I got a good deal at Ron Norris Honda in Titusville, FL. Went through the internet sales person (John Dunn) and got a fair price quote on the first e-mail. Still got the same price when I showed up in person - LOL.

I paid $17,550 (including the dealer fee), plus tax/tag/title. Very satisfied with the experience and with the car, so far. Have only had it for a week, knock on wood.

Today was the 1st day looking at Honda's for my daughter. Initially was looking for the most basic Civic with A/C. Went to the dealer and got the following deal which I thought was really good but now after seeing some of the LX pricing I am wondering. Were there special rebates in place for the 1st quarter ending??? They only have low financing now... FYI I have no trade in and my own financing.

    My Deal
    2009 Civic DX-VP Auto = 16,000 +TTL + 240 dealer fee
Negotiated all of the following items to be added to the price for free
    Paint Guard - 5yr
    Upholstery Guard - 5 yr
    Window Tint - Lifetime
    Mudflaps
    Nitrogen in tires
    Trunk Tray
I know most of that is worthless and thats why I refused to pay for it.

Please help I would like to buy a Civic for my daughter birthday on Friday.

    Hi,

16000 for a DX is too much. As you indicate, people are getting LXs for that. Adding worthless, high margin, stuff doesn't help. As far as I can see, the incentives are the same now as in March. Rather than rebates, Honda likes to give "incentives" to the dealers--for the LX it's $500. My advice: give your daughter a "card" that says you'll get her a car--and tell this dealership--or another--to forget those "extras--and buy the LX for the same 16,000. Good Luck
  • bill9902bill9902 Member Posts: 20
Agreed on all counts. The LX has some nice features that are worth having, and 16k is too much for a DX. Definitely skip the list of "add-ons." The "Paint Guard" is high margin wax. Go to the store and buy some wax and do it yourself, or have your daughter help you -- as a pride of ownership sort of thing. The only "extra" on your list that is really worth having (IMO) is the trunk tray, which a dealer should be willing to throw in to get the deal done anyway.

If the first dealer you visit doesn't do what you want, go to another dealer. In this market, buyers have the upper hand (within reason, of course) and you may have to shop around. Don't cave to a dealer that is trying to charge you substantially more than others -- this is an economic time when businesses that meet customer needs with good service will succeed, and the rest may not.

16K +TTL +Fee is waaay too much for a civic DX-VP. I am also looking to buy a civic and for a few weeks have tracked the prices paid by other people posted in this forum. If it helps you, here is a quick summary of what others have paid for 2009 Civic Sedan LX automatic in the last month:

    ..Date......State....OTD Price
    11-Mar......NC......$17,500
    16-Mar......TX......$17,900
    28-Mar......---.......$17,500
    29-Mar......IL.......$17,600
    29-Mar......DE......$17,000
    30-Mar......CA......$17,250
    31-Mar......NC......$16,682

These are Out-The-Door (OTD) prices, i.e., the final purchase price *including* destination, TTL, dealer fees, doc fees, etc etc. Each state has different sales tax on the price of the vehicle that is why I've listed that info so you can add/subtract for your location.

    Here are few additional pointers:
    (a) Visit the dealer to test drive the car, but not to negotiate the price
    (b) Do not tell them you are going to pay cash, or have your own financing, it reduces your negotiating position because dealer then has no *hope* of making money on financing
    (c) negotiate with their internet department - by email
    (d) shop around with all area dealers by emailing anyone within 200 miles!

    Good luck~

Which is the reason I ended up buying mine at IGH. My salesman was very good at Walser, but they wouldn't work with me on the price. Their loss, as I paid a lot more for my EX in September than people are paying locally now!

Thanks for all the great info about the DX and LX. Right now I have 2 dealers fighting it out. Looks like I'm closer to an LX, Auto
    It breaks down like this:
    Price w/dest 16,600.00
    Sales Tax 1,037.50
    Inv Tax 36.02
    Document Fee 50.00
    Tittle,reg,insp 132.55

    Total 17,856.07
(with free paint, fabric, wheel locks, splash guard and trunk tray)
    What do you think???

