The other day i was driving around in the woods when i saw a small shallow pond. Needless to say i had to venture in. Anyway, to make a long story short, i had to put the vehicle in 4lo to get out. As I was looking at the dash, i didn;t see any light on the dash or other indication that the truck was in 4lo. I don't know if i had never noticed or maybe i am not correctly engaging the 4WD lo but i have put the LC into this gear before and it drove like it was in 4LO. So if there is some light or something of the sort if you could please let me know!

1996 TLC with 84K on it now. The "BRAKE" indicator light is coming on occasionally. When it comes on and the Parking Brake is NOT engaged, the light is very dim, almost to the point that you can't see it if the sun is up. When I bought the machine, the Parking Brake was very slack, and if this problem existed, I did not notice it. I removed the console and tightened the lever up so it takes 9-12 clicks till it gets hard, but I can push it around in NEUTRAL when it is not engaged. Keep in mind that the parking brake indicator light switch lives under the console, too. Now, when the Parking brake is engaged, the "BRAKE" indicator light comes on bright. When it is disengaged, sometimes the light goes out immediately, sometimes not. Sometimes it comes on while driving later on, sometimes it goes off when driving later on. I.E., no discernable pattern. I removed the console again and made sure the parking brake lever was not still engaging the switch, which it is not, and then spayed the switch out with some WD40 and the compressed air to blow any trash out of it. When I reassembled the whole thing, the problem still exists. I read the owners manual and the BIG BOOK O' LAND CRUISER FIXIN that Toyota sells, and they didn't really address troubleshooting this too well. The manual said to check the fluid level, which I did, and it was above "MIN", but about 1/4 inch below "MAX". I remedied this to no avail. Anybody had this happen before and what wound up being the problem please. Talk to me, baby. Thanks.

There is no low range indicator on the '98 to '02 Landcruisers or the '91 to '97 Landcruisers. TO engage LR, stop the vehicle, put tranny in neutral, pull back the little knob to the right of the transmission lever, put lc in drive and there you go. 99% of the time, the center diff will automatically engage and there will be a light on the dash for that. The center diff engagement can be modified to only engage when the button is pushed.

my 1999 lx470 got 16mpg avg. fuel economy with a light foot. a heavy footed friend managed 12mpg with the same truck. remember to landCRUISE and you'll get about 19 on the hwy. off road in low range and high rpm netted me 6 mpg but that should be expected. i recommend the toyota over the lexus my lx had suspension and other problems.

I am experiencing an engine vibration under load at 60 to 70 mph (about 2300 rpm. Dealer says it's probably normal, but I don't think so, since it just started at about 10,000 miles and a couple months ago. Anyone out there experienced a similar vibration? If so, what's the problem?
I'd appreciate opinions, ideas, or, of course, a fix.
  • 2ktaadn2ktaadn Member Posts: 1
I have what sounds like a similar problem to Miakoda. I have a '99 TLC I bought used with 42k. I've put 10k on it and It's still in beautiful shape, except for a transmission "clunking" most noticeable starting and stopping. I've asked the local dealer twice to check it during routine service and they say no problem. What I'm noticing is probably a universal that's slightly worn. Seems unlikely to me with only 52k.
Can someone recommend a savvy dealer in Northern New England with perhaps more TLC experience?

'01 TLC here. At around 35K miles I too noticed a "knock" or "thump" when starting and stopping. And I do not hammer it when pulling out from a dead stop. Problem - slip yoke on driveshaft.
  • lpc68lpc68 Member Posts: 45
i have a '91 with 140K miles on it. i have the same problem. i was told by a land cruiser specialist that it was the drive shaft and that it is a very common problem with LCs. He said I could get it fixed but it would probably come back in time.
  • md2002md2002 Member Posts: 142
So if the drive shaft issue goes back to '91 or longer and if you repair it only to have it come back what is the real fix?

I mean allot of things you repair that are moving parts will eventually need repair at some point. Will the drive shaft issue cause major problems like breaking down at 2am on a rainy day?

I like the TLC and was shooting for a '00 off lease if I don't like the new '03 RUNNER when it comes out.
  • idahodougidahodoug Member Posts: 537
The brake light coming on dim is typically the in-cap sensor on the brake reservoir. I believe you can confirm this is the problem by disconnecting the wires to the cap which you've recently topped up. If the light goes out, order a new cap from Toyota.

As to the 'knock'. There is no chronic driveshaft problem in any LandCruiser as implied above. What it sounds like is the normal drivetrain slack that occurs when you have a full time 4WD vehicle. When you pull away from a stop, 8 CV joints, 2 differentials, 1 center transfer case and 2 drive shafts receive power and that's a lot of gears, and spinning stuff.

