    Yes it is.

Anyone purchased or is working on purchasing a CR-V in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota or surrounding dealership (Rochester, St Cloud etc).

Would love to hear their experience including the OTD price (if purchased or target that they are going after), experiences with different dealerships and the one that they found the best to work with and any other thing that would be helpful.

I am in the process of starting contact with the dealer for 2014 EX AWD and would be happy to share my experiences.

I want to thank Brian for all his contributions to this forum. I ended up buying yesterday
    EX-AWD
    Invoice: 25,599 (includes Destination)
    Sales pirce: 24,799
    Flex Cash: 750
    Actual cost: 24,050
    Tax (MN 6.5%): 1,611
    DMV fees:411
    Doc Fee: 75
    OTD: 26,177

Could have done better but I'm happy with what I got. i did learn one thing: Make sure you get fresh inventory and not something that has been in the lot for months. I ended up getting a black CRV just off the truck with 1 mile on it. look for a sequence number last 7 digits of the vin that's newer than 65xxxxx

Which dealership in MN did you purchase this vehicle. I am also in MN looking potentially for a CR-V EX AWD. Thanks

Just started getting price quotes. This is what I have so far for a 2014 CRV EXL/Nav:

    1. Vehicle $28,904 (includes $830 destination charge)
    2. Doc Fees 166
    3. Plate/Liscense Transfer 145
    4. Chicago/Cook Tax 2779.05

    5. Rebate (1000.00)

    6. Total OTD if financed $30,994.
If paying cash add an additional $500.

Other dealer so far is $10.33 less

What is a fair counter offer to what I have here so far.
    Thanks.

    Birdie

Your models invoice price w dest/ charge included = 29,404. Your target price to buy should be starting at 1000 below above number and if your financing take another 500 or 750 of the dealers flex cash to lower your sale.

Great that's what I wanted to know. From the things that I have seen on this board I thought it was too high.

Brookdale is where i ended up buying (7miles from home). The dealer that was the most aggressive and whose quote i used to get a better deal is Richfield/Bloomington.

Hi guys, Honda dealer incentives per Edmunds in April includes $500 in dealer cash. Is this separate from the Flexcash?

Conquest cash you mean? (I have visions of picking an ornament off a tree in the showroom for a contest discount, but it's the wrong season. ;) )

Looks like you are a couple of thousand below invoice at this point. Looking good.

Newbie here. I have a question about the dealer financing and "flex cash." We want to pay cash for a CRV LX AWD. One dealer offered us an OTD price of 24,750, or 24,000 if we financed (with $750 flex cash). He said the financing had no prepayment penalty. He'd started out quoting MSRP, but fortunately we had several other quotes upon which we could base a negotiation. I see, Brian125 above said that getting dealer financing to get a good price is a "no brainer." My question: As I don't have a lot of experience with dealer financing... Don't they attach a bunch of fees to processing the loan? It seems to me like it opens a whole new door for them to find ways to play games.

BTW: I don't have the selling price and all the fees handy, but if anyone had any input on whether a 24,000 OTD price (I confirmed that it includes all taxes, fees, destination, etc.) seems reasonable, I'd appreciate it. Other dealers are balking when we ask them to beat this price.

We're in western New York State (Buffalo/Rochester).

    Thank you!

Sorry to add to my lengthy post. Just heard from the dealer and they said that there are no fees attached to the loan, except for a service fee of $8/mo. No credit check fee, loan application fee, etc. Does this sound correct?

We are talking via phone now: Here's the full deal: Sales price $22,587.55; $75 doc fee; $12.50 tire fee; $10 inspection fee; wash, wax* $99.95; $150 title and plate transfer; NYS tax 8% 1,815. I know the wash/wax fee is total b.s., but do I care if I feel I've reached rock bottom on their price?

$8/mo. service fee? That doesn't sound right. The only fees I've paid on a loans are $50 VSI fee. (Vendor Single Interest). That's actually an insurance contract that protects the bank against title issues, I think.

