There's a special charge for assault on an oldster vs anyone else? Weird.

I suspect the driver can use some kind of "fear" defense when he has a crazy arrogant old man on his hood. Should have just stomped on the brakes.

Yeah, then he could catch a murder charge. Much better.

Sorry your ambassador to China got canned for shooting his mouth off. I thought only our officials did that. Also what’s with the dude who got convicted on eight counts of murder in Toronto? Very untypical Canadian behavior. :s
The ambassador used to be a Cabinet Minister and he messed that up so they sent him to China to get him out of there. Then he messed that up. Some say he says dumb things because he gets emotional too easily, others say he enjoys an adult beverage. Probably some combination of those plus other things.

If some nutter is on the hood of your car, I suspect a fear/panic/self defense argument could be made. Kind of like the people who exit their car and look for fights in road rage situations, sometimes people ask for it and get it.

Of course, a lot of that will be based on the legal representation one can afford.

It is the state of Chris Christie after all. Now there's a fun feud that goes even beyond the wackiness of the Ford family.

I had no idea Ontario municipal politics were such a hot topic for New Jerseyites. I guess politicians misbehaving is something they are quite used to.

Rob Ford was good only as a bad example, although he did try to undo some of the worst of the wooly-headed things the previous progressives had put into place. However the relentless media scrutiny he was subject to was also extraordinary compared to others who held that position. But he had so many skeletons in the closet that they understandably made hay.

You may be unaware that his brother Doug is now Premier (Governor) of the whole province of Ontario.

@PF_Flyer ...dang.....assuming everyone is fine. The car? Time for you to step up to a punch, anyway!!!! ;)

@tyguy ....you almost sound relieved that the Audi is gone. Good job in moving it, and moving on with your Tesla (which I’m jealous of, btw).

Thanks gg. I appreciate the well wishes. I am a little relieved to have the Audi sold, but mostly because it was in the way and I was constantly shuffling cars between the driveway and garage. We have a 3-car garage but we use one bay to store the two watercraft, so that left one vehicle outside all the time. That's not fun in winter because of snow and ice, and then the rest of the year we have to worry about hail storms in Colorado. The new owner is super excited and coming from a BMW he wasn't happy with, and I hope he has a terrific ownership experience with it. He wasn't too specific on the issues with the BMW (3 series), just that he'd run into a number of repairs with it.

Honestly, neither my wife or I want to drive anything but the Model 3, so it's a race to see who pulls out of the driveway first with it. Fortunately she works from home (engineer) and that allows us to put most of our miles on the Tesla. If the upcoming Model Y is close to the 3 in efficiency and driving character I think it'll be safe to say one of those will replace the Outback in a few years.

When you see and avoid the first deer, keep in mind that there is very likely another one nearby, maybe even a third. We missed the first one and hit the second one, at dusk when the lighting is poor.

Yea, there were two. But it was well past dusk. Same spot where one got me. Here's the approach she had. Housing development behind the trees on the left, apartments/condos behind the trees on the right. Not wilderness. They worked along the treeline on the left and bolted across there. 45 MPH limit

Relieved that your wife is OK and that the damage was not debilitating to the vehicle so she could drive it home.

As many posters have already indicated, most of us have had at least one experience with hitting a deer. When I was living in the Poconos, I had an experience with hitting deer and another experience hitting a fawn when I was living in the suburbs of Chicago:

One experience was in Pennsylvania on Interstate 80 going east at about 8:00 PM at night. There was about 5" of snow on the ground and the interstate was a bit slushy so I was not traveling at 70 mph - I was doing about 55 mph in the right lane. All of a sudden, a huge deer darted out in front of me traveling right to left. I hit the brakes and steered as best I could to avoid hitting the buck but in trying to avoid hitting him, I hit the doe that was following close behind. There was a fawn as well, but it got away without any injuries. My right front end of my Pontiac Bonneville was smashed and I ended up in the ditch to the right of the interstate turned on my right side. I was not able to get out, but a PA trooper came across from the other side of I-80 and helped me out of my car. I could have easily been killed. My insurance company totaled the car because of the damage to the roof and entire right side as well as the engine and cooling system. The Bonneville only had 1800 miles in it, so the insurance check was for exactly what I paid for the car and I was able to get another one.

