Just bought a new 2003 HL 2wd limited V6 with full loaded: leather seat, sun/moon root, 6 cd changer, tow hitch ...for 31500 out of the door including tax and license fee. Is it a good deal?
  • goldstongoldston Member Posts: 110
The numbers sound right to me. In other words, I would be happy with what you have described.

btw: My wife & I own a 2001 & 2002 H/L 2wd Limited V6 loaded up as you describe and our out-the-door pricing was in line with your pricing.

    Enjoy your H/L, it's a great vehicle.

    Best regards, Phil

to msg 585 - I am looking to purchase within the next month in MD and I want to avoid one of those classes that you mentioned. Any suggested dealerships? How long ago did you purchase your HL?
  • dragon9dragon9 Member Posts: 2
Thank you very much, Phil. I wasn't sure that I had a good deal or not. Your message helped a lot.

We purchased about 10 days ago. Try the dealer in Gaithersburg. They played everything straight with us. Ask for Mr. Savage.

    I am considering the following:

2003 V6, power cloth seats, convenience package, roof rack, etc. Quoted $26,100, less $750 rebate = $25,350

or, similar to above with leather. Quoted $27100, less $750 rebate = $26350

There are no interest rate specials in my area for 60 months, so I'm going with the rebate. Are these prices good, average, or bad?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Can anyone suggest a dealer or broker in the Pacific NW that will sell the HL at or near invoice? I'm located in the Seattle area but I'm willing to travel to Nothern Oregon or anywhere in Washington State.

Has anyone out there tried moving one of the back seat headrests to the front. They appear to be smaller.

Wanted to see what people thought of this quote I just got for an 03 Highlander:

    4 cylinder/FWD
QO, Z1, DR, UZ, MG, RL and FE
Dealer said he will sell it to me at invoice which is $23,168.

    Thoughts??
  • daimhdaimh Member Posts: 1
    Is this a real invoice?
this model with this configuration should be 22537 according to edmunds.
  • palmerpalmer Member Posts: 33
Good question. Just believed what the internet salesman told me. I was going to check if I went in for a test drive. If Edmunds is correct, looks like a got a little more negotiating left. Thanks.

In reference to post#601 I purchased a 2002 Highlander Limited 4x4 fully loaded like yours, without the dimmer for the rear view mirror. Purchased in NYC(BKLYN) in 10-02 for 32K before taxes and title. Sticker price of vehicle was 36K, and dealer invoice was $31,600

We just purchased a 2003 Highlander 4X4 V6 base model with convenience, preferred and appearance packages. It also has roof rack, running lights, heated mirrors, driver/passenger airbags, tow pkg, wheel locks, mats and security system. With destination and TDA, the sticker was 30,547. We paid 27,250. Anybody know if this was a decent deal ?

Looking to buy a limited V6 All Wheel Drive
Any ideas how much should be paid?
  • gklatvgklatv Member Posts: 35
shamrockpatric - recent posts on this forum and elsewhere indicate that '03 HLs could be have anywhere from just at invoice to up to $700-1000 over invoice nowadays depending of the location, timing and your negotiation skills. I would risk to say that V6 AWD Ltd. pretty loaded could be bought at about $31.7K today.
  • delguydelguy Member Posts: 43
How often are there Incentives on the Highlander? I'm trying to decide if it's worth waiting a few months.
  • palmerpalmer Member Posts: 33
I posted in early March that a Toyota dealer offered me the following deal on an 03 Highlander:

    4 cylinder/FWD
QO, Z1, DR, UZ, MG, RL and FE
Dealer said he will sell it to me at invoice which is $23,168.

That same dealer just called me about today, offering the same highlander above for $22,500. I think this is a pretty good deal but is it? Is the highlander up for major revisions for 04 and they are starting to think about moving 03's?
  • rmui1rmui1 Member Posts: 48
Maybe Toyota is still giving dealer cash on Highlanders. I read somewhere, don't know if it's true, last month dealers were getting $750 back on Highlanders. I noticed lately Toyota is more agressive on their financing deals for at least some models, sales must be still on decline.
  • bushmillsbushmills Member Posts: 1
mangoreo2- I bought a Millenium Silver with same options and sticker. You got a great deal. I paid $27,175 internet price.
  • vintagegoldvintagegold Member Posts: 14
I think I got a pretty good deal:
    $29,827 for a V6 2WD Limited with:
    Side Airbags
    Vehicle Skid Control
    Sunroof
    Leather
    Heated Seats
    CD changer
    Preferred Accessory Package
    Towing Prep Package

It is about $500 over what Consumer Reports' pricing report lists as their wholesale plus invoice on options.