The Flex Cash comes from Honda Finance, and you have to lease or borrow from them to get the dealer to use it on your deal.

    Bob,

Pricing up in Western NY is not good at all on CRV's.. Your model crv lx awd model =

    22,723 plus 830 dest/ charge = 23,553.

Finance the vehicle thru honda to get the extra 750 dollars off your deal. Ask the dealerships what is the least amount you could finance to get the rebate.... 10k, 15k down etc.. Take the shortest term to pay back..... 24 month/ 36 month.. When you get the 1st bill from honda pay off in full..

Pricing...... here is a good target price that can be had below... Dont let any one dealer fool you. They know your inexperieced at this and will try to pull every trick to get you to spend more.

Whether your calling dealerships like I do or visiting dealership same methods apply.. Your target price to buy should be 500 below dealers invoice price with destanation charge included.. Plus another 750 dollars if you finance thru honda. Tell each dealership i buy today for this price.. Do you want the sale. No..... if..... ands..... or buts.......... YES or No............ be firm and walk out of each place if they wont agree.. 500 below dealers invoice price for the sale plus the 750 flex cash if you finance.

Invoice with dest/ charge..................23,553... CRV Lx Awd model

    minus 500 below dealers invoice............500

Total.................................................23,053 this is the dealers selling price you want.

750 flex cash rebate comes off above total.. Either before taxes or after how ever dealer does it .

Making your total buying number at 22,303 plus taxes, tags, and state fee's rounding out your OTD price...................

The price your are asking dealerships to sell this vehicle to you is very reasonable . The 750 flex cash dollars is comming from the honda corp for you financing thru them The dealership does not have to put up that money....... ....

Car-wash fee ... $ 99 dollars I would not pay it. tell dealership thats a deal breaker if you want my business...

    Brian125,

Telephoned dealers, best price received so far without negotiating for** 2014 CRV LX 2wd**: 21,100 (includes destination) + 500 doc fees = 21,600 (783 below invoice of 22,383) Location: Las Vegas, NV - flex cash $$ not included in price.

Edmunds shows Dealer Cash/Marketing Support of $500 thru May.

Would you try for another 1,000 off, to compensate for 500 doc fee and 500 dealer cash??

This would be a sales price of 1,783 below invoice not including any flex cash. ;)

  • brian125brian125 Member Posts: 5,244

    ashley,

1,783.......... plus flex cash ..... Boy you're going right for the jugular.. I love it!!!

Might be hard to get what your asking in NV. Not saying you shouldn't try lol.. .. You need to compensate the dealers 500 doc fee so raise your asking price for sure by 500 plus any rebates and incentives that apply to you would be taken off that price...

To answer you question ashley... Yes i would try for the knock out deal. Go for it... I'm the guy who starts very high also and squeezes dealers into giving me there best prices. I play there games............. piting one dealer against the next for my business.. Sometimes i use dealers prices in 3 or 4 boarding states to get my best deal.

Thanks, @brian125. We ended up making the deal today. We'd been going through this process for a few weeks, and had tested our price out at numerous dealerships. Had already given the "we'll buy a car from you today if you beat this price" speech to a few, who let us walk out the door. We weren't going to rush ourselves, but have been depending on a rental since our RAV-4 died on the side of the road -- so soon enough, our time would be money. Contacted dealers in Syracuse, Buffalo, and all Rochester dealerships -- getting detailed quotes from whoever would give them. Ultimately, got the Honda LX AWD at a selling price of $21,937 + tx, tags, and state fees (this was the price after the $750 flex is deducted). OTD for $23,925 ($75 less than our originial OTD target). We didn't pay the "car wash" fee. We did do the dealer financing in order to get the $750 flex. We financed $5K for 3yrs, but will pay it all off immediately. No service fees and no VSI. Thanks for your reassurance on the financing -- because I distrust all dealer claims, I'm not sure I would've done it otherwise. And now I'm confident it saved me $750.00.
With the selling price of $21.937, we came in under your suggested target of 22,303. So if I'm understanding all this correctly, we did okay. Thank you for your help on this Forum!

