Defense for each team played an outstanding game. Rams just couldn't get rolling on offense, but that was mainly because of the Patriot's defense. Goff was forced to try to look through his helmet's ear hole all night.

Goff looked lost and overwhelmed. Phillips and his defense kept Rams in the game as long as he could, but the offense looked out of its element. I think it’s both NE not letting them, but it also looked like the offensive coaches “overprepared” and changed too much, confusing the young QB. Ultimate mindgame advantage - make your opponent second guess your own strengths and abandon what you do best.

Bookend Super Bowl, Pats and Rams; two of the most unexpected outcomes ever. Pats winning the first meeting, and the defensive gem pitched last night! Once again, never a dull SB when the Pats play, while I'd certainly have preferred a 34-31 shootout, the tension of this game was fantastic. Just waiting for that one play, one mistake that would decide it.

Spoke with my grandson on the phone last night. He said he's broke so I'll deposit a couple of hundred bucks into his checking account so he'll have something to fall back on. He told me he developed strep throat and "mononucleosis" 3 weeks ago and was in the hospital for a couple of days. He was given injections of "immune globulin" to help fight the infections as well as IV fluids to keep him hydrated. Poor kid - and because of an enlarged liver and spleen, he is going to miss the first two weeks of the baseball season out in Nebraska. They play indoors for the first two months of the season which is a great way to get all the games in before the tournaments. His doctors and coaches won't clear him to play baseball until February 25th. Once he gets medical clearance and coaching clearance, he'll be a starting pitcher. They also moved him to first base when he's not pitching. I remember way back in the 1950's and 1960's that "mono" was called the "kissing disease" because lots of guys and gals in middle school and high school would come down with it after heated kissing and other contact sports with their girlfriends. I asked him about that and he said that he did not participate in "that" sport weeks prior to his getting sick. He said he awakened one morning with a sore throat. So he went to the infirmary where the nurse and doctor had him taken to the hospital due to his high fever. The blood test a week or two later confirmed the mononucleosis. But at least he did great on his finals from what he told me. Just because young people are off at college doesn't mean they are safe and sound. I hope his recovery is swift and uneventful. :o:'(B)
How is he dealing with the Nebraska winter?
He says he is always cold and that the snow keeps piling up and never seems to melt.  I reminded him that spring and summer will eventually arrive and he’ll be able to see the color of the roads and streets as well as green grass and trees.  He loves college life but I sure would love to hear how he contracted mononucleosis - he and I both know he didn’t get it by “not” socializing.  :oB)

It's contracted through saliva, but you could get it from sharing eating utensils, or maybe if someone sneezes like right in your face. It could take a month or two to appear.

He contracted it 3-4 weeks ago - so he was infected while he was home for Christmas vacation.  My son said he was out late every night carousing with his old high school crowd  so we now know how he got it - and it wasn’t from utensils!

He made varsity as a freshman which was not easy to do.  His pitching speed is in the upper 80’s and low 90’s.  He is cleared to play on February 25th so he will only miss 5-6 games.

You can get mono in many ways. It tends to go through college dorms in waves. So does norovirus, flu, and many other diseases. Lots of young people, unhealthy eating, poor sleep habits, stress, and immune system vulnerability. Fortunately most of them recover quickly. I’ve often said that only kindergarten classrooms rival colleges for sheer germ production and spread.

    !

    .

Mono, or mononucleosis, is spread through direct contact with saliva. This includes sharing eating utensils, drinks, and even things like lip gloss, lipstick, or lip balm. Because it takes about 4 to 7 weeks for symptoms to appear, a person who's infected can spread the virus without even knowing it.

I didn't think it was from utensils, but, I didn't want to say anything. I was once a teen-ager and young guy too! :D

planned for a low customer count because of some football game being on.

Yesterday in contrast was bedlam. All the men must have sent their wives and girlfriends out to buy snacks because everywhere I went I had a woman driver tailgating me. I don’t understand why women like to ride your bumper instead of roaring past you at high speed like a guy would. :)
I noticed women can be worse then men...or almost as bad when it comes to tailgating, but, I think it is for different reasons. Overly aggressive males do it to try and push the car in front to go faster or move aside. Some women do it because they don't have any idea of space and stopping distance....they are in a hurry and don't realize how long it takes to stop if the car in front stops or slows down suddenly.
Might be PI but that is my theory.
I’m not saying one sex is better than the other, just different. Many times those male drivers who race past you will then cut in and almost take your bumper off.

