The manual calls for variable speed for the first 500 miles. Oil changes and filter at 6k intervals, but I always do it at 3k (just did the first one). Regarding type of oil, our dealership said that they recommend Quaker State. If you use this consistently (and have documentation), the 100,000 mile warranty is extended to 250,000 miles (also assumes you follow their oil replacement plan). They gave it to us in writing, so it's not just a line (I hope). Since we keep our cars forever, I'm using Quaker State for the first time ever. Has anyone else come across this "oil plan?"
If you have such a warranty, then it does sound great.
I don't think I could keep something for 100K. I get bored with it too easily. I've put 42K on the Buick in 18 months and have a hard time imagining putting another 60K on it over the next two years. I've spent $3800 over the past 10 years purchasing four beater cars and probably as much in repairs. All but one have had working A/C. (The one was not equipped.) All lasted for three years or more except the one totalled less than thirty days after purchase. That one was half of the $3800, the best deal was the '79 Fairmont purchased for $100. It cost $1100 to drive in purchase, maintenance and repair after selling it for $500.
I don't think a 250K warranty would be good for me! They probably don't pay out much since few people keep vehicles that long.
Where I live (Columbus, Ohio), there are a lot of Kia dealers - four, at last count. There are a lot of good deals. The law of supply and demand seems to work well when you have more than one supplier.
Here are some examples of deals in the Columbus area:
* I bought my fully loaded $24,100 MSRP Sedona EX Misty Blue/Silky Beige two-tone color for $22,900 not including tax and title. * A dealer, Ricart, is offering 0.0% financing (for 36 months, if my memory is correct). * Another dealer had advertised Sedona EXs for $800 off MSRP.
Has anyone noticed that there is another Sedona message board? That seems odd considering this one already exists.
I thought the Edmunds people usually put "read only" by duplicate message boards and then refered them to the existing one. It would be nice to keep all of the 2002 Sedona information at one sight. Was anything else done about the Sedona Club?
The deal did not go down. They offered me $14000 for my fully equipted "99" villager Estate with 39000 mi. My bank will loan more than that on it. The dealers in KC are asking $20000 for them and the kelly blue book is $16000. So I walked. When they get the market flooded (and they will) then maybe I'll reconsider talking to them.
Took delivery of my new Sedona today. I can't tell you how impressed I am with Kia Direct in La Crosse Wi. Every detail I questioned was addressed and taken car of by the GENERAL MANAGER! I drove it home 150 miles taking all the back county roads to keep my speed variated. Very impressive power! Rolls a little more than I like, but they told me out front the tires were not great as in most new vehicles. The stereo is outstanding, and the radio tuner is excellent (made by Alpine) The moonroof is great on a beautiful blue sky day. My butt got a little sore on the leather but that happens with me every time I get a different vehicle, I'll get used to seats, have to brake 'em in. Another interesting thing is the dealer told me I could do my own maintainance and not jepardize the warranty as long as I document everything and show reciepts for work I don't do. I'll take care of the work up to the 30K, and let them do that one, it's really the first major service. I had a very small wind leak in my passenger window, seemed to come and go. Other than that so far I am very pleased, time will tell " the rest of the story".
I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but I certainly wouldn't give a perfectly good mini-van away. I'm sorry also that you wasted your trip down here. Did you atleast venture by the Bass Pro Shop/Wildlife Museum?
Thanks McMOM, I just finished reading the entire owners manual. Lots of interesting stuff! Did you know your fog lights will only work if your headlights are on? Your electric defroster mirrors will only work if your rear window defroster switch is on. My Sedona does not have auto wipers (Canadian version DOES) but I do have the Auto headlights for what its worth. And I don't think any of the 12v plug-ins are live unless the vehicle is running or on "accessory" Hope you're enjoying your Sedona! I am intrigued by the lack of major or consistent problems posted on this board regarding the Sedona....that's a good sign. excelent3
I remember seeing some posts a while bac about the heating and a/c. I didn't think to much about it. I thought ours was working fine(heat). It's usually just the wife and I in the front and a grandkid or 2 in the second row and none of them have legs that reach the floor yet. The other night my wife was in the 2nd row captains chair and she complained how hot her legs were. Fan was only on 1, but did have it all the way on hot. Made me think of some earlier posts. Anyone have any thoughts.
YES! That is a design problem with the Sedona that Kia is "working on". My dealer was able to deflect that heat, so that it would not blow unless the rear heating was on!
The only other problem I have had that Kia is still "working on" is some hesitation from a warm start.
Too much heat is not much of a problem in January..... but believe me it is quite the problem in August!!
