Indeed, don't walk across a busy urban highway. Park closer or call the authorities, who are trained and paid to deal with such risk.
There will be little to no charges, as at those speeds, it will be hard to prove anything could have been done to avoid it. Sometimes user error is at play for the victim, too.
I am still more scared of a probably untrained and arrogant R8 driver who is likely flying on daddy's money and will use the family lawyer to dodge justice, should they err.
A 19-year old woman was killed trying to be a good samaritan in San Diego on the 94 East I believe a week or two ago. She witnessed a car crash, decided to help out, crossed the freeway, and ended up getting hit by someone not paying attention, ended up on the oncoming lanes over the center divide, and died before having a chance to be taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Jeep Patriot that probably hit her at 55-75 MPH scares me more than an R8 driver racing some bikes. They said alcohol wasn't involved.
As a side note, I'll teach my daughter that the freeways of CA are much too dangerous to get out on by foot, and you'd be much better off just dialing 911 with the fancy tech of new cars these days.
What are the chances this driver gets off without any charges?
I’d kill for 2400! I just got the reassessment from my addition and I am now at about $7500 for a 4 bed / 2 bath rancher.
Best part about it is, they back billed for one month last year and all this year. I am gonna have one hell of an escrow shortage next year! I guess I better send an extra $100 a month to offset it.
I'll kill for $7,500, ours is just north of $10k. But to be honest they have a special assessment that paid for the infrastructure when the subdivision was built and that is set to go away either next year or the year after that. When that happens we will drop to somewhere in the mid 7k range.

Isn't there a big problem when comparing property tax bills? Don't different states find various entities in different ways?
E.g., Ohio finds schools with voted local taxes for building as well as operating funds, BUT there is state money that comes back to local districts from the state--which the state gets from sales tax and income taxes.
The schools mentioned are vocational schools as well as local public and two year voc/coll prep schools.
To compare state to state, is total tax bill the better comparison?
The Ohio system you describe is the same here in NJ.
I believe my property tax rate is somewhere around 2.5% of assessed value. Problem is, my assessed value is above what I could actually sell it for! I fought for a reduction last year and got them to come down some, but still not to where it should be.
This is in addition to 7% sales tax on everything except groceries and meds and roughly 6% state income tax, with almost no allowed deductions. How that all relates to income is of course variable. My rough estimate for the impact on us is between about 15% of our gross.

Crossing the freeway?!!! I doubt the driver would, or should, be charged with anything. He/she has enough on their mind to punish them, anyway.
I think the culpability of the driver would depend to a great degree on the conditions. Where was the woman who was hit? Middle of the freeway or ? Day or night? Anything hampering visibility? Traffic conditions?
I have read a number of times about drivers hitting a law enforcement officer on the side of the road who was trying to help someone with a broken down car. Those cases seem pretty egregious.
But if you're just driving along, top a freeway overpass and there's a pedestrian in the middle of your lane, well ...
And the fact of the matter is, we all look away from time to time. Looking at a billboard that caught our eye, or checking out that fancy new car in the next lane over, adjusting the radio or the heater controls. And at 70 mph, you are traveling 103 feet per second, so ..
Pedestrians really need to stay off the freeways. Back in 2010, some not too bright construction worker walked out in the middle of the freeway carrying a stop sign. This in the face of heavy traffic traveling 70 to 75 mph.
I was the rear car in a 3 car pileup resulting from that. The local constabulary proclaimed that the construction worker had no liability, it was our fault for being unable to stop. Sometimes I think our "rules" about who is to blame in these situations is not completely realistic.
Often, people get out of their car when there is a fender bender on the highway. I do remember when I took my driving instructors course they said it was much safer to remain in the car than it was to wonder around at the side of the highway. People have a tendency to think your parked car is moving and come up from behind. If this is true, then walking across a highway is really asking for trouble.

I looked the location up on Google---that's a major freeway at that point---multi-lanes both ways. So the wrecked car was against the median guard rail and the good Samaritan was on the right shoulder apparently. So the Jeep plowed into both the Benz and the woman crossing the freeway.
So hard to say here---1:45 AM in the morning, possibly the wrecked car had no lights, woman crossing a major freeway at night.

