I am ready to make my offers to dealer, EX List $23,498, add Destination of $790, less Dealer Cash of $500, and further 1,500 off invoice for a total of $22,228... good?? I will not pay for any dealer documentation prep etc except for the sales taxes, DMV and Title

Most Dealers will add there doc fee charge onto the bill of sale after your agreed selling price. By knowing how much dealers doc fee charge is and then adding that price onto your below invoice price makes it a wash on the bill of sale.

EXample: If my target price to buy is 1000 below dealers invoice and i know the dealer has a 300 doc fee... I adjust my price to buy at 1300 below invoice countering that charge on the final bill of sale.. If you dont then dealer is taken back 300 dollars off your deal.

Planning to purchase Accord Sport CVT by June 30. Home base is Portland, OR. I haven't seen much of any posting from the Pacific Northwest, so I'm going to start my negotiations at 1500 + Doc Fee below invoice. Lurking for awhile in this forum has given me quite a bit of negotiating power, so thanks everyone, especially brian125.

Thanks brian. Looks like the doc fee is around 699 for the dealers around here..So I should target somewhere between 25570 to 26070 considering 1500-2000 below invoice including doc fee....right?

Depends on where you're in CA, but I haven't negotiate yet, but I just inquire about the price and one dealer came back with $26270 includes handling/destination fee for EX-L w/NAVI. Mind you, no haggling yet.

Yes ..........Compensate for those high doc fee's. Try to recoup the whole 699 doc fee charge by lowering your asking price.

I have no real complaints. Some minor things.... Overall the Best Accord yet.

My daughter who leaves up in Boston was surprised as it was my gift to her this past Jan, for graduating with a Mba/ Phd in college.

My only gripes with the new Accord were: Parking brake in the middle consult, Terrible under powered alpine radio system. Music sound like its comming out of a tin can. These speakers are Fosters....... A terrible speaker. Lane watch system is useless in city driving. Bells constantly going off if you change lanes. I turned Lws off the first day and never put it back on. The heater and a/c unit is alot quieter than previous models as is road noise inside the cabin. Gas mileage is pretty good with this vehicle. Seats are comfortable. When you go back they recline down.... kind off odd.

Brian - Used your fantastic advice and negotiation tips. In Dallas, bought today 2014 Honda Accord EX-L V4 no navigation for $25120 + tax & license & docs. I believe this would be about $1700 below invoice. I had very straightforward no-nonsense experience with Rusty Wallis Honda (John Whiteside) in Dallas.

    Humongous thanks

I got a really good deal. I'm sure I could have nickel and dimed them down on each option/feature even more. But, I'm happy with my purchase. I bought a Honda Accord Sport CVT 2014 with the pro pack, Window tinting, the special rear view mirror, the Honda Care Warranty 8yr/120K with $0 deductible, auto butler for the paint (10 treatments over 5 years), 1.9% financing and all of the taxes and licensing for a total final price of $25,600 in Northern California.

How I did it is as follows:

    1. First, I went in and asked for Costco pricing on the car. They said the base car would be between $22K and $23K (with no options/accessories, licensing, warranty).
    2. I went to Carsdirect, and they quoted $22,122 for the base car.
    3. I went to another dealership that quoted me $24K; however, they told me the sales trick a different dealership would use. First, the sales guy said they would charge a higher interest rate and use a down payment to make you pre-pay the interest so that you are buying down the interest. Then, they would also charge you $3000 or $3500 for a non-Honda Care warranty that would only allow you to get your work done through their dealership.
    4. Armed with that info, I went to the Internet to find the best pricing on the Honda Care Warranty. A dealer in Massachusetts sells it for $1230 for 8yr/120K $0 deductible. (I keep my cars for 10+ years).
    5. I found truecar.com, and the prices were even lower -- base car for $20,800. I put my info into the website, and I had 3 dealers email me/call me immediately. I negotiated options/components/pricing/interest rates between the dealers and had one of them send me an itemized price quote showing they were selling me the car for $20,600 with Honda Care for $1595. Another dealer that was 45 minutes away offered the car at $20,476. I don't need to drive 45 minutes to save a hundred bucks. So, armed with this info, I walked over to the local dealer outside of where I work and approached the Internet Sales manager. His eyes about popped out of his head. He said their Internet price was $21,200 (or something like that). He couldn't quite match that bottom line price, but he might be able to work something with the options and other items I might want.
    6. I told him that if he was really close, we could do business -- like higher priced car, but reduce price on the add-ons, warranty, that would work for me.
    7. He called me up and said that he was giving me extra items -- like window tinting and that his price was $200 below the quote that I provided, and he couldn't drop Honda Care. He talked me into Auto Butler at $400 when I went in. But, the dealer had an incentive of an additional $200 that weekend because they had a goal to sell 40 cars that weekend, so I needed to purchase that weekend.
    8. I went in, and he was straight up and didn't try to sneak anything in on me or use any strange tactics. The finance manager was lower pressure on gap insurance and all of the other stuff. Other than $400 auto butler, I didn't purchase anything else.
    9. I did have to put $2800 down, and my payment is $403 a month.

