The dealer in question is a 'one price' type of place that doesn't normally discount their cars.

What I don't know is if the cars are sold 'as is'.

Colorado gets its fair share of thunderstorms, hailstorms and tornadoes.

    $50K for a medical procedure!

When I had a total knee replacement in 2008, the total cost was well north of $50k. Luckily for me, I have good medical insurance.

On the subject of hail damage:

They sell the cars at a steeply discounted price and give the customer an estimate to fix the car. Good for the dealership because the less cars they have to make an insurance claim on, the better.

I ran into this a couple of years ago. We had a big hail storm, hit a row of new car dealers out on the Freeway. The dealership I was shopping at (Ford) had a crew of "paintless dent removers" fixing the small dings, and they were offering the damaged cars two ways, with and without repairs.

The price "with repairs included" was still above the "Truecar.com" bottom line price, so you were not saving any money by buying a car that had been damaged and then repaired. And the price "without repairs" was not very attractive, at least not to me.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a bargain, this isn't likely to be it.

That makes me wonder if dealerships just fix up these cars and then sell them as new. Do they have to tell you the cars survived a hailstorm or can they keep that a secret? Do we have to watch for cars caught in floods, and now cars left out in a hailstorm?

I can't imagine buying one with the idea I would get it repaired myself. I doubt if you could win on that deal. Since the paint could peel off in areas damaged I don't think it should be saleable as brand new - and potential buyers should know the car has been repaired. I even wonder about replacing the glass...is a windshield replacement going to be every bit as good as one installed at the factory where there are tight controls and the glass is installed at the optimum time?

Yep, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had the procedure this morning. The doctor said I had a few polyps which he removed and sent to the lab for biopsies. He also said I have a few hemorrhoids which were not a problem. He also found diviticulitis. I go to see him in 2 weeks for results.

I hope the biopsies are negative.

The procedure was fine - it was all that mess for the prep that was bothersome, to say the least.

for a big enough discount, I would take a hail car. especially if my daughter was going to drive it too at school (send a car to HS or college, and it looks like hail hit it anyway). I would plan to keep it a long time.

my SIL had her BMW (2011 535) damaged in a recent hail storm in NY. I think the bill (insurance paid) was about 6K. lots of paintless dent removal, and a new hood. Did a good job. I couldn't tell.

they bring in roving crews from all over the country. A month or 2 later, they still had a big backlog of cars to fix.

Exactly....they start at about $22K, but it seems to be a lot of car for about $32k. Interior is pretty attractive too.....

I just happened to be at the Chrysler dealer today and they had a couple of 200 S types at the front door.

Not bad looking. Base price was $24k. I saw one FWD model that was $30k with a V6 (a$2000 option). I saw an AWD version for about $34k. Too rich for my blood.

Maybe at $18k but not $30.

I was at the dealer because Chrysler requires a 5 year inspection to maintain the lifetime power train warranty on wife's PT. That was free. The safety inspection had expired a week ago so I figured...while I was there. Also had them rotate the tires for $20. Promised to do the work in 11/2 hours...took two. They did wash it though...even though I told them not to.

As expected they came back with a "to do" list. They said two of the tire pressure monitors were worn and they would do it for $272. I seem to remember those going for $50 including labor so I declined and then went home to take a shower. Reminded me why I use Indy shops when possible.

Also saw some Challengers and remembered that Hellcat. $34k for the V6 model. Again, too much for too little. The car looked huge! 20" tires on a secretary's car? Huh? I'll pass on that boat.

Saw some 2013 left overs and some "demonstrators" on the floor. One was a 2013 200 with about 13k miles on it. Wonder what discount I could get on that? I'm thinking 40-50% off MSRP.

That's probably reasonable for 2 weeks. We have a friend who collapsed on the golf course while in Florida. One night in hospital with all the tests was $12000. They couldn't find anything, and believe it was just a temporary thing that can happen.

I know we pay for it (through fees and taxes), but both of those would be covered 100% up here.

I don't think you can get a Dart for $18K. The average price of a new car is $32k!

The average new vehicle now goes for $32,086, according to Interest.com – which works out to a typical monthly payment of $633. While the number quoted by other tracking services vary slightly, there’s general agreement that prices are rising a good bit faster than the rate of inflation. TrueCar.com puts the so-called ATP at $32,074 last month, an increase of $1,110, or 3.6%, from February 2013.

Be interesting to see what you could buy, that you could live with, for $18K. I doubt it would be new. Maybe that 2013 Chyco 200!

Edmunds lists the TMV for a new stripper 2013 Dart as $16,400. I don't believe that includes incentives which on a leftover could be a couple thousand more. So $18k might buy something I could live with.

Pure speculation of course because I'm saving my pennies for something better than a stripper.

$16500 is a little deceiving considering most people will want to add automatic, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, as a minimum, and that will bring you to over $20K. Incentives might bring it down to $18K, but not sure they could discount 10% on a low profit car.

