I am interested in leasing an Xterra. Anyone out there know exactly what the deal is right now? Usually Nissan is pretty high when it comes to leasing.

xterawanter: I have not had the check engine light come on, but I have emission and/or catalytic converter problems. I have an appointment on Friday at the dealership. I will post the results on Friday.

Thanks for all the responses. I have an appointment on Friday at the dealership.
I will let you all know what they say.

I know I want the X..was going to pay approx 2k more for the SE but I doubt I will use the sunroof and yes, the dash is pretty but is it really worth it..?

They offered 22,800 for the XE manual with 2 pack..(not inc. 5% MA sales tax). Also, the financing is 7.99%...is this a good price/rate? HELP? Or should I get the SE and be done with it..??

kyx: I don't why I didn't think of mentioning this earlier. But, I wanted to let you know that depending upon the amount of interest I can drum up, I may attempt to create a Kentucky Xterra Club. (If you haven't seen the other regional clubs, stop by xterraownersclub.com and browse through them.) None of the existing clubs are accepting members in KY for the time being. I've found a guy up in Indy who may want to help out as well (I'm not adverse to including non-Kentuckians). Let me know if you are interested, or if you know any local X owners who may be. Feel free to email me - it's in my profile.

Can you guys throw some real numbers at me about the gas mileage you receive from your gems? I would like truthful responses about the running around mileage and the trip mileage. I mean can you eek out 22-24 on a trip, or is that just a foolish pipe dream?

The Xterra really climbed up my list last nite after I had done a BlueBook value for a 2000 SE with 10.000 miles. Is it really possible that it is worth 28,000 bucks when the 2000 new was less than 26,000? Interesting.

I have an '00 5sp 4WD 3-pack with 12,400 miles on it now. Since I drove it off the lot, I have gotten an average of 21mpg on 87 octane gas with stock BFG Long TRails at 30 psi. Worst tank was 20mpg, best was 21.5mpg. I drive 90% two-lane highway and rural roads, 10% city (no rush hour). I have never been a speeder so I'm usually going 60mph or less. From all the posts I've seen on this subject, I think driving style plays a very signficant role in mpg. as does tire pressure.

I put very slightly larger-than-stock winter tires on a month or two ago. Mileage is now down to about 19mpg, but the odometer is also off a little due to tire size so I don't think I'm really seeing a signficant mpg difference other than what is due to winter formulation gas and just having a softer and wider tire tread to push along. Plus, now I use 4WD a lot more because of all the snow.

More than you ever wanted to know, I bet. :-)

I'm on my way to pick up my new 01,SE 4x4 auto, alpine green
Thanx for all the great postings as it made my decision at lot easier. I looked and drove just about every SUV model available and think that I made the right decision. I'll post later to let everyone know how I am enjoying it.
  • chettt99chettt99 Member Posts: 10
21 mpg sounds good but 30psi is 4 lbs higher than recommended. What did the BFG's look like before you changed tires? Was most of the wear in the center? I would be concerned about belt separation at 30psi. I am a new xterra owner. Only 200 miles. Any others out there who run at 30psi? Any problems?

Also, I don't understand all the fuss about the sunroof. If you don't use it, leave the cargo rack on. If you would like to use the sunroof, it only takes about 2 minutes to remove the rack. Take it off and leave it at home until you need it. I personally love the sunroof. Even if you don't flip it up, the light that comes in from above really gives an open feeling in the interior. At the very least it will increase your trade or sell value when you buy your next "x".

What's with Edmunds long-term review of the Xterra? They say that no matter how long you keep the defroster on at full-blast, it won't do a complete job of keeping the windows clear. Not a big problem, but for a guy living in Chicago and making frequent trips to Northern Wisconsin, this concerns me a bit. Your comments, please!
  • mindiemindie Member Posts: 109
My mileage ranges anywhere from 14 to 19 mpg. I've never broken into the 20's, though that may change this afternoon, as I seem to have gotten great mileage on my trip down here to Nashville. Part of my problem though is that in Louisville we have reformulated gas that really sucks for mileage purposes (and costs more too). So I get better mileage when I buy gas outside my county. I'll let you know about this most recent tank later this weekend.

chettt - I'm with you 100% on the sunroof. If you don't want to use it, don't! But I have taken off that basket and inside cover and love having the extra light inside the truck.