    Brian -

Many thanks for all of the helpful assistance you provide on reaching a good deal. I followed your advice on working through dealer internet departments and quickly discovered that there was a wide range offers being made. I reached out to 11 Honda dealerships across Eastern PA, targeting ones with the highest inventory of 2014 CR-V LX AWD vehicles. I made it known that I was ready to make an immediate purchase, that they would be in a competitive situation, and only the best price was going to earn my visit to finalize a deal. Of that total, three never responded, one offered $574 above invoice, one was right at invoice ($23,553), and the rest were about $600-$700 below invoice. I followed up with those six, but only two brought their quote down to $1,000+ below invoice. Here's my deal.

Sale Price (with destination): $22,500; PA Tax: $1,350 + Dealer Doc Fee: $133 + PA Title/PA New Tags/PA Electronic filing: $134.90; Including the $750 Flex Cash for Honda financing gives me an OTD price of $23,367.90

In the end I'm satisfied with the final numbers and I never even set foot into the dealership until Saturday when I stopped by to pick out a color. Thanks again Brian (and Edmunds) for educating today's new car shoppers.

Yes if a dealer is offering flex cash of 500 or 750 it makes sense to finance and get the extra savings.

You also need to negotiate a lower sale price for the CRV. Target price of 1000 below dealers invoice on your model............... plus flex cash. Your area is averaging around 1k below plus incentives.

Thanks Brian. Whatever you said is make sense. However, I spoke to him yesterday and he said that sales price 24750 is already below invoice price of 25767-truecar.com He said that he is also offering 1250 rebate, which probably flex cash and financing together. Is he right?
Also, he wants me to trade in my vehicle for above deal. He has NOT offered me any other incentives....I checked with other dealers and all of their out of door price is higher than this dealer.......What do you suggest? Thanks again.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454

Last I heard (and it's been a while), Truecar was charging dealers $300 for a sale.

Common wisdom is that dealers don't make all that much money selling new cars. The real money is in the service bay (most service writers work on commission just like most salespeople on the showroom floor), and in the used car sales. If that theory is right, that would explain why this dealer wants your trade. That's where the profit may be on this deal.

The other issue is whether that invoice number really means all that much. No one really knows what the bottom line number is on a new car from the factory, and the owner of the dealership may not even know until the accountant closes the books.

I just checked Costco has invoice price for EX AWD is 24690 + 830 destination = 25520...If so, he is NOT offering 1000 below invoice price.....Also, it seems like 750 flex cash and 500 for financing.... Overall, it looks like he is charging me 500 more for out of door prices in top of trade in required......can Brian or someone please take a look and guide me? Thanks.

$25,520 matches our invoice prices too.

An OTD number can confuse the issue since your taxes and fees are different from buyers in other areas. It may help if you split out the sales price for us, and then list the taxes, doc fees and registration, and any other charges.

(Out The Door generally means the entire amount it costs you to drive off the lot).

According to Nada price, and Edmunds... Here is dealers invoice price for your model.

    CRV Ex Awd............... 24,690

    dest/ charge....................830

    Total w dest/charge........25,520

Make a list of all your targeted dealerships 5 ,10, 15 etc. Call each one on the phone. Questions that need answering... How much is your dealerships doc fee charge and does your dealership have flex cash to offer. How much?. That is all you need to know until your ready to negotiate and buy this vehicle. A buy/ trade is a little more time consuming and tricky. It involves you to drive to more dealerships for Appraisals and getting a fair price.. Thats the hard part for most. ................. I will help you.

Once you collect your info you now can negotiate a price with dealership. So How do we go about this and make the best possible deal with your Trade in... Do we Tell dealer 1st, or later about the trade. I like to get my 3 or 4 best prices from dealerships that are closest to my house then drive to each dealership to see how much of a fair price I can get. All of my price negotiatons are done online via email and direct calls to each dealerships internet manager.. By throwing in a trade while negotiating a new car price I find never works well. I want each dealers best price on the new vehicle. Fully knowing my trade might be undersold.. You will recoupe back some of the lost trade in money from sales tax being deducted from the new car purchase that your trade nets.