In Dallas I found it impossible to find a car without dealer add-ons. (checked 6 dealers). With that said this was my deal:
    2009 Civic LX, auto
    16700 including dest charge
17953 OTD including 6.25% sales tax
The dealer options were paint/upholstery protection, trunk mat, mud flaps, painted pin stripes, painted door edge guards, wheel locks, lifetime tint, lifetime car wash (5 miles from house;). I would have preferred not having all the dealer installed items and a cheaper price but I just could not find it.

My dealer was David McDavid Honda of Frisco Tx. Internet salesman was JP 903-818-9188. He's a very nice & straight guy to deal with.

An ever better guy to deal with but was farther away was Roland Mueller Huggins Honda 817-938-1985. He started the ball rolling and gave me the price everyone had to beat. He was SO perfect I feel guilty not buying from him.

I would avoid Honda of McKinney Texas at all cost. Very old school high pressure / good cop bad cop / bait and switch. They had me sign a non-binding commitment BEFORE they would talk price and another non-binding refundable deposit to hold the deal overnight. Now I have to make another trip to that dealer to get my credit card refunded. Thanks again for saving me from that place!

I am looking for a Civic LX auto in the Seattle area. The best price quote I have is $17200 +tax, and this does NOT include any dealer options. Reading the recent posts here, the price appears to be VERY high. Can anyone in Seattle area or WA state share the price they paid recently for a Civic LX?
  • dhightowerdhightower Member Posts: 9
Im not sure location matter too much about the price. You could try shooting an email that say something like this.

"I am shopping for a new 2009 Civic and I plan to visit my chosen dealership at xxx time today. I have no trade-in, do not need a test drive and would like this make this transaction as simple as possible for both of us.

My preferred Civic is the LX with Auto. Over the last 10 days the LX model has been purchased at various dealerships for 15,700, 16,000, 16,500, 16,600, 16,600 (including delivery). If we can get to these numbers and find a unit without the dealer add-ons I will buy the vehicle this afternoon.

Please contact if you would like to discuss further. "

    This is what i used.

    Hi

I am a first-time buyer and I am currently offered an OTD price of 25K for a 2009 Honda Civic EX-L w/ NAV and 23k for a 2009 Honda Civic EX-L w/o NAV. I am buying in the Washington state (not Washington DC). I was wondering if some1 can give me an idea on whether this is a horrible/bad/ok/good/awesome deal.

    Thanks in advance.

Just picked up a new Si coupe for 20000 OTD.
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
$25K OTD price for civic EX-L with navigation seems way too high. Its like dealer selling you the car at max retail price & some! The MSRP for 2009 civic EX-L with Navigation is $21,305 and invoice is $19,616 plus destination $670, TTL etc. And if you search the forum here you'll find that people are getting $2000 to $3000 off the MSRP with 20 to 21K OTD because there are not many shoppers in the market for civic's high end model considering you can get an accord LX for $20K OTD. Good luck

Thats a very nice letter. Thanks dhightower for posting it here for all and congrats on your new civic. I agree the Honda Cars of McKinney uses the age old dealer gimmicks of bait and switch. Several years ago I helped a friend buy a civic and McKinney Honda would not talk price to us without a $500 deposit, then they changed the terms of the deal when actually got to the dealership. I hear McDavid Honda in Irving is worse, not sure if you contacted them and what was your experience with them. Anyway, congrats on the new civic.

Oh man, I didn't realize my offer was so bad. I say this because the link below shows a person asking for a 2009 Honda Civic EXL w/o NAV for 21.8k. Of course my current offer w/o NAV is 23k so it's higher, but I read others comment that his deal is good, so I thought mine was at least OK. Plus I asked around and dealers typically say the built-in GPS is about 2k on top, so that's why I thought the 25K = 23K + 2K was reasonable.

    http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.eea7241/8182!keywords=allin%3Amsgt- ext%20limit%3A.eea7241%20exl#8182

But anyways, I didn't come across any posting for ppl getting the 2009 Civics EX-L w/ Nav for 20k or 21k. If you have come across any posting on that, can you please let me know?

