A little colder tonight than on Monday! Notice that the info screen says my back door is open.... sheesh (it wasn't).
My tires were seriously flat spotting when I first started out. I felt like I was galloping a horse!
Well, with that temp it figured it had to be open. I could never put up with temps like that every year. Back in the early 70's we had a few overnight lows that hit -20F. That was enough for me. Plenty of guys went out to the parking lot at lunch to start their cars. If you didn't know better you would have thought it was closing time. A lot of those that didn't needed jump starts at the official closing time.

The heated seats on the ATS have 3 levels of heat and the highest one is great on very cold mornings, but you need to turn them down after a while. What gets me is the heated steering wheel, my first. It is great but again, after a few minutes you need to turn it off too. Neither one messes around, they get pretty warm.
I usually turn on the heated seats for a couple of minutes, then turn them off. Funny thing is, the leather in my truck is very thick, so it takes a while for them heat up, but then the stay warm for a while after I turn them off.

At the very least, you should have the bone graft done. The loss of a tooth will start a process of the bone in your jaw disintegrating, which just leads to more problems down the road. You're too young for missing teeth!
Really? Why would it disintegrate? They made no mention of that.

Probably because they don't want us to be as smart as they are.

FWIW, I have never been able to get good mileage from any tire brand I've ever used. I think the best mileage I ever got was just a few ticks under 40K from Bridgestones on my '95 Bonneville and that was eons ago. I have Bridgestones on Mrs. j's '12 Legacy and I've had them on my '09 Genny and haven't been able to crack 30K on several replacement sets for either of those cars. @sda said he got 60K from his Goodyears. I'd kill my favorite goldfish for mileage like that.

If I get tires to last over 40K on anything in my garage I'm as happy as a pig in mud. Heck, I was ecstatic to get 32K out of the Michelin PSS tires on the 2 Series.

Since my wife now has the X1 I'm driving the Clubman to work most every day. Before I started my new gig I installed a set of plugs and ran a bottle of Techron through it. It's a 24 mile round trip with seven traffic lights along the route. I rarely encounter any congestion; most of the time I'm driving between 45 and 60. I'm pleasantly surprised by the fuel economy; I average between 38 and 42 mpg. Yesterday I had a short interstate joint and it cruised happily a bit north of 80 mph. It's a nice little commuter, and it has about the hottest heated seats I've ever experienced in a car. It runs 15" wheels and has the base suspension, so the ride is fairly complaint. There are no squeaks or rattles, which for an older Mini is practically unheard of. Hopefully I can get at least 5-6 more years out of it without significant repairs; we shall see.
My wife has the same complaints about the heated seats in the daughters Countryman.

Why not just get an engine heater?
When I started in the greenhouse business I tried saving money by heating with a hand built wood burning stove. I would have to stay up until 11:00 at night, trudge through the snow and fill the thing up to bursting before bed. Then I’d have to get up at 5:00 next morning to fill it again before the fire went out.
One winter of that and I invested in a gas heater.

I got 60k miles from a set of Michelins on a 98 DeVille, and they were still good when the head gaskets gave out.
The 2008 Passat got about 65k miles from a set of Michelins.
When I was driving a lot of miles, I would not consider anything but Michelins. Not so much now. I put new tires on the Town and Country about 6 months ago, and after comparing prices and reading reviews, I went with the Discount Tire house brand, "Arizonian". So far no complaints.
I take meds to deal with my chronic pain. I know without them, I couldn't keep my part time gig or function normally during the day. Guess once I retire, sometime in 2019 or early 2020, we'll need to sit down and figure out what comes next. I just know they really do help me since I'm not surgically fixable, so I've been old. And some days are worse than others!
Sandman, I hope to god you're not taking Oxycontin and then going out to drive for a living! Hopefully something much less strong?
And on wisdom teeth, they usually get extracted because there isn't room for them in your mouth. They don't usually come in (grow in) until you are in your late teens or early 20s. And then when they do, they can wreak havoc with your existing teeth if there isn't enough room for them. Not everyone, not universal, but a fairly common problem.
Used properly many opiods are quite safe. Last year I had to have an esophageal echocardiogram a few weeks before my aortic valve was replaced. They knock you out to do that. There was no slow drift into sleep for me, I went out instantly and woke up instantly after, not groggy at all.
I asked them what they used on me to do that. The nurse said "We used the good stuff - Fentanyl." I am unsure if they used Naloxone to offset it and wake me up after it was done but given how quickly I came around and the lack of grogginess I suspect so.
But they don’t do bone grafts when they pull them.
Q; I was looking up some info on this, and it turns out the issue is more with missing front teeth. Basically, once the teeth are gone and the jaw isn't doing the chewing work in the same way, it starts to deteriorate. The jawbone is preserved through the pressure and stimulus of chewing (e.g., use it or lose it!). It's the same issue astronauts can have in zero-gravity environments after a long time, when they experience bone and muscle loss.
Apologies if I caused any concern.

