all the options that I wanted no the Vue it ended up costing 2k more than it would cost with the same options on the the Liberty.

    Thanks Cheryl

Any other current owners wanna push me more towards the Liberty? lol I think you'd only need to blow at this point. :-)

"The VUE looks cheap on the inside, whereas the Liberty Sport that I have looks nicer and less plastic."

Of course, Saturns are plastic on the OUTSIDE also.

The Liberty only has about a 300 mile driving range. Anybody know if it is possible to replace gas tank with a larger after market tank?
It would be nice to get an extra 100 miles before filling up.

The dealer in Ann Arbor knows nothing about a diesel. He make several calls for me and could only find out that they are being tested in Europe. Apparently it is quite common to test new ideas in Europe but many times it stops there. Any new info. on this would be appreciated.
  • snow8snow8 Member Posts: 8
It is in sales in Europe.
The diesel used is Italian made as mentioned before, and used before in Grand Voyager.
    Well tested.
New 2002 Grand CHEROKEE will have a diesel from Mercedes Benz, 2.7Common Rail.
Jeep owner from New Zealand has mentioned later this year this MB Diesel could be found from European Liberty (Cherokee) also.
This is not sure, I think 2,5 CRD will remain some time---

But more spec, check www.jeep.com, and go for example worldwide and check Great Britain (England) pages.

happy owner of Silver Limited 2.5 CRD

Thanks very much for the information. If I can get a reliable diesel I will wait before purchasing-or at least learn as much as I can about them to make an intelligent decision.
  • martin44martin44 Member Posts: 25
I presume you bought your diesel Limited overseas and had it shipped to U.S. Could you please give some particulars of the diesel-mpg, driving range, etc. The 2.5 litre diesel is offered as an option in England.I found this out by looking up jeep.com as you suggested.
  • jrdwyerjrdwyer Member Posts: 168
If you convert the fuel milage figures for the Jeep Liberty 2.5 Diesel from Jeep's UK web site to US units, you get 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. This assumes that the UK test and the EPA test are similar, which they probably are.

So that sounds great for such a heavy and capable vehicle as the Liberty. Of course, the engine would have to be reliable in both hot and cold climates and not command much of a premium over the regular gasoline engine to make it worthwhile. Buyers such as myself wouldn't mind giving up some 0-60 speed for great low end grunt and lower fuel costs. Hey, it's not a sports car.

Unfortunately, limited production models in the US market typically cost more and are in short supply. Not good for the buyer.

Maybe this proposed rise in the EPA minimum milage figures will get the car companies off their butts and give us consumers more efficient options for all types of vehicles on the road.

    A few basic questions:

    1. If the 4WD in a Liberty (with Command-Trac) is not engaged does it operate FWD or RWD?

    2. If operating in 4WD on wet or slippery roads and the road conditions improve to damp or dry and 4WD remains engaged does damage occur? ........ how soon? ......are there any warnings to get out of 4WD?

    3. Is there any easy way to determine when to use or not use 4WD short of experience and / or a damaged vehicle?

I would appreciate any guidance you may offer.
  • martin44martin44 Member Posts: 25
Thanks for the info. I feel as you do; I'll take the torque and better mpg over quickness off the line. Also would increase driving range to over 400 miles.
  • snow8snow8 Member Posts: 8
To Martin44, I live in Italy, and bought the Limited from the local dealer. I heard that all these vehicles are produced in Toledo, and equipped with VM Italien Diesel. They said a bigger displacement diesel with Autotranny and Selecttrac might be available later about 2004.
Driving range can be up to 400+miles depending the speed. 88 mph highway takes you long ways.
Also the environmental issues with CO2 values are quite minimal.
The diesel fuel cost here 0.870 Euros => $ 0.756 per liter => 0.2642 gallons.
It is ok with serpentine roads here, it heats inside faster than other big diesels I have experienced. Ok I think, even I have to say V8 would be nice in any case....
  • binkabinka Member Posts: 12
the liberty operates in rwd when 4wd is disengaged your owners manual will tell you that you may operate in full time 4wd as long as you desire (hence the term "full time") without any damage to the vechicle. part time 4wd means just that, only to be used part time on slippery surfaces or loose sand and gravel probably more of an off road situation. for further clarification go to jeepsunlimited.coms liberty forum and go to FAQ.