    Thanks.

    Hello:

I just wanted to give you my info. I am located in Maryland (6% sales tax) and I purchased the 2009 Honda Civic EX-L with Navi Automatic Sedan on Feb 19, 2009. This price including the destination charge was $20677. My OTD price was $22,245. I financed about 10K with Honda (2.9%). My price included some appearance package that put on all their cars at the dealership I purchased from (mudflaps, door edge guards and wheel locks).

I am not sure anymore this is a good deal because I saw somebody posting recently that they were getting quotes $3000 below invoice on the EX-L's.... So maybe someone else will respond who has bought more recently with updated pricing info.

    Anyway, hope that helps you!

I paid $20200 OTD for EX-L auto (w/o NAV) in IL. The selling price was about $18630. No extras on the car.

I cannot recommend Brian Bemis, the dealer I used in DeKalb since my buying experience was bad. But Valley Honda was offering the same deal.

    Matre128,

You said you bought a 2009 EX with AT for under $17K. Would you mind saying where? Has anyone else been able to buy a ("basic") EX for about $17K, including destination BUT NOT including state stuff such as tax, license fees, etc.
    I'm especially interested in Massachusetts.

    thanks

Your welcome. It was your reply with the summary of recent purchases that helped me create it. I did a Honda dealer search on cars.com and then did a copy / paste on the dealer pop up area. In about 10 minutes I had emailed 10 dealers in the Dallas /Fort Worth area. Within 5 minutes I started getting replies and calls. I did get a question from a dealer on where I got the information. My reply was "Why is that important". He quickly backed off.

After thinking about this I wanted to pass along some other things I did that seemed to work
*Do 95% of your negotiation via email, phone before going in person.
*When you are 90% there and have resolved the purchase price, delivery and options price shift to the absolute final OTD price. - this will eliminate last minute surprises that some dealers hide.
*Get your poker face on - Don't ever look happy / excited and coach other people with you do the same thing. - They want to get your emotions involved.
*Don't think their questions are just conversation. They are trained to ask everything for a reason to promote them closing or getting a better deal for the dealer. Think carefully before replying or just don't reply.
*Ask them for a few minutes to talk with others (over the phone or sitting with you) - This seemed to take the salesmen off their game and allow you to work together as a team.
*If your being bullied, being played (bad cop good cop / bait and switch) or asked to sign any promise before the deal is done just walk away.

In these economic times you have an unbelievable amount of leverage. Don't be afraid to use it.

I got the 09 EX-L for 20,750 OTD on 1/16/09. I don't know what the price of the car was since I was only concerned with the out the door price and not any random fees and charges. It was pretty easy to tell the dealers I didn't care what the "price" of the car was; this enabled us to discuss the price without worrying about individual line items.

The only buyer's remorse I'm having is wishing I paid $500 more and went with the Si!

I live in the orlando, fl area and i am looking to purchase a 4dr Honda Civic Lx-s or Ex Automatic. I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the best OTD price is at the dealers for either of these veh's.
  • jaduboijaduboi Member Posts: 2
I was quoted $16,750 for a Civic LX Coupe AT, including destination charge.
And I was also offered 3.9% promotional interest rate.
It's $18,000 OTD with 8.25% tax, documents, title, and etc.
Is it good price for a basic Civic LX Coupe AT in North Cal?
I'll be signing the paper tomorrow since my car is broken down and I need a new car as soon as possible.
    Please help!

Page 413 has listed what everyone has been paying for the LX Auto OTD. What is unknown is the dealer installed options that were on those cars, state and local fees. My dealer said the package on my car cost them $699 and they sold me the car for 16,700. Other dealers told me their cost was around 16,800. I'm not sure where the $500 dealer incentive comes into play. Maybe the actual price is in the $16,300 neighborhood?

