I purchased a 2009 Civic LX with auto trans today for $17,000 OTD.
The breakdown was $16,125 for the car, $500 doc fees, and $375 for
tax and tags. The dealer was having what was advertised as a Honda
Regional Promotion Sale. I don't know what was involved in that as no
specific rebates, etc were mentioned but I like the price.
  • seattledealsseattledeals Member Posts: 1
Is this a good price for a 2009 Civic LX w/ automatic transmission?

    $19175 OTD

Base price 17377, sales tax 1616, dealer fees 131, doc fee 50.

I'm in Seattle with its ridiculous 9.3% sales tax...

I've been trying to get a great deal for the car.The dealers are saying they can't go lower than $16,700 + lic + tax which come out to $18,361.04 OTD.

Does anyone know a dealer near the 94531 area code that can give me a better deal. I saw a post that someone got a steal of $17000 OTD that is what I wish I can get.
  • djbenbbaddjbenbbad Member Posts: 5
I would haggle for less. Go online and submit a price qoute. That $650-680 destination charge is BS. They pay maybe $0-150 for delv. Good luck on getting your deal. I'm trying to get my car for $17000 OTD but no takers so far.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The destination charge is NOT b.s. The dealer pays that entire amount. You can argue whether it's a fair fee, but it's not a fee charged by the dealer, but by the manufacturer (Honda).

I'm quite sure I'm at or near the floor of the price for the 09 Civic EX-L Sedan. $20,600 out the door. Next thing is throwing in some extras (either free or reduced) on the way out such as remote start, Bass speaker system, and some cheaper stuff like cargo nets and rear seat cupholders.

What are other people getting for their 09 Civic EX-L Sedans?

I picked up my car and finished the paper work on Friday. No extra pressure from the finance guy for the extended warranty but it is something I am considering. Paid $16,700 for the car which also included splash guards and all season mats. They offered the 7 year 120k mile extended warranty for $1195. I produced the document from Saccucci Honda where they sell the same plan for $825. The guy took it to his manager and they said they would match the price of $825. I do tend to keep my car a long time--currently 7 years and 165k miles. Thoughts from the forum experts---good deal or go without. Thanks!
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
Me personally, I never buy an extended warranty on a Honda or Toyota, but then that's me. Only you can judge whether the piece of mind that the extra warranty gives is worth the $825 to you. There are many differing opinions on this subject.

Also, be sure it's the Honda backed warranty and not some 3rd party fly by night operation.
  • sridharhssridharhs Member Posts: 14
Just remember that you have the option of buying the extended warranty anytime before the factory warranty (3 years, 36K miles) expires. You don't have to decide right away and the price difference is not too much if you buy it later.
Either way, if the extra warranty makes you feel secure and helps enjoy your new car, just go for it. :-)

I :) just got the LX for $18,151.76 ODT Love the car. The dealer went $16,499 :surprise: on the price if I would be there today. I wonder how much did they make on commisions? :)
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    That's a good price westy_man

I got mine for 18800 OTD plus a free tint. What's the current sales tax on your state?

Hi, I'm sorry about my late reply - I left town just after writing my last post. He was my internet sales point of contact, and I was reasonably pleased with the transaction. (Though I see that the forum rules say that we should not post names of salespeople)

Isellhondas clarified for me that he had me fill out an "options contract", to protect the contract that we had reached, giving me financing through Honda, when I came in with my own financing. Well, if the salesperson at Dublin explained this to me properly, instead of saying it was needed to crosscheck my information against the 'known terrorists' list and threatening to go show me the statute, I would have declined it. Screw what makes the dealers happy. This was the only thing that pissed me off.

Isellhondas, I'm very happy I went with my own financing, even though it's at 5.99% APR instead of 1.9% APR. This was my first new car purchase, and my first interaction with loan documents and legal-ese. I don't know enough about how contracts are written to not get myself totally screwed over by the F&I guys, who I do not trust one single bit. I trust my bank, who I have done business for years and years, and has great customer service (USAA, for those who care). It's not always all about the buck.

"$16,929 which came to $18,534 OTD"

    Did 16,929 include destination fees?

I am never too certain what truly constitutes an OTD price; break it down, can you?

