Farmer, on my Elantra (the 1.6T engine, but GDI) the maintenance requirement was to use a fuel system cleaner (Hyundai specific one), unless you used top-tier gas. Then you did not have to. I wonder if yours is the same? In any case, follow Mike's advice and stick with top tier.

My 2018 S450 turns 2 years old today with 17,150 miles on the odometer. I have an appointment to take it into the local Mercedes dealer's service department a week from Wednesday for its "B-1" service (2 years or 20,000 miles). I will be needing new tires soon which will cost me about $1200. I am going to try and get as much wear out of the current tires as I can so I won't have to replace them again before turning in the lease.

I have had 2 years of trouble-free enjoyment out of this car. I have become spoiled by this magnificent vehicle. It is going to be difficult to downsize next November - but at least I have had the experience of driving the flagship Mercedes for a part of my life and don't regret my decision to lease one for three years. Still drives like the first day I got it. 😛😛😛

$1200? Are these high performance tires? Not getting much tread life out of them. I'm looking to get around 50,000 miles out of my Coopers. :-)

Don't most progressive cars have electrically-assisted steering now? No fluid, other than the electrons, to flush out.

Ah yes since it's the time change make sure you disconnect your cable modem and blow high pressure air through it to get rid of those extra electrons stuck inside the cable.
You joke but the North Korean equipment provided by my cable provider has to be unplugged every so often to dissipate static or else it doesn't work.

Here's something I learned today. My Kia’s 2.0L is a GDI. Never knew that. Thought it had the Theta mpi engine but it’s the Nu gdi.

Now I have to worry about carbon on the intake valves.

You are Walter Matthau? Simple answer. Get it out on the Northway for an Italian tune-up on a regular basis.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4UhOeYYXAA

But I thought the Italian tune up doesn’t work on GDI because the fuel doesn’t wash over the intake no matter how hard you flog it? On the other hand, it never hurts to try.

Of course it would be something exclusive to the manufacturer. :@

I think I might just have my go-to guy spray a can of SeaFoam into the throttle body every 20k miles for peace of mind.

Farmer, I am sure the Hyundai cleaner is some generic brand, You just need to know which one. For warranty sake, I would just have the dealer do it. If I still had the car. Though there is really no way for them to prove you did not use top tier gas.

and no, I am not sure how a fuel system treatment is going to treat what the gas doesn't hit.

what they really need is an access port on the back of the valve cover, so you can screw on a hose to squirt in the cleaner. Kind of like the garden hose attachment on a mower deck for cleaning the underside.

I know that on the 2018+ Mustangs they solve the problem by having both port and direct injection.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go through to keep a valve clean.

Only 2 manufacturers make tires that fit - Pirelli ($1400) and Goodyear ($1200). Run-Flat performance 20" tires. Front tires wear out in 10,000 miles. Original Pirelli's (rear) are still on the car - 17,250 miles. The front tires wear out so fast and the car is in perfect 4 wheel alignment. UGH!

50K miles on a set of tires? I'd whack my favorite goldfish for tire mileage like that. The best I ever got was around 42K from a set of Bridgestones on my '95 Bonneville back in the late 90's. The more I think about that the more I think I made a "documentation error". As you regulars in here know, I have been known to do that. :@ :@

I wonder how many people have a real problem in the first 2 years. I don't think any of my cars had a real problem in that time. Most didn't have any real problems for the 3 or 4 years we had them.
The Audi A4 had the clutch go at the 2 year mark, but now that I have a better handle on my SIL it may not have been the cars fault......I wouldn't put it past him to have taken it out and tried learning on a standard while we were away.
Glad you are happy with your car Mike....nice to be satisfied. Mine is 21/2 years old, 20k miles, and I can't think of a car I would trade it in for.

It bothered me that I had to get tires for the C250 at 30000 miles....can't imagine tires wearing out at 10k miles. You spend a fair chunk of money for new ones....and hardly anyone notices. No one comes up to you and says nice tires.
Just joking a bit, because it is a nice feeling to have more control on wet roads, and better steering...I did notice that.

I got 44k miles on the OEM Goodyear’s on my Eclipse. My current newer cars are no where near tire wearout milage.

I don’t track tire wear on my hoopties since they frequently have mismatched tires that I find laying along the road.

The least I tire mileage I can remember getting is my '04 Focus. Got about 35k out of them, but they were on;y rated for 30k.
My wife is going to have to replace the Pirelli's on her MKC by 45k, seems too soon, but they have no treadwear warranty.

Back in my Datsun 510 days I put Pirellis on, once. I'm sure they had excellent traction, but I drove them to work and back, so had no opportunity to find out. They wore much like Pink Pearl pencil (remember those? [pencils, not erasers]) erasers. Since then I've used a variety of tires, but nothing promising the best traction in warm weather without regard to longevity. I'm currently running Continentals on my car and Michelins on the Forester.

    To each their own.

I thought they were having trouble making hydrogen cars?

Hyundai rolled out its concept for a hydrogen-powered semi that is designed to meet both U.S. and European regulations.
The powertrain needs a few years to get up to speed, but the Neptune could arrive in 2023.
Hyundai already sells two hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicles in the U.S. market, the Tucson and the Nexo.