I would like to buy a Civic coupe EX auto or LX auto in Dallas. Can you help me with prices and dealers?

My research on this site reveals that since 1/1/09 the price for EXs (auto) ranges from $17,900-18,737 + TTL. LXs (auto) range from $15,925-16,750 + TTL.
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
If there are no dealer add on included with the car then you have have about $500 to $750 room in price. By dealer add-ons I mean wheel locks, splash/mud guards, pin stripe, paint & fabric protector, trunk tray etc. It cost the dealer about $300 but they add retail price of $700 for these add ons to the price of the car. Good luck in your search. Up until last week Honda was offering $500 incentive to dealers which should help reduce the price for you. Considering that you are car-less right now, a $17.5K out the door price would be a great price to seal the deal. Good luck, and let us know tomorrow how it all paned out.
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
Thanks again for the pointers about negotiating with the dealer, and its nice to know that we are all able to help each other out!
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
If you are referring to my message #8233 posted this weekend about OTD prices for civic LX AT, these are based on the price of the vehicle alone with no dealer installed options. As you have correctly noted in your post many times dealers install the add-on to increase the price of the vehicle by the retail value of these add-ons. So add the retail value of the dealer add-ons to the prices I had listed in the earlier post. The $500 dealer incentive is the extra amount Honda is offering to the dealers to sell each civic. This should help lower the purchase price of the vehicle.
  • jal1960jal1960 Member Posts: 2
Send an e-mail to Ron Norris Honda in Titusville. Its not too far from O-town and they'll give you an "OTD" price via e-mail. I bought my Civic EX coupe there last week. The price they quoted in the e-mail was the price I paid when I went in. If nothing else, it will give you a benchmark for the local dealers.

Hi, between 2 offers right now - Civic LX-S (no other options) for 16,700 (do not have the exact #'s with me). Also including a trunk organizer. The other option is a 2009 Hybrid, with beige leather and nothing else extra, for under $20K (I think 19,850). Both include all costs less taxes and TTL. Dealer in PA.

I have a 65 mile commute each way so maybe the Hybrid is the better deal? I have followed a lost of thse posts and $20K with leather seems like a good deal to me. 3.9 percent financing also.

    Thank you all so much!
  • dhightowerdhightower Member Posts: 9
Every dealer in Dallas had the dealer installed option for above list price. The worst of all was Honda of McKinney. They listed Mud Flaps @ $500, Tray @ 500, Tint @ 500, EPP @ 500, Nitrogen @ 50

When I refused to pay they showed me a book with copies of other dealers add-ons. They were about 50% less than their exact same add-ons. I laughed because they were trying to prove to me that I would not find another dealer without them. In the process they proved that their dealership was the top price gouger in the DFW area.

Oh, and if a dealer wants to charge you for nitrogen then RUN. Air is 78% nitrogen and there are multiple web sites proving nitrogen in tires is a scam.
  • jmraz73jmraz73 Member Posts: 9
not a good deal. I got $16,499 including destination.
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
Both are good prices as they represent a couple grand below invoice for LX-S and Hybrid. But you can also bargain for more. To your question about which car is a better option, it depends on how much you drive and how long (in miles) you want to keep the car.

If you get hybrid your OTD price will be about $3600 more than what you'll pay for LX-S OTD. Hybrid give only 9 extra MPG on higway vs. LX-S. Using an average fuel price of $2.7 for full year, it will take you 60,000 miles on hybrid to break-even (to get your $3600 back). If the fuel prices go up you'll breakeven before 60k miles.

Another way to look at it is, with 130 mile commute each work day + some more on the weekend, it will take you 18 months to breakeven/recoup the extra money you spent on the hybrid purchase. After that hybrid will save you money up until you have to replace the batteries. I do not know at what mileage exactly batteries have to be replaced. All I know is that this costs several ks and comes due sometime after 100K miles.
  • jonnymojonnymo Member Posts: 5
Thank you. How can I bargain for more? Sorry but I am not great at this. I am most interested in the hybrid. I think the MSRP is $25, sale price under $20K not including tax and tags. Leather only add-on. Love any help you can provide. It's black with beige leather. What do you think of that combination? Should I ask for more add-ons or lower price? Not sure how much lower they will go.