I love my Sedona and too, am surprised that their are not more "problems"
I wish there were a power lock/unlock located on the passenger side. (my only major gripe).
I read my owners manual last night and it stated that the chrome lock handle in the passenger door power locks all the doors including rear hatch. Sure enough I tried it this morning and that's exactly what it does! Now you know the "rest of the story"!
Was it as good for you as it was for me? Hope so. No need to be afraid. Koreans need to rewrite that manual...great detail, good manual, but lots of grammatical errors. Translation says funny things sometimes.
WOW> I had 2 people ask me about my Sedona today while I was out and about. I said,"Just Do It" take one for a drive. I can't wait till mine is broke in, so I can really drive this thing. Actually, when I put the tires on it I WANT, then I'll be able to DRIVE this thing. Excelent3
I went home and tried the power lock on the passenger side and it didn't work.
My Van came out in early August so maybe the first ones did not have that feature OR it is not working correctly. I am going to ask my dealer about it...
Can anyone advise me if I can get an auto car start with alarm, panic and the works put in...in place of the Kia solo key entry switch they gave us? I would like to be able to start the van up while I'm still in the house getting ready for work during those cold cold days? I love my ruby red/ silver combo EX, with ABS, Sunroof, leather. I fine that after a fill up, 20 miles later the fuel gauge moves down alot. Does anyon e have that problem. Also I have the same whinning sound , dealer changed the fuel pump to no avail, same noise. Can't give a true MPG yet. Have to give her a long ride. I wish I had the old service mgr. He made things happen. The new guy is bad news, just yes' you. I'm going back to the dealer at least once a month for little things to be done. Thanks to post 329 (hokum) about the sound problem, I'll go back and hound them again. Happy trails to all.
The gauge does go down fast on the top end. Once you are down to near empty, it seems like you can drive for another 100+ miles. I find this somewhat annoying, but have not bothered to deal with this. 5000+ miles and no concerns. My friends keep waiting for this van to crumble, but it ain't gonna happen. I bought the van the first of September and I couldn't ask for a better start.
In regards to your inquiry on installing remote start, alarm, entry in your Sedona I know of a company that can give you the answer. They have been in business over 25 years and can install anything in everything! Well, maybe not quite but they are very good at any after market accessory you may be entertaining. AMS Auto Marketing Services 1-608-274-7400, ASK FOR TIM. Even if they are not in your area, they can tell what system they would implement. They don't sell any junk and are very reasonable.
Also, I think the "average speed" readout is a laugher. Can anyone tell me if this feature has a practical, functional use or application? Better to have miles per gallon readout. When I get my customer survey I will mention this. I like the temperature readout and the miles till empty is OK. The CD storage is also a joke because you have to put the CD's in sideways =ing not being able to read the title of the CD! That little wire wrapped around th antenna is also kind tacky. Ever notice that? I can live with that because the tuner in the radio is excellent, if that has anything to do with the reception, I wouldn't know. I don't care for the large gaping holes left in the floor after you remove the middle seats, major dirt catcher, and uncomfortable when you are using the area for changing, putting skates on, etc. And those seats would be heavy for the average person to remove....no wonder they have WHEELS on them!
Congrats guys to anybody who owns a Sedona. It just won minivan of the year here in Canada(Motoring 2002) beating out the Honda Odyssey and Buick rendezvous. I have checked it out with my brother in law who will be taking delivery of his own Sedona this month. From what I could tell by inspecting every bit of it, including the suspension and underbody, is that it far exceeds any other minivan I have seen in build quality and overall worthiness. What I am hoping is the powertrain components do end up being as solid as the body seems to be. Any mechanical problems so far? BTW just a little trivia, the Sedona engine is a Hyundai engine based on a Mitsubishi design. The Sedona minivan sold overseas has a 2.5L DOHC Land Rover engine. I would have loved to see that version make it over here.
Jkobty- I believe Sedona was an entry but not the winner, which was Honda Ody.Please corect me if I am wrong or provide more info.
Read the all the posts on this board to see for yourself if there are any ongoing problems. Really, none to speak of, compared to the rest of the players in the market. We don't have a "Sedona 2002 problems" board, and hopefully never will.
It all makes sense. Kia needed to address reliability issues in a big way. They had to make a targeted move which would begin the trail of redemption concerning reliabilty. They made a tactical, gutsy move. Duke it out in the highly competive, brutal, minivan sector. And why not. Minivan buyers are ultra picky and uncompromising. They had to make a heck of a statement. They did their homework and did it well, and the end result is the Sedona. This Sedona is a winner, hands down.