haus - I have had no trouble at all with the defroster. Granted, the weather in KY isn't too horrible, but I've also taken the X up to Snowshoe, WV, during some snow storm weather and to Michigan. I'm surprised that this is a concern, based upon my experience. Just my thoughts though.

very strange thing...i'm very inconsistant w/ my gas mileage. last tank i filled up i got 16.5 mpg. other times i get anywhere between 14.2 and 15.8 mpg. i have a 5speed, and do mostly highway driving, but living in NJ, i do hit a lot of traffic (murder on left leg) and of course, that lowers my mileage, and we just got some nice snow last night, so 4x4 takes a lot away too. all in all, i'm starting to get used to the mileage, compared to my old '99 VW passat which constantly got between 23 and 26 mpg. i'm filling up every other day!! usually about 200miles per tank.
  • silverxglidersilverxglider Member Posts: 125
I find the defroster works very well. It clears the entire windshield and keeps it clear, no problem. My complaint along this line is that the windshield fogs up really easily if it's at all humid out so you HAVE to use the defroster. That would be fine but if the temp is over about 45 degrees (I think), the defroster basically turns on the AC which I might prefer not to use.

As far as tire pressure goes, my BFG Long Trails look new. I have had them at 30psi since the beginning. There is no unusual wear at all and I plan to put them back on in the spring and run them till they're dead. Nissan may recommend 26 psi but I think that is more for ride quality than anything else. If you look at the tire sidewall, you will see that the tires themselves can go up to 35 psi (I think), depending on the load you're carrying. If you're running with max. load in the vehicle, you're supposed to increase the air pressure because that is actually better for the tires (builds up less heat, better handling, etc.). I think quite a few people have been running at 30 psi or even higher for quite a while. The ride may be a little firmer but the tires won't squeal as much at slow speed and it feels like I have better vehicle control at the higher pressure. (Even Ford upgraded their recommended pressure to 30 psi, I think, since the Firestone tire debacle.)

It has been suggested that to determine optimum pressure, draw a chalk line straight across the tread. Drive a little and see how the line wears off. If it wears in the center more, you're overinflated. Edges wear more, underinflated. Ideally, it should wear off equally across the tread.

I'll agree the X fogs fast.. but the fan does keep up.. I might have to run it as high for the first minute or so.. then its switched to low. The rear side doors stay fogged though. I spray on some antifog bathroom stuff and it seems to help. I plan on making the mod to have the a/c run independant of the defog setting.. just for the choice.
I've always ran my tires at 32.. on the X and every other 4x4 I owned... not aiming at increased mpg, I just prefer the ride more, and never wore out any tire prematurely. I also match the tire to where I drive.. duelers for winter, BFG Long trails for the city.. and I have A/T's for the aggressive times.. it also helps having 3 sets of rims and a good floor jack.

Went to dealership with three major problems:

1)Strong sulfur smell inside and outside truck.

2)O/D off light blinking after starting in morning.

3)Weird smells when running the heat which included burnt popcorn, electrical burning smell and salt water(believe it or not I found others on http://www.xterraowners.com with the same salty smell).

    Dealerships answers:

    1)The 3.3L V6 requires premium grade gas.

    2)O/D is performing self test.

    3)Cannot reproduce.

Summary: This dealership is full of crap! I am going to try the only other dealership that we have in town. I was hoping that I could get these things straightened out and that it would end, but I was driving home from the dealership and my radio started to malfunction(volume will decrease on it's own without touching any controls). If anybody is checking out this board that is considering buying an Xterra, don't let this message scare you off. There are problem vehicles with every brand and even if this Xterra is a "Lemon", I would ask it to be replaced with another one. It is still the best looking, driving and 4WD that I have ever owned!

One year later.. my X still smells.. both the interior and exterior as you mentioned above. I had the initial new truck burn off, and all smells stopped during the summer.. then it returned once the temp. started to fall, with a short drive combo. Have yet to figure out what it is.. or what is burning off when its cold. Doesn't bug me, just strange. maybe that is why you couldn't reproduce it.. your engine was warm ?

The interior heat at high smell only lasts the first minute or two... maybe its bringing in the smell from the exterior smell combo mentioned above.

    Gas is 87 .. ( owners manual ) no idea about O/D, no light ( Stick )

Did you take it to Glenn? I used to take my Altima there for service while I was at UK, and they were good with it. But I have a girl friend who bought an X from them last summer, and she says that service there sucks for her. Who's the other dealer? Ryan Andy or Andy Ryan or whatever it is? I don't know much about them...

