Just got off the phone with my daughter who lives in Carpentersville, Illinois which is Northwest of Chicago. She said it was -22 degrees last night. She said she had to go to her dealership to have them add 10 psi of air to her tires. She added that she was awakened several times last night with creaking noises on the roof because of the windchills reaching -50 degrees. Tonight they are forecasting -25 degrees, just shy of a record set in 1985 when it went to -27 degrees.
I was was living in the western suburbs of Chicago back in 1985 and vividly remember the freezing cold of -27 degrees with windchill factors of -60 degrees. I feel sorry for all you guys living up north. Stay warm - it’s supposed to warm up Saturday and Sunday.
Maybe it's time to move to Florida despite hurricanes, sink holes, alligators, giant cockroaches, drivers who run red lights, hit pedestrians at a higher rate, etc.. Am I missing any negatives for the South? I'm trying to think of which is worse...
For us, these cold bursts have been short-lived. We typically get 3-5 days at a time once per winter at least.
These winters are going to make the population explode in Florida. They are building new homes everywhere. I drive by a field with trees or cows one day....the next day the ground has been flattened and it is staked out for new homes. As the baby boomers get older, they don't like the cold or the hassles of winter, and they want a simpler lifestyle, not to mention lower taxes. Those news stories are true though...everyday a car goes onto a sidewalk or into a store. Bizarre stories happen every day too.....usually Sheriff Grady Judd explains what happened....he gives great interviews, the TV stations love him.
I'm always vigilant about my stuff when traveling. Hell, I live between NYC and Philly. Its just habit.
our villa is on the south shore, Costa Del Sol, but we'll spend the night in Madrid when we arrive and before we leave since the villa is a 5-hr drive from the airport. I've booked a VW van for $440 for the 9 days. Not too bad.
BTW, I should mention this will be my first trip to any trip "overseas" that isn't in the Caribbean.
It can get very warm in the South of Spain, so think about what you might need. I do think, though, that I was there a bit later in the summer. One day was 41 C.
41C? What’s that? Like 15-16 Kelvin? ;b
Take Celcius 41C, and double it = 82, and then add 32 would make it 112F roughly. Gets distorted at extremes so I am guessing 106, 108F.

Lived in lots of places; they've all got their good and bad. Dayton and Cincy seem to attract tornadoes, but not like Oklahoma. If I lived in the Dayton area, I'd probably spend more than a little time at the Wright Patterson AFB aircraft museum. Neat place! IIRC, Dayton and Columbus have a good number of old car shows too.
I’ve toyed with the idea of moving again several times. But, I’ve lived in Silicon Valley in the past, which can have wet, cold winters, too (just no snow as we get in the OH Valley).
I travel to FL for work quite often. Great this time of year, but brutal in the summer.
In the N KY, SW Ohio area we get snow sometimes. Every once in a while we get the temps we’re seeing now (-Xº). But, those extremes don’t happen all that often. In the summer, sometimes it gets hot and humid.
But mostly, we’re fairly temperate. Spring and early Summer it’s around 80º + or - a few. Summer, we can have a few 90º plus days. Fall, it’s 70º-75º most days. Generally speaking, the extreme weather doesn’t last very long, and doesn’t happen very often.
Super cold to 60's - uh oh, prepare for tornado sirens Seriously, I think Ohio is a decent state to live in, although I haven't lived there for many years.
When I was growing up in the Chicago area, we had the mother of snow storms in 67. Started out warm like that, then record snow and wind (which I believe still stands today). Homes had snow drifts onto their roofs. Of course, an arctic plunge followed.
Were you in Cincy for the blizzard of 78? It was in the 70s during the January day and dropped during afternoon as the blizzard moved in.
When we get unusually warm days Jan/Feb, I think of that day in Cincy that the wet snow came.
I was. I was young enough to be warned by Mother that I should dress properly, which at the time meant long johns over blue jeans and a sweatshirt covered by a “pea coat” with a knit hat and ear muffs over that. Don’t know why I remember some things in such detail, and other things befuddle me, like all of my on line passwords.
That was the only time I recall that our school was closed, but my best friend’s Father drove us to the OH River so we could walk on it. We actually made it to the KY side, where there were police ready to issue tickets for walking over the frozen river (but we just walked away from them).
I was also at the Bengals “Freezer Bowl” in ‘82 for the AFC Championship Game. Windchill made it as low as -59ºF. For that, I wore long johns, two pair of Levis over that. Insulated long sleeve T-Shirt, with two sweatshirts over that and a down insulated coat over all that. I put newspaper in my insulated boots, isulated socks on my feet with plastic bags over all that.
I had a full sock hat over my head, ears and mouth, with my coat’s insulated hood over all that.
Saw a guy with a metal flask sitting in front of me try to take a swig of whiskey from it, and his lips froze to the flask. By the time his companions (who were laughing so hard they could barely breath) extricated him from the flask, the skin tore off his lips and he was bleeding. It was so cold, (or he was so lubricated internally) he didn’t care.
Bengals were playing the San Diego Chargers, obviously a warm weather team. Bengals came out of their tunnel in short sleeves. After seeing that, you could tell the Chargers threw in the towel. Bengals won 27-7.
Went to the SuperBowl at the Silver Dome in Detroit. Weather wasn’t much better there. And, of course, the Bengals had the game won until Montana struck with 35 seconds left in the game, and pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat. Bill Walsh, a former Bengals coach and Paul Brown prodigy, who was angry that Mr Brown wouldn’t give him a shot to become a HC, went to the 49ers and beat his former mentor’s team.
Moved to the Bay Area the next year and found the winters in No CA weren’t a whole lot different than they were in Cincinnati.