Do you think I could have done much better?
  • dgopelikadgopelika Member Posts: 7
Price varies by area. To get a general idea, go to carsdirect.com by zip code. Put in different zip codes and see different prices. Southeastern toyota has some of the biggest add-ons, but has some of the best discounts. Most of the cars have the "toyo whatever", which is a rip-off, but some don't and you can get a few "free" options since you don't get the "toyo nothing". Southeastern Toyota does have the capability to add at the port. Like leather seats and other stuff on the base model. Check the Columbia South Carolina dealership for online below invoice prices (includes rebate). Check Idaho for "no deal". Prior to April the Idaho dealers would take off enough to take the T Ball team to McDonalds one time. You could fly to Columbia and cruise the US and have money left over. Alabama in some parts is below invoice. Use cars direct as a focal point, but don't rely on your zip code. I got an offer from carsdirect and took it to the local dealer (Auburn) and they couldn't get within $1000 even though they had an offer in their face. 100 miles out of Auburn saved $1000. Georgia has some good zip codes also. Sample and call or Fax. Get your Highlander under invoice.

First off, that sounds like a great price. Congratulations. I have a couple of questions about your consumer report thing in regards to incentives.
    1) when did you buy?
    2) did the report show any factory to dealer incentive?

The reason I ask is I think Toyota occasionally gives small factory to dealer incentives, but doesn't tell Edmunds. I guess I'm just trying to decide if I should fork out the $12 for the CR report.

    Thanks.
  • vintagegoldvintagegold Member Posts: 14
The CR pricing report listed a "holdback" of several hundred dollars. I found the report to be very helpful. It let me know that I was in the ball park. The invoice price listed by the dealer was $30,441 and that was not too far from what both Edmunds and KBB listed as invoice prices. The CR report showed it to be a little bit lower than those. When I referred to the invoice numbers for the options rather than the MSRP for them, the saleman told me that they were wrong. Based on the deal I got, it seems he was wrong (I am being kind). My peace of mind was worth the $12.
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
I don't have anything against the Consumer Reports $12 new car price service (I purchased one myself), but I wouldn't necessarily assume that Consumer Reports is more up-to-date on dealer incentives than Edmunds.com, or vice-versa. Though it's been a while since I've been car pricing, I seem to recall that several web sites provide info on current dealer incentives and manufacturer rebates.
  • phlyppphlypp Member Posts: 7
I did buy a report of a popular magazine, listed the Dealer Holdback (incentive) at $506 for 4x4, $537 for 4x4v6 and $616 for 4x4 v6 Limited as of 3/13/03.
  • delguydelguy Member Posts: 43
Thanks for the holdback into. I think Toyota is 2% of base MSRP. Did you report mention anything about a factory to dealer incentive. I've heard rumors of a $750 one.
  • akincaakinca Member Posts: 8
A quick question for all of you . . . how many of you compared the Honda Pilot with the Highlander? I'm in the market for a new car and have narrowed my choices to these two suv's. What was the ultimate decision maker in choosing the Highlander? I would love any input you have. Thanks!
  • phlyppphlypp Member Posts: 7
If you haven't noticed, there is a separate discussion board just on this comparison with 95 posts. It's run into the ground.

Just paid $26,700 4 days ago for the typical appearance, towing, preferred package w/spoiler and mats. MSRP was about $30,300. If i do math right, was about $400 under invoice and they still made several hundreds. Biggest factor was time, took about a month of waiting them out (mostly because I didn't want to pay for options I didn't want but that's another story) but they eventually came around. Luckily, I didn't really care it I bought a new vehicle, figure the 04 HLs are due for an upgrade anyway. Generally, Honda does minor upgrades every three years and major every six, haven't tracked Toyota yet.