When we bought the Passat, it was advertised as starting at $19995. But, no one would or could buy that car in Florida. For one thing, you can't sell a new car in Florida without air conditioning. The S model had cloth material seats that would not wear very well, and didn't look very nice. Drivers seat is hard to adjust to proper position and passenger seat won't move into position. We pretty well had to move up to an SE model which starts at $$22,000. The $19995 advertised price is just to get you in the door.

Driver, how do you account for the drop in VW sales here in the US? At first I thought it was due to the fact that many of their cars are built in Brazil and Mexico, a possible negative for US buyers. But they do have a US factory.

I know the new C Class Mercedes coming out in September is being built in their US plant and not imported from Germany like the E, S, CLS and the rest of the auto line. Their SUV's are all built here in the US now.

So if it's not place of manufacture that's causing a reduction in US sales, what is the cause?

I think VW's "spotty reliability" perception haunts them. They do have some very appealing products. Most of the cars don't cater to the hardcore driving enthusiast. A few years ago they did some very obvious cost cutting on a lot of models. Specifically the Jetta which had plastics as hard as a brick wall, a non independent rear suspension (if you are going to do that, then it better be paired with a 5.0 L V8 & RWD - good job Ford) and a somewhat lackluster naturally aspirated 5 cyl engine. The sporty GLI had the chops with its 2.0 L Turbo 4, soft touch interior, & fully independent rear suspension.

That's all changed. VW saw the error of their ways and gave all Jettas IRS, soft touch plastic, & a turbo motor. There's a diesel option as well as the GLI, & hybrid model.

I really think if more people would test drive the cars instead of just droning back to their Honda or Toyota dealer every 24 - 36 months they might sell better. Sticker prices might be higher, but they discount steeply and always have some sort of cheapo financing & rebates available.

They really do have something for everyone. Want a hatchback? Golf with a 1.8t or TDI. Sportier? You won't be disappointed with a GTI.

The sedans have big trunks & back seats made for real people. How about a luxury 5 passenger SUV that gets 28 mpg in the real world (@gagrice)? The Toureg TDI. And oh yeah, it's built on the same platform as a Porsche Cayenne which costs thousands more.

I recently drove a fully loaded Passat TDI SEL. The $35 K sticker put me off, but a TDI with sunroof lists for just under 30K. The car is comfortable, smooth, & torquey. It is handsome and soaks up road imperfections very nicely without excess body roll and a too soft "Lexus like" suspension. People on fuelly.com are creaming EPA estimates. I'm strongly considering it as my next "Buying Experience" or CCBA "Card Punch."

One other thing I saw while at the Chrysler dealer:

While I was waiting I took a stroll among the used cars. If nothing else I get a laugh at the asking prices.

I found a 2006 4cyl. Mitsu Eclipse GS with 77,000 miles Car original MSRP was about $20k plus about $1500 option package. They wanted about $10k.

The thing that stuck me was that this car had the paint on the entire roof faded. The wheel were covered in curb rash. The car looked a mess.

Why would a dealer put a car up for sale in that condition? My first instinct would be to offer half the asking price. Wouldn't it be smarter to clean the thing up first?

The only reason I can think of is that the dealer put so much money in the trade that to fix it up would not be financially sound. So he put it on the lot hoping to get what he put into the trade.

I am also guessing that he put more into the trade than he could get wholesale for it at the auction. So he put a high price on it and the first offer he gets that is near what he put into it, he will accept.

So if you offered 1/3 less than the price listed, you probably would get it.

Aren't those popular cars with a certain group who like to customize these? Maybe the dealer felt that it would be cost effective to save the cost of guessing at what wheels to use and to repaint and hope for a buyer who wants to customize the vehicle overlooking the bad condition of certain parts because they will replace/repaint anyhow. It's sort of like preparing a house for sale: if you pick a certain replacement carpet and pick colors for paint in various rooms, the potential buyers always dislike the color choice and talk about having to replace the new carpet with a different color or better quality, etc..

IMHO, VW sales have dropped because a new Fusion and new Accord have been introduced since the Passat came out. Further, the Passat has rather annonymous styling. Lastly, management has said they don't understand the American market and are trying to fix that.

IMHO, most buyers don't know or don't care where the car is made. In the next 2-3 years, it is expected the Mexican made 3 series, CLA's and Q5's will be rolling into the US from Mexican factories. Robots don't care where they work and as long as the proper logo is on the front of the car and they can afford the lease payment, neither will consumers.

You are correct for most consumers. However, In my case, I would not buy a car made in Mexico or Brazil - it's a personal prejudice of mine - more political than quality of manufacture.

Personally, if I want a German car, I expect it to be made in Germany. I would buy an American-made car any time over any car manufactured in Mexico or Brazil or Argentina. Again, a personal preference.

I agree with your take on the VW people not understanding the American market.

Business Insider has a good article which answers that question. It seems the biggest problem is VWs cost more than the competition in each category. They usually cost more because they use more technology in their cars. So, people who are looking for cheap basic transportation will buy a Camry, Accord or Fusion for $2000 less...most people just care about price. They don't care about handling, performance or technology.

