Thanks so much for sharing the details of your car buying experience and the strategy you used to arrive at a great price. $16,100 with destination is awesome!! Congratulations on your new car!

Please also share the breakdown of your total out the door cost, including the price of car, destination, any trade in you had, doc fee, sales tax (&%), tags fee? Did you buy extended warranty, or any other options with the car? If you financed your car through the honda dealer, how was your experience with their finance manager? What kind of deal did they offer on financing?

    Thanks so much!

I went to a Honda dealership in Monrovia, CA, last monday (april 6) to try to buy the Civic EX sedan 5at. Sticker price is 20,775. After 2 hours of negotiation, I ended up offering 19,500 OTD, but they wanted 19,700. As I was leaving, a woman came out and told me that she would sell it for 19,600 OTD.

I think they can handle the extra 100 (especially with the $750 dealer cash/rebate), so I told them to call me when they were ready to sell me the car for 19,500. It's been 5 days and they haven't called. What should I do? Just pay the extra 100? And the more I research, the more it seems like I'm paying more than average. Is that a good deal? Sales tax in CA is 9.25%.

    Thanks :)

I am looking to pick up my car this Saturday and would like to know if the dealer is offering a good price.

    Car 15,950.00
    Tax 8.625 1,375.68

Allication fee for Registration of Title 45.00

Please let me know what you think of the price and if you think I should get the extended warranty.

    Thanks

Your buying one of the most dependable cars on the market, it comes with a 3 yr. bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 year warranty on the engine and drive train, skip the extended warranty. And as far as the price is concerned, from what I`ve read here that is a good price. My purchase was a 2009 EX-L coupe, it was considerably more. I`ve had mine for over a month now and have not had to take it back for even one adjustment or squeak or rattle, Knock on wood, ha,ha.

I'm living in socal too and thinking of getting a LX/EX AT sedan. Was thinking maybe we could buy together and get a better deal? let me know if you already bought and please tell me the price u bought and the dealership. Thanks.
  • jemachlojemachlo Member Posts: 6
Wao, that sounds great! I'm planning to buy it from Sierra Honda, in Monrovia, CA. Are you around the area? For the Civic 2009 Honda civic EX 5AT Sedan, I got 19,600 OTD. Haven't bought it yet. If we make it there together, we would definitely get a lower price. The LX-S 5AT Sedan, they said they had it for 18,800 OTD. I didn't try bargaining cuz at the time I wasn't interested in that car. Now it's an option.

Have you gotten any quotes? Please let me know!
  • joey0307joey0307 Member Posts: 6
I got the quote from sierra honda, spirit honda, normreeves, but among them all, sierra gave me the lowest starting price. and i try to bargain with them to get the lower prices, but they ask me to visit their showroom. I quote with LX and the prices i got is 18200 OTD and i believe i can get it down to 17900 since some forum people said they have quoted 16100 (incl. destination). so after calculated w/ tax and all the charges, should be around 17900. I havent got any chances to visit the showroom yet, because i was hoping to get other quotes before entering showroom. The LX-S price i got from them is 18800 OTD. Now I'm looking at EX too. But the 19600 sounds a little more than what others get in this forum. If not over my budget too much, i'd like to take the EX. I'm at Arcadia. So should be very close to Monrovia. Maybe we could team up and buy together to get better deal. Are u in a hurry to get a new car? My friends said maybe we could wait until memorial day and have promotion cost. :D
  • jemachlojemachlo Member Posts: 6
Yeah, Sierra was the one with the lower prices for me too. You are right! I feel like 19,600 is a bit too much. I've read of people taking it for 19,000 (which is Edmunds' TMV) but who knows. I would buy the LX-S for around 18300.

Not exactly in a hurry, but was expecting to get a car by May 19 cuz the Vehicle License Fee is increasing in CA from 0.65 percent to 1.15 percent after that date (check out dmv.ca.gov). that would be like $90 more. Is it for sure that they are having a promotion cost on Memorial Day? What about we go there like at the end of this month and see what happens after that?

If you still wanna go on Memorial Day only, I completely respect that. Please let me know when you are going, ok? I hope we can buy it together. I'll do the same :D

PS: Oh yeah, based on Edmunds, Honda right now has an incentive of $750 for their dealerships. Ends on May 4th, it says.
  • joey0307joey0307 Member Posts: 6
Ok we can go there end of this month to find out what we can get. If the license fees is increasing then i would get a car before the fees increase. :) Please let me know then.

jemachlo>> I have a strong business relationship with another Honda dealership which I will not disclose on this msg. Email me, and let's see if we can grab a better deal than what Sierra offers. I plan to get a Civic EX MT soon as well. You should be able to find my e-mail in my profile.