The naysayers will always be out there, meanwhile I'm enjoying a the ride at one hell of a price! They should have named it the "Steal of the Year" award! Excelent3
I am talking about the Canadian Motoring 2002 which is similar to Car and Driver or MotorTrends in the USA. And the Sedona DID WIN first place for 2002 minivans beating the Odyssey. Says a lot about how truthful and objective American reviewers are! NOT! Probably hell would freeze over before a KIA wins anything in the states.
One thousand pardons. I agree with you, half the reviews I read make inaccurate and disputeable claims. For instance, EPA on Sedona is 15/20mpg. Most that own Sedonas would agree that the fuel economy is much better than this. Iv'e read reviews that it is underpowered. Who are they kidding, the Sedona runs even keel to Honda Ody any day! I've done a few searches and can't find anything on this. If you have info on where I can read up on this award I would greatly appreciate it. Please forward it on this board. Excelent3
Since many Sedona EX owners may have small children with car seats, I thought it would be useful to post my experiences so far with the second row captains chairs, fwiw.
There was a reference earlier in this forum (I think) to protecting the seats from the sharp edges on some car seats by using plastic pads on the seats. I purchased a set of 4 floormats from BJ's for $20. I put the square mats, fabric down, on the seats -fits like a glove. I then put a bath towel folded up to drape the seat. In a few years, the floormats can be re-purposed, enhancing the ROI. The bath towel is easily removed and washed, and protects against footprints, catches crumbs and absorbs spills.
Foremost, I hope everyone with car seat circumstances found the description in the manual regarding the no-slack/always-on retract configuration on the seat belts. (I wish GM had this feature on the cars we've had so far.)
The first step is to belt the seat in loosely and then pull the seat belt __ALL THE WAY OUT__ of the retract housing- you should hear a ratcheting sound as it retracts back in, and you should be unable to pull it out further as it retracts. (The belt will not reset until it is allowed to fully retract.)
Second, slide the chair to the full rear of the car position.
Third, grab, twist, heave, and sit on the car seat until there is no slack in the seat belt / do whatever it is you do to make sure the car seat is affixed to the vehile, including the LATCH strap.
Fourth, allow the seat to slide forward on its rails about two inches or so. Next to the non-release seatbelt feature, this was the best part to me. The seat is heavy enough and has enough torque in the spring mechanism to really put tension on the belt and glue the seat to the car!
Safe travels!
(Disclaimer: I have not had this configuration inspected or approved by any authority on car seat safety. In no way is this information to be considered the definitive procedure for ensuring proper installation of the car seat. Circumstances will vary. Always refer to the vehicle owner's manual and car seat manufacturer instructions for definitive information. While I am not a lawyer, I do not wish to be sued. However, I could probably play one on TV after sleeping at a Hilton. )
As some have said, it seems like every day you own a Sedona you find something neat that wasn't expected.
I have had X10 in my home for over 3 years and I just programmed one of the buttons to turn on the living room light. I thought I was going to have to obtain the vehicle interface, but it turns out the antenna appliance unit from X10/RCA is all you need with the option in the van.
Motoring 2002 is a TV program. I believe it is only available in Canada on TSN(The Sport Network)which is based in Toronto but there is a website for Motoring 2002 and here it is:
Anyone interested in posting their absolute HONEST MPG on the HIGHWAY please post. I will gather first 20 responses and continue to post poll until we get that number. Please be straight so we can get a good assessment what the average is. Please post highway mpg and mileage on vehicle. Thanks! Excelent3
Total milage on my EX is 7500. On my last 500 mile round trip, I got 22.1 mpg out and 20.3 back. Funny thing is I averaged 75mph out and only 70 mph back??. Let me add this: On a 4700 mile trip (mostly highway miles) starting with only about 300 total miles, I averaged 21.5 mpg. This was a trip from San Antonio TX to RI and return so you can judge the type driving.
I'm still having handling problems- left pull and constant correction to keep straight; got my fourth service appointment tomorrow!! Also, my Sedona, delivery date September 19, doesn't have the all-lock-from-the-right-door feature mentioned in a recent post. I tried it with ignition switch on and off, but the chrome lever only actuates the right door.
Thanks for your being the first to offer MPG input. On your pulling situation, have them check for 1) tire pressure 2) separation of tread or bad ply 3) wheel alignment. They could switch tires in the front, if it pulls the other way that may tell the story. I went and checked my passenger door inside chrome lock handle and it definitely locks all the doors, ignition off. I'm sorry yours does not have this feature, must have been added later, but as long as you are in for service question that also! Excelent3
I have 3500 miles on my Sedona LX. MPG on the highway is 24, 15 in town. Since I drive mostly in town, sure wish this mileage was better! If you force those extra drops of gas into the tank to even up gallons or $, I've actually had mileage decrease to 12.5!!! I don't do that anymore.
