Really? How much lower do you think it could be????
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
Great price for Florida actually...paid more back in '06 but that was a more difficult time to buy a car. Since the price of petrol has halved, some great bargains out there Still love my Civic but the competition is getting very fierce. Bought an Accent and a Versa within the last four months and they're very good cars for the price also.
It's really a great time to purchase now if one has the $...glad we did,

The deal just keeps getting better. I'm now at 17,800 OTD for the LX-S. I'm ready to buy but each time I call a dealer to tell them thanks but no thanks they lower the price.
  • lancelotglancelotg Member Posts: 12
Does 16.4K include destination fee? if yes, then the price is reasonable for me.
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    Sht man,

That price is 700 bucks lower than mine. If that's a flat OTD you should seal the deal man. :P
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
Yea and about 2k less than my lousy dea from Dec 08! But tax is diff. in states; mine was 1400.00

    imagine no tax!

I have completed the purchase of the Civic LX-S AT. Hopefully the details below will help someone.

I live in SC and sent out requests for internet quotes to eleven Honda dealers within about a two hour driving radius. Initial quotes varied by as much as $2K. One dealer actually quoted me OTD that was above the MSRP. The moral here is get lots of quotes. It's currently a buyers market.

The list of dealers was quickly reduced to about five after a few phone calls. Of the five remaining dealers I sent my lowest quote to four of them and explained exactly what car I wanted included color and that I was ready to buy if they had the color I wanted and could beat the price of the attached quote from the other dealer. After about two days of dealers responding with lower and lower offers I zeroed in on a dealer that had the actual car on his lot and closed the deal.

Data that helped me was the Consumer Reports New Car Price Service. It costs only $14 and I highly recommend it. For the Civic LX-S AT the report details are:
    19,525 MSRP
    17,947 Dealer Invoice
17,570 Bottom line Price (includes allowances for dealer incentive and hold back)

    Details for my purchase were:
    17,126 price including destination charge
    25 tag transfer fee
    300 tax (SC maximum)
    199 document fee

    17,650 OTD price

    Good luck with your shopping.

P.S. I financed through Honda. The rep. was fairly pushy trying to sell the extended warranty which I declined.

Thanks Fred, that helps. I too am looking at an LX-S. I have tried the online quote approach and have two dealers at invoice less the $500 incentive and including destination. Looks like I can probably get a few hundred more out of the deal. Thanks for the data points.

Here are the quotes I got:
    Honda Civic EX: $18,398
    Mazda 6 i touring: $19,450+$1250(sunroof)=20,650 ( I like sunroof)
What would you choose based on the performance of the cars and their prices?
    Thanks.
  • lancelotglancelotg Member Posts: 12
    hey, fred_durst,
Could you tell us the name of the dealer you bought your car?

    thanks!
  • jb949701jb949701 Member Posts: 3
    The deal I got was

    $17,764 (including destination charge)
    $298 doc fee
    $76 xfer plates
    $602.50 MA sales tax (I got $5714 for a trade in - tax was on $17764 - $5714 = $12050)
  • tjchintjchin Member Posts: 12
I have a question about a fee that was included in my quote. It is listed as:

    bus. lic. fee = $20.00

Not a huge fee, but nonetheless, if its a bogus fee would prefer not to pay it.

Does anyone have experience with buying a car in Virginia?

As an aside, this forum is such a great resource!!

    Thanks to all.
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    I see now

I live in TX, here sales tax isn't max 300 but is 6.25%

That's why your price is so low ;)
  • vegashomesvegashomes Member Posts: 24
Am I allowed to ask the name of the dealer?
  • tjchintjchin Member Posts: 12
Does this sound good? Or, try to push lower?

    20,650 + tax + tags/title + proc fee = OTD = $22,220

    Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

TAX bites! Tax is 7.75 here and it ate away at any sort of deal

You ALL might google this but Congress has recently made both the sales tax AND the interest on the car loans a tax deduction !!!!

I am waiting for someone to slip it back in !! Then it would make sense to get auto financing.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Actually this article says it is much more (deadly) serious!!

..."Annual U.S. car sales of 10 million to 11 million will make it extremely difficult for any auto companies to eke out a profit. That could mean a lot more financial pain for General Motors and Chrysler, which have both taken billions in government loans and are now asking for billions more. ...

...The lone provision to survive is similar to the deleted loan interest provision: It allows car buyers this year to deduct sales taxes from their income tax bill. Analysts questioned its ability to spur sales. ...

...The sales slump in the United States is not threatening only the American auto companies. Automakers in Japan and across Europe are seeking billons in aid from their governments, partly to cope with the steep drop off in the United States. "...

    link title

So reasonable BUT extremely rhetorical questions are:

    1. : do we want the US market yearly sales levels @ 10-11 M ?