Something doesn't add up. I know our 2014 C250 is fairly basic, no extras, but, when we bought it 2 years ago it had 12000 miles and it cost $25k. The difference between 52k and 12k miles is about 3 years of driving.
OK, sorry I have to print the whole ad but I have some questions; * Wouldn't it be well worth it to spend an extra $500 and get the Cruise instead of the Spark? * Can you really get a Malibu for $16700? * Can you get an Equinox, Camaro, or a Volt for around $20k or is there hidden charges (they admit to DOC fee)? * Would you pay $25000 for that Bolt?
The Equinox, all the trucks, Camaro, Malibu, Volt and Bolt are all used cars (service loaners). The Bolt price seems high but I have no clue what the market is, or what they are like. I don't think they are sold here. As it is is I only have seen a handful of Volts on the roads locally since we do not have govt incentives to buy them here. The Volt seems a good deal. I agree the Cruze is a no-brainer compared to a Spark, which is essentially a microcar.
I wonder if all those GM new car discounts apply to loaners and how what the warranty terms are. The mileage of these loaners is low, but if they were put in service say year ago (loaners tend to be driven on short trips), or even just six months, do you lose that period? It’s clearly a used car, so I’m sure different manufacturers can have different policies.
It's in Brazil. That's a place even more than the US or Canada where money will protect you from any real accountability for such actions. Justice isn't blind.
RCMP on the South Shore have charged a driver from Brazil with stunting.
Just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, an officer with Southeast Traffic Services clocked a car going 182 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 103 in East Chester. The vehicle was seized and the driver’s license was suspended for seven days.
Nova Scotia RCMP say speeding is one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions on the province’s highways.
Driver I drink iced tea during the day. That is our primary drink. Get some caffeine that way, though no clue how much compared to coffee. At one point, I used to take a diet soda (Dr. pepper, or Mt. Dew, but always diet) in the morning and maybe with lunch. Rarely drink soda these days though since it is not good for you.
so pretty much, when you coffee people are downing that, I probably have a glass of homemade iced tea. Unsweetened only. Sweet tea is nasty. I brew it, squeeze in a couple of fresh lemons, and call it done.
Stick, I am just kidding about tea. I like unsweetened iced tea as well. Tea can have 1/3rd to 1/2 the caffeine that coffee has. My wife buys tea decaffeinated tea which is a little harder to find but is available. I think Dr Pepper has no caffeine, but Mountain Due has quite a bit. One reason I like coffee is because it fills you up and has no calories....helps for dieting.
I think part of the joy of coffee is the warmth.......feels good - in this sometimes cold cruel world.

As QB noted, NJ makes up for nosebleed property taxes (much of which goes to schools, with plenty to all the home rule entities sucking off the public teat) by also having high sales tax and high income taxes. Pretty much the trifecta of screwing over residents.
speaking of housing costs, had the wife out looking at open houses again. At this point, it is looking hopeless. She is leaning toward just sticking it out in this place until we can retire and bail entirely from NJ. Moving to something a little smaller in a neighboring town for 5-10 years until we can retire is not looking good. Partly because she can't bring herself to get some place that is not as nice. Kinda like wanting to save money on a car. If you are used to a MB or BMW, a Chevy Cruze is hard to come to grips with.
She messed up my plan a couple months ago by unexpectedly getting a new job that requires she is in the office most days of the week. So the idea of moving to Delaware or some other cheap to live place is out. So, stay in a more expensive place and work a little longer (another year?) to make up for it. And as soon as we can retire, this place has to go!
I agreed (though we will keep poking around, just in case) but told her if the house is out, I am ramping up looking at cars instead of going to open houses!
If you are used to a MB or BMW, a Chevy Cruze is hard to come to grips with.
no offense! I should have qualified that as any economy car. The Cruze being a fine automobile. So could have inserted a Corolla, Nissan, anything comparable.

