A friend is considering a 1995 XJ6 in really good condition with around 55k miles. Color: He describes it as "aqua"(blue-green)? This doesn't compute with me but maybe there was a color like that ? Ideas? Is it a good buy at $15k ?
(By the way, when did the body style change?)
Any special problems with the '95 to look out for?
The Amber warning light indicates a problem that is not critical but should be brought to the attention of the service dept as soon as possible. The car should not be driven for a long period of time, but you can drive home and drive the car in to the dealer.
The red light indicates a critical problem that prevents the safe operation of the vehicle. If the red light comes on you should pull over and either fix the problem or have the car towed to a dealer. (call 1-800-4JAGUAR if you are still under warrenty)
I too noticed the amber warning light come on a couple of times in my 01 XJ8. When that happened the power seemed to go out. I spoke to my service dept. about it when I took the car in for its 10k maintenance. The technician said that it was indeed connected to the traction control. He said that when the wheels spin the traction control does indeed reduce power to control the traction loss, however, if this happens when there is no slippage, then the "throttle" needs to be cleaned. While I'm not sure exactly what "throttle" he's talking about, at least he seemed to have an answer. I pick up the car tomorrow and will see how it goes. BTW, the amber light/power reduction thing has only happened twice in 9800 miles and then it was very brief. Other than that, the car has been superb (as it should be). I hope I remembered what he told me well enough to lend some insight to this. Best regards.
I remember seeing a 96 VDP in Turquoise at the auction in PA back in Feb 99 or so. Car had like 26K miles... beautiful condition. At the time a $30-31K car if a nice color.
Sold for like $25K! And the dealer who bought it in St Louis still had it almost a year later (They had put a set of wires on it and were asking like $41,995)
Thanks, guys. This color "aquamarine" / "turquoise" / "blue green" / or whatever is a real puzzler. I have not seen the car my friend asked about, but he was really not able to define the color. My guess, thanks to you, is that it is one of the above. And hearing about your aquaitance with it, Bill, I am not sure I want to see it, either !
Anyway, thanks for the notes, I will pass them along. Christchurch
Is it normal on an XJ8 for the brake pedal to "click" when you step on it?
I brought it in to my dealer. Thought it was a spring or something. They replaced the brake switch but driving it home, it still "clicked" when stepped on.
Just wondering if this is the way they're supposed to be. I didn't remember it doing this before when I was driving it. Realized it after I picked it up from the dealer the last time.
As someone once said, "Turn on the radio and you won't hear anything annoying".
Speaking of annoying, the main reason I brought the car in was for them to repair small hairline cracks on the drivers door handle wood. They removed the wood and sent it out to be refinished. Waited 8 weeks. Picked up the car tonight and I swear that it isn't my wood piece. The color is "brown" and the burl is small and tight, very different. My burled walnut had large burls and a lot of blond in it. This piece doesn't match any of the wood trim. Asked to speak to the service manager, but of course they were all in meetings! The service dept was closing and my guy had already left for the evening.
Guess I'll deal with it tomorrow. He had told me they were repairing my wood piece, not replacing it!
I don't know if I'm being too anal about this car or what. I think "It's just a car and you're lucky to own a jag." Then I think "If they're going to do something, they should do it right."
If I had known it wouldn't match, I would have lived with the hairline cracks. The reason I had it replaced was because it was still under warranty and didn't cost anything. I guess you get what you pay for!
It "clicks" whenever you first step on the brake and then take your foot off, in park and while driving. Sounds like a spring is the best way I can describe it.
Bill, I beleive what you're refering to is called a transmission interlock. My grandma's Bonneville clicks as you put your foot on the brake when the car is in park, and if you're hand is on the shifter, you can feel something move inside. Of course, some things that are entirely acceptable in a GM are very much out of character for a Jaguar :-)
I've not seen Aqua colored XJ's. I have seen an Aqua XK8 and I sold an Aqua colored XJS that the customer then defiled with the biggest, ugliest gold leaper I've ever seen.
My Jaguar doesn't do it, however, I had a Pontiac that did click when I stepped on the brake. At first I thought something was breaking but continued to make that sound till she died a couple years later. It never affected the brakes or the mechanics of the car, just irritating.
lesliejoy, there are some things on earth that deserve some fastidious (i.e., anal) attention -- matching wood is one of them. I wouldn't be willing to put up with that anymore than I would a seat repair that involved a new hide that didn't match.
The problem is, what to do. Dollars to donuts (old saying; I have no idea what it means), they've thrown away the original wood piece -- but I'd want them to try Real Hard to find a matching piece.
After all, if you tell someone you have a Jaguar, one of the first things they think of is wood and leather. You're not being anal, they're being sloppy and if you didn't care about that sort of exact match, you may well have bought a Taurus and saved a few bux. (or at least tell them that!)
Sorry to get all fired up, but that sort of thing busts my squash (another one I don't understand).