Other reasons are poor reliability in the past, and lots of new competition, from companies like Hyundai, Kia and even Ford (Focus) and GM (Cruze).

    Check the article at businessinsider.why-americans-arent-buying-volkswagens-2014

VW isn't hurting, their sales are up substantially in world sales. I would guess 80% of buyers only care about price when they buy a car in this category.

    Happy Mental Health Day!

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end.

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love... I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead.'

Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry..

How soon can I go home?' :)

I had a contentious probate hearing this week; the wife died intestate(without a will) and wife's family HATES hubby. In an attempt to keep him from recovering anything from his wife's estate, her family accused him of murder. Problem is, she had committed suicide- by hanging herself.

"Why would a dealer put a car up for sale in that condition? My first instinct would be to offer half the asking price. Wouldn't it be smarter to clean the thing up first?"

Since I already have a 2008 GT Eclipse with half that milage I wouldn't want it at any price.

But doesn't it make more sense to clean the car up and get closer to full price? I mean this car looked like someone had gone at the roof with sandpaper and the wheels had every spoke scratched. 1/3 off would be like a $3500 discount. You would think their body shop could paint a roof and polish up the wheels for less than that.

This isn't the first time I've seen this happen. At this and other dealers they seem to put filthy vehicles up for sale with scratches and dents that would make me ashamed to put in on my lawn.

Maybe the detailers are on strike.

Of course - or wholesale the car. But putting it out on the lot like that doesn't make any sense to me.

Why not drop into the dealership and find out the "real" reason he would put a car like that out on his lot. Again, my guess is he can't wholesale it for enough money or he is hoping some schnook will buy the car as is. I would never put a car like that on my lot - never ever!

That kind of makes sense but the 2006 version was royally despised by the tuner crowd. It had become too civilized.

Interesting case study. I assume the husband was cleared of murder, otherwise the case would not be heard at the probate level. Yes?

Which brings up a morbid sales story. A contractor friend of mine's utility van perished. While doing some work on my Boston condo he noticed a similar van in the parking lot. Upon inquiry we learned that the van belonged to a unit owner who died two weeks ago. Rather than express his condolences to the window, he instead ask how much was the van.

I know there are vultures out there who take advantage of grieving relatives at estate sales, but this one was egregious and insensitive. I felt so embarrassed to be a witness to this spectacle and I am amazed that some people have no respect for the dead.

Your story sounds just like opening scenario of the movie "Cadillac Man"! Robin Williams played a car salesman who comes upon a funeral where the hearse breaks down near the cemetery. It was a very hot day and the widow is standing outside her limo waiting for the tow truck or back-up hearse to continue the funeral procession. Robin Williams gets out of his Caddy Convertible and makes some small talk with the funeral director. He then walks up to the widow who is in tears and tries to comfort her. A few minutes later, he offers his services to assist in any way he can - giving the widow his business card with his dealership's logo and address. All heck breaks loose as the widow tears him apart for having the audacity to try to sell her a car in the middle of her husband's funeral procession.

Truly a classic film about sleazy car salesmen.

There are sure a lot of Craigslist flakes out there!

Still looking for a cheap hooptie for my 73 year old friend who has had 17 operations for bone cancer. I'll be the one paying and hoping maybe she can pay me 100.00 a week or whatever.

I've learned that the curbstoners constantly stay on CL and when something pops up that is cheap and nice, they will jump on the phone or computer and rush over with 100 dollar bills.

Then they flip them with out registering them.

Then there are the sellers who are scared to death of putting their phone numbers in the ad so e-mail response only! I email, leave my cell number and get no return calls.

Then we have the Salvage Titled cars, the TMU cars the junk cars that "only need the transmission bands adjusted" etc.

    About ready to give up!

Don't give up there are a few legit sellers on Craigslist.

I love the obvious scammers who post late model cars in NY with Palm trees in the background of the picture. They're easier to spot.

Many times I'll see an ad that looks good and I do a search of the contact phone number and find a dozen other cars being sold by the same "owner".

One of my favorite con men is a seller from down in the Hudson Valley who uses every trick in the book to hide his multiple cars and make you think he's just a sweetheart private seller. He uses multiple phone numbers (probably cheap trac phones), he posts as being in multiple locations centering on Newburgh NY, like Fishkill, Walden, New Winsor etc. and even posts as different genders as in "my husband and I are selling our baby" type text.

But his best trick is putting phony license plates on his cars when he takes photos. The plate on this car also was seen in different ads on a Hyundai, a Kia and a Saturn. None of them trace back to any of those cars.

I can only suppose that he's trying to make people think the cars are on the road and ready to test drive.

What some people won't do to make a buck.

It would still be a non starter for me. What can the "professional" testify about?

The same with any other piece of evidence. How it was gathered and analyzed, methodologies used, tolerances and other such things.

There is a reason it is not a criminal offense. They put camera tickets in the same class as parking tickets.

Speeding tickets are not truly criminal offenses. except for very specific instances.