    Thanks!
  • E_SiE_Si Member Posts: 2
I just bought a Rallye Red 09 Si Coupe (no summer tires, no navi) for $20,995 plus tax (6.5%), doc fee (250) and registration (25). Shipping (destination charge) is included in the price.

To this I added a HFP sport muffler (no performance gain, just sounds nice and looks great) and splash guards. I plan on adding HFP 17" wheels, summer tires (maybe the Michelins Honda uses, maybe something else entirely), HFP brakes and auto-dimming rear view mirror some time in the spring or summer.

The local MSRP is 22475 (again, shipping included), so that's $1,480 off MSRP.
Per Edmunds, Invoice is $20075 (without shipping).
Assuming the local shipping charge is about $570, I must have paid about $350 over invoice. All in all not bad I think.

I purchased it from Century Honda of Cincinnati. The quote was requested via email using their web site.
I may be mistaken, but I think when you start your research on the Internet, and then request your quotes via email only (at first avoid giving them your phone number if possible), they'll put their best offer up front in order to lure you into the dealership (if they don't, you simply won't show up).

    Regards,

    E.
  • westy_manwesty_man Member Posts: 3
Yes, the $16,929 included the $670 destination charge (at least I think it was $670 - I don't have the paperwork in front of me, so I don't remember exactly). The out the door price was $18,534, meaning I wrote a check for that amount and left with the car.

Tupuc...sales tax in CA is 7.75%. I'll post a more detailed breakdown of the purchase fees later.
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    ok,

    Dang that's even higher than TX's 6.25%,

    No problemo thanks

Hello everyone, I am considering buying a 2009 LX-S w/AT in houston, and I found out the price posted here is vary from 17,000 to 19,000. Dose anyone know how much I can get in Houston? Thank you. :)
  • westy_manwesty_man Member Posts: 3
Ok...I looked at the sale documents and here's the break down.

    Sale price = $16,929
    Doc Prep = $55
    Sales Tax = $1316.26
    DMV Filing Fee = $29
    License Fee = $110
    Registration Fee = $86
California Tires Fee = $8.75 (I have no clue what this is)

Total OTD purchase price = $18,534.01

I hope this info helps others. I am very happy with the car. This is our third Civic (we had a 1986, and we still have a 1997 - which we still drive daily and has 180K miles with an original clutch!). I always thought Civics were very common cars and that it would be easy to find the combination we wanted. But, it appears that manual transmissions are only desirable by old geezers like me and it was a chore to find an LX-S with a manual in the Polished Metal Metallic color.
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    My friend,

I'm not an old geezer and my civic arriving on Feb is exactly like yours; color, type and transmission.

    Good for you!
  • E_SiE_Si Member Posts: 2
Same here. Still in my 30s I don't consider myself old (maybe some would). My previous Civic was an EX with manual transmission. It may be an illusion, but it just felt "sportier". A lot more fun to drive than any automatic I've had... I feel more involved with the driving experience.

I'm looking at buying an '09 honda civic LX AT. Has anyone gotten or seen any good deals in Southern California (Los Angeles Area) for dealer financing or good OTD prices? thanks for the help :)
  • spaniel3spaniel3 Member Posts: 2
In July 2008 I purchased a Civic Coupe LX in Baltimore, MD and paid $18,600 total. Was this a decent price? Also I turned down all of the dealer provided extras but now I'm thinlking that maybe I should have gotten the undercoating. Was not getting it a bad decision?
  • tupuctupuc Member Posts: 27
    Exactly my feelings,

If you watch this video, they review a Civic LX-S automatic and even they mention that it less fun to drive compared to the manual :shades: ohh yeah

Don't beat yourself over the price you paid, at the end you made a smart choice by choosing Honda.

I paid 18800 + free tint for an LX-S manual, which is more expensive than the LX,

Anyway, you will survive my friend ;) at least you didn't buy a Cobalt :P
  • spaniel3spaniel3 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the reply. I forgot to add that my Honda LX is automatic transnmission.

I drove home my 09 Civic EX-L AT in Alabaster Silver Metallic at an out the door price of $20,750. This forum was very helpful, thanks all.
  • jwifferdilljwifferdill Member Posts: 13
Nice price! I paid about $750 more in September and my Civic didn't come with the "L" at the tail end.
  • beerbaronhomerbeerbaronhomer Member Posts: 8
I picked up my Urban Titanium Metallic EX-L manual with navi at the end of December with an out-the-door price (incl. docs & fees) for $22.5K. Love it so far - even handles decently in the snow so far, but then again, I have been driving in snow since I learned to drive 15 years ago (it's always more the driver and tires than the car).