Another experience was about 20 miles northeast of Joliet Illinois in the evening at about 9:30 PM. I was returning from a school board meeting when a fawn ran right in front of me as I was making a right turn on a road - I was only doing about 15-20 mph so the fawn just got up and ran off. I looked at my front end, but did not notice any major damage. The next morning, I pulled the car out of the garage and onto my driveway so I could get a better look at the front end. Except for a slight dent in my right front quarter panel, everything was fine. I took it to my dealer and he pulled out the dent with suction and didn't even charge me because the dent was so minor.

There is no doubt that during the winter, especially with snow on the ground, hitting a deer in the northern tier of States with a car is not an uncommon occurrence. :o

I have new neighbors, about 4 houses down. The house was “For Sale or Lease” for many months, and I’m not sure if they are renting or buying. They did put up burglar bars right after they moved in, so I would suspect buying.

They are parking 5 vehicles in the driveway. Not sure if there are any vehicles in the garage, haven’t had a chance to look inside the garage, so no idea. But they are doing a ridiculous amount of car shuffling, I can tell you that.

Right now we would kill for 5 degrees, heck will would even be willing to slam on our brakes with some on the hood for 5 degrees.

Went out at noon to run the car a little and it was 15 below.

Sunday its supposed to hit the 40s.

Drove by a Harley place during lunch, was tempted to stop in and see if they would let me do a test ride.

    Speaking of weather...

Got it in my head to research a vacation this year. Have always wanted to go to Hawaii, but flights are quite expensive. Was looking at somewhere around $3500 for the 4 of us. While poking around, I happened upon flights to Madrid for $2350 for the 4 of us. Well, alright then, we are going to Spain in June. Go figure.

Barcelona is beautiful, lots of great architecture to see. Just put your wallet in a good place, pickpocketing is the national sport.
When I go to Europe I travel with cargo pants that have the zipper or button down pockets in the front on my legs. I know good pick pockets can slice and dice wallets and purses easily, but, it makes it more challenging for them.
One year I put an easy to reach empty old wallet in a back pocket as a decoy. Airport checkers wondered why I had 2 wallets....laughed when I explained....but, they didn't even take the easy to get at decoy.

I love Spain. Not a huge fan of Madrid although the museums (Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thiessen) are well worth the trip there. Toledo is not far from there. Love Barcelona and the cities around it — Valencia, Taragona — and it’s really fun to take the night ferry to Mallorca and spend a few days there. Mallorca has wonderful hiking and sailing opportunities. We have had wallets and purses stolen in both Madrid and Barcelona, but mainly because we had either just arrived and were very jet lagged (Madrid) or, in Barcelona, had just come down from the mountains around Albarracin which has few tourists. In both cases we just didn’t have our city wits about us. And boy can pickpockets spot that lack of awareness. As long as you’re careful it’s a wonderful place to visit.

I'm always vigilant about my stuff when traveling. Hell, I live between NYC and Philly. Its just habit.

our villa is on the south shore, Costa Del Sol, but we'll spend the night in Madrid when we arrive and before we leave since the villa is a 5-hr drive from the airport. I've booked a VW van for $440 for the 9 days. Not too bad.

BTW, I should mention this will be my first trip to any trip "overseas" that isn't in the Caribbean.

Don't laugh; in PA you are entitled to the deer you hit. Here's the story.