I'm not sure if we're too happy with our dealer's service dept. here in Louisville. Maybe because it's historically a Ford (=crap) service dept. So I might be seeking out another service place myself. I'll keep you updated.

silverxglider....thanks for the great feedback. You've convinced me. I will increase to 30psi in the morning. I will also try that chalk idea. I'm still on my first tank of gas. I've gone 230 miles and I have a quarter tank left. If the gauge is right I'm getting about 15mpg. The extra pressure should help.

Does anyone know if there will be more comfortable front seats and a height adjuster on the 2002 models?
The current seats are set too low and nonadjustable for height and I have heard the built in, nonadjustable, lumbar support gets uncomfortable on long trips.

I just found a site with nissan offroad perfomance stuff. www.spencerlowracing.com it has some pretty cool video clips of the X in action and they have some cool performance stuff ie; exhaust, intake, anyone try any of this yet? or know of some other perfomance shops. It seems most versions of add ons are lighting and tires.
Also I have been looking into the Yakima/Thule cargo boxes any x-periences would be helpfull.
  • silverxglidersilverxglider Member Posts: 125
There's hope for your gas mileage. I always look at the gauge when it gets down around a quarter full and start looking for the nearest gas station. Then it takes a lot less than I expected to refill. Nothing wrong with my gauge, just things wrong with my head. :-) So you may find you're already getting better mileage than you think.

it might've been on XOC, but i think it was either xcanuk or silverxglider that had mentioned something about storing a mag lite in the X. i just picked up a mag lite set at at Costco (w/ a small blue mini mag to go w/ my X!!!) and i want to find some place to store it. i'm not TOO creative, but i'd like to find or make some little storage for it, preferably somewhere in reach. let me know...
  • xcanukxcanuk Member Posts: 372
You have plenty of options, but you'll need the clamps for it, some Walmart's, Hunting stores etc. carry them.

Places.. to the side of the shifter console, you can use the existing 2 screws there for the mounts, ( you still have to add another one for each bracket )

I've got a mini mag on my drivers door, on the flat part above the speaker, another on the interior lid of my console, and a 4D on my hatch, opposite the FAK, mounted vertically, I can light up the whole hatch area when it's open, or light up what is behind me as a 3rd hand work light.
  • chettt99chettt99 Member Posts: 10
You were right. I filled up and it only took 15.6 gal. Worked out to 16.6 mpg. Only 15% of the miles were expressway so I'm sure I'll do even better when I do some highway driving. Next time I'm going to wait until the low fuel warning light comes on. I hope I have one. (The manual says "if so equipped")cough cough, uh oh!
  • silverxglidersilverxglider Member Posts: 125
I've never seen the low fuel warning light. I've always been afraid to wait that long. :-)

Plus I read somewhere that it's not good to let the tank run too low because there's always some sludge in the bottom that you don't necessarily want to suck up and send through the engine by running too low. Don't know if that's a real concern these days or just an urban legend though.
  • xcanukxcanuk Member Posts: 372
I've hit the empty tank light a few times, I haven't been "that" low, but you can make it click on if you are on the low side and you take a quick turn. No ill effects so far, and isn't that why the gas filter is there ?? Sometimes its just too damn cold to stand by a pump and fill up.. so I wait that extra day.
  • xcellenttrkxcellenttrk Member Posts: 61
i think that the canadians get the low fuel warning light, along w/ the low windshield wiper fluid light!! BLAME CANADA!! eh! ;) anyway, luckily, i haven't seen the light come on "if so equipped" but i always fill up at 1/4 tank, and i'm at just around 200 miles, and costs less than $20.00...unfortunately, its every other day!! i spend about $60-$80 a week in gas!! ouch!!
  • mindiemindie Member Posts: 109
I've got the low fuel light on my 2001 SE. I've only seen it 2 or 3 times though, and I have always filled up within 5-10 miles of seeing it turn on.

I wish I had the low washer fluid light! I ran out of fluid on my last mudding adventure, and I could've used the advanced notice. Fortunately, my buddy had some fluid with him so I was able to see to get home again. :o)

although I know we had the low washer fluid light, it never shows up during the idiot light start-up, and was beginning to doubt if it existed. I let the fluid get low, and damn.. it finally flickered on. I guess us Canucks need more reminders.. :) side effect from frozen brain cells..

ya know its funny you mention that mindie...i was driving about 30 miles from my house, on a major highway, and it was the day after a snowstorm. all the crap on the roads (especially the salt) miraculously found its way on my windshield!!! about 10 minutes into the ride, i went to clean my windsheild, and viola!! i'm outta fluid!!!! it took me about 20 minutes to finally get off the highway and find a gas station that charged me $2.49 for a gallon!!!

