I made my first visit to the dealer yesterday. They didn't really have what I was looking for (4x2, 4 cylinder). Everything on the lot had so many dealer add ons that I lost interest. I drove the one 4 cylinder on the lot but I didn't like the color or the extras.

The sales rep was pretty cool about not putting on too much heat. Yes, I did get the "If we can make the numbers right, blah, blah, blah" from the sales manager. I told them to give me a call if they come up with something without so many extras I don't want or need.

    Hi all!
I bought an 03 HL [base]V-6 AWD in Bluestone equipped as follows: Accessory Package, Appearance Package, Convenience Package, Preferred Package, Towing Prep Package, Daytime running lights, Luggage rack, heated mirrors, Power moonroof and front side airbags for $27,000.
By the way, I live in Western PA and there are no incentives of any kind around here.
We are looking forward to taking delivery next week.

    Nakk2, where did you purchase?
We are having a difficult time finding a 4 cyl.4 wd. in Mass. Last price we got was 24,300 and it will take a few weeks to find.
Why is dealer invoice different than the invoice that Edmunds states. Are the dealers making up prices?

"Why is dealer invoice different than the invoice that Edmunds states. Are the dealers making up prices?"

I never met a dealer that didn't make up prices. When I was shopping for my Highlander invariably the dealer-quoted "invoice" was more than the true invoice. Typically they justify it by claiming that "advertising" ("TDA") is part of the invoice price. (It's not.) If you want to challenge them, ask them to list each item on the invoice line by line as you want to ascertain why you and they are off on the invoice. (This would be a good subject for a new discussion board: "Most Amusing Reasons Dealer Said Why "Invoice" Was Inflated.")

I purchased my highlander from Durant Toyota in Weatherford, Texas. It is located out of FortWorth city limits. The price $21,909 is after $1000 toyota rebate. I observed that dealers outskirts give better deals than dealers in the city. Also I got this price over the internet quote using carsdirect.com and specified that I am purchasing the car in 48 hrs after I have actually done all my research and test driving.

My Highlander is the 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive which is the base model.

    Hi all~
Been reading your great posts for a few months...they really helped...finally bought a loaded Bluestone Limited V6 4x4 yesterday!!
Now hopefully my experience will help others:
In my research I had contacted 4 Toyota web sites...2 in New Mexico (where I live) & 2 in Colorado (5-6 hrs.away). Best pricing I got was from a dealership in Co...they quoted $300 over invoice...& the $1000 rebate. That seemed fare enough to me. I would have driven to Co.if need be..but first I made the same offer to my local dealership..in Santa Fe. They had initially offered me about $1000 under MSRP...yea, right! I told them what I was offered from "another dealership"...and they accepted it right away. No hasseling at all.
    Invoice=$32,134, + $300 over invoice, less $1000 rebate.
    Paid $31,434 plus TT&L
Oh, perhaps I could have gotten them down a bit more..but a few bucks wasn't worth my time or the stress!
FYI-I noticed that the "Invoice" price I got at Edmunds.com was never the invoice price I found at any Toyota dealerships web sites...and all the dealerships had the exact same price for the identical car I was pricing....so it didn't seem like a particular "dealerships add-on". Edmunds was $675 lower than actual invoice prices. One guy told me that perhaps it was the "advertising fee" that Edmunds does not consider. Don't know?
Just don't be surprised when invoice is a little higher than you thought it would be.
ALSO-Watch out when you go into that "financial office"...they snuck $200 on to my contract for "Security Etching" without even asking me if I wanted it. I'm so grateful I found it while looking over the contract before signing!
Anyway, I feel good about the whole deal...and not surprised about the $200 "scam" in Finance Dept...don't they always try something!?! But I'll report it when I do the survey.
The car is wonderful. Love that sunroof, smooth ride & smell of leather!
PS-brakes seem fine to me...not soft like others have reported...& my last 3 cars have been Volvo's.
    Hope my story helped someone:)

I wish I'd known about this message board in advance of negotiating today in the Carolinas for a 2-Wheel Drive, 4 speed automatic, V-6, Highlander (NOT the limited).