Completely off the subject: My LX came without a roof rack (one of those "need a vehicle now and if you don't buy what's there now it won't be available tomorrow" scenarios). My question is, we have an old Sears car-top carrier - the white top with grey bottom. It used to go on the Caravan fine without a roof rack by fitting the metal bracket at the end of straps under the rail that ran along both sides of the roof just above the windows. There is no such thing on the Sedona (and most new models). How do you attach the carrier? If a roof rack is needed, what kind do I get? Appreciate any thoughts from you.
Thanks for being #2 on the MPG survey, and any contribution to the board is welcome, all can benefit. Most manufacturers do not recomment "topping" the tank for that reason, it can actually damge the fuel system according to my ford Winstar manual!
Sounds like the classic gutter mount setup to me. I did some checking into the roof rack situation myself. You can obtain ratcheting or manual tie down straps at almost any Home Depot or harware store, secure right to the roof rack itself. Also, Yakima is in the process of developing a mounting system for their racks as we speak, if enough people call them and ask for it. Yakima @ 1-888-925-0703. This way you can use your old bars with the new mounts they develop.
Sometimes I'm tempted to buy a '95 Caravan just so I can have a minivan with real rain gutters again. But my yak towers are working ok I suppose. My guess is that only some "clips" need to be designed, not new towers for the Sedona. Steve Host SUVs, Vans and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
Thanks for your recommendations, excelent3. I have done most of what you suggest-see my posts #306 and 354. The van is in the shop now. My problem was confirmed by the service manager who did another test drive. He is keeping the car until tomorrow.
One more thing that is different in the Sedona-- You cannot get a key made at th usual places; the Walmart or other source replacement keys won't fit into the key hole. I just got a new spare at the dealer, but it cost me $10.88!!!
Hope it works out for you. Maybe tie rod ends? They should be able to FIGURE IT OUT. For the hassle I would have put the squeeze on them to GIVE you the blank key. I asked for a blank key as part of the deal. They gave me a blank KIa key and I went down to the hardware store and had them grind it for me for $1.50.
Geeez, I would get them to offer you some kind of concession, coupon, etc for your hassle! Be reasonable but assertive. My Windstar '2000 is a good example: When it arrived it had dirt in the paint in several spots. They offered to re-paint, a brand new $26,000 van! I was not happy. They scheduled me for oil change on Labor Day ( we specifically asked them "Are you Open?") and we went in, they were closed. Then they scheduled me for 12:00 noon during the week, we went in , they "don't do oil changes over the lunch hour". That was the last straw. I threatened to give them the van back(I know the GM personally) and I very politely told him where he could put it (Hint: a very dark place where the sun doesn't shine) After that episode they asked me what they could do for me to make me a happy camper. Bear in mind they are trying to win me back as a " valued customer" after my mint 95 Taurus LX wagon 3.8 engine blew up! 1a) Got another $750 off price 1)I got lifetime tire rotation and balancing 2) lifetime brake work 3) Lifetime transmission changes 3) Lifetime oil changes 4) once a year they detail the car inside and out. Moral of the story: If you don't ask you don't get, Dont' be afraid to ask! I always ask for more then what I expect they could do, and then I settle for what I really wanted in the first place. If they want you as a repeat they have to make it worth your while. You lived up to your end of the bargain...You bought the vehicle. This morning I had to schedule a defective tie rod end at only 15,000 miles and a recall blower motor. They will GIVE me a loaner vehicle.
I will NEVER, EVER, EVER own a FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily) again! And thats the "rest of the story." Excelent3
I just returned from my vacation to PA. We drove nearly 3900 miles in our Sedona...with 2 kids and a whole bunch of CHRISTmas gifts. With the exception of a nail in a tire....absolutely no problems.
We got 21.8 mpg on the way up to PA, and 21.4 on the way back to TX. And I spent most of my time in the passing lane, at 75 MPH ++. Handled great, and the comfort for all passengers was exceptional.
We now have 9800 miles on the van, and these are my only negative comments:
1. Rear heater...sweat or freeze. No thermostat control, and it gets toasty for rear passengers very quickly. Cut the rear heat, and the rear passengers freeze. Temp control does not control rear heat.
2. Storage space must be managed. If you think you will have a lot of gear on return trip, remove a seat.
3. Engine still whines like an old GM pick-up. Dealer swears it "is normal".
4. Paint is very fragile. Small bumps WILL chip paint.
Thank You for being #3 on the officially unofficial Sedona MPG Survey! In the future I will ask for city mpg's also. In addition, being that we are asking for the mpg's during the winter months, and realizing that most Sedonas are not even close to being broke in, I think it would be reasonable to assume even better results down the road. I agree a separate (functioning!) rear heater temperature control would be beneficial no doubt. Glad you had a great holiday trip.