Here is a recent internet quote I received with the cost of dealer installed options:

    LX-S Sedan: $17,447.09
    Window Tint: $299
    Protection Package: $395
    TTL: 11366.56

    Total: $19,497.65

This is more reasonable than I have seen lately. I've seen Honda Cars of Katy and John Eagle in Houston. Honda Cars of Katy is hard to deal with and negotiate. Have you found any better deals than the above?
  • wossawossa Member Posts: 2
Thank you for the reply. I got several quotes from local dealerships,
John Eagle gave me 18,761.22 OTD price, but without dealer installed options.

    Rusell & Smith 18,941 OTD

    Gillman 18,972 OTD

I am looking for a price around 18,500 OTD with everything, hope there are takers. :)

    Hi Everyone,

My very 1st post here but thought I would provide info since this forum has been so helpful to me in making my own purchase.

Bought the following from a SOCAL dealer today:

2009 Civic Si Coupe - Black

    - no summer tires
    - 7 miles on odometer
    - protection package (splash guards, rubber trunk tray???, wheel locks, etc...)
    - no navigation

    MSRP: $22,575

Price: $19,750 (destination included) + TTL.

I thought it was a good deal or good enough for me to follow through on it.

I'm working on an OTD price of 17K, (cash) which includes freight, appearance package and TTL. (3% sales tax). I think this would be a good deal. Right now I'm in the 17500 range. I'm told by friends and relatives that I could do better given the economy. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also trying to see if I should look for an 08, I see some dealers still have inventory.

    Thanks,
    Ron
  • rhunter1rhunter1 Member Posts: 5
    Hi,

I would say that $17K OTD is doable for that type of vehicle. I was working via email with 5 different dealers and the lowest started out with $16500 (DEST included); after about a week, my best offer was down to $16,100. With your 3% compared to 7.75% where I live, $16,100 + TTL should come out to about 17K or so. Anyways, only works if you have a bunch of dealers to work with. Some would tell me flat out, "I don't know why that dealer will sell you the car just to lose money....come back and talk to us if it doesn't work out" In the end, I bought the Si but was met with similar tactics. I was told that $20,200 for the Si I bought would result in dealer losing money. In the end, I bought one for $19,750 but it took a week of emails with various dealers.

    Sincerely
  • sparkybsparkyb Member Posts: 4
    Thanks.

I'm going to try the email shopping with various dealers in the DC/MD/VA area.
I don't mind driving within a 100 mile radius to get the best deal. I may just go with the EX model since I had a 2003 EX that I was very happy with. I'm going to take a test drive but after that I'm don't think I need to be spending time driving to different dealers until I've honed on a final OTD price.

    Thanks,
    Ron

I have been quoted the following from the dealer:

Lease - 39 months, Selling price= 16,400, Manufactor Factor = 0.0025 and Residual Value .62. Monthly payment is 249, 0 down. Let me know if this is a good deal Can you please send me a spreadsheet of manufactor factor for January and February

    thanks

What are other specific amounts adding on to the offered price besides sale tax and registration fee? I see there is "Destination Charge of 670". Is that something adding to the offered price? Thanks.

I am in market looking for a 2009 EX(new). The honda dealship near my place has a slightly used 2008 EX with just 3500 miles on it. The car has clean record and looks new! I am thinking of buying it instead "if" I can negotiate a good deal.

After spending some time with the sales person, here are the numbers.

2008 EX AT with 3500 miles
    $16000 + Tax. Coming out to ~$17000

Any thoughts? Couldn't decide go for this or new EX?

You help/comments are very much needed.

i live in baltimore and i say you coulda gotten a cheaper price at a dealership in laurel with extra garbage thrown in for free or if you're willing to drive 45 minutes east or west, you coulda done way better, i'm talking $1000 cheaper at 2 other dealerships.
either way, it's a honda, resale value is great so don't brood over the price. i got mine for $16.5k and i know someone who got an offer for about $500 cheaper than mine. i'm still content. The only thing i regret is i shoulda waited cuz this 2009 drives the same as my 2000 civic lx auto 4-door and i think my 2000 civic lx gets better mileage than this new car. oh well....i keep telling myself the digital speedometer makes the 2009 worth it...lol.