The price the dealer quoted included these options:
    Convenience Package
    Tow Prep Package & Converter
    8-way power drivers seat
    Aluminum Wheels
    Privacy Glass on back window
    Roof Rack
    Prewire for alarm
    Perforated LEATHER faced seats
          and
    REAR SPOILER.

The dealer said after applying the $1,000 rebate to the price, I could have the car for $25,800 plus TT&L. (no trade-in; no financing)

Is the salesman treating this Southern Belle fairly?

I need to know within the next few days before the deal is finalized. Thanks for your help.

According to Edmonds I should be able to get $900 cash back on a Highlander for my zip code in Virginia. I have contacted 2 Toyota dealers in my local area and both told me that the Edmonds info. is incorrect, there are no customer cash back deals in Virginia. Has anyone else run into this problem?
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
Hmmm...this customer rebate is supposedly good thru 8/4. However, it does vary from region to region. I would suggest you call a few other Toyota dealers in the surrounding area and see what they say.

I am looking to purchase a Highlander but am spoiled by the leather seats in my current piece of junk (Land Rover Discovery-don't get one) but just don't want to spend SO much on a new Highlander with leather...am I crazy to think I can pay $22-$24 for a slightly used (less than 20K) on a 2001 or 2002? I am asking those that have done their research! I have noticed they seem hard to come by...please respond!

Found a Highlander Demo car V6 4WD(not Limited) with 5000 miles. If I want the car, how much usually can I negotiate, $2500 under invoice?

    Thanks for inputs!

I purchased a 2WD. I live in the low desert of So. Calif., no rain or snow here.

Well we signed everything and were waiting for our highlander from Woburn Toyota in MA. According to them they had a swap with a dealer about 15 miles away. Later in the week the only one they could find was in VT about 150 miles away. It would have to be driven down. After not hearing from them in a week and a half we started calling and did not receive any phone calls back. Finally I asked for the sales manager and was told that they could not get the truck. We can try waiting about a month for the next shipment. What a lousy feeling to finally decide to buy and not have anything. We are told that the colors and model we want are very rare. I'm ready to start looking at other trucks or wait for the 2004.

    For kelzone-
I'm not sure if I have your story correct..but it sounds like the very same thing that happened to a friend who was buying a brand new HL in 2002...9 mo.ago. They had signed all paperwork for their new HL...and the dealer had possession of their trade-in. All was well..they thought! The dealership then realized they could not find their Red HL as promised...after waiting over 2 weeks! The dealership was great however. They gave them a 2003 instead! They were SO happy to get an '03....and the dealership did the right thing!
Sounds like your dealership should treat you the same way. Good luck!

Which dealer in W. PA.? I am looking at the same model/options. They quoted me $500 over invoice -- which has $450 of fees i cannot trace. That brings the total to $28,464 with an invoice of 27,964. Take out the mystery $450 and the dealer hold of about $540 it ends up $26,963. Is the dealer really selling you this vehicle for a $37 profit?
  • fvpfvp Member Posts: 147
The final price was $27,500 - not $27,000. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail and I'll provide you with more details.
    Thanks,
    Frank
  • rubyruizrubyruiz Member Posts: 13
It had all the Factory installed options and packages as described by the person who bought the bluestone highlander for 27500.00.

I also got the moonroof plus a car alarm

I wanted to ask you if that included a rebate...did it include your trade in?

I paid 27445.00 for everything I described. This price included a 750.00 rebate.

I think I could have maybe saved another 300 or 400. But, I was so tired of haggling and quibling.

One place was going to give me the car for 27500.00, then when I went in the back they said they would if I bought an extended warranty and alarm or lojack.

I went to another dealer and got the 27445.00 including the alarm after the rebate. I felt the dealers were taking advantage of the rebate (of course).

After taxes and charges for registration I paid 29,885.00.

I was very happy to get it all for under 30,00.00!

    How did I do?