I recently got a 2001 XTerra XE Standard(Canadian). It's at 2000km now but ever since I got it, I've noticed that on cold days (below about -10C) when I first turn the vehicle on I hear this squealing noise under the hood. It buzzes for a second or so, stops then starts up again. I can hear the noise as I shift even up to the 3rd-4th gear sometimes, and this is after letting the car warm up for 5 mins. or so. It eventually goes away as the vehicle gets warmer.

There's too many messages to go back through for the answer so i was hoping someone might know what it is, or whether it's something I need to worry about ASAP. I'll ask my dealer when I bring it in for it's first check up, but should I be taking it in sooner?

Other than the minor inconvieniences like washer fluid that flies over the window at 80km or more, and a lousy places rear wiper button, I love the vehicle! And for the price, I'll take the minor problems.
  • mindiemindie Member Posts: 109
This whole topic reminds me of that commercial that used to be on T.V. where the guy's riding through some mud and dirt in his truck (Jeep Cherokee?) with his girlfriend... they hit a big mud puddle, it splashes up on the windshield, he flips on the wipers, tries to use the fluid, but it's gone, so the wipers just smear the mud around. I think it was for vehix.com? I just remember thinking, That's the kind of thing that would happen to me. And it did. :o)

    Hey all
I wanted to ask and get somewhat of an idea of the price you guys are paying for your X's?

I am really wanting to pruchase or lease a 2001 Xterra. I have been getting conflicting prices of what a Loan and lease would be.

If some of you out there wouldnt mind letting me know what kind of payments you all are making.
Of course please also state if you could:
    Model
    purchase price
    down payment
    Finance Rate
    length of loan

I would greatly appreciate if you could respond. I dont have a whole lot of cash right now due to tax time coming. My lease that i have now on my vehicle is going to be due next month and I would love to be able to try and swing one of these vehicles. I think they are sweet :0

    thanks

I live in MA. Got approved for 6.75% financing..and was offered 25883.50 (USD) including taxes and fees for the SE 2001 4x4. I think this is pretty decent. They are making a little and I saved a little..

    Whatcha think?

    My pricing info:

I got a 2001 SE Automatic 4x4. The sticker price was somewhere in the range of $26,800. My husband was able to pull a deal as he works for a Nissan supplier, so we got a significant discount off the dealer's invoice. We financed the total price of the X plus taxes, title, license, etc., which ended up being $26,200, through a private lender. We had no down payment, and we decided not to trade in my old Honda. I'm not sure of the interest rate, but I remember that the Nissan guys simply gave up on trying to sell us their financing when we told them our rate. We're paying $521 a month for 60 months. I didn't even consider a lease because I drive way too many miles for work, so I don't know what kind of money you'd pay for a lease on an X.

Hope this helps! And I hope you get your X!

man, i get the low feul light ALL the time on road trips.

if you drive for a while with it on, it will take something like 19.5 gallons of gas to fill up.

if you fill up when its close to empty, it takes closer to 14.5 gallons of gas.

the xterra is the best road trip truck! it just needs some more giddyup for those hills.

So far, a cold start squeal is about the norm, for me anyhow, I get it for a very short time after a good cold night. I find the X takes a bit of time to really warm up once its been sitting at -10C or below, so 5 minutes sounds about right, I had commenting on Sound, but at 2000K, you just started to break in the X. I actually find the X well suited for our winters.

While reviewing previous messages I remember someone complaining about a warped side mirror. Picked up my new se last week and noticed that the drivers side mirror was warped. The dealer ordered a new one which came in today. I went in to have it replaced and found the new one warped as well. The service foreman was going to take one off another new se on the lot but couldn't find one that wasn't warped. So if you buy a new xterra be sure to check the mirror, it's probably warped. The foreman said he will persue this problem with the factory and will get back to me. Hopefully he will. But even if he doesn't, I will say this. I have purchased a fair number of new vehicles in my day and it's been a long time since I was able to find nothing wrong but a piece of warped glass. Everything works great. No rattles or buzzes. Very solid and quiet. I love my new X.