Anyone interested in posting their absolute HONEST MPG HIGHWAY/City please post. I will gather first 20 responses and continue to post survey until we get that number. Excel, I'm glad to see y'all are liking your Sedona vans, and gathering a good following it appears! I just thought I'd surf over and say a friendly "Howdy!!" and then swim back over to my regular haunts.
Thanks for the friendly "Howdy". When you're ready to trade that Mazda Mpv in for a Sedona we'll be here awaitin fer ya! I know some of you Mazda boys would love to have the power of our engine in your van. I checked out the torque range in the new MPV motor and it peaks at 3000 rpms...awesome! You won't have to wait to much longer, until then, Happy Zoom,Zoom,Zooming (:>)) Excelent3
I did a quick and dirty MPG survey about two months ago. For more data you can go back to these postings, there were only about 5 data points though. The conclusion, EPA city mileage is about correct at 15-16. Highway mileage is way above EPA at 24-25 mpg. I will be interested to see if this holds up. Thanks.
Excel, thanks for the info. But I have no roof rack to tie anything down to - no bars, nothing. What kind of rack should I be looking for? Do I need a rack at all? I have heard you can attach the bracket at the end of the strap of the carrier to the roof of the car itself by going under the rubber weather stripping above the windows and doors. This does not seem very secure to me and seems it would damage the rubber or car. Thoughts on this? Thanks!
You have an LX Model. I don't know if there is a channel on both sides of the roof ON TOP that has a hard plastic strip in it or not. My Previa has this and with the right towers from Yakima I was able to utilize my racks or "poles" from my previous setup which was a gutter mount set up. As you, I would be real hesitant to use the latter format you described, could cause damage you would regret. Check your roof out and see if you have any kind of channel up there, which would be a convex valley running from front to back on both sides. If there is, there is a good possibility something would be available from Yakima. If not, I don't know what to tell you, wish I could help more. Maybe someone else reading this post may have some input. The other option is obtaining a hitch reciever mounted cargo carrier. Many available, and are usually $100 or less. Class III hitch required, because you need the 2" receiver opening....it's available from Drawtite, for about $135 plus T-One Connector flat four wiring, $35. I tow alot, and this is a great setup to be able to put a Class III hitch versus a Class II, ( which is also available for the Sedona)on a mini-van. Good Luck, Excelent3
I wanted to make folks aware that there are Class II, the smaller size receiver, cargo carriers available. The best prices I have found ( there is very little available at this time) on hitches and cargo carriers are at Etrailer.com. Excelent3
Well, 1975 miles and I have my first problem. While driving to church last night the oil pressure idiot light came on. I stopped and checked the oil it was between the F and L marks, but more towards L so I added some. Now it goes out while I'm driving, but when I'm stopped with it in gear like at a stop light it comes on. It figures, we plan on leaving early tomorrow morning for a weekend in Niagra Falls. Well, I'll stop whining now. I'll let you all know what it turns out to be.

The naysayers will always be out there, meanwhile I'm enjoying a the ride at one hell of a price! They should have named it the "Steal of the Year" award! Excelent3
which is similar to Car and Driver or MotorTrends in the USA. And the Sedona DID WIN first place for 2002 minivans beating the Odyssey. Says a lot about how truthful and objective American reviewers are! NOT!
Probably hell would freeze over before a KIA wins anything in the states.

"It may only be a Kia, but it is comfortable, practical and brilliant value for money" (diesel model reviewed).

Unfortunately, the site is under construction at the moment.
It you want to find out more about TSN, you can go to

I'm still having handling problems- left pull and constant correction to keep straight; got my fourth service appointment tomorrow!! Also, my Sedona, delivery date September 19, doesn't have the all-lock-from-the-right-door feature mentioned in a recent post. I tried it with ignition switch on and off, but the chrome lever only actuates the right door.

He is keeping the car until tomorrow.
One more thing that is different in the Sedona-- You cannot get a key made at th usual places; the Walmart or other source replacement keys won't fit into the key hole. I just got a new spare at the dealer, but it cost me $10.88!!!
Everything else is wonderful. This is a good van.
As for MPG survey: 21.5 Highway, 14 city.
Kindest regards:
Hokum from Houston.
I agree a separate (functioning!) rear heater temperature control would be beneficial no doubt. Glad you had a great holiday trip.
Happy motoring Folks!

Just a friendly jab.
I would take a stick shift over a larger engine in my MPV!