    Cassie
  • fvpfvp Member Posts: 147
Your deal was the same as mine - $27,500 plus tax and plates. I traded a Jeep Cherokee [$15,000] so my final number was lower than yours.
I live in Western PA and there are no rebates around here - HL's sell without them.

hey all...sat down with a dealer to talk numbers on a HL over the weekend. a couple of issues came up...1) the invoice that they showed me on the car was about $350 higher than what edmunds had. (regional marketing/advertising?? other ideas?) 2) although edmunds claims there is a $950 FACTORY TO DEALER MARKETING INCENTIVE in our area, the dealer claimed to know nothing about this. question: how can a prospective car buyer pry this out of a dealer and/or give proof that such an incentive exists, so that it can be up for negotiation?

KarenS or host, if there's another board on this question that can help resolve, please point me in the right direction. thanks!
  • johnekjohnek Member Posts: 2
I looking to buy a '03 Highlander and the salesman is also playing the invoice game. The invoices shows 27400 and I get the old
"I got to make something on the car". Edmunds TMV is around 26700. Is it unreasonable to ask for a deal lower than invoice? Just wondering.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The invoice could differ due to TDA I suppose (Toy. Dealer [non-permissible content removed]'n; another name for ad fees). And the incentive could be different from what we have.

It's better, imo, just to assume the incentive applies and calculate your out the door price and try to stick to it. Don't worry about explaining to the dealer about how you got to that price. Just mumble something about Edmunds and keep pounding on the desk :-)

    Good luck!

    MSRP 30028
    EDMONDS(REAL) INVOICE 26562
    DEALER INVOICE 26991

    SELLING PRICE 26545
    + PROCESSING FEE 198
    + TAX $ TAG 839
    = OUT THE DOOR 27582

I hate to but a car this time of year. So I thought about shooting for 26000 selling price and if not taken, wait fot the 2004s. Even if I had to pay 1000 over invoice for an 04 it would seem to be better than 500 below invoice for an 03. Any advice?

If any one has recently purchased Highlender Limited 2003 model in Western PA, Please advise the good contact and local dealer. What are the best deal below the invoice price. Is the dealer invoice supposed to have TDA $562, Dealer Hold Back $621 and Whsl Financial Reseve $ 310. These does not seem to belongs to Invoice pricing. Is buyer supposed to pay??? Pls advise your best deal. Thank You.

i am going through exactly the same thought process as you are. at some point, if the market is efficient, you will see the '03's drop down to $2000-2500 less than the '04's (via rebates, dealer incentives, etc.), because that will be the blue book spread out in time when they are used.

from personal experience, i don't think that's happened yet. dealers in this area (Denver) are still clinging to invoice + pricing, if anything the advertised prices have gone up about $1000 since mid-july...very aggravating, since we are closer to the model year end, and i perceive that the supply is about the same. the large dealers have 40-50 on their lots. i would think they are gonna have to start moving on them quick...will let you know when i start to see it.

your offer as articulated seems fair and wise. i would go for it and at least test how far apart you are. waiting for the '04's is definitely an option to preserve value.

let me know how it goes.
  • rubyruizrubyruiz Member Posts: 13
What options does the car include....Does it have the moonroof?

And my goodness you're lucky...your rate of tax seems realy low compared to mine in NY where it is 8.5%....The tax on the car was over 2000.00!

The selling price was 27445.00 for my Highlander...V6AWD.

It had a moonroof and factory installed options (see post 717.) Also a dealer installed alarm which I was horribly ripped off for, it was jacked up to basically eat up the 750.00 rebate in my area. C'est la vie

Its millenium silver. I wish I could have waited, but I just wanted to get it bought before the summer...I am a teacher and get real busy in the fall.

I feel I could have gotten a little better deal...I got so tired of haggling and it seemed that I get something down and then it would go back up...such a yoyo game.

Please let me know what your price includes.

Did you actually present the Edmund's info to the dealer. I will be going with my mom to buy a Camry in the weeks to come and waant to know if this would help. I always feel that the dealer will negate the info, so I think it better to present numbers and and try to stick to your guns and walk out if the salesperson is to unreasonable.