To minimize this feeling and the slack, be sure to keep the fluids in your front and rear diffs, your transfer case, and your transmission fresh and full and have your drive shafts lubricated regularly. Fail to do this and you'll have dry joints that create more vibration, more clunks, and you'll be in the shop one day for some serious money instead of a $50 chassis fluid and lube change. The truck even rides rougher with dry driveshafts as the above noted driveshaft slip joint has to move every time the suspension does.

Any words of wisdom as to who offers the best after market wood dash kits? How long does it take to add? Do they retain their initial look over time? Any help is appreciated!

I have a 2001 with NAV and live near Buffalo, NY. I often cross to Canada which displays as a great white ocean on the touchscreen. Does anybody know if there is any possibility of getting a DVD upgrade that would include the US and at least some part of Canada? If not, is it possible to purchase the US and Canada DVD's and switch between? How hard is it to upgrade the US map?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Since I initiated this discussion a few weeks ago, I thought I would update you on my experience at the Toyota dealership here in Central Florida. I took it in, had the tech ride around with me, and he knew immediately what it was. As menioned by several of you, the "knock" or "thump" is caused at the driveshaft slip joint (or, "yoke"). The tech at the dealership greased the joint, and the problem disappeared.

The only problem: it has been about 50 miles since the driveshaft joint was greased, and the thumping is ALREADY coming back (very faintly, but growing nevertheless)!

My tranny fluid was clean and still red when the tech checked it. Changing the diff may help this issue, but it seems unrelated to me. I suspect that after 1 or 2 more rounds of grease on the joint, the smoothness will be prolonged. I seem to have a lot of dirt that has collected in the area (from the prior owner of my 1998 TLC). Hope this helps.

Yeah, how about that WOOD KIT... Any suggestions on where to get a good flat burlwood kit forthe TLC? Thanks.

I thought Canada WAS just a big white ocean! Just joking. I couldn't resist. I don't know the full answer to your question, but you may want to talk to the parts department at your dealership. They can order the DVD upgrades and may have more info.
  • ravickravick Member Posts: 18
Try autoanything.com. Their prices are very competitive. I have never seen one of their actual kits, but from what I see on their web site, they look like good quality.

    Idahodoug,

Tried what you suggested and the light DID go out and remain out. I ordered a new cap for ~ $90. I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks.

I need to replace the rear window in my 1998 TLC. The glass looks brownish/bronze, however the dealer tells me that only green or gray are offered as replacement colors. Have any of you encountered this? Is GRAY in fact the correct color to order, although the factory tinted glass looks brownish? Thanks.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
Idahodoug, I thought you were a Mitsubishi man. When did you buy a Subaru?

BTW saupe130, a used cap would work just as well and probably cost next to nothing.

Saw a 2003 Japanese model 2003 TLC at this link:

The outside looks very similar to the current model. The dash is different.

Nice work Ibleave. Some of the colors on that website match up with Semantics list of colors for the 2003, so that is probably it. I am a bit relieved that there are no drastic changes from the 2002. Cool dash and grille though. Interesting rear entertainent center too that straps on to the passenger headrest supports.

Is that mirror on the front for parallel parking? I guess it's mandatory in Japan.
  • ibleaveibleave Member Posts: 13
    kjack100,

When I lived in Japan, almost all the cars had the front mirror and one in back too. They need them to navigate and park in those very tight spaces.

Will be interesting to see how many of the 2003 extras make way to the US.

I'm not too sure what I think about the 18" rims yet.

Replaced the brake cap on the Master cylinder and everything is wonderful in my world. I got a new one because I was too stupid to think of getting a used one. Live and learn, I guess, but that's why I have you guys. I can't afford to make all the possible mistakes myself -- not enough time or money!! Thanks for the input.

just stopped by the friendly neighborhood toyota dealer and they had just gotten brochures for the tlc 03 model. Not sure what the "standard feature" changes between 02 and 03 are, but here are the option packages:
    1. Roof rack and running board package
    2. Navigation System
    3. side impact airbags for front and second row
    4. 18" wheels

In the accessories section, they also have the rear-seat DVD entertainment system listed

I have a '01 TLC. I heard there is now a supercharger available made by Toyota Racing. Anyone have one on their TLC? Only reason I ask is that I tow a 4500lbs boat/trailer and would benefit from the hp/torque gain, especially at highway speeds. I was also wondering how loud the supercharger whine is? I heard a 1st generation charger on a 4Runner and it was loud. Are there any potential mechanical problems that could develop later on down the line if I put one on mine?

I have driven my 2001 Land Cruiser for 11000 miles and never heard a warning sound when the parking brake was on and the car turned on until just last week. It is a high frequency beep. Anyone else have a warning sound for the parking brake or is this a malfunction; the truck works fine otherwise. Not sure why it would start sounding after 11000 miles. Thanks for any response on this.