    2. or one of the worst scenarios go lower than 10-11 M?

    3. or back up @ 16.5 M ?

    4. or give more bail out money ?

    5. or... let the big four go.... bankrupt?

As they get their grapes peeled, seemingly they are saying : let em (us peasants) not be able to deduct the loan interest.

Keep in mind the MOST profitable cars are not selling !!!! So if most if the cars they have been selling are NOT profitable and the PROFITABLE ones are either not selling or selling at little to no profit.....

ah, call in the rocket scientists!!!!

Being as how this is a Honda thread, which many will say is really an AMERICAN car hosted by Japanese money, it isnt like Honda's are selling at MSRP + !!!??

I have got a lowest quote of $16,488 (including destination charges) + title + tax. I am from SF bay area, tax will be 1442 (8.75%), final OTD $18,190.

Is this a good deal? or should it be lower than this.

    Thank you all.
  • jb949701jb949701 Member Posts: 3
Last week, I got an internet quote of $16,198 for an LX 4DR AT (this inlcuded destination charge of $670). This was from a dealer in Massachusetts. Other quotes I got on LX 4DR ATs were in the $16,500 range though. So I think you could probably get them to go lower, at least it's worth a try.

I ended up buying an EX from the same dealership that gave me the $16,198 quote on the LX. The final price for the EX was about $300 less than the first internet quote they gave me.

    Good Luck

Indeed !! Honda remains a "subset". Now you would think they (i.e., subset Honda) would be absolutely salivating at the so called extra business, but even the BIG OEM's (ie,Toyota) has report not only HUGE sales/percentage declines. They also have reported a corp loss which they have NOT reported in a VERY long time. It is also becoming obvious Honda uses the same vendors as literally the big three. And they certainly buy a whole lot less viagra than your first link

Bought my car in MD and wanted to give back to community to help future buyers:

    Base: 20677 (including freight)
    6% MD tax, tags, title
    $100 doc fee

OTD =$22,245 (including mudguards, door guards, and wheel locks)
Thinking about buying lojack. May not be correct place to post but if anyone had recently bought lojack from a dealer, could you please let me know what you paid.

    Thanks

I am being offered an LX-S at invoice less the $500 incentive. How much more is there to be had?
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
I'd be seriously tempted at 1000 below invoice. The $500 incentive (total $1500) would send the pencil sharpening session into over drive. See if you can combine it with a killer APR as it seems to be @ 2.9 % for 24-36 mo ! Or... just wait ! It is truly early in the 2009 season yet! All the best !
  • lucky15lucky15 Member Posts: 72
Just purchased today, the car stickered for $22,400, invoice was $20,500,(they wouldn`t go lower than invoice), got options of mudflaps, air deflector, fog lights, and body side moulding, these options on top of invoice was $21,127. I had a Hyundai XG350L with 21000 miles as trade, it KBB for $6000.00, they gave me $7500.00 for it or $1500.00 over book, the difference being $13,627, I then put $5000.00 down on it and brought it down to $8,627.00, then added $431.00 in sales tax at 5% and $185.00 in fees(doc, license, title)and 2.9% interest on principle which brought the total to $9500.00, financed for 36 months at $276.02 per month. I went into detail here because working with a trade-in is an altogether different ball game than buying one outright, I hope this helps someone in a similiar situation. PS--They had the audacity while we were in the business office to sign the papers, of playing a cd on a monitor explaining why we should buy an extended warranty for $800.00, I told the business manager to turn it off, I was not interested and he still tried to sell me on it, I was really starting to get mad and then he backed off, obviously he was trying to get a commission on it. Buying a car is a real pain in the xxxx sometimes.
  • lancelotglancelotg Member Posts: 12
just bought it at 17700 OTD price (includes 3% tax, 74 tag fee)

I have option of either 17200 for LX and 17700 for LXS.

Why would a store take a loser deal on a popular car?

Business isn't THAT bad! We don't need to lose money to sell cars!
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Jan 09 Civic sales are off - minus 32.4 % from Jan 08?????? :surprise: :confuse:

I got the Civic below that! They wanted to sell, I wanted to buy! I wanted a cash deal, they convinced me of the error of my thinking! They didn't tell me how much they made! At that time, the economic conditions were no where NEAR what they are today 2009 !

Evidently the WSJ either didnt interview you, or the stats they have are bogus! link title

I really don't need to tell anybody, especially you, the Civic is one of the top vehicles (in its segment) !!! I certainly bought one over a Corolla of the same year! All the best !
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I see...so business is off so it's smart to lose money now?

But 1000.00 below invoice? Don't think so!
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
That would not be my take.

..."But 1000.00 below invoice? Don't think so! "...

Another would be: I do not know how sales @ 1k under invoice fits in the overall scheme of things. However, even if you were able to sell all your cars at MSRP, -minus 30% plus DECREASE in sales would have to have some impact.