Also, to those who are having rebates according to the Edmunds Toyota Rebate info Toyota doesn't offer one National rebate...it varies by area. For my zip code Edmunds said 900.00, but it was really 750.00

I felt that the dealers kept on manipulating the rebate into the deal. I would insist on negotiating the price without discussing the rebate, but in the end I got charged 695.00 for an alarm that probably cost the dealer 75.00, that was how they yoyoed the price back up. All in all I feel I did well, but think I should have gotten the car for 2700.00

4X4 Highlender in Western PA. One of the dealer has offered $ 400 above the Edmond invoice price for Fulley loaded LTD with Leather, Moon Roof, Vehichel Skid control, Heated seat,Tow Hitch plus Tow Prep package, Side Air Bags, JBL 6CD Premium Radio. This comes to $ 31700. Is this seem right or is too much. Your advise will help otherwise I will have to go back to Honda Pilot.
  • prajapatiprajapati Member Posts: 33
Honda Pilot has option of carrying eight pax (albeit cramped but not bad if it's occasional short city trips!) but won't have side air bags and VSC which are good safety features. If safety is important then go with highlander, if PAX capacity and ride is important then go with Pilot and if safety and PAX capacity is important then wait for 2004 highlander!
  • johnekjohnek Member Posts: 2
Last week I purchased a 4x4 V6 2003 Highlander in New Jersey and it had the following options:

    DR Roof Rack
    RL Daytime Running Lights
    EH Heated Side View Mirrors
    SR Moonroof/Power Tilt Steering
    BE Driver/Passenger Side Airbags
    TO Tow Prep Package
    AG Appearance Package
    CQ Convenience Package
    HE Preferred Package
    WL Wheel Locks
    RF Rear Spoiler
    GN Cargo Net
    CF Carpet Mat Set

    The Total MSRP was $31,571
    Dealer Invoice was $28,121
    *** I paid $27,500 ***

And I got 0.0% financing for 24 months on 50% of the total cost of the car. I believe I got a good deal but it also seemed too easy, so I know the dealer still made a profit.

HL has a College Graduate Incentive ($400). What is the definition of college graduate? I got my Master's degree in May 2002. Can I still qualify?
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
Where did you hear/read that the Highlander has a college graduate incentive? I never heard of such an incentive; is it listed as an official incentive on a reputable website that provides car pricing information? If not I suspect it was a term a dealership devised to attract customers or sweeten a deal. In any event if a dealership is offering such an incentive then there's no reason to look a gift horse in the mouth -- just make sure you know the invoice price and any other incentives that are available -- check-out "10 steps for buying a new car" on the Edmunds website. My guess is that if you have a master's degree, then you're definitely a college graduate.
  • rubyruizrubyruiz Member Posts: 13
I was told by a dealer that to qualify for collee grad rebate you had to have graduated within the past 2 years. I am not sure if if it was for only undergraduate school. I would definitely present the graduate dgree and try to go for it!

Johnek...the 27500 for the V64wd seems to be the best deel going. I paid 27445 and did not get the spoiler or Cargo net!

My did involve a car alarm though...but that was totally a rip off price which basically ate up the rebate.

I was happy when all was said and done (meaning price with tax and tags) I was under 30,00.00

I initially figured the car would wind up over 30thousand and that was with out the moonroof.
But, once I started working with Edmi=unds and Consumer Reports wholesale price I saw that I could work on a car with "the roof" and still come out under 30, 000.

I love the highlander...it is so peaceful to drive.

Where'd you buy? If you don't want to name the dealership, you can tell me what highway it is on. That is a great deal, better than what I've found as I begin my search in northern NJ.
  • heidmanrheidmanr Member Posts: 8
The Toyota web site discusses the college grad rebate. Pasted from the web site:

To qualify for Toyota's College Graduate Rebate Program, you'll need to:****

Have graduated from an accredited four-year college, university or registered nursing degree program in the last two years or graduate from such a school/program within the next six months; have graduated from an accredited two-year college in the last two years; or be enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program or have received a degree from an accredited graduate degree program during the last two years.