Here is the formula : Very good new car price = below fair trade in price. Dont forget dealer needs to make a few bucks on this deal to, so the trade may take the hit.. I like to sell my vehicles privately. I hate to give back 3 or 4k for being lazy especially if my vehicles are in good condition and running well. But thats me.. I know some people will disagree.

    plala,

I would run from this dealership they are giving you a 769 below invoice price. They are giving you this price assuming you will finance and are giving you the 750 flex cash from the honda corp. for financing it.. Dealer is selling you this vehicle at invoice price hoping your stupid enough to take it..

I dont see how your trade is making a difference in this deal yet. Please post year, make, model, miles of your vehicle. Whats dealers offer? Was this vehicle in a reported accident? Has the front airbags ever deployed from a accident.

What state are you buying this vehicle???? lets see what we could figure out..

    Doc Fees: 190
    Plate transfer fee:120
Rebate 1,250 =========offered rebate.. assuming 750 flex cash and rest 500 for financing....
    Taxes: 1,760

Total out of door price: 25,570

He is giving trade in value 1400$ for 1997 Toyota camery LE 144000 with premium sound....

What price should I offer him? Should I tell him to get out of trade in and out of door price of 25,000? Would that be a fair price?

We purchased the CRV EXL AWD no Nav or Entertainment, on Friday, April 18th from a dealer in the Chicago area. I thought I would share the experience with everyone. I apologize in advance for the length of this response.

I initially contacted via email 8 dealers in my area. In my email I told each of them that I would be purchasing a CRV by the end of the month. I stated that at this stage I would only be available for contact through email. I indicated that I was not interested in any dealer add ons, that I did not know if there would be a trade in or if I was interested in financing. In the email I told each dealer that I would be purchasing from the location with the best price and that I would be a loyal customer. I also stated that I wanted their best price broken down as follows; vechicle price including destination charge, flex cash, and additional discounts, doc fees, title and transfer fess, estimated sales tax (since I didn't know if I was going to trade in my Volvo C70 or not) and any additional charges.

2 Dealers never responded, 3 dealers contacted me the next day, the remaining 3 contacted me within 3 hours.

Dealer #1, #2 and #3 called and sent an email. I responded with the above requests.
Each of these three dealers offered $500 flex cash and that was it. Dealer #3 then contacted me and stated that all dealers in the area purchased the vehicles at the same price and that the pricing would only be $200+/- difference and what I mainly needed to consider was the reputation of the dealer and how convenient their locations was for me. I dropped that dealer from my plan.

We went to the Costco recommended dealer only to get the pricing and to use that to negotiate with all the dealerships.

After the test drive the rep brought out the Costco invoice and their pricing. Everything was listed.

The Invoice price of $27,955 which included the $830 destination charge.
    Costco discount $150
    Flex Cash $500
    Contest Cash $750
    Friends & Family $616.

    Total Discounts $2016

The Friends & Family was a fluke. It turns out that when I gave the rep my drivers license for the test drive the Sales Manager saw the zip code. He came out to talk to us and told us that he grew up in our neighborhood. It also turns out that we know his family. So I can't really take any credit for getting that discount.

We left and I contacted the other dealers. Only 1 responded with a price that was within $61 of the dealer we had gone to. We decided to return to the Costco dealer and we decided that we did not want to hassle with selling the Volvo.

I had already research the BB value of the Volvo. It was 10 years old with less than 32K miles but it did have a couple of dings and needed a bit of body work so I was estimating around $4000 as a trade. The dealer came in at $3400. We weren't thrilled but I understood that this is a place where they make back a bit of the $. The came up to $3700 and I asked for the 3 accessories,
all weather mats, cargo tray and collapsible organizer. I figured I might get 2 of them but they gave all 3.

At this point we decided we had a good deal going. OTD after trade in plus tax and other fees we got the car for $24,185.

The finance guy was fun. We wouldn't take any of the add ons. He now started pointing out what could go wrong and why. We just said no.