It's great that you have a strong relationship with a dealership. What's the quote you got from them? I'm sorry but there's no need for contact if you don't know the dealership's name.
  • lea6454lea6454 Member Posts: 2
Any idea of what price I should ask for?
Any help or advice would be great!! : ) Its my first time buying a car.
  • hondajhondaj Member Posts: 9
I never say I did not know the dealership's name. How can I have a strong relationship with a dealership whose name I do not even know? I have purchased 6 cars from this dealership throughout the years. I only did not want to mention the name and sales manager's name due to Edmund's rule and their privacy. I am just trying to help, but if you don't want to contact; it's totally fine with me.

I have also dealt with Sierra before, but they aren't as competitive anymore. Never go to Spirit or Goudy... they are the worst dealership I have been to.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
FYI it's ok to mention the dealership name--just not their web site or an individual's name.
  • jemachlojemachlo Member Posts: 6
    Exactly! Thanks, backy.

Hondaj> Sorry if I was rude. It's really kind of you to respect what you consider Edmund's rules. Thanks for your assistance as well.

Here's the deal I ended up going with for the Civic EX AT Sedan in Virginia:

    Car: $17,585 (incl. Destination)
    Proc fee: $399
    Tax: $540 (VA - 3%)
    DMV: $76

    OTD: $18,600

This including what they were calling Honda's appearance package: lug-nuts, mud guards, trunk tray and pin-stripping.

I also got quotes for the LX AT Sedan and the best were:

$15,788 (dest. included, $399 proc. fee, with the above accessories)
$16,388 (dest. included, $299 proc. fee, no accessories)

All negotiations took place over the internet with no surprises at the dealership.

There are several dealers in the Cleveland and Cincinnati area selling this car, including destination, for around $20,500. On top of that you have $250 standard doc fees, temp tags, and sales tax.
  • jemachlojemachlo Member Posts: 6
Oh my god! the tax makes such a huge difference. I bought the Civic EX AT Sedan yesterday for $19,500 OTD and that's cuz in CA sales tax is 9.25%. More than 1K more. Accessories are nice, but in the dealership they cost more than outside.
I think you got a good price. congrats on your new car! :D
  • vegashomesvegashomes Member Posts: 24
Why is there such a large range of pricing. Ex civics go from 17,500 to almost 19,000 in different parts of the country
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
Yeah, I had no idea there was such a differences in taxes until I started reading this forum. The good news is you get to live in CA! I love it out there.

I agree on the accessories but that particular dealership includes them on all of their Civics. I passed on the pin striping and I doubt I'll use the wheel locks.

    Congrats to you too!
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
I don't know what to make of the differences around the country.

I didn't even bother haggling with the dealer as it seemed like they offered a good deal right off the bat (via email.) They're moving to another location in June so I think they were trying to clear the lot.

Does anybody know what's the current OTD price for Honda Civic LX/LX-S in Chicago? And which dealer is offering a good price.

I'm planning to buy one just want to know views of others.

I'm considering a new Civic to replace my '06 Mazda3 (love it but need an automatic). I considered the '06 Civic back in 12/05 when I bought the Mazda, but couldn't find a color combination that I liked. White is my favorite exterior color ("pure" white, not pearl) but I really dislike tan/beige interior. The Civic's Taffeta White was only available with beige interior at the time.

The Civic LX-S interests me because it has standard black interior (with silver stitching, which looks sharp in the photos I've seen). A Taffeta White Civic LX-S would be the perfect Civic for me. But I'm not having much luck finding one....

Is the LX-S hard to find? Anyone else priced or purchased on lately?

No worries. The dealership I have dealt with for the past 5 years is Keyes Honda in Woodland Hills. I am cool with one of the managers there. Since my excellent buying experiences there, I have been referring customers to them whenever I hear someone is getting a Honda. Don't get me wrong, I have never stopped shopping around even though we have such a strong business relationship, but their pricing still surpasses those that are in the san gabriel valley. If you are looking to get a Honda, I can refer you. So far, none of my referrals have left their lot without a new car. I am just so done with dealing with so done with dealing with Goudy, Spirit, and Sierra, etc, where they are filled with cocky Asian salespersons. I am Asian and I hate dealing with Asian. Sierra is the best out of the worst, but again, I'd rather drive the extra 25 miles to get a better deal.