I was watching a rather dumb movie on Netflix the other night. Mechanic talking to his boss in a garage,
“JC’s Trans AM needs a transmission rebuild, a new exhaust, and nitrogen in the tires.”

Struck me right off – one of those 3 things does not fit with the others.

I agree and women don't tend to do that. I had a guy do that very thing today. He was in a Toyota van, I was in the left lane because I had to turn left in about a mile. I know he was impatient, he was on my rear bumper, but the guy ahead of me was going the speed limit which is a bit slow on that road. We past a car on the right, he curved in, then he tailgated the car in front in the right lane and cut in front of me....he actually cut me off and I had to slow down and curve away to miss him.....he barely wedged his way in front of me and the car now in front of him, and then he did the same thing to the car in front of me. It was crazy....but, a woman wouldn't do that. He got away with it this time, but, that maneuver is going to catch up with him some day.

Test drove the Toyota Avalon Touring model today - MSRP was $45,000.  I found it to be a truly outstanding vehicle but just a tad underpowered.  Front seat was fairly roomy and comfortable.  Handling was quite good.  I then thought that for about the same money, I could buy a Lexus ES350.

So I went over to the Lexus dealer and test drove the new ES350.  Ultra Luxury sedan.  MSRP was $50,000.  Definitely my kind of car.  It was Pearl Red with Glaxen leather seats and fully loaded.  Handled and drove better than the Avalon.  Power was similar on acceleration and the interior comfort was similar, but much more luxurious.

For about $5,000 more (Lexus), it seemed to me to be the better choice.  Do in about 18 months, I will be looking at that car.

those are very nice. I sat in one when I was at the Lexus dealer shopping the NX. I would not mind one at all, though I think this iteration might have gotten just a bit too big. I really liked the one 2 generations back (up to about 2012?). Always felt just right.

the Avalon used to be a size up from the ES lexus, but now they are on the same platform, which I think means the ES grew bigger to catch up. In any case, I found it quite large and roomy.

Yeah the ES used to be identical in size to the Camry. The Avalon was always bigger. I’m pretty sure that the new Avalon while bigger than a Camry isn’t quite as large as it used to be in 05+ generation that I had. I had an 03 and an 06 they both were great cars, but 06 was much better and more powerful with the 2GR 3.5.

I am sure the ES350 is a great car and it gets a good write up from most reviewers including Edmunds.
    Review Lexus ES350 Edmunds
One big drawback seems to be the radio....music system. Lots of complaints, this one sums it up:
The stereo system in this car (in my case, the upgraded Mark Levinson), is literally unlistenable due to balance/fader issues, as is the Bluetooth. All of the sound comes directly from the center dash speaker, and no amount of changing the fader and equalizer settings changes that’s unfortunately. There are multiple threads on onl8ne forums of people describing the same problem

You would think, in this day and age, they could have put more into a good music system.

Having said that, if I became unhappy with a Mercedes or BMW (first choices), Lexus would be next on my list to try.

So, our beloved forums come in after “Road Noise, Affordability Calculator and Pre-Production Models”? At the very bottom of the page? Last link?

That doesn’t bode well for us.

Indeed, the Avalon and ES are nice vehicles but unfortunately consumers have fallen in love with the SUV leaving the traditional 4 door sedan as a relic of the past. You would think that that trend would lead to good deals in the premium sedan market segment. But the opposite is true. A lightly optioned sedan in that class carries a MSRP in excess of $45K. I'm not yet in the market for a new vehicle but when I do it probably will be an electrified SUV.

Sedans though tend to have better discounts, and lease specials. So street values can vary quite a bit.

After just doing a lot of looking at sedans and CUVs, and buying a sedan, I’m kinda in the boat of saying, so what that sedans are out of favor? Buyers find wagons more useful, because overall, they are! I probably should have gotten a new CUV instead for the wife. And most likely, when the TLX goes back, that’s what will replace it.