This is sort of off-topic and, although I read here every day and I'm committed to getting an XJ when my current lease runs out, I've recently developed a much more dangerous itch. And I feel myself getting ready to scratch it.
I'm by no means a wealthy man, but I really, really want an XKE, a coupe, six or V12.
Do any of you have any awful experiences to share, or sources of sufficient terror to stop me?
You're right if you're guessing I still have a big grin on my face from the last time I rode in one. It's as bad as a crush I had in eighth grade for Rosalyn Gabbert who was a highschool cheerleader. The fantasies were vivid and I nearly went into cardiac arrest when she bumped into me in the pizza shop. Clearly, if I DO go shopping, I'll need to take someone along whose mouth won't go dry and whose deodorant won't break down at the sight. Whaddya think?
I haven't been on the page for a while...is your car under warranty? From my experience, it seems like such a waste of good trim, but all 4 panels need to be replaced to assure matching grain. Any Jag service center worth it's salt should at least inform you of that. According to my service tech the cost is $1300.00. If your car is under warranty, push for the full 4 panel replacement. As far as the "anal" part goes, when it comes to a Jaguar...."anality" is just good thinking. If you get too much more "9 to 5" mentality from this dealer, you might consider calling Jaguar US and see if you can get some relief. I always find it difficult to believe how "service" gets thrown out of the "service center" equation.
Jaguar use Madeira Concepts in Santa Barbara,Ca for wood repairs. This is a great company and they can refinish a piece to better than new. Obviously you got someone else wood piece. Ask you service manager for a copy of the paperwork that NEED to go with every piece to Madeira Concepts. Waiting 8 weeks is BS. Turn over time WITH shipping is between 1 to 2 weeks. Often time replacing the 4 door pieces is not the answer because now, they will not match, especially in color, the dash piece. If you need more help you can E-mail me. Luc.
Thanks for the information. The parts dept is checking with California and I should hear something this week. I thought 8 weeks was a little too long to wait. I'll keep you posted when I get an answer - hopefully one I want to hear!
You were supposed to talk me out of the XKE. Now I find out that Bill has one. Groan. Well, I may as well adopt the happy smirk of the damned, hell bent on living out the sin.
Serially, thanks for the confirmation of a Series I selection, Bill. Over the years (and there have been "several") I've done enough eavesdropping and reading and gone to enough concours to come to the same decision. But you forgot to mention those wonderful toggle switches!
lesliejoy, it sounds like you're headed in a better direction now. "Out of the woods," as it were ... ; ] Let us know.
how fast can the jaguar xj6 go. can it go 120 or 140. how fast can it go 0 to 60. i got a good deal on a 1994 jaguar xj6. for $14.000 is it a good deal. if so email me or post it. my email is warzonectx@yahoo.com
14k for a 1994 sounds good. How many miles? I just looked at one, 1994 xj6VDP, black with 72k miles. I started it up and the whole thing was bobbing back and forth, ???? I wonder what that is? The dealer wanted $17,900. YIKES !!!!
Not to mention the leather was pretty beat. But I liked it. So if I can get to the bottom of the shaking, the price, and the new tires it needs, what else should I look for? What kind of trouble is there with the 94's?
The dealer said he bought the car from the original owner. I'll have to get the VIN #.
He also has a 1995 sort of BRG 66k miles, he wants just over 15k for that. That one was bouncing all over the Big Apple though.
So I have a choice, and neither is also an option.
96 for $15K? Heck, you're talking an 80+K mile car. Easily. And not a real nice one either.
95? 65-70K miles ought to be doable... Prices for the 95-97s have settled a bit. If you were looking at a 98 I'd wait till sept or so. Prices usually fall then..
95=96 Except that a 96 does not have a passenger side keyhole!
If you like BRG you are in luck, its' probably the cheapest color. I recently picked up a couple of 95s. One was a PERFECT White one with 40K miles. For that I paid $17,500 at the auction. The other was a Kingfisher Blue one with 75K on it. Nice car, both had sunroofs (not all 95s have em). That one cost me $13,500.
Mileage and color make a HUGE difference in price/value on a Jaguar. An as-new, super low mile one will break the bank. White, Topaz and Silver also break the bank. BRG, Kingfisher Blue, Black are generally cheap...
(I've wholesaled a ton of Jags this month... for the rest of you all, considering 98-99s... 99s are starting to crash, but the big slam is gonna come this month and October...)
Being a young middle aged woman and just bought my first Jag I feel I can fill in some things. I am not at all knowledgable regarding car prices etc., however, I can tell you what I went thru.
I first read about 80% of this sites postings. I then had my car checked out by a Jaguar mechanic for any problems and what the service records were before I bought.
Then I checked out warranties. With what you are looking for most likely you will be purchasing one with more than 60K miles. There isn't much out there for high miles and if there is it is not fully covered no matter what you buy. So I decided to take my money and put it in the bank for when something does happen. I think its the price of owning a Jag. There is no getting around it.
I then called my insurance company to see what the cost would be. For me I paid a couple more hundred every 6 months. I didn't think that was so bad. I also will be storing it in the winter since I live in MN and don't care for the way others drive in the snow. They think they can still drive 75 mph in 6/8 inches on the road. So the cost of storage is only a couple hundred every 6 months.