Yep, that's sweater weather. Do you have to inflate your tires a bit higher to help with the flat spotting in the extreme cold? I think -35 is as cold as I've experienced and I had to keep the engine running most of the day because I was in remote oil fields and couldn't risk the thing not starting.
I could, but I don't. The tires aren't *that* low (my standard inflation level is usually higher than the vehicle placard, anyway). And, if I did, then I would need to be more cognizant of over-pressure situations when the temps warm back up again. Considering the temps can swing 60-80 degrees over day(s), it is just too much micromanagement for my taste!

If the car isn't specifically prepared for really cold temperatures, you either have to do stuff like that or just let it sleep through the cold snap and start it up afterward!
In early 2007, when we bought our '07 Outback (after the crazy driver incident with the ''96), I had to do a similar regimen with it for the first week after purchase. The dealership specifically told me that it had a block heater installed, but it turns out that it did not. While doable, it is not an easy process to install one. We had -30 to -45 temps for the next week, and, even though I had swapped oils and installed pad heaters on it, I still needed to start it every four hours so that it would not freeze up.
When I finally got the parts, I ended up doing the install in the icepack driveway at -30F. I think I'm still a little annoyed about that.

I think I'm more sensitive than most, because I feel the same way. I call them "butt burners." In our Subarus, even the lowest setting is too warm after a time. However, in the Q7, I have mine set on '3' (out of six possible settings), and I haven't touched it in a long time. If I go on a long trip in the summer, I might turn it off, otherwise it is left on '3' year-round. It isn't hot at all, but gives enough to take the bite off the leather.

I take a left at a light onto a road with 2 lanes in each direction. If possible, I just get into the far right lane right away.
Not sure if it is illegal but it isn't proper. I don't think you would pass a drivers test if you did that explorer. The guy opposite you should be able to turn right when you re turning left....most rules are made to keep the flow of traffic flowing......not made so you can swing into whatever lane you want to get into.
When your right turn is coming up in less than 100 yards it becomes a practical matter.
Now one intersection where I had such an issue was painted with some foresight... it's a dual-left turn with the lines painted to guide drivers into the #2 and #3 lanes, because there are TWO right turn opportunities within the first 100 yards, and another that's no more than 300 yards (total!) down the road. Now, the first left is about the same 300 yards as the third right, but that dual-right is painted to direct traffic into lanes 1 and 2.
A few years ago I had an encounter where someone thought their "free right turn on red" into #2 trumped my protected left into #3. When I got out of the car at the vet's office (3rd right turn) she was waiting to make a left, so I had a few expletives for her, but she was unrepentant.
Failure to yield is failure to yield. Or should right on red be able to expect the curb lane to be left clear for them even by cross traffic going straight?

I might be sorry for saying this but you guys already know this so I'm not exactly breaking new ground here.
When I moved to SC in '92, I had to find a new dentist. The guy I had been going to for years in the Burgh area was very good and I trusted him not to do anything that wasn't needed. So I asked around and finally found a highly recommended guy. First time there he said, "I see that you have all of your wisdom teeth. Most people have to have them removed because they don't have room in their mouth for them. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but you seem to have a big mouth so I wouldn't worry about them until you have a problem". Right then and there I knew I found the right guy because my old dentist said the same thing to me many years before he said it.
OK, go have your fun now that I opened my big mouth again.

No, even though Oxycotin works very well for my chronic pain, my pain doc gives me something different, something that's extended relief and another that's for the break through pain. The combo works pretty good if I take them at the right time of day which depends if I'm working or not. Did try that fentanyl patch once and within 9 hours, was just too much for my system to take so we discontinued them. I had never felt such a rush of overwhelming dizziness in my life which started as I was pulling into our housing development. It was a feeling I've never felt before and hope to never feel again! And driving with that patch was just a no go. My current meds have no effect on my driving ability what so ever and if they did, I wouldn't take them!

OK, Ronsteve, I think I got this. I have a situation that is like that. A busy corner, you turn left onto 2 lanes, and a very popular drug store is probably 20 to 30 yards from the corner, and it is on the right side. The best solution I can think of is to turn into the proper 2nd lane or left lane, make sure there is no one signalling at the corner that could turn into that right lane, go a little slower and angle into the right lane so you get to the driveway in time to slow down and turn in. Do this slowly and be aware of the guy behind you...that he isn't going to try and squeeze in. You should be watching 1) any cars about to turn right, and 2) watch the guy behind you to see he figures out what you are doing. Signals are important for this maneuver too, your left signal on during most of the turn, then the right signal just as you straighten out on the new street.
The lady going into the 2nd lane on a right turn during a red light is very wrong. That is why you go into the lane closest to where you are coming from. And, she should never turn right on a red light, if she impedes oncoming straight through traffic. The road has to be clear to make that right turn.
I joined AAA a few weeks ago. They sent me a survey so they could find out what I may be interested in receiving emails about. I started to check the survey, then when they ask if I am in the market for a new car in 3 months, 6 mos or a year, and they ask if I plan any trips, buy any major appliances etc I figure this is a scam to put me on some lists. Forget it.
Then I read in AARP some ways the scamsters work is they sell your email address from surveys, and from contests.....not that I would enter a contest.
I'd be very careful about taking any survey...I would have to see a direct benefit to me first.