A lot of the Midwest and California aren't that different really.
at least we got good schools out of the deal, the reason we moved where we did. So both kids are in a good position. And a lot cheaper than private schools. I just don't need the schools any longer.
Stick, just a few thoughts to ponder; * Our home in the north is 2400 sq ft, the Florida home is 1400. We don't miss the extra space. We can do all the things we need in this place. As you get older the amount of space isn't as important as what space you actually use. * I know a lot of people here, Americans, who started out with a northern home and a Florida home. Many of them realized they could save a lot of money getting rid of their northern home and living here year round. * Not saying Florida year round is for everyone, just saying, once you find a new smaller place you adjust and will probably love it. Simpler life is good! * I have found that where you live is not as important as having the friends and activities that you enjoy. You can live in Venice FL or in Mexico City FL, it is your lifestyle and what you do and who your friends are that will make you content of not. * I had a Chevy Cruze rental car and I was surprised at how solid it drove. Not the same as an MB or BMW, but, if that is all I could afford I'd be quite happy with it.
Stick - One thing to consider though in a long distance move are the costs associated with selling a home, buying a new one and moving van. Plus there are initial car registrations and title fees, new doctor initial visits, new home set up costs, etc. It all adds up pretty quickly, and doing it twice if you aren't happy is worse. It often takes a couple of years for the reduced costs and taxes to offset the initial fixed costs. So need to plan and be realistic. Known more than a few people who have retired elsewhere, missed family and friends, and turned around. May make sense to rent a furnished place for at least a few months before deciding. Good luck (and remember the grass always looks greener initially, but there is no Elysian Field). btw - not recommending against it, just cautioning to do the projected math and make sure you and your spouse are on the same pages.
Thanks all for advice. This group has the combined wisdom of the ages it seems!
Berri, if we moved now it would be to get a smaller/cheaper house, along with something easier to maintain (so less land, no pool). Yeah, there would be some costs but would be offset by lower carrying costs, and ideally a bit more appreciation (looking for smaller house in fancy town). But, in the same general area, so no costs other than for the house (and some moving). But, we would look to seriously purge before going!
when we retire, we are leaving here, because our family is actually elsewhere (mostly back up in NY state). Other than our daughter, and she may not be after her 2 year training program ends (in 2 years). I actually have floated the rental idea to the wife. Work in progress.
Driver, I know that we would be fine in a smaller place. The spouse, well, she is having trouble with the idea, but does admit it should be doable. Just needs to be the right layout. At least if we move back up north around family, we won't need as much room, since nobody will be coming to stay with us!
Florida though, not moving there full time. Wife does not like humidity or heat at all. If I had the money, would get a place in NY and something in maybe S. Carolina for winters.

Florida sure isn't for everyone, especially June to October. My tennis guys said it was brutal this year. Not just playing tennis but being outside. I wouldn't recommend Florida all year round unless you know what you are getting into. I just meant, people buy a smaller 2nd home in Florida, but, they find they can live in the smaller house all year round, and then they sell their northern home.....quite a few of the guys have done that.
Yesterday I was in the left lane of a two lane road. Some guy in a smaller pick up truck is in the right lane and he is going to turn into a plaza. To make his right turn he has to go way to the left almost into my lane - curving left in order to make a right turn. Mrs D thought he was going to hit us, I was watching and was moving left as well ready to curve way over if I had to. I saw a lady do the opposite the day before when she was turning left from a 2 lane road.
Do these people think they are driving a semi trailer truck? Can't they just drive straight and then make their turn.....what does curving out accomplish?

Something doesn't add up. I know our 2014 C250 is fairly basic, no extras, but, when we bought it 2 years ago it had 12000 miles and it cost $25k. The difference between 52k and 12k miles is about 3 years of driving.

* Wouldn't it be well worth it to spend an extra $500 and get the Cruise instead of the Spark?
* Can you really get a Malibu for $16700?
* Can you get an Equinox, Camaro, or a Volt for around $20k or is there hidden charges (they admit to DOC fee)?
* Would you pay $25000 for that Bolt?

Man from Brazil charged with stunting in East Chester
RCMP on the South Shore have charged a driver from Brazil with stunting.
Just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, an officer with Southeast Traffic Services clocked a car going 182 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 103 in East Chester. The vehicle was seized and the driver’s license was suspended for seven days.
Nova Scotia RCMP say speeding is one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions on the province’s highways.
The fine for stunting is $2,422.50

The Malibu is a loaner...didn't notice that.
It lists for $25208
Factory Rebate $2500 - is that from the manufacturer because the car was used as a loaner
GM Lease loyalty $2000 I would think it would be more important to get people to switch into a GM. You have to pay people to come back to the brand?
GM Down payment assist $750 Guess it sweetens the deal to help get some money down.
Mahar to You $3301 Is this all the profit gone to get this car off the lot and to be able to offer it at this low, low price? And, what is with the $01?
Just wondering............

In my bleak years my property taxes equaled more than 35% of my gross income. A very regressive tax system.
In other news I just bought a new IPad and I can log in again without stealing my son’s tablet. 128gb vs. 16 on the old one. Much faster so far. Cost about $400. Think I can get a reduction in my dues?

She messed up my plan a couple months ago by unexpectedly getting a new job that requires she is in the office most days of the week. So the idea of moving to Delaware or some other cheap to live place is out. So, stay in a more expensive place and work a little longer (another year?) to make up for it. And as soon as we can retire, this place has to go!
I agreed (though we will keep poking around, just in case) but told her if the house is out, I am ramping up looking at cars instead of going to open houses!

* Our home in the north is 2400 sq ft, the Florida home is 1400.