All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. I probably could have nickle and dimed them down another few hundred dollars or found a dealership that would give me everything at the lowest possible price. As it is, the finance manager's screen was visible to me. I could see that they showed a $2400 loss on the vehicle in the bottom corner. I like to keep jobs local and purchase local -- and I am okay with them making a little profit on the extras. I didn't feel totally gouged -- I got a good deal, they made a profit. It's all good.

  • altinkeraltinker Member Posts: 7

I want to add one final thing that some dealers are doing. So, good thing I bought local and didn't make the 45 min/hour drive to a dealer. They work you down to the lowest base car price. If you check yelp, the complaints are that they bundle accessories and things like alarms and such that they won't remove. So, you go down to the dealership, and they say they don't have that base Accord Sport CVT for the $20,476 they quoted you because the alarm and other options are already installed. They aren't going to remove it for you. Further, if you say, I want the 0.9% financing (unfortunately, it is an either/or -- either $500 off or 0.9% financing), then they bring the price up $750 and then want to charge you 4.9% financing. So, check Yelp reviews before you travel to a dealer. I found my dealer to be straight up with no bait and switch.

  • chiu2chiu2 Member Posts: 5

Altinker...can you give out the name of your dealership?

  • altinkeraltinker Member Posts: 7

Folsom Lake Honda was the best dealership. They were straight forward with me and provided a great deal. They didn't bait and switch or sneak in extra accessories or charges. Ask for Lee Schwartz and/or Ryan Anderson.

WARNING - USING TRUECAR FOR YOUR PURCHASE. If you think using TRUECAR is a good thing - please reconsider! If you use TRUECAR's "best no hassle price" - not only are you giving them $300 on your purchase, but you are probably overpaying by at least another $1,200 to $1,500. Approximately 2 years ago TRUECAR decided not to show the discount auto sales which the high volume dealers typically offer. They did it because the non-discounter dealerships threatened to boycott the use of their service. I suggest this is a cowardly act which shows just how much TRUECAR cars about the people which use its ripoff service. So, instead, use EDMONDS or KBB or even TRUECAR to see what the price of a car should start at - then negotiate it down - always remember the TRUECAR price always contains their Fee of $300. So give the CEO of TRUECAR the gift that he deserves - not one penny! Have a wonderful memorial day everyone - happy car shopping.

I reached out to dealers through Truecar, and some of them came back with prices that were a few hundred lower than what Truecar said the price would be. Good to know!

Brian--Congratulations to you and your daughter. You must be very proud. I am also considering a V6 w/Nav. The wrinkle is that it is a left-over 2013. What would you think a target price would be for a 2013? Also, if invoice for a 2014 is 29,326 is the target price 26,500?

  • bethpabethpa Member Posts: 35

Not to highjack a post but I also have the same questions about leftover 2013 Accords. What should the target be on those? I see $1500-2000 below invoice on 2014's as the latest target but what about 2013's? More importantly, why do dealers have 2013 Accords? One of regional dealers has 4 cyl EX-L NAVI cars (6 today) and while I was looking for a 2014 EX-L with a target price around $24,500, I'd be interested in a leftover 2013 with NAVI only if it was lower than a standard 2104 EXL. Anyone have thoughts on the 2013's on the lots? Thanks

I will look into a Target price and post but remember here is what you have to weight when buying a vehicle that is 1 AND 1/2 going on a 2 yr model.

If THIS VEHICLE IS STOLEN OR TOTALED IN A ACCIDENT WHAT IS IT WORTH AT THAT TIME. You buy a 2013 leftover for 3,500 below its invoice price but it has now depreciated 5k............... Get my point. I understand it is like new but you want to recoupe your costs in the event of the above. Dont forget your Ins,. company still views this car as a almost 2 yr old model. Thats how they will Appraise it. Another factor that lowers your Ins price is. ? How much Ins. Deductible do you carry? 250/ 500/ 1000. etc That number is also taken off the top.

Reasons to consider a 2013 leftover:

Getting a great price compared to a 2014. The 2015 models will be out in 3 months. Making the 2014 leftover prices attractive to buyers.

Buying a 2013 means .................you would not be looking to get rid of this vehicle after 5 years. otherwise you are losing money for sure.

Just a few things to think about!!!!!!!

My daughter is a God send for sure. She will some day help with many breakthroughs in Cancer research, Stem cells, etc in the Medical field............ We are very proud of her. TY>

    2014 exl v-6 w nav invoice= 29,371 plus 790 dest/charge= 30,161.

Everybody buying a Accord this month should have a target price of 1200 to 2000 below. With 2000 being a top price. Most buyers wont get near this price.

    AEJK1,

Depending on your area........... your target price for a 2014 model for end of June should be low end 1200 below dealers invoice to as much as 2000 below after you take dealers doc fee's into consideration.. State taxes and dmv charges are regulated . That we have to pay. Work on getting the lowest possible selling price. Know each dealerships doc fee charge so you could counter each charge by lowering the selling price.