I have gone to two Toyota Dealers (part departments) inquiring about hitches. I've been quoted prices anywhere from $450 to (believe it or not) $1000 for the hitch (labor is extra). At one dealer I was told there is only on hitch for the 2002 TLC (at $1000) at another I was told there are more (they recommended a low profile class III/IV hitch). Needless to say, this isn't real clear. So, for those of you who have Toyota hitches, which one do you think I should buy (class III)?

Second question, if I purchased a 7/75 Platinum warranty and want to now get a 7/100 one, is it a matter of cancelling one and purchasing the other or is there an upgrade path?

Also, do you ever get something from Toyota validating the warranty purchase?

Finally, the dash (speedo, tach, etc) seems very dim at night and the intensity dial doesn't seem to help much. Is this normal?
  • hicairahicaira Member Posts: 276
Re the hitches; do not go to a dealer unless you want to spend the extra $$. Hidden Hitch makes a class III for the LC that costs about $180. There are many places that will install them for less than $50, including the wiring harness adapter. Shop around. Check the yellow pages under trailers and rentals. Most places that rent trailers also sell and install hitches. Unless you plan on towing more than 5000# on a regular basis there is no reason to get a class IV (LC is only rated to 6500# and that INCLUDES all the stuff you pack in the car).

Can't help you on the warranty question. "Why bother" is my first inclination. It's not like you bought a Saab or Chrysler.

Fuse may be out on that dimmer switch. Regardless, have dealer check.

    All the best,

    HiC
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The warranty question is an easy one to answer, but you're not going to like the answer. The only way to do it is to cancel the 7/75K warranty and get a pro-rated refund and then purchase the 7/100, which isn't cheap. The only way to make this less painful is to find a dealer who is willing to send in a cancellation request that is back dated to say... three months after you bought it. That can be done and it will minimize your losses.

Yes, you should have received a warranty package from Toyota if you paid for the warranty. Call 800-228-8559 which is the number for the Toyota VSA customer service center. They can look it up to make sure your dealer sent in the appropriate application.

    hicaira, cliffy1,

    Thanks for the feedback.

cliffy1 - regarding the warranty, what is the benefit of purchasing a Toyota extended warranty earlier in the 3yr/36K mil factory warranty period vs. later?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The only reason to buy now rather than later is price. Often, you can negotiate a better price than if you traipse in with only 1000 miles left on your standard warranty. Some dealers recognize that you have little choice but to take their price at that point.

Please advise me as to the best sites to get info on installing a dual battery setup in my 97 TLC. I have done some research and I see some setups with a marine style switch both with and without a solenoid, and also a combiner system without the marine style switch. Please advise.

Can someone help me with this? When removing the spare mounted under the vehicle, the owner's manual calls for a jack handle assembly to be put together so that the end that is inserted in through the hole in the rear bumper has a hook at the end. However, there is nothing at the other end to interface with this hook. When the handle is turned as instructed, nothing happens. I'm wondering if my LC is possibly missing a part in the funnel-like piece that is shown in the manual.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
Not sure to which model Land Cruiser you are referring, but for the 60 and 80 series, there is a slot in the spare tire winch for the hook end. Slide the hand crank assembly in at a slight downward angle, and peer in the whole to look for the slot. I find it easier to leave out at least 1 of the connecting rods.

I have seen some CD players from the 98 and newer cruisers on e-bay. They appear to be the double din size-- will they work?
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
JVC makes a double DIN, 3-in-1 unit that fits. Bypass the factory amp and replace the speakers while you're at it.

I just bought a 2000 LC that has Lexus 470 wheels. Does anyone know where I can buy Toyota logo center caps for these wheels?
  • ibleaveibleave Member Posts: 13
I read, in a previous message, about a gas pedal vibration in some TLCs. I have a 2002 (with very few miles) and the gas pedal vibrates when the TLC is accelerating and sometimes under steady speed -- it's more like a buzz (a very fast vibration). Kinda feels somewhat like the hi/lo shifter but not as much.

Was there (or is there) a fix or is this "just the way it works?"

Any of you other TLC owners experiencing this too?
  • ravickravick Member Posts: 18
joeeblow1, thanks for the input. I will check it out this weekend.
  • mkwamemkwame Member Posts: 21
mke3, The 98-02 tlc center caps will not fit the 98-02 lx470 The tlc wheel center hubs are much larger than those on the lx. I used to have a set of lx wheels for my 99 tlc, I ended up selling it on ebay and purchase 4 set of tlc wheels on ebay.
You should be able to buy a set of 98+ tlc wheels for under $300 on ebay.

Is the "Glass Breakage Sensor (GBS)" an option for the 2002 Land Cruiser? If so, what's the list price and availability?

There was a footnote with the GBS of: available for vehicles with factory security.