Sorry to bother you but is it possible to get the VIN number or stock number or last name? I'm trying to get the same quote from the store and they say that they need one of those info to look up the info to give me the same price. I really really appreciate your help. Thanks for your time regardless if you answer this post as well as answering my previous question.

Was $15,788 (dest. included, $399 proc. fee, with the above accessories) the OTD price? Please let us know where you got this quote as I've been looking online for VA also and haven't been able to get such a low quote. Thanks!
  • great_danegreat_dane Member Posts: 2
Here's the deal I got, was wondering if the pros here can tell me if it's fair.

$18,700 with about $300 of accessories included. (not including Destination).

    Reasonable?
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
Pohanka Honda in Fredericksburg. I had a good experience there.
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
No, that was the price of the car with the destination included (and those accessories). I only mentioned the proc. fee because it was $100 more than the other quote that I had for the LX. That was from Pohanka Honda in Fredericksburg but they had limited colors remaining in the LX's: white, urban titanium and atomic blue.

Thank you very much vegas, I appreciate your response. I'm a noob here so just trying to get the hang of things!

I had to order my LX-S; well, I ordered it because I wasn't so sure I was going to find one hanging around in Urban Titanium Metallic (took delivery December 08 - prices weren't as good as they are now) - I love love love the interior (black) and would never consider the other fabrics offered. Leather steering wheel is VERY nice; I drove the 08 Civic LX for 6 months. Comparing the two steering wheels, the leather is supple and SO MUCH MORE comfortable

Good luck - don't give up!

I just want to thank everyone who posts their purchase prices here!

My wife's '97 Accord started having many problems this year. I had to replace lots of hardware in the Accord - I used Craigslist mechanic (after I purchased the parts from Kragen). Then yesterday I discovered that we had to replace another part in the car. Too much time and money were spent on fixing this up. After getting the "blessing" from my wife, I got a new car for her (Urban Titanium). I had already done some research last month (March) and came pretty close to purchasing one but found out at the last minute the color wasn't available. Personally, I prefer the 3rd generation Prius and when I buy my car I'm going to wait little bit more for the plug ins to arrive.

Anyway its Civic LX-S sedan out the door price in Placer County, CA for $18,100 with floor mats and trunk tray thrown in with full tank of gas.

    Sales price 16,480.10
    Document 55.00
    Sales tax 1,364.15
    License Fee 107.00
    Registration 85.00
    Ca tire fee 8.75
    Total $18,100.00

    I also traded-in my 1997 Accord SE auto 4 dr for $3,000.

Finally, they also told me that I could get Civic LX (urban titanium) for 17,400.00 out the door.

    Hi,
I am going to Pohanks Honda in Fredricksburg tomorrow, looking at a 09 Civic EX Auto. Can you please share with me what you got there and if it was auto and how much the OTD was ? Thanks.
  • pjtippjtip Member Posts: 10
I posted the details in message #8295 (use the 'Go To Msg #' at the bottom of the page).

I got that quote via the internet, so I'd try that for starters. They were easy to deal with and low pressure on the add-ons. Good luck.

    Hi!
I've been browsing the forum trying to get an idea of what people are paying, but it's a bit confusing because the numbers aren't always clear as to what they include. I've been negotiating with a dealership, I'm about to go make this purchase, so if anyone reads this in the next hour, please let me know what you think!

2009 Honda Civic EX Manual tranny (starts $800 less on invoice than AT's)

    Negotiated price:

    $16943 (includes $670 dest. fee)

This doesn't include the taxes, doc fee, ttl. That amount comes to approx $1471.

So my total OTD price is approx. $18419. The extras on the car include the splashguards (can buy online for $53) moonroof visor (buy online for $89) and some paint protection which I heard is a joke anyway...I didn't want any of that stuff because I was going to buy online, but since it's on the car, that's ok as long as they aren't charging $1000 for that package!

So based on the $16942 before ttl, is that a good deal or a great deal?

Appreciate your insight! I'm near Atlanta, GA btw.

    Thanks!

    L.