It's much easier to get cool than to get warm, that's for sure. Another problem is that many people don't know how dangerous extreme cold can be, if you do the wrong thing.
HomeDepot was showing this one at $497 (now $553), so I drove over Monday evening in my truck to pick one up. Uh, no, they don’t actually stock any appliances. Be happy to order one though. So I drove down the street to Lowes. No, sorry, we don’t stock appliances, be happy to order one.
I went home and looked at the web pages again, more carefully this time. HomeDepot does say “on display at our Gulfgate Mall store”, which is not the same as “in stock”. Lowe’s, on the other hand, actually says “available for pickup at this store”. Which is a downright lie.
Best Buy shows the same model, also at $499. This time I called first, and no, they do not stock appliances. Interesting side note, it seems that every washing machine listed on their web site has a 4.5 stars rating. Which seems a little “off” to me, but whatever.
All of which makes me wonder how the big box stores expect to compete with online only stores such as Amazon. The whole idea with Home Depot, your plumbing breaks, you run over and buy a piece of pipe and maybe a pipe wrench, go home and fix it. Your washing machine breaks, you run over to Home Depot, buy one, bring it home, wash clothes. Simple. Not any more!
And yes, I did check Amazon. They sell the same unit, but at a higher price, so I went with Home Depot, who was $2 cheaper than anyone else. And at least they didn’t lie on their web site, like Lowes. Delivery scheduled for Saturday, fingers crossed.
Here in Texas, I run the AC 12 months of the year. Granted, it's only occasional use in January. Mike and the others down in South Florida will use the AC more often than I do. Many people don't realize that South Florida is quite a bit further south than I am here in Houston. I'm actually closer in latitude to Tampa than Miami.

That looks like the one we got from Lowes about a year and a half ago. So far, so good I guess. I have heard my wife say that its doesn't spin dry enough some times.
You can pick it up at the Lowe’s store. Just have to wait for them to send it over from central warehouse. I would be 99% of retail customers just have it delivered and installed. There’s no way a retail store could stock all those appliances. Sometimes you can just go to the central storage location and pick it up on the spot. Depends on where it is and if they set up for that.
Or go to a sears outlet, where you get one off the floor and in your truck!
Now that did not occur to me. I never think of Sears any more, I used to spend a lot of money there, appliances, tools, clothes, many, many things. But I cannot remember the last time I was actually in a Sears store, has to be 5 or 10 years???
There is a Sears Outlet store 2 miles from my house. And another one, 12 miles away, actually has in stock (if their web site is accurate, always a big if) the exact model I just ordered from Home Depot. "Cosmetic Damage", $60 cheaper. Oh, well, I've already ordered from Home Depot, and probably can't cancel.
Just looked up the answer on their web site. Cannot cancel an order that has already been processed. So be it.
I never buy this. I’m not going out like the stay puff man, and your face still freezes. Feet and hands too. Plus if you go inside, you melt like frosty in the greenhouse.
An update on my search for a new washing machine. After reading many reviews, I settled on this one: And yes, I did check Amazon. Congratulations.....GE still seems to make a pretty good washer and dryer, and they probably have a good service network...much better than Samsung or LG, who seem to only care about selling the things...not honoring the warranty. Almost 10000 gave it 4 stars at HD and 7000 at Lowes, so that should mean it is a pretty good machine. I noticed those 4.5 star ratings on everything at Best Buy too, it could be they weed out anything else, but, you have to wonder.

Was it delivered today? No? Then you can cancel the item and its delivery.
I wouldn't have thought of Sears Outlets. We have one near a Lowes in our area. Lots of the items are allegedy dents models. For most of us, that means no problem.

That’s what I just bought - GE washer/dryer combo. Working great so far these past 3 months.
Just finished my taxes on TurboTax - $587 refund which surprised me - I expected to pay $1500 or so. Standard deduction was $13,700 because I am over 65. That helped a lot!

Can't quite finish mine because I am still missing one 1099. Last year was a VERY complicated one for me. I had to make myself a list of the various jobs and expenses so I wouldn't leave anything out. Looks like I'm managing to get about $5k back. The majority of that is due to one NYC agency I freelance at taking out NY state tax even though their home office is NJ and I live and work in NJ. Go figure.