We were living in SC in 1993 and got the obligatory Sunday morning phone check in call from Son #1 to his Mother. Mrs. j tells me to get on the line because Son #1 has something he wants me to hear. Turns out he hit a deer while going at least 70 MPH on I79 South heading back to his apartment at about 2AM Sunday morning. No, he was not drinking but said he should have been because it scared the hell out of him. He was driving his '91 Grand Prix that he bought after graduating from Penn State in '91 (or was that the State Pen). Anyway, the car was still drivable but had a lot of damage. I asked him if he reported it to the state police just to be on record as far as insurance was concerned. He said he didn't but after we hung up he called the nearest PA State Trooper Barracks to make the report. He said one of the first things the trooper asked him was "did he want the dear" because he was entitled to it ? He didn't but to make the report a trooper had to go to the scene of the hit to confirm it. Believe it or not he had the mile marker. I never would have thought to get that but he did. The trooper that went to the scene called him back about an hour later and said everything was recorded for insurance purposes and it was a good thing he didn't want the deer because it was gone. Can you imagine that?

I suspect the driver can use some kind of "fear" defense when he has a crazy arrogant old man on his hood. Should have just stomped on the brakes.

Yeah, then he could catch a murder charge. Much better.

In other news...seems like weight makes a difference:

Impala faster.....don't know if that is a deciding factor in which one I would buy. Well, since neither one is of much interest it still doesn't make me want to buy either one.

I’ve driven both and they are both very comfortable. Only complaint would be the high beltline makes for a claustrophobic feeling.
I haven't driven an Impala but I did drive a 2016 Chrysler 300. Felt like I was driving a 1968 Ford Torino, fairly heavy, big, plodding, couch like seating that is low, small low windows.

Be sure to see the Nerja Caves

There is a beautiful theater built in the cave.

One hint, especially good for traveling. Scan all your documents and store them in an email....and of course save it. If you are in any country and your wallet, license, credit cards, passport etc get stolen, you can at least find copies.

Just got off the phone with my daughter who lives in Carpentersville, Illinois which is Northwest of Chicago.  She said it was -22 degrees last night.  She said she had to go to her dealership to have them add 10 psi of air to her tires.  She added that she was awakened several times last night with creaking noises on the roof because of the windchills reaching -50 degrees.  Tonight they are forecasting -25 degrees, just shy of a record set in 1985 when it went to -27 degrees.

I was was living in the western suburbs of Chicago back in 1985 and vividly remember the freezing cold of -27 degrees with windchill factors of -60 degrees.  I feel sorry for all you guys living up north.  Stay warm - it’s supposed to warm up Saturday and Sunday.

The news just announced that it’s warmer on Mars than Chicago.

Like were they listening to a Mars TV station give the local weather? LOL

We're at a balmy 0 deg F. Were -9 before noon as it cooled through the morning and was a -4 when I got home at 2 pm. Wind was vicious this morning. I think the air we were getting had been in Chicago an hour before, it was rushing so fast (40 mph actually). And zero percent humidity the way it felt!!!

Maybe it's time to move to Florida despite hurricanes, sink holes, alligators, giant cockroaches, drivers who run red lights, hit pedestrians at a higher rate, etc.. Am I missing any negatives for the South? I'm trying to think of which is worse...

For us, these cold bursts have been short-lived. We typically get 3-5 days at a time once per winter at least.

Lived in lots of places; they've all got their good and bad. Dayton and Cincy seem to attract tornadoes, but not like Oklahoma. If I lived in the Dayton area, I'd probably spend more than a little time at the Wright Patterson AFB aircraft museum. Neat place! IIRC, Dayton and Columbus have a good number of old car shows too.

Wow, that's just brutal. I sure hope the homeless will have a place to shelter during this deep freeze.

...and that should bring out the potholes! Amazing - I'm hearing from the arctic tundra to the 40's this weekend.

It can get very warm in the South of Spain, so think about what you might need. I do think, though, that I was there a bit later in the summer. One day was 41 C.

They are talking low 50s on Monday. That's a 75 to 80 degree increase in temperature in just over 5 days.

Lived not to far from you then. I was up and outside every 4 hours driving my car enough to get it warmed up so the darn thing would keep running.

Hopefully, I will be happy that when we go to Madison, Wisconsin at the end of next month to celebrate one of the kid's birthdays, I will be glad they were born at the end of February instead of January.