So for example, while Toyota Corolla/Matrix seems to show one of the least (-7.2%) % losses of sales, Toyota USA Corp reported its first loss (overall) in MANY years.

Conversely GM, Ford and Chysler sold their SUV's/P/U truck segments at (what I have read) 10-15k profit per vehicle !!! Anyone who doesn't have a clue what trouble they are in, probably has just checked onto the planet.

If you think that's bad you should see what some are posting in the Fit forum, now those are truly amazing :)
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
We are all in this economic mess together and I guess it bothers me that some people seem to almost enjoy it by thinking we are so desperate we should be willing to grovel in the dirt and take any loser offer that comes along.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Exactly why I usually stay out of forums like that. Not good for my blood pressure.

Besides, some people are "over enthusastic" in their claims of what they actually paid. Hard to bite my tongue sometimes! :confuse:
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
OK, I went to the Fit Prices Paid Forum and I had a lot of trouble but I managed to refrain from jumping in. Wasn't easy.... ;)
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Again that might be your take, but it is not mine. Mine is IF one needs/wants/ or probably more importantly can afford a new car, NOW is a buyers market. Doing ones' homework has always (well my take is SHOULD be) been a HUGE part of the process. The American buying public is really indicating (which WSJ wrote about in the linked article) that a LARGE minority (37-40%) of the usual yearly buying public is NOT buying NEW for whatever reasons.

    (Good year: 16.5 to 17 M vehicles vs a projected 10 M or -6.5 M to -7M)
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I understand but the sky isn't falling to the point a dealer will lose money selling what is still a popular car.

I know some people are rubbing thier hands together with glee.
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
Sat in a new EX at the dealer this morning...very nice fabric on the seats and door panels...much better then my '06 LX. But besides that, the little changes hardly are worth me trading in my under 20k vehicle. (Had a stupid moment where I thought I'd trade the '06 in to get a LX-S model. Stupid idea!) :confuse:

Did sit in the new '09 Fit though and don't really see what the hype is all about actually. My kids Versa is a much more comfortable car with a more useable back seat. The dash had a poor design compared with the Civic...just don't get it. Think I'll just keep my '06 for another 5 to 6 years.

    The Sandman :)
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Well then you are in luck. I don't need another Honda Civic @ the moment! ;)
  • dofferdoffer Member Posts: 16
Not sure what part of the country you're requesting quotes, but in northern California, I've inquired about a similar vehicle and the quotes I received were approximately:

    $22,300 + tax and license of $1,733 + document fees $325 = $24,358 out-the-door

Sounds like the quote you received is pretty good. Not sure if there are any rebates or incentives that could be applied to lower it even more.
  • anjinggilaanjinggila Member Posts: 1
They quoted me for 18000 (destination charge included) before Tax. Is this a good deal? How much lower can I get them go down?
  • tjchintjchin Member Posts: 12
Thanks for your reply. I am located in Maryland, and I ended up buying the 2009 Honda Civic EX-L with Navi (Automatic Sedan). I love it. In case, you are shopping and this info might be of use, the price I paid is as follows: (I don't have my sales sheet with me, but I think the following is pretty close)

    20,677 (includes freight)
    1246 tax (6% in MD)
    100 (Doc fee)
tags + title (can't remember this number)

OTD= 22,245 (including mudguards, wheel locks and door edge guards).

I think I did OK, but frankly I always walk out of the dealer convinced I paid too much. I understand they need to make a fair profit, I just don't want to be the person who pays $$$$.

Anyway, good luck on your Civic shopping!
  • bearcrkrdbearcrkrd Member Posts: 167
In my area, South of Seattle, it looks like a couple hundred $$ below Invoice for Civic's right now. Great prices!! I bought an '08 LX Sedan at the end of May. Have 25,000 miles already. It just feels like what a little car should feel like! I'm thinking of upgrading to an '09 EX or more likely EX-L. I can't help it. If there was ever a time to buy it's now. I wish to H E double-toothpicks I was a bit more sure about my employment future.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Your car is literally a baby! I am @ 80,000 miles and still think mine so! But you are correct, IF there ever was EVER a time to buy.... it is NOW !!

As an aside to this threads topic. IF I were you, given what you said, I would only upgrade (actually I would not upgrade) under the scenario of 1. just lost the job, 2. can easily write a check for the balance 3. and\/or continue the monthly payments for the full term.
  • chas0215chas0215 Member Posts: 40
It seems to me that raw numbers by themselves do not tell us the whole purchasing story. It would be helpful for us to also know whether or not the car is being financed through the dealer. If that is the case, you need to tell us that because of the additional profit margins on the loan payout. Did you finance your car through the local dealer? If not, you got a great buy. Almost too good to be true.