Starting to look for a AWK V6, would like only air bags, skid control as options. Any thoughts out there on price? I'm very willing to wait for a while.
  • vintagegoldvintagegold Member Posts: 14
You may well have to order it. At least in the metro DC area, skid control is only available on the Limited models even though it seems from even Toyota's website that it could be an option on any model. You probably will have to wait for it to be built. Not sure how that pricing would work on the custom order. I had wanted a V6 FWD with side airbags and skid control being my highest priority options. It didn't exist. Could get the side air bags easily but not the skid control. I ended up getting the Limited model for the skid control. Can't say that I am crying the blues about having the Limited model. I had to spend more than I had hoped but it is hard not to be happy about driving this car.
  • labgirllabgirl Member Posts: 13
Okay, rethinking a little, I'd probably be happy with a AWD 6 cyl, with air bags and little else - I don't really want a Limited. What sets of options am I likely to find commonly? (In other words, assuming I don't want to custom order, how close to what I want will I find?) I don't want a sunroof. I'm in the Boston area, looking to buy in
    June or July probably.
  • vintagegoldvintagegold Member Posts: 14
If you are willing to forego the skid control, you should have a lot to choose from that are not Limited. Not sure how they are equipping them. You may be able to view the local dealerships' inventories over the internet. That would give you a really good idea of what combinations are available in your area. You could also request a price quote from several of the dealers in your area through Edmunds.com or KellyBlueBook.com.
  • labgirllabgirl Member Posts: 13
Well,I just found Toyota of Nashua's web site which lists available basic configurations for NE. The more basic 4x4 6 which has roof rack, Convenience package, side air bags, heated outside mirrors and appearance package lists at 30,188/27,025 so I'm hoping I can find one like that for around 27,500.
  • rmui1rmui1 Member Posts: 48
You can get good prices from these competing dealers. Maybe at invoice, or a little less if there's factory incentives. You can make offer via internet with them and get good prices with low pressure, but do yourself a favor and don't go to the showrooms until the price is firm unless you enjoy mind wargames. Some of those guys confirm all the bad rap that goes around about car saleman.

They were great to deal with.

I was trading in a 1999 Ford Windstar. They gave me a good deal on it and I paid just below invoice for a 2003 HL with the following options:
    Cruise Control
    Power Mirrors
    Power drivers seat
Heated Mirrors ( they were great this winter )
    Roof Rack
    Towing Prep Package
    Standard CD/Radio w/six speakers
    Moonroof
    Power door locks
    Remote keyless entry
    Wired for alarm
    Alloy Wheels
    Wheel Locks

We also bought the extended warranty 7 years or 72K miles for a one time price of $680.00, well worth it IMHO.

We paid $26,888 with 3.9% financing.

It's a great vehicle. We absolutely love it.

The people at the dealership were very friendly and did not push us, they just let us do our own thing. Very refreshing.

    Good Luck in you Quest.

I just negotiated the following deal on a
4 cyl./2WD HL in bluestone metallic with the following options:

    --Side air bags

    --Roof rack

    --Keyless entry

    --Mud guards

    --Floor mats

Dealer also threw in free pinstriping as part of a special raffle/promotion. Out the door cost (including tax) comes to $25,092 with 3.9% financing. Would like your thoughts.
  • rmui1rmui1 Member Posts: 48
This sounds very high, even close to MSRP. When I bought my 4cyl 2WD mid Feb. discounts in MA area was $2.8-4k off MSRP $25,544 vehicles. It sounds like you're doing a special order--side airbags in a 4cyc--maybe that's the reason for the small discount?
  • spindoctor1spindoctor1 Member Posts: 5
Let's back track. I actually paid $22,750 for the car plus tax. That includes the options listed above.

I want to buy a used Highlander V6, 4WD, not necessarily a Limited. I've looked at autoweb, cars.com and a few others and checked in with a lot of dealers but the pricing here gets tricky since the only invoice on options pricing I seem to be able to get over the net relates to 2003 models. Can anyone offer advice? I am interested in buying a used car because I want to save the first year's depreciation and except for the armrest in the back seat, there have been no major changes in the car since 2001.
  • triton86triton86 Member Posts: 7
"...except for the armrest in the back seat, there have been no major changes in the car since 2001."

I, too, am considering the Highlander (both used and new), and I think the center console is a (major?) change from the 2001 introduction.

Also, right now I think the prices on 2003 Highlanders are below invoice (including incentives), so that may help you with your concerns regarding 1st year depreciation. In fact, this morning I received a call from a used-car dealer, telling me they have access to a 2002 V6 Highlander (4x2, not Limited), 18k miles, everything except leather, for ~$25k-$26k. Then this afternoon, I got another call, this time from a new car dealer, offering 2003 V6 Highlander Limiteds (several to choose from, apparently), at $1000 below invoice. I've tried to run the numbers, and there may be some fudging, but it's clearly below invoice. At any rate, a fairly loaded Limited prices out to $28,500. That's before tax and title, but I don't know if that's also before destination ($510).

My hesitation is due to not being able to decide whether I prefer to wait for the Sienna prices to come down.
