    @abacomike,
We are going to visit one of the kids next weekend and will be checking out some houses while we are there.

At first you can’t wait until the kids move out on their own - but there comes a time when you want them back - close to you.  Having her close - 20-25 minute drive away would be great!  ;)
I hope it all works out for you Mike even though that will just about kill any chance of you sending me airfare money to come visit you. Then again, you could still send the airfare money and put me up in a nice swanky hotel. Yeah, give that some thought. B)

    jmonroe

I just paid for my daughter’s airfare to come down for her job interview - she couldn’t afford it on her salary.  After all, what are Dads for?

As for jmonroe, not a chance.   :DB)

@abacomike ....great news about your daughter. Just a quick note.....if a company won’t pick up the bill for your daughter’s interview, especially after a 2 hour phone interview, I might think twice about working for a company that is so “chintzy”!

I think Mike said the job is with a government agency. Bureaucracy typically doesn’t spring for stuff like that.

I don’t know exactly why but I find this commercial offensive.

    https://youtu.be/7ZnWp9NDGcQ

I mean, who would move in with a guy not knowing he was into video games?

Are we expected to believe that she owned EVERYTHING in the house? Or is she stealing his stuff?

Maybe the obvious pandering and anti-male inference is what’s unsettling.

Maximum Security was robbed. No? Nice headline yes, but bettors holding that 65-1 long-short winning ticket are not complaining.

Looking at the replays it was a tough call on whether the interference was egregious enough to disqualify the first place horse. Too much reliance on technology, as is now common in the auto industry, can be more of nuisance than a solution. Sorry maximum security your name is not as full proof as advertised.

I'm not sure about offensive....but it is in very bad taste IMHO.
She seems "happy" to be leaving.....they were stupid to have got married if she didn't like his 12 year old mentality of playing video games, and why would that make me think I should get a Tiguan? Maybe it will solve all life's problems, maybe it will help resolve a bad marriage?

There is a rule about advertising....people tend to remember the products if it isn't normal. In the course I took they were advertising a fine Italian wine.....and a pretty blond lady was enjoying it using a straw. Apparently the fact she was Italian and blond, and using a straw to drink fine wine makes something click in the brain - this doesn't make sense, and so it has a better chance of leaving an imprint on your brain.

Remember....any publicity is better than no publicity...they hope you just remember the freedom and the happiness the product brings to your brain.

For reading yours, he should get the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Unless he’s military & probably posthumously (18%) for a REAL act of extreme valor, many military folks, etc., etc. would find that inappropriate to insulting.
btw....just for your own knowledge.....there is no such thing as a Congressional Medal of Honor.

The award is not called the Congressional Medal of Honor. Contrary to popular belief, the official title of the highest U.S. military distinction is simply the Medal of Honor, not the Congressional Medal of Honor. The confusion may have arisen because the president presents the award “in the name of Congress.”

I thought being in the military you would know that.
Would it be insulting to have said "A Nobel Peace Prize"? :)

I need to get a new high speed scroll button.

I do know its strictly speaking called the Medal of Honor. I didn’t want to explain it enough to further demonstrate someone else's ignorance . It was already done once. But here, if you insist on being nit picky, saying there is no such thing. Enjoy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor

Guys IMHO you are reading way far into the VW commercial.

She moved in.... realized dude cared for video games more than her... moved out. It was easy because of the generous cargo capacity of the Tiguan.

    I found it quite amusing

On the Tiguan commercial, I actually saw that, and remembered it. And I see very few commercials thanks to the fast forward on my DVR. So yes, the commercial achieved it's purpose. And to whomever mentioned "bad marriage", the voice over distinctly said "moving in together is a big step". And that is not the same as getting married, no how, no way, not even close.

On the Medal of Honor, I think someone is showing a little too much of a "thin skin". My father served in WW2, my older brother spent 12 years in the army. While they would be impressed with anyone who actually did win that honor, they would not object to a little light humor around the subject.

Para #2 The original poster posts “Congressional Medal of Honor”, and then turns right around in a reply post saying there’s no such thing as a ....”Congressional” Medal of Honor. Check it out. Did I find “Congressional Medal of Honor” inappropriate to insulting? Why?

It all depends what the PEOPLES think of ....congress. It also would depend what they think of the Medal of Honor. With congressional approval ratings of 15% or LESS, what is the majority opinion? If one asked 100 young people in the street New York City, most young folks would probably not know, let alone care.

    Here’s an interesting thing.

I just saw a Carvana commercial where they offered a free car valuation. I thought why not? So I started with my Mustang. Among the questions on mileage, condition etc. they asked if there were any modifications done to the car.

I’ve got a Borla exhaust and a Ford Performance Power Pack 2 installed. Fairly minor mods. When I got the results Carvana valued $1000 less with the modifications. Curious.

Do minor mods really devalue a car that much or do dealers figure if you do any enhancements you are probably racing the heck out of the car?