Hey all, been a while since I posted, just catching up on some recent discussions.

For those who have a beef with the way the A/C always kicks in when using the defroster, I found a way to disable it:

    http://home.us.net/~stimpy/xterra/misc/defrost.txt

As for not letting the gas tank get low because of "sludge" that's bogus. Your fuel is drawn from the bottom of the tank anyway, so if there's anything settling out you're sucking it up when you first start, no matter how much gas is in there.

And for those that haven't discovered them yet, here are the 3 other major Xterra discussions out there:

"He brought you "Confessions Of a Car Salesman" to give you the inside story of his undercover work as a car salesman. For this chat, Chandler Phillips goes one-on-one with "The Cardinal", Dependable Dodge's own Marc Antonucci . Don't miss this battle of truths as these two give it to you straight."

If you haven't read Edmunds.com's confessions of a car salesman, I highly recommend you do so. I found it very entertaining, and yet enlightening as to what may go on in auto dealerships.

i guess mine is disabled already!! my A/C doesn't go on w/ the defroster!! i did read it in the manual, but it never happens!!

    pricing on my X:

had a '99 VW Passat on lease. had 36,000 miles on it in 18 months. payoff was just under $22k, dealer gave me $17k for it! ouch!!
2001 Xterra XE w/ 3pack, floor mats, moldings, mud flaps- price of $23,300
    $4000.00 out of pocket
    $581.06 a month!! double ouch!!

i'm getting married in Oct., she has a Honda on a loan, we're gonna consolidate loans through a bank, cut it by 10-20%, can't wait!!

99% your a/c is on during defrost.. but its stealth A/C... the light won't come on, so there isn't any real indication.. but if you're real good, you can feel the lug in your engine. The little mod will allow you to click on the A/C seperately, and "know" its on or off.
  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
Chettt99 - Just read your post. I was the original poster who warned about the warped driver's side mirror and mal-functioning fuel guage. The factory is aware of the defects and "is taking measures to minimize this from happening again."

At least that is the official word from Nissan when I called to report my dealership for poor service. The sales manager swore on his mother's grave that the mirror was fine, but it looked more like a carnival funny-mirror! Was very hard to see anything.

For those asking price, you can get a new '01, SE, 4X4, Auto with every option for under 25K if you do it correctly. Hint: Tell them you want to wait for the supercharged engine, but really are in love with the truck. Make it clear that you are experiencing inner-turmoil.

They will ask, "what can we do to make you purchase now?" Answer: "A price under 25K!" Use the "broken record technique" when they rephrase the purchase question in another way (and they will do this). Keep saying: "A price under 25K." Also, point out that the sunroof is worthless and you do not want it, but do want all the ammenities that come with the SE and will NOT settle for the 3-pack XE.

If they do not comply, walk out very slowly and drop your keys or fumble for your wallet awhile. Most will run after you to make the deal or call you back the next morning. If not, go elsewhere and do the same thing.

Try it and let me know what happens. I used to manage a dealership in undergraduate school and know the tricks. The sales manager had no clue I know the his sloppy angles and everything was scripted with my wife before we entered the dealership. We practiced for two hours before deal time.

If you have a significant other or a friend with you, start a fake fight in front of the sales manager to distract him/her and the staff. This takes onus off the sales price. While distracted, one of you should run for the bathroom crying and then you make the deal. Say: "My wife/husband will kill me, but I really want this truck, can you help me with a win/win situation now?"

Always find a imperfection with the vehicle and hold the dealership there late in the evening. At this point, they will make the deal just to get rid of you. You know you are the winner when the sales manager says: "you will never be happy with anything." Call that a victory!!!!! You do not want these people liking you. This is not a popularity contest. Rather, it is you against them.

Also, be sure to make them detail the truck before inside and out before you take it. Hope this is of help!
  • xcellenttrkxcellenttrk Member Posts: 61
did you go to acting school for that technique?? its pretty good, but i keep seeing in the newspapers here in NJ that they're selling '01 SE's for under $23k!!

I read the Edmunds article about working in a dealership that was mentioned to several posts back. It was very interesting, informative and amusing. Except now I feel really stupid. I actually believed my dealer when he told me the fish tank in the back was his own personal thing that he brought in because he found it very relaxing to watch the fish. But that's OK because he sold me my X for the best internet price I could find.