True. If the right turn is extremely close to the intersection, such as with frontage roads, the proper method then is to use your right turn signal after you begin your left turn in order to indicate the intention to that that right. Then, move directly into the right lane and make your turn. The key, really, is just making sure you make your intentions known and be wary of those who might not be heeding such warnings.

When I am waiting for a right on red, I make sure there is as little potential conflict as possible with oncoming left-turn traffic before I proceed. I've gotten honked for it, but so f-ing what... people have honked me and even gone around on the left at "No Turn On Red" intersections.
As for the talk about the guy behind, I think coming off a light is a terrible place to overtake. Though the slight disregard to the "take the nearest lane" is often the best defense. And if there is a crash with a right-on-red driver, the red light is a "must" whereas taking the nearest lane is a "should" in every state I've been licensed in, so that's where the primary fault should rest.
I think the next advance in signal lights should be a flashing red arrow for right turns. Even though it's implicit in the law that allows right on red in the first place, it seems like it needs reinforcement, and could even be used at certain times of day or parts of the light cycle to go solid red (i.e."partial" no turn on red)

Because we may get sub zero weather every 3 or 4 years and then it's usually short lived and above -10. That winter the overnight lows were more than 50 degrees below normal. You don't really need engine heaters here.

We were overrun with the white death major snow here as the first full snow of the season came.
Drivers on I70 were running off the road not understanding that 2 inches of slush pulls on the wheels trying to push through it and causes a car to swerve. A Soul in the brush backwards and another car like a Corolla with body damage. A minivan female driver backwards near the median concrete barrier looking stunned--I don't think she actually hit the barrier for body damage, just spun the car hitting slush on one side of the track.
A jacked up 4-wheel drive Chevy truck with knobby tires seemed to want to be obnoxious. He changed lanes to spray slush into me next to him after I had used the inner lane of the dual ramp while he chose the outer lane behind a semi truck. I knew the semi would slow down because trucks go off there with load shifting and this had a light slush covering from the beet juice brine treatment the day before. I was hoping he'd lose control with his showoff of his high traction [nonpermissible content deleted] truck that he feels can go through anything.
My Michelins are still deep tread so I had little trouble. Just have to be careful of the light rear end on the Cobalt.
Sounds like propofol. They told me they used that 2 colonoscopies ago along with fentanyl. No memory after a few minutes. When I first woke up I could recall the pictures on the TV screen and the talk in the procedure room. After a while I had to work to keep the memory of what I'd seen in my mind.
That was the doctor who started the Mexican music and the anesthesiology and assistant nurse were joking with him about how the doctor does a dance while they do the procedure. A little humor to a really thankless prep and procedure.
Wes, I think your mistake was not building a heated garage before you started on the 20 year house project. I don't think I could survive a winter up there, but there is no way I would try it without a garage to park in.
On Wednesday the 6” of snow that was forecast actually turned out to be 2” of snow followed by several hours of heavy rain. With many storm drains blocked a number of streets flooded. But that didn’t stop SUV owners from trying to ford the lakes with the expected results, such as the lady driving this one who was marooned for a while.

Funny thing is, the leather in my truck is very thick, so it takes a while for them heat up, but then the stay warm for a while after I turn them off.

When we get in a cold car we turn our warmers on full blast. I turn down mine in about 3 minutes, but my wife could leave hers on forever......I have to turn it down when she isn't looking, I don't want her to instantaneously go up in flames.

I asked them what they used on me to do that. The nurse said "We used the good stuff - Fentanyl." I am unsure if they used Naloxone to offset it and wake me up after it was done but given how quickly I came around and the lack of grogginess I suspect so.

Apologies if I caused any concern.

I'd be very careful about taking any survey...I would have to see a direct benefit to me first.

“When I am waiting for a right on red, I make sure there is as little potential conflict as possible with oncoming left-turn traffic before I proceed. I've gotten honked for it, but so f-ing what... people have honked me and even gone around on the left at "No Turn On Red" intersections. ”
Anyone who honks at you for not making right on red fast enough to suit them is an idiot, let alone anyone who would drive around you. Honkers have no authority unless they are paying your insurance.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Drivers on I70 were running off the road not understanding that 2 inches of slush pulls on the wheels trying to push through it and causes a car to swerve.