    Hi,
Thanks. Just returned from Pohanka picking up a LX-S. They sold the EX in polished metal mettalic that I wanted but I also liked the black interior in LX-S. BTW: The salesman said some people did not like the wheels on the EX but licked on LX-S. If you are like that let me know, I will swap because I like the wheels on the EX.

    Thanks.
  • christolchristol Member Posts: 4
    Update:
Well, went and bought the car! Pick it up tomorrow, can't wait. On the way, I called another dealer I had visited to look at a 2007 Civic, told him I was on my way to buy a new one, and wanted to see if he was interested in giving me a better price. He talked to the sales manager and said that was a great price, they couldn't beat it (or didn't want to?) He did say if they tried to sneak in an extra $1000 in "stuff" to come back and see him and he'd work out a deal.
Anyway, I feel comfortable I got a good deal. Note to anyone in the Atlanta area who is looking for a Civic - I bought mine at Gwinnett Place Honda - they have a ton of civics in stock. I also learned my MT civic has been on the lot since September!!! Hopefully that won't cause any issues. So if you are shopping, I'm sure that there are others on that lot that have been there for awhile, and you could use that as a good negotiation tool. I didn't learn this until everything was done and I was looking at the manual, and found the date when the tech signed it after inspection when it first came in. That is almost 6 months!

    Anyway, good luck everyone!

    L.

The 09 EX comes with new design wheels that I heard has received mixed reactions. I personally like it, but lools like some people like the old wheel style. Anyway, I had to downgrade to LX-S because the dealer sold the color of my choice on the EX. If there is someone in the Washington, DC to Richmond surrounding area who bought an 09 EX and do not like the wheels, please let me know. I am willing to swap my wheels that came on my LX-S. Thanks.

I quoted from Gillman, McDavid, Russell&Smith, and Katy Cars of Honda. Among them, Russell is the lowest as following:
    base: $16,473
    tax: $1,029.56 (6.25% in TX)
    inventory tax: $40.39
    document fee: $50.00
    title fee: $33.00
    license fee: $72.30
    inspection fee: $23.75
    total drive out: $17,722

Katy Cars of Honda and McDavid sales said they would like to match the offer, which I already feel overpriced by at least $1,000. How much shall I shed off?

I am looking at a target OTD price of $16,500; has someone in the greater Houston area has a recent purchase lower than $16,500? thanks.
  • sacramento2sacramento2 Member Posts: 18
I just got an email from one of the local dealers and he said he could give me the Civic LX AT sedan for $17,200 OTD. So what this means is that I could have gotten LX-S for $17,900 OTD (+$700 invoice of LX). Oh well, I hope someone else could benefit from this. Also, if you are not in a hurry you might want to wait for the Memorial Day sale or few days before end of April to get some better deals (& remember that just like on April 1 we (CA) had sales tax increase of 1%, we are going to have a vehicle tag increase sometime in May) ...

Easy way to look at it is:
sales price Civic Auto LX $15,680 ($17,200 OTD)
sales price Civic Auto LX-S $16,380 ($17,900 OTD)

    Good Hunting...

    Atomic Blue LX-S
    Base: $15,751
    Tax: $787.55 (5%)
    Title/Reg: $111.00
    Cust Serv Fee: $299
    Total: $16948.55

Seems like a good internet quote but dealer absolutely refused to budge on first offer or let us leave the dealership then offered $40 off with change of color.
Very high pressure sale but price seems okay.

What do you guys think. Good deal? Could have been better? Generally happy but did not appreciate the high pressure sales tactics, didn't get top choice color (polished metal), and disappointed I didn't stand up and leave.

I am in the process of looking for a new car and have settled on either the LX or EX Civic Coupe Manual.
Any suggestions which is the better value, and what type of prices are folks buying these up for currently given the present state of the economy?
There looks like a lot of well informed people on this forum, and so any and all help and comments would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.
  • sacramento2sacramento2 Member Posts: 18
Wow, you blew my price away, I thought I had pretty good with $16,480 base (& 18,100 otd) - Honda must be offering some extra incentives. Did they say? Was yours auto or manual?
  • crazyflycrazyfly Member Posts: 61
You got an awesome deal, really! LX-S for less than $17K OTD is unheard of. The best I've seen so far is $17,100 for just an LX, the LX-S are usully $500 more than that. I hear ya about the high pressure tactic but the dealer was probably desperate to sell and didn't want to let a genuine customer walk off the lot. Congrats on your new car! You got a great deal