On any 2013 model. 3800 dollars off should be the mendoza line to consider buy or pass. . If i'm looking to make a score on a 2013 I want to buy between 4500, plus or I walk. Let the dealer sell that model to a sucker buyer. A vehicle that probably has been sitting for almost 1 1/2 years.. A color less desireable. In Sept 2015 models will be arriving on lots.

I bought my 2013 EXL, V-6 back in Feb, 2013. I asked several dealers 8 months later what they would give me if I traded it in. A 3000 dollar loss was the best price I could get with only 1800 miles on the vehicle.. Imagine now what they would offer. Think long and hard about buying a 2013 model. Dealers know they will sell that car to a un- educated buyer. Thats why they may not come down in price.................... BEWARE ...Good luck

    All Forum members,

Please post your State, and name of dealership , Agreed Selling price, w Doc fee's so the other members could try for a similar deal this month.

We are noticing alot of pricing at 1500 below to almost 2k below. This is where the forum members should be price wise.. By months end people negotiating hard will make really good deals.

Area's including CT, NY ,NY PA, DE, NC,SC. may only see a 1500 below invoice price at best number. 1200 to 1500 below are good numbers in these states. Buying closer to months end may change this number in your favor..

Brian, you've been a tremendous wealth of knowledge here, but I think you may be a bit optimistic on how much dealers are willing to budge on 2013 Accord models. I purchased a 2013 Accord Touring in March 2014. I originally offered $28,000 for the car and they looked at me like I was crazy. The "official" price I paid was $30,400 at Mahwah Honda in Mahwah, NJ, but I did get $400 Flex Cash and they threw in an extra $500 for my 2004 Accord with a busted transmission when they saw I was ready to walk. It was not an old car, having been manufactured in August 2013. (Had it been manufactured September 2013, it would've been a 2014 model.)

In hindsight, I think it was a good deal, although I probably could've saved another $500-$1000 had I played the full game. Considering they had my old car in their shop and knew I was over a barrel, I think I was treated pretty fairly.

Even on the major car sites, fair market prices for 2013 Accords are about $700 - $800 less than 2014 models. I'm also starting to think I made the right decision by getting a 2013 instead of a 2014. I would've gone crazy having an auto dimming mirror that couldn't be turned off and the 2013 has a neat inside trunk handle that the 2014 model doesn't have. And my car came in the color I wanted (black/black) and has the neat rubber piece in the cubby that some '13 models didn't have.

So far I'm loving the car and the depreciation really isn't an issue for me since I'm going to have the car for at least 10 years like I had my '04. I figure in 10+ years, the difference between the value of a 2013 Accord and the 2014 Accord will be negligible.

Thanks to you Brian and everyone else who actively participates in this board for all of the great information!

Zhelder , Sorry but i disagree with you on some extent but i understand your position and why you bought a 2013. Yes you did leave over 1k on the table. Nj dealers are terrible with pricing. You did the best you could out in N.J. plus you like the 2013 model opposed to something on the 2014 option wise .

Here is the fact on your model. Your Accord is considered a 1yr old model.. As of Jan,1 2014. Ins. companies and car values are figured on that car as just that and not manufactored last August 2013.. Thats why i always say weigh depreciating values to the sale price of the prior yr to the new year's sale price. . . You would need to buy a 1 yr accord / 2013 model at 3k below invoice to break even in the event of a totaled or stolen vehicle. Otherwise keeping the car a long time wont matter even if you you spent a few more dollars.

I know Honda Dealers are not budging on 2013 prices. Why??? because they always find someone to buy at there price.. Supply and demand. you cant imagine how many emails i recieve with folks asking if getting 1500 off a year old vehicle is worth it.. This is why Dealers dont care about what you know.. herb is getting it next week .. LOL. You even said it.... You easily left up to 1k on the table buying a 2013 model. Considering your position and living in NJ you did what you had to do.

The reason why honda dealers refuse to sell lower is they know with 4 leftovers 2013 they will sell at a price in there favor. Honda dealers always do. For those reasons I mentioned above in my prior post I will advise you to walk away and buy the 2014 model. . The best deal I know of came from Criswell honda in Md. Buyer bought a 2013 Accord exl model Jan, 28th for 3400 below invoice. Dealer was not going another penny lower. Buying The 2014 model the dealer wanted 1000 below invoice. There is a 2400 difference where the buyer took the 2013 model. So if he crashed the car in feb,2014 he came out not losing any deprciation money... but buying a 2013 model in jan,2014 at 2200 dollars below dealers invoice he wont recoupe his depreciation costs. These are the factor's you need to way. If you plan on selling within 5 years its best to opt for the 2014 model instead of a vehicle already consider 1 and 1/2 years old.

If I want to buy a 2014 Accord today. I could buy one for 2k below invoice. It makes no sense to buy a 2013 model for 700 or 800 less than a 2014. None. Especially this time of the year June going into July.... Hope i made some sense about pricing and recouping depreciation money

    hi brian,
I been following the posts and I'd like to ask if I have the right price. They quoted for me 2014 accord EX tinted for 22,306 and OTD is 24k. What do you think about this? I'm at Dallas at Lewisville dealership.