I few months ago I saw an article or some type of mention of Diamler Chrysler possibly offering a hybrid version of the Liberty. Has anyone else heard anything about this.

I have been trying to find info on it but have not been very successful.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
All I've seen recently is a teaser saying that Chrysler plans to put hybrid "trucks" on sale in 2004.

I thought you meant like an Avalanche/Ford Explorer Sport Track type of thing.

Who wants an electric car out in the woods where there are no outlets?

    ROTFLMAO!!!!
  • martin44martin44 Member Posts: 25
I forget that this actually is the world wide web and is accessed by people everywhere. Perhaps Chrysler/Benz will export a diesel soon. I believe there are a lot of people like me who would buy one. Actually, I suppose the mgt. of all the auto. companies must check out what people are saying about their cars on Edmunds and other sites. Are you reading this Chrysler?

    hey mjpinmd,

i think ive got the same problem as yours. Am hearing some humming coming from the rear of the car. Not sure if its related with having a full tank of gas but the sound seems unusual.

    any update about this?
  • cdkelly23cdkelly23 Member Posts: 52
Thank God we've finally got past the diesel chatter. Never understood why anyone would want a diesel engine.
  • vin_weaselvin_weasel Member Posts: 237
Maybe the increased power AND gas mileage?
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    good pun!

Actually, good mileage, good torque, and low maintenance are all great reasons for running a diesel. That, and you can run off home heating fuel if you feel a little risque!
  • mjpinmdmjpinmd Member Posts: 9
No, I have not gotten any news or updates on this. The truck runs fine, maybe it is normal. Let me know if you learn anything....
  • martin44martin44 Member Posts: 25
Don't forger a diesel engine will last 300,000 miles or more. Also the new ones don't chatter anymore (at least not much) and they are quite clean emissions wise.
  • npgmbrnpgmbr Member Posts: 248
"Who wants an electric car out in the woods where there are no outlets?"
    ROTFLMAO!!!!

Probably the same person that wants a gas powered car out in the woods where there are no gas stations.

Bought my liberty last aug2001, ABS wasnt available then. Can it be installed now?
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Yeah, but you can carry Gerry jugs with more gas.

What happens when you submerge an electric car?
  • cdkelly23cdkelly23 Member Posts: 52
Yes, you can have ABS brakes installed now. That's the good news.

The bad news is it would be extremely expensive. I believe I was quoted at $6,000 to have them installed.

This would represent nearly 1/4 of the total price of the Liberty to begin with.

I swear by ABS brakes. But, I know I couldn't afford to pay this kind of money to have them installed aftermarket.

Not sure why Jeep and other makers don't make ABS standard equipment. I believe the government will require them at some point.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Some people don't like or want ABS?
  • dielectric7bbdielectric7bb Member Posts: 324
actually when you submerge an electric car...nothing happens. Electric motors can, and do, run underwater. So do batteries. No snorkel needed :)
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    :-)
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I wonder if they make a snorkle for the Liberty yet.

    Anyone know?

I am new to this message board. I have been reading all the interesting posts about the Liberty. I recently purchased a Liberty Limited and so far I have 2500 miles and it runs great. I got rid of a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo that I had nothing but problems with.

Has anybody been to one of these Jeep Jamborees? There is one in northern Idaho end of August, about 9 hours from me in Seattle. It is expensive though, $450 for the two of us. Is it worth it? It looks like it would be fun, and it is for Jeeps only. Anybody ever go to the Silver Valley, Idaho Jamboree? This will be the 10th year of it. Thanks for the comments.

    BTW, here's the link:

Hello, I am in the process of buying a Jeep Liberty. I currently own a Jeep Wrangler ('87). I never had the heart to part with it until I saw the Liberty. I personally prefer a 5 sp manual transmission but it isn't available on the Limited Edition, which appeals to me more in appearance. Could anyone tell me how it drives with an automatic transmission? Any hesitations between gears or sticking in one gear? Or any other problems in for that matter? Thanks, once a jeepster always a jeepster.
  • bjfrank42bjfrank42 Member Posts: 51
The Liberty is my first Jeep and I notice no problems with shifting. I have the 6 cyl and I can't seem to control jack rabbit starts. More power than I'm used to. (I drive an Aerostar van most the time). Go test drive one and see for yourself, that's the best way.
  • mad0865mad0865 Member Posts: 176
Haven't experienced any gear sticking, drives smooth, with tons of power.