I purchased a new 2009 Civic EX Sedan with Automatic Transmission for $18,088 (including destination), plus Tax (7.75% in CA), Title, License, Registration, and Documentation ($55) fees from Diamond Honda in Puente Hills, California. Out the door, it was under $19,800. I was not interested in any of the dealer add-ons such as mud flaps or wheel locks. I had shopped around for pricing through fleet and internet sales including the Costco Auto program, local dealerships, and overstock.com. Shortly after the $500 dealer marketing support incentive took effect this month, overstock.com was offering the model I wanted for $18,185. (Note that the overstock.com price is affected by the ZIP code entered, since it depends on the participating dealers nearby as well as their fluctuations in price). I was planning to purchase from the overstock dealer in Corona, but stopped by Diamond Honda first and was offered a better deal.

In terms of customer service, it had seemed okay at the time of making the purchase. When inspecting the car I had noticed that sections of the rubber seal on the door frame were pulling away for two of the doors. The problems with the seals were obvious, especially when comparing them against the corresponding doors which had no such problems. I made sure that the problem was documented and that an appointment was scheduled to correct it.

When I went in for the scheduled appointment, the associate service manager took a look at the problem and claimed that there was nothing wrong. For the areas in question, he pulled out a section of the rubber seal and jammed it back in, saying that this type of situation is normal since the seal is not held in place by glue. I noticed that the areas he supposedly 'fixed' immediately began to pull away again, returning to the same state as before. He would not acknowledge that there was a problem, even after I had pointed out that the seals on two of the other doors did not exhibit such issues and that his attempt did nothing to fix it. In the end neither the associate service manager nor the internet sales manager which I had purchased the car from was willing to provide an adequate solution.

The issue with the seals is a direct result of defects in workmanship or materials. Assuming that the rubber seal had nothing wrong in terms of materials then it was not installed correctly, thus a problem with workmanship. And assuming that the workmanship to install the rubber seal was performed correctly, then its pulling away is likely the result of defective materials (such as the part being deformed and not fitting correctly). If both the workmanship and materials were sufficient, then all four seals would be free of noticeable problems instead of only two. Overall I am extremely dissatisfied with the poor level of customer service from Diamond Honda's service center, which did absolutely nothing to resolve the issue (the issue was even acknowledged at the time of sale). The level of customer service from the internet sales manager while negotiating the price and completing the purchase was okay; For those considering this dealership, I would recommend either: (1) Buying from another dealer who can match/beat their price and level of customer service during purchase, and which has a service center that will actually solve problems, or (2) Purchasing from this dealer only after performing a thorough inspection of the vehicle to make sure that nothing is wrong (and if anything is wrong whatsoever, insist on a different car in stock), because their service center may not meet any reasonable expectations to fix defects regardless of what is promised.

After my experience with Diamond Honda's service department, I now refuse to go back to it. For any maintenance which needs to be performed in the future, I will take my business to one of the other dealerships to see how well their service centers treat customers. While I will not completely rule out this dealership in the future for the purposes of buying a new car, it will only be under consideration if they can provide the lowest price and a vehicle free of defects. Continuing with the topic of dealership experiences, while price shopping I had visited other dealers in Southern California. The fleet/internet sales manager at Metro Honda (Montclair) was friendly and straightforward; while in my case I found a lower price elsewhere, he was reasonable and I would definitely consider that dealership in the future. The internet sales manager at Penske Honda (Ontario) was courteous; but the pricing wasn't really competitive compared to some of the others, despite claims that they could match prices and offer the best deal due to high volume. Rock Honda (Fontana) was one of the biggest wastes of time out of all the dealerships I had visited when comparing prices; Admittedly, I should have asked for their fleet/internet sales manager right from the beginning. I talked with someone who was most likely a regular salesman, and who tried to get me to commit to a specific vehicle number in stock before even before offering a price (and when he did make an offer, it was above Sticker Price). Since I already had offers significantly below Invoice, I decided not to waste any more time and walked out.

This forum was a useful resource to me, and I decided to share my experiences as well. Your mileage may vary.

Honda will want to know what your experiences are/have been. You'll get a survey - take it. They regard these surveys very seriously, from what I understand