However, you must finance through Toyota, the rebate is $400. I too obtained my Masters Degree within the past two years, so if my choice is a Toyota (4R or HL) then I will use it as well. BTW Nissan and Ford have them as well, as I am looking at the PF and the Explorer. My purchase is coming up in three weeks after returning from Korea. Hope this info helps.

What are the best prices people have found on Highlander's in the Austin, TX area? Which dealers, how much, etc....

    Hello,
We are shopping in NY/NJ and it would be very helpful if you could share your dealer's name. If you would prefer a private medium, my email address is aigenga@yahoo.com
    Thanks
    Gary
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Even more private would be marking your email public in your profile and directing requests there. You may still get spammed, but it's a bit more hassle for a spammer to harvest the address.

Click on a poster's name to get to the profile.

It's also ok to name your dealer/location in the boards (no individual's names or contact info though, please.)

Sorry to be so late in responding. The HL I am considering is non-limited 4x4 v6 silver with appearance package, preferred package, convenience package, roof rack, towing prep. package, mudguards, daytime running lights, and one or two other minor items. No moonroof. MSRP $30028. Edmond's real invoice $26563. I offered $26000 before taxes, fees, and tags; which amounted to $27021 out the door ($198 processing fee and 3% sales tax). There is no rebate in my area. The dealer's best and final price was $26250 or $27333 out the door. This is about $310 below Edmond's invoice and way below Edmund's TMV. I think it is a good deal, but thought I should do a little better because I think I will be able to get a similar 2004 for $1500 or so over invoice. But I may be dreaming. It is a gamble. I agree with wyoreb that the price difference between 03 and 04 should be approx. $2000 to justify buying an 03 this time of year. The problem is having to wait when in need of a car. Also, I am not totally convinced the new engine/trans package will be an improvement. When they add that 5th gear to lower the final drive ratio to improve gas mileage it will cause much more downshifting on hills, even with more horsepower. I had a Honda Odyssey geared like this and hated it. Let me know what you think.
  • rubyruizrubyruiz Member Posts: 13
I priced the same car...without the roof initially. I got the dealer to about 26988.00 and then I would have taken the 750.00 rebate to make the selling price of the car 26238.00 I think it gets so nit picky when it comes down to the wire...I kind of throw in the towel and say fine...let them make another 250.00! I just get sick of the haggling.

But, as you can see...the rebates don't seem to mean a whole lot because with them the dealer stays at a certain price...and the rebate brings it down to the price that a wise consumer like yourself is getting! I argued about it, I said I would wait 6-8 weeks to get the rebate directly from the manufacturer...I just couldn't get the rebate out of the negotiations...so they are basically a come on as far as I am concerned...but in the end I was satisfied with the deal...it just took a lot of energy. But, I just get obsessive about getting the best deal possible and I second guessed myself aferwards. At least coming here to post gets it out of my system.

I think its a good price...but then there is always after labor day!!!

Basically, when I felt I was doing so well with the price w/out moon roof, I decided what the heck..I will treat myself to the "roof" as we call it around here. So, my selling price was 27445.00 with the roof and an alarm. That was over the Edmunds price by about 400.00.

But, again where are from that your sales taxes are so low!? I am just curious. Are you financing...?with Toyota...? Did that help you to bring the price down?

Thanks for posting...let us know when you finally buy.

I am glad I got the '04 Highlander..I don't know about the 3rd row seating, but I definitely don't want that...I like my highlander the way it is...and I am very happy with the silver color.
  • reklawcreklawc Member Posts: 27
It seems that you got your HL for the best price possible from your dealer at that time. I agree that at some point the hassle exceeds the monetary reward. And the dealers know this. Toyota is particularly difficult to deal with. When the dealer and I got down to the short strokes on the HL, the dealer took away their advertised free 100 gal of gas. Give me a break! However, I paid through the nose for a new 1992 v6 Camry in July of 1992. The v6 was fairly rare at that time. However, over the years I have realized that it was the best car purchase I have ever made. Still runs great, 163000 miles. If you love the car and it is reliable, a few hundred dollars one way or the other is insignificant in the long run. I guess the problem I have with the HL is I am not crazy about the car (or any SUV for that matter) which makes me more difficult to deal with. In answer to your questions---The sales tax is 3% in Virginia (this is the state portion which applies to autos) and I am not financing with Toyota. The dealer has a good many HL in stock and most people in this area want the moonroof and I do not. Perhaps this helps with the price. At this point I may wait to see the 04s before buying.