I would say yes, to all of the above. I plead total ignorance to FPPP2. When one sells any car as one of “stock”, that is really the baseline. So modifications: to engine computer timing power ? and exhaust systems etc., can effect the definition of “stock”, ergo $ value. Carvana probably wants to appeal to many demographics as possible.

To me it depends on the quality and type of mods. My MS3 wasn't dinged for having an MS CAI. However, I passed on a rather nice Boss 302 because the two piece driveshaft had been replaced with a one piece and the OEM exhaust(which featured side exhausts with removable baffles) had also been dumped. Going in I knew it had a CAI, but that didn't bother me as it was a piece that it had received good reviews in the Mustang community.

For late model cars, as in nearly new, any modification is looked on with a disparaging eye.

For a pickup truck, bed covers, side rails, weathertech floor liners, etc, are actually good, but will not add to the trade in value. The dealer wants that so they can remove the easily removed add on parts and use them on their own rides. If you know anyone who has actually worked around a dealership, you know this.

Now Carvana is not a dealership, per se, so I'm not sure how they would react to add-ons for a pickup, but I'm sure they would be negative on performance mods.

I used to know a guy who did car stereo installations. He was very good, many years experience, and he told me (more than once) that most of his work was removing aftermarket head units and replacing them with factory originals. To improve the trade in value. Now this was a few years back, that's probably not true any more. Fewer people are replacing the factory head unit with aftermarket, for a couple of reasons. Number one, the factory units are much better than they used to be. And number two, the factory units are integrated to the point where it is very difficult to replace them.

Yes, in terms of sales/selling the monies would be better spent in getting good to sharp detailing and fixing non working OEM items.

FPPP2 is a cold air intake and bigger throttle body off the GT350 with a minor computer tune. All right from the Ford factory engineers which maintains warranty. No weird stuff like blowers or ninja tunes. Pretty mild actually but still technically a mod.

Not that this really matters, but if one is not using the stock specified Ford/equivalent filter, more dirt (silicon) is being allowed in the engine. The comparison can be verified in the A/B UOA. (used oil analysis, more/less silicon in oil)

Short story: 385 hp/# ft. TO 400 hp/# ft. Same oem air filter.

Longer story. It was accomplished by a greater opening to snow prophylactic plastic intake. Again, oem air filter. One could use merely a demel tool to modify. One could buy the inexpensive cap. Or one could spend upwards of $500 for a “pretty” so called cold air intake product. I went through the issue on the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

You regulars probably aren't, but us mods could certainly be nominated for the work we do in this thread.

I really don’t know if it would have been insulting to have said: Nobel Peace Prize. However, I’m guessing NOT. But here’s hoping you get yours.!

The Mazdaspeed intake used an AEM Dryflow filter- I never noticed any difference in UOA results after the installation. Mazda even stated that the installation would not affect the warranty.

No, but getting out of the US military as an honorably discharged Vietnam era veteran, dropped me from consideration for a LOAD of jobs.

Interesting -- where I used to work you got ten points extra for being a vet. Of course if you were a black female vet with some sort of disability, you got the full boatload of extra points.

I never heard of anyone getting passed over for a job due to having served in the US military. At least not as long as you were honorably discharged. I supposed it might have happened, but it would have probably been pretty d___ rare. And there are many jobs where veterans are given preference.

One of my old bosses told us a story of working at a client site on Xmas.
When questioned in a meeting about why we(vendor) and client's own people needed to work on the holiday, the response was "At first, there's a little crunchy sound with these things, but you get used to it".

For the purposes of hiring, your guess was it was good at that time to be a black female vet with some sort of disability. Guilty/ N-A of none of the above. Federal government gave only 5 points “veterans preference” on examinations.

The seat of Federal government was, is, remains Washington D.C. CA states seat: Sacramento. Any other place for these two are OUTPOSTS.

Just easier to get a better factory unit upfront to be honest. This is my first vehicle since the mid 1990's where I didn't replace the head unit/speakers/amp and am satisfied with the VW Fender unit. I tend to like my music with a little kick to be honest, probably why I have some hearing loss now, but like what I like. Will definitely upgrade on my next vehicle to get a better audio system as it's so worth it to me. And many times, just swapping out the oem speakers will add some goodness to the whole system.

Tom, it’s been a long time since I went to a broadway show in NY. but it’s a fun experience, just with dinner, pricey! Make a weekend of it. We usually see b’way shows at the kimmell center instead. Never heard of that particular show but if wife liked the movie, will likely find that good too.

It’s hard to speak to that hypothetical hypothesis!

I got let go once because I got a “USAF reserve” gig, that only worked M-F, & on demand. Most know reserve units as the “weekend warriors”. Two weeks summer training was normal. I was in the employ of the then famous Dallas, Texas based computer company. The founder, some years later even ran for president. They made it a point to hire Veterans. I’m guessing they really didn’t like the reserve’s DAYS. Even as they staunchly “saluted the flag”. So naturally I tried to negotiate a compromise. Evidently they didn’t even like that. Not long after, a year later, I got a package to resign.