    Thank you.

The dealer will lower the price if he knows doing that will result in a completed sale. I’ve seen black with beige leather on Acura TL and it looked elegant with clean fresh look. The price quote you have for civic hybrid is already very good. Before you make your final offer to the dealer to seal the deal, ask him to give you the out the door price based on their offer of $19.8 sale price of car w/destination. If you finalize only the price of vehicle and not the OTD price, it will leave room for the dealer to add doc fee, fleet fee etc worth hundreds of dollars to pad their margin. Which of course you don’t want. See post # 8249 above from ‘dhightower’ about this. Once you have an OTD price, then you can make you final offer to dealer for either lower price (say, $500 less) or some extras like mud flaps, vin etching, wheel locks, etc.

As to which is better? See the post above about retail prices of some dealer options. Dealers usually overcharge you on these things. For example: The mud flaps w/installation that dealers sell for $300 to $500 (see post above), you can buy online/amazon for $50 and install yourself.

Based on the $19.8 sale price of car, your total OTD should be around $21,300 (includes tags, 6% PA sales tax, and some doc fee). You can then tell the dealer that you will buy the car right away if he can do $20,800. After some haggling, you will likely end up with $20,900 final price.

I will not recommend the dealer I used after my buying experience there. Valley Honda was giving me the same deal on EX-L auto and they had quoted about $21000 for Hybrid.

The selling price for the EX-L I bought was $18631 and the sales tax was $1253. Apparently there was a $1250 dealer cash.
  • pvanmanpvanman Member Posts: 10
Yes, the rebate is done, so is the 2.9/3.9 financing too.
  • samgreensamgreen Member Posts: 13
Not true. According to Edmunds, Honda continued its low financing offers and marketing incentives. While technically not a rebate, most dealers treat them as such---and it's the same as March. If Edmunds is correct, the dealer is wrong--or is splitting hairs like a politician.
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
I don't know about the rebate but the 2.9 / 3.9 is still available according to Honda:

I bought a 2009 Honda Civic LX Sedan (Automatic) in Minneapolis on April 8, 2009.

Stopped at Luther Brookdale Honda last week to just look because I still hadn't decided yet which vehicle I was going to buy. Over the weekend, I decided on the Civic. Stopped back at Brookdale for the second time (4/7/2009) and told the salesperson that I was going to purchase a vehicle on 4/8/2009, but was going to visit the other Honda Dealerships in the area and would return later for a test drive.

Went to Buerkle Honda and looked at the colors with a sales associate. He told me that the cost would be in the low-17s.

Next stop was Richfield-Bloomington Honda. Sat down with a salesperson and five minutes later she told me I could get it for $16,597.

Went back to Luther Brookdale Honda and took a test drive. Sat with the sales associate and told her about my experiences at the other places. Told her that I was quoted $16,600 and she went to check with her manager. She came back and said that $16,600 was a very "aggressive" price and that she could match it, but that the price was good for only today. I reiterated that I was going to buy a car tomorrow and not today. She then told me that the price was good for the next day too. This "pressure" to buy the same day didn't make me very happy.

After returning home, I requested online e-quotes from Honda House in St. Cloud ($16,600) and Inver Grove Honda ($16,388).

The next day (4/8/2009) I called Richfield Bloomington Honda and spoke to the salesperson. Told her I wanted to buy the Civic, but that I was just looking for the best price. She asked me what amount would get me into the dealership to buy the car from her. My reply was $15,800 and she said she would call me back. Several minutes later she called back and said $16,100 (incl destination fee) was the best she could do. SOLD. If you want a good experience, see Carmen at Richfield Bloomington Honda!!!