I bought a 2003 V6 4WD HL 2 weeks ago from the same dealership where I bought my 1990 Camry Wagon V6 LE 14 years ago...I commented to the salesman how the Internet must make his job much harder than it was for the salesmen years ago...he agreed, stating that they must have made a lot more money back then...when I got home I dug out my old paperwork on the Camry and found that I had paid $350 under sticker...for the HL, I paid $4000 under sticker...thanks to all the Internet information that's available...that's quite a chunk out of the dealer's/salesman's profit...

Am picking up my new 03 HL today. I posted on number 733 above, that the College Grad is good for the past two years. However, the SE Region states you have to have graduated within the past year, not two as the Toyota web site states (post number 733 is cut and pasted from the web site). So I will not get the extra $400. Tried to make a deal on an HL that MSRPed for about $27,700, was going to get it for $25,400, minus the $1000 rebate and the $500 military rebate. They tried to find what I wanted over the 5 state region with no luck. They finally offered me an 03 HL on the lot that had the leather, illuminated running boards, security system, all the original options I wanted (roof rack, towing, power seat, privacy glass), alloy wheels, and the wood grain dash, and a few other smaller options. ONce the numbers were tallied up, I got out the door with $27,741 (MSRP was $32,500, cost was about $30,000). They really wanted my business and were willing to cut a deal on this vehicle to "earn my business" as the sales manager stated (I ensure that I spoke directly with him during the process, not just the salesman). We paid a little more than we had planned, but got a LOT of vehicle for the price. Although the special financing is 3.9% versus the rebate, they still offered us 4.5% plus the rebates, so again we think we got a great deal, will pick it up today.

Just bought Toyota blue Highlander, V6, AWD, sunroof etc. First, just went to shop at the dealership in Richmond, VA. They had a pretty good web site by vehicle inventory and then more detailed information on each vehicle with options, prices, picture in most cases thru the web. Was really looking for 2WD Highlander as it was cheaper. Bottom Line for 4WD, 6CYL, SR: Total MSRP was $31,100; paid 28200 + title, taxes $159. proc fee, and saved over 2900+. Wife wanted the sunroof so that drove price higher. The salesman was a nice guy and not pushy so we made the deal for vehicle on their Toyota lot. Some of the options were as follows:
    Sunroof - SR
    AG,
    BE,
    CF,
    CQ,
    DL,
    DR,
    PE,
TO, Security System, Rear defroster, keyless entry, heated mirrors - EH I think, Dest. Charge was $510. It had a nice interior. I think I received a good deal. As I figure dealership made $800. above factory invoice + proc. fee and their factory kick backs.

Anybody bought 04 4Runner or 04 Highlander around Silicon Valley area? How much did you pay? I am looking for a SR5 4x2 with 3rd row seat and curtain airbags. Preferring a leather package too. Similar for Highlander. Thanks.

Back in '01 I bought my Highlander at Piercy Toyota (off of 101/N 1st St near 880) (the front lot looks small but the rear lot is much bigger) -- someone told me they had good prices and my buying experience confirmed this (got ~$1000 below Edmunds TMV) -- I got a good price on my truck back in '83 at Stevens Creek Toyota -- they seem to be a busy dealership still -- I did some negotiating at Toyota Sunnyvale ('01) and they seemed reasonable -- just make sure you know what the invoice price is and negotiate up from there:

Them: "So how much off MSRP do you want?"
You: "I'm willing to go $750 above invoice, including TDA."
Them: "There's no WAY I can go that low -- the sales manager would fire me if I went to him with a deal like that."
    You: "Check with him anyway."
    etc...

    You get the idea.