Once I read up and had her checked out I felt much more comfortable making the decision I did. It is alot of money for a car when it is already 6/7 years old with 75/80K miles on them. But I figure I would probably die wanting so bought it instead.
I have had her a couple of weeks and love it. However, I tend to park it in much more secure places now than I did with my other cars. I am a little paranoid. I also had the dealership include some smaller repairs when I made my deal. My tilt motor was out (which is a common XJ problem) and it needed brakes. Also had the sunroof tracks greased. It is an XJ6 with 74K miles, BRG, and I paid $15K. She is in great shape also. I got about $4K knocked off their asking price. If I hadn't fallen in love with this car I would have waited till late August to buy. Now they have a 98 Deep blue sapphire XJ that I think is beautiful also, I have to stay away from there. Pretty soon I will want another!
Good luck to you and remember you only live once. Unless however, you are a CAT.
Jags on the road with red rear signal lights...as a British car, don't all signal lights have to be amber, and what years did they use red for signal lights...I assume only a few years at most
My 1960 Vauxhall has (Actually very very rare) red turn signal lenses in it as it was a LHD export model for the Canadian market. UK Models had amber turn signal lenses. Ditto the 88-94 (XJ40) sedans.
Did any of the series 3's have all red lenses? I remember seeing them, but I was told they don't exist, so I'm wondering if it was just my imagination? I know the series 2 had all yellow taillights, with a red bulb underneath for the U.S. regulations. Kinda odd looking to have amber taillights, IMO.
Recently my left front fog light went out on my 95xj6. the car care manual says the dealer should really repair any blown fog light lamps. My question is does any one know how the fog light assemply detaches from the bumper and how can i change the lamp inside the assembly?
Bill - I'm an XK8 crazed wannebe potential buyer. I keep reading this site to educate me in general on Jags. I've learned alot even though it pertains to XJ6s. There is still information that pertains to all recent year Jags, like paint colors, tires, brakes, etc. After reading your message #636, do you think that XK8s are also coming down on the wholesale market as well?
My XJ6 that I recently purchased has a right rear sag of about 1/2 inch. when measured on a level surface. Been told its a rear spring problem, and also been told two new springs would not fix this problem. Anyone out there ever heard,or had this problem?
Lesliejoy: I have the same problem with the brake pedal clicking on my 97 XJ6L, but it only happens every now and then. When I first heard it, I really wigged out! But after I had been driving awhile, it stopped. Since this doesn't occur everyday, I'm ignoring it for now. My brakes were recently replaced and my car just went through the 120 point inspection with no problems other than a blown lighter fuse. Come to think of it, I haven't heard the clicking since I had the mechanic put Jaguar brake pads on instead of the others that he used (obviously not an official Jaguar mechanic or he would've known better). Lesson learned: never, ever allow any other brake pads (or parts, of course) to be put on my Jag. The Cat is VERY sensitive and picky! I don't blame her--we have that in common ( :
XK8s have come down a bit lately but havent "crashed".
The market on them is less volatile than it can be on the Sedans of late..
RIght now they are wholesaling for between $25K or so for a nice 97 Coupe (If you can find one) to about $60K or so for a pristine low-mile 01 Convertible.
All depends on what you want. I buy a fair amount of Jags... I recently picked up 2 98 ragtops for a client in Chicago. Both had about 30K miles (One was like 28K and one was at 30K) and both we clean, no paintwork..etc...
One was Silver (Meteorite)/Oatmeal with 28K. That cost me $40,700 (Silver=$$.. guy wanted it tho..) The 30K mile one was Sapphire Blue/Ivory. That cost me $39,000 (Fair.. but needed 2 tires)
Thanks - Encouraging news about slight drop in XK8 prices. I like the coupes better. Do they have sunroofs? My dream car would be a Sapphire Blue coupe. The '97 pricing is most appealing. I have a '94 BMW 525i that's immaculate but high miles (138k) that's probably only worth $12k, but is paid for.
Yup... 97 Coupe with 45K on it or so is a $26K or so car at the auction.
Well, 3 have sold in the SE recently. all were Blue (!) and all had about 40-45K miles (double !!).
One was $25,800 one was $26,500 one was $29,500 (What were they thinking?)
Sapphire is stunning, I agree! They do not have sunroofs. After about 1997 (When Jaguar built and shipped a bunch) Coupes have become very very scarce. They also trail the convertibles in value quite a bit...
So you may have some looking to do to find one. They are just uncommon cars... But I think they look better than the convertibles. The market is pretty weakon them though..
As far as the 525i, If it's real clean I agree that you ought tobe able to retail it in the $11-12K range I think. You might not be happy to hear wholesale on it... ($8K or so) If you do plan on resale though, I would seriously consider a convertible. They are generally quite easy to resell, coupes can be tricky...
My wife wants a jag,I am looking to get into one fairly inexpensively. I see a 1989 xjs in Des Moines with light damage to the front passenger side door. They want just short of 4k and I have a good body man that can fix it. Any idea about whether this vehicle is one to avoid? If so, what would you look at?
Bill - You are absolutely the BEST! Thanks for the advice. No sunroofs on the coupes? What were they thinking! I can't imagine not having a sunroof on a hardtop. I'll have to re-think the soft top as an option now. Luckily I live in California, land of sunshine and power outages.