And my insurance went down by $50.

I believe reading this forum helped me go in as an informed consumer. I didn't have the back and forth negotiations but I feel we did Good. I know I wouldn't have felt the same if I hadn't been following this forum Oh, and I am also getting a $50 certificated from Costco to be used at the dealership for any accessories or maintenance.

And again, I apologize for the length of this post.

birdie6 - Can you list what dealerships in Chicago area you dealt with? I've been lurking for past few weeks and would like to purchase before end of month.

I'm in Rockford area, but purchased my last vehicle from Chicago-Ray Buick and grew up in Orland Park. Going to get quotes from Rockford, Wisc -Janesville, Elgin, and a few Chicago dealers.

    Looking for AWD EX-L

You did not finance through HONDA correct?

    Thanks

I did finance so I could get the flex cash. You can payoff the loan after the 1st payment with no penalties.

I am really confused now. Bridie6 receives total discount of 2016$. He didn't receive 1000$ less from invoice price at all. Did he receive on top of 2016$ discount?

For my Honda CR-V AWD EX, I receive 770$ less from invoice price + 1250 Rebate = 2020.... Is this a same discount? Only difference is that I have to trade in. If he says o.k without trade in, does it look like a good deal or am I missing something?

    sales price: 24750 (including destination),
    Doc Fees: 190,
    Plate transfer fee:120,
    Rebate 1,250,
    Taxes:1760

    Thanks,

    plala,

I will look into your deal tomm.. please explain what the 1250 rebate is .. I have no clue what your posting. The only rebate you could receive is a 500 or 750 flex cash rebate to finance thru honda... its one or the other not both combined.. Call dealership and confirm all his prices...

When you find out from dealership what the 1250 rebate is we could breakdown your deal. Obviously if this dealers is giving you a 1250 rebate off vehicle price and is 700 below his cost this would be a very good deal.

Since I never heard of anybody or any dealers getting /giving a 1250 rebate... I say it smells fishy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please call dealership and get the exact breakdown of this deal down to the penney. Leave no stone unturned. Make sure dealer included the destanation charge of 830 into this deal.

In my earlier post to you I posted dealers may have the flex cash incentive. If they have flex cash its either 500 or 750 dollars if you finance thru honda ..

When you repost your deal post this info:

Agreed selling price..... does it include the dest/ charge of 830?

    Dealerships doc fee charge ?

Did you recieve flex cash? how much is dealer offering?

Are there any other rebates dealer is giving you? And what are they for.

dealer is giving you 1400 for your toyota leave this out..

Dont post................... taxes, tags, dmv fees................ dont need that info..

Is plala rebate of $1250 = dealer cash of $500 + flex cash of $750 for financing through Honda?

    Dealer Cash

    no1b4me1,

This very well may be the case and would make sense if its true. Whats nice about this Scenario is dealerships that are offering a 750 flex cash incentive and dealer cash of 500 can help us get pricing well under 2k below invoice with dealerships looking to move CRV's off there lot or make final end of the month sales quota's. Reported Honda sales for the past 4 months are down with honda Accord and CRV model's. I have helped atleast 6 members with buying the Subaru Forester over the CRV due to pricing with honda dealerships. I think it might even be a better choice in vehicle. The Forester gets top honors in its class from CR reports and Edmunds reviews. The new redesign Forester model is bigger inside than CRV, near tops with gas mileage and carlike comfort, seating 5............................... Its sure worth a look.

brian125 - what would be a "good deal" on AWD EX-L ....Invoice 28K (base 27,170 + Dest 830). If finance through Honda & dealer rebate cash.

So far lowest quote is 26,601 with no negotiations (but quote says "To receive this price you must qualify for conquest and loyalty"). So looking for clarification from dealer on that and also quote says "does not include accessories". So want to make sure there are no dealer accessories added.

I want to shoot for at least a target price of 26K plus tax, title, lic, and doc fee....basically $750 under invoice plus ($1250 of rebates for total 2K under invoice). Should my target be lower?

    Thanks