Dolphins finally win a game! They are 1-7 and have no chance to make the playoffs. They actually played like an NFL team instead of a High School team for the first time this season. Yeah!!!😛😛😛😛😛

I guess I need to point out that if you switch to a different set of tires, no additional miles are accumulated on the set that got removed.

Not the smartest way to ensure getting the first overall draft pick. :'(

Mike, they were playing the Jets, so that maybe should only count for 1/2 a win.

No - it's only "business" - not personal - as the mafia would say. Steve Ross (owner of the Dolphins) is just looking to build a championship team in 2-5 years to make him even wealthier. It appeared the stadium had more Jets fans than Miami fans and still there was a half empty stadium from what I viewed on TV.

The Dolphins have 5 first round picks in the 2020 draft and 8 picks total in the first 3 rounds. They need an offensive line and a strong quarterback. Some defensive linebackers and a couple of cornerbacks would help. Heck, they just need a whole new team and that includes the coaches.

This is true! Besides, it was 88 degrees today and on the field it must have been in the 90's. The Jets aren't used to the hot humid weather.

True, but the car still went 76000 miles on the OEM tires....plus snows.

Every year something breaks down when we come back to Florida, and usually when we go back home. This year it is the Garbage Disposal Unit. Now, we have covered a lot of topics, but, I don't know if we have covered GDUs before.
Do you know how much work it is having to scrape everything off of a dish so you won't clog up the sink? We take GDUs for granted, but, let me tell you they are worth every penny of the $95 it costs to get a new one. Most stores including Home Depot and Lowes have them for $95, but with Amazon we ordered it Saturday by noon, it arrived the same day for that same price. At HD you order it and then pick it up when it arrives at the store.

Now we have to get "The Guy" to come in and install it...he is off for a few days with sciatica.

    .. I'm going through a depression
because car show and cruise season has ended. A couple of last gasps: a Hollow Ween trunk
and treat by a tough old man's group that hosts a local cruise through end of
October into November IIRC and a Saturday truck or treat postponed from last
Saturday because of rain for a group that appears to have a lot of customized (ruined)
old cars that show up. But many cars are already in their cocoons. They won't be showing up.
    Please send condolences. :'(

Hey Imid, Cruise Nights first Thursday of the month down here in Sun City Center. If it rains, postponed until the next week.....and it will be about 80 degrees for this coming show.

    @jmonroe1,
I regularly check tire pressures and have them rotated every 5k.

I got 90K on one set of Michelins on my leSabre. Not sure which car now. Tires rated for 80K Mi.

Tread depth was still substantial and didn't look run out. I bought new ones because the last 10% of treadware is when some high proportion of problems occur.

Driver, that's not even funny. I'm here hurting because I miss being able to go see things like the 1947-8 Frazer I saw last evening at a Trunk or Treat postponed from last week.

Wow, first world problem of the idle rich. :) Never had a garbage disposal. Never thought it a burden to scrape a plate. I do let the butler open my car door though. :p

I watch some of those car restoration shows like Phantom Works and it always seem people are bringing in cars they bought at an antique auction. Usually the cars are lipstick covered pigs that need massive money infusions. There must be as much fraud in that sector as in regular used cars.

I would say a garbage disposal is a necessity these days. That and a microwave oven, oh, don't want to forget a dishwasher, washer and dryer, air conditioner, cell phone, computer, etc.

btw....A garbage disposal probably costs less than using Mr Plumber a few times a month. The $95 model lasted 9 years.....about $10 a year not to have to scrape tiny bits off plates, and a lot of food like rotten tomatoes can be thrown right down the drain. A good one can mulch chicken bones.

Sorry Imid. To brighten your day this car is the special one featured for this months show.

Roamin' Oldies honor well-traveled '51 Ford.
A handsome and well-traveled 1951 Ford business coupe owned by Bill and Bonnie Schnatter of Parrish is the October cruiser of the month for the Roamin' Oldies Car Club. Finished in glistening mint green lacquer, "Minty" is decidedly no trailer queen. She's been driven to shows in New Jersey, Pigeon Forge Tennessee, and Myrtle Beach South Carolina, among other far-flung destinations. Custom touches include frenched lighting front and rear, shaved hood and deck lid, and white rolled and tucked upholstery. Comfortable highway cruising is provided by a bored-out 302 cubic-inch V8 engine coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering, brakes, and a Vintage air conditioning and heating system.

I prefer my Cruise Cars to be unadulterated, but this one is cute.

10k for front tires is a supercar like (lack of) durability. Wow. I thought my 25 thousand was low.

I have a disposal. would not care if it went away. I never put stuff down the drain. Only run it occasionally in case something sneaks down there. I scrape the plates into the garbage, and then either wash or put into the dishwasher.

$1200? Are these high performance tires? Not getting much tread life out of them. I'm looking to get around 50,000 miles out of my Coopers. :-)

Daughter's car. Actually just replaced. Tires lasted thru her senior year of high school, college, grad school and 5 months of the real world. Probably could have gotten another 10k miles on those Cooper tires, but they were dry rotted a bit. About 7 years old. Replaced with Cooper Evolutions I bought off Amazon. Surprisingly those tires were only 3 weeks old. Didn't think you could purchase them so factory farm fresh. I've had Continental tires, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Big O, probably a couple other brands I can't think of.... I'd have to say Cooper's are the best overall in what I like in a tire. PLUS, they get the Jipster star of approval for the tire that gives you the most bang for your buck. B)