If that doesn't work: go to ebay.com and then do a search for jaguar wood steering wheel. (It reads jaguar XJ8 wood steering wheel.)
There are a couple of pictures.
Thanks
He informed me my SDZ interior is Cashmere. Wheel color for that is called Sable code AEK.
I'm going there tomorrow to see if there is much difference in the color.
Thanks for your help.

What are the two warning lights under the speedo for? one is amber and one is red. Just needed to know if any one of the lights come on.
thanks
The red light indicates a critical problem that prevents the safe operation of the vehicle. If the red light comes on you should pull over and either fix the problem or have the car towed to a dealer. (call 1-800-4JAGUAR if you are still under warrenty)
Check out the pic of Bill's VDP several posts up (there are two in this forum).

In '96, the Bright Turquoise was still available as well as an additional blue/green called "Aquamarine Pearl".
Unfortunately, Edmunds doesn't have color swatches listed, only the names.
Nice Car, Bill if I do say so myself! Notice how well that VDP corners!
I remember seeing a 96 VDP in Turquoise at the auction in PA back in Feb 99 or so. Car had like 26K miles... beautiful condition. At the time a $30-31K car if a nice color.

I.E. You cant get it out of park unless your foot is on the brake.
Its' a possibility...

I suppose that is no consolation to you though.
The problem is, what to do. Dollars to donuts (old saying; I have no idea what it means), they've thrown away the original wood piece -- but I'd want them to try Real Hard to find a matching piece.

And, one thing I love about the (Currently under ressurection) XKE that I have is that it is much faster than the X300s.
Hell, the only faster Jaguar I have ever driven is a V8 XJR or XKR! I think its a bit quicker than an X300 XJR... sure as heck FEELS faster.
And, as some of you know, I have a lead foot. Did you know that an XJ8 can hit 140 in under 30 seconds? I had never timed it before...
Oh for the joys of FL Toll Rd 417 at 7am on a Sunday

level surface. Been told its a rear spring problem, and also been told two new springs would
not fix this problem. Anyone out there ever heard,or had this problem?
Its not a fun job per se but you can easily do it yourself and save $$$$

The market on them is less volatile than it can be on the Sedans of late..
RIght now they are wholesaling for between $25K or so for a nice 97 Coupe (If you can find one) to about $60K or so for a pristine low-mile 01 Convertible.
All depends on what you want. I buy a fair amount of Jags... I recently picked up 2 98 ragtops for a client in Chicago. Both had about 30K miles (One was like 28K and one was at 30K) and both we clean, no paintwork..etc...
One was Silver (Meteorite)/Oatmeal with 28K. That cost me $40,700 (Silver=$$.. guy wanted it tho..)
The 30K mile one was Sapphire Blue/Ivory. That cost me $39,000 (Fair.. but needed 2 tires)

The early XJ (X300s) have a roblem with the springs going weak and the car sagging.
The UK Magazine "Jaguar Monthly" did a piece on this not too long ago. New springs generally cure it.

A friend is considering the purchase of either a
1996 Mercedes Benz S 320 or a 1996 Jaguar XJ6.
What would you consider the strengths of both?
What price should he pay from a dealer for either comparably equipped?
Advice /suggestions?
Thanks,

Best to you,
Barbara
