Edmunds. That's why none of us have to pay dues. Thanks @graphicguy
    LOL!

Yeah....mostly fixed income..some bonds. My sister and I own some rental condos in Hilton Head that provides a nice steady income stream, too. Made an investment in a tech start up a former colleague heads up. That’s risky. But, I’m investing in him....more than the company. Plus, I’m on his Board. It will give me something to do once I do “officially” retire. If it goes public, or more likely, bought out, I’m golden. If not? Well....I’ll have a write off for a while.

I’m within a few short years of retiring. I have no long term debt to speak of. My income needs have been curtailed quite a bit over the last several years. I’m not supporting a wife, a child, or any relatives.

My habits are the same as everyone else’s in here....vehicles. And, I like to travel. I don’t gamble (OK...investing in a start up is a gamble). I enjoy golf.

I’m past my target retirement date. But, as long as I like what I do, knowing I can pull up stakes whenever I want is a great stress reliever.

If I live to 115, I might be in trouble. But, I’ll cross that bridge when/if I come to it.

As it is, I really want to sell my house as it’s way too big. I do want something smaller, but not a condo....maybe a land-o-minimum. If I have a shared wall with someone, they’re going to be mighty upset with me when I crank up the home theater system to play Saving Private Ryan.

In brief, my income requirements have gone down and continue to do so.

Someone told me years ago that you keep your age in safe investments. So if you are 40, keep 40% safe.

Makes sense, surely not an exact science but may be close enough.

When I bought my home I was single with no immediate chance of getting married. Everyone told me to buy a condo and I used the exact excuse.

A similar approach (equitiy percentage of 110 minus your age) has worked a treat for me for over 30 years.

Well, I got the bad news today.

My heat pump has a bad compressor. Only 4 years old. I think I got a lemon. Is there a lemon law for heat pumps.

It is under warranty for the part, but I pay the labor and freon replacement.

Don't feel bad. I'm on my third fan motor after 4 years. I had to pay labor on the first one, but the second one was no charge for some reason.

My previous heat pump went 23 years without a compressor. It did have lots of other parts replaced, however.

That Marketplace article said 75% of those surveyed had a major new appliance breakdown within 5 to 10 years. I would think heat pumps are in about the same category of manufactured appliances. Many people said getting something fixed, or the warranty honored was more trouble than it was worth....many decided to buy another one - usually a different brand. A big problem was many makers don't have parts on hand, that creates a big problem.

    This is the kind of story that happens all the time in this area;
St. Pete man took cars on test drives, never brought them back to dealerships, deputies say
Pinellas sheriff’s deputies said he did this at least twice and they caught him in the act a third time. Another car may be missing.
Pinellas sheriff’s deputies say that on Feb. 15, Rouhani went to Fuccillo Nissan, 15232 U.S. 19 N, and picked out a 2019 Nissan Armada Platinum, which is valued at $56,000

Rouhani “made arrangements to take the vehicle on a test drive and return the next day,” arrest reports state, and to leave his current vehicle behind as trade. But another person came and drove that vehicle off the lot and Rouhani never came back with the vehicle he took for a test drive, deputies say.

On Feb. 24, Rouhani went to Crown Volvo and Landrover, 6001 34th St. S., and also arranged to take a vehicle home for the evening for a test drive -- in this case a 2019 Volvo S90 valued at $42,700..

Rouhani was found a short time later at a nearby BMW dealership trying to get another car. Deputies noted that he had driven the Volvo to that dealership and his personal license plate was on the vehicle.

“The defendant admitted post Miranda to going to multiple car dealerships and taking vehicles on test drives and not returning them for his own financial gain,”.

    Then this gets me:
Court records show that Rouhani was cited on Feb. 26 for driving with a suspended license. He has been charged with that offense three times in his past.

In addition, he has a driving record that includes 11 citations for speeding, five for careless driving, 11 for running red lights or stop signs, two for making an improper turn, four for not wearing a seat belt and once for driving a vehicle in an unsafe condition, driving without insurance and following too closely, court records show.

He also has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery, domestic battery, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of crack cocaine, disorderly conduct, petty theft, loitering, grand theft and possession of marijuana, court records show.

There should be a way to make it impossible for this guy to ever get into a car again. Why do law abiding citizens have to put up with this guy?

Dow Jones, peaked on October 9, 2007 with a closing price of 14,164.53. .

The DJIA hit a market low of 6,469.95 on March 6, 2009, having lost over 54% of its value since the October 9, 2007 high

Imagine if you bought in near the bottom in 2009, today your 6470 would have almost tripled, in 10 years.

That is true, but just remember how it felt during that Fall and Winter of 2008/2009. Bank's insolvencies were real threats, the proverbial ATM not working became a possibility. There was not enough money in FDIC to cover all banks, it was only Fed's total backstop promise plus the later hated bailout that stopped the dominoes from falling - and they were falling, regardless of what "moral hazard" people claim today. We're nowhere near that kind of risk, no matter how hysterical financial media get. But we can see earnings recession, then real economic recession. Then it will rebound, as it always does. People will live, orders will get filled, items shipped. But the numbers will likely get worse first, which will result in a lot of emotional reactions, as most of the estimates are still thinking double digit growth this year in terms of earnings.
I often hear the "Dominos falling" from the fear-mongering pro-bailout crowd. I don't want to reargue or relitigate the bailouts for failures at failed corporations, but I would like to hear what these dominoes were.

What is the order of these catastrophic dominoes that the FDIC and Gov't couldn't afford (since FDIC is part of the Gov't)? Would healthy banks with prudent management that didn't engage in stupidity really be taken down? At what point?

Usually, the preposterous presumption and assumption by this fear-mongering crowd is that if you don't bailout the 1% at the huge corporations like AIG, it means we would have done "nothing" as an alternative. An all or nothing strawman argument. As if we couldn't bail out "secondary and tertiarally (made up word)?" affected companies for pennies on the bail out dollar.

A great success story. Oregon is one of those States that seems to have forgotten the US is still a Country with a Constitution and a Bill of Rights.

And this all started with the "people in charge" not accepting criticism from the public, no matter how accurate and correct the criticism originally was.

    RE: Coronavirus

Apparently it is hitting Washington State worse than other States. California is such a big State, I feel a million miles and several "States" away in San Diego.

Normal banks are leveraged 10:1. 10 percent loss means total wipeout. Investment banks were leveraged 35:1, many more as they used accounting trucks to lower it at the time of reporting. Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, originators and backers of huge majority of mortgages, were leveraged 100:1.

If you didn’t see falling dominoes, it means you weren’t watching or listening. Bear Stearns, Washington Mutual, Wachovia, Merrill Lynch were all taken by others, only because Fed assisted with bad assets, there was nobody to take the next one, maybe JP Morgan, rest banks in OK shape was already tapped out. Bank of America took over Countrywide before all mess started, without help and it put them in some immediate crisis. Lehman Brothers, Indy Mac went under, Citi looked to be next, then Morgan Stanley, then Goldman, CiT. Several large industrial companies had their banking units taking the companies down: GE, GM, Caterpillar, Textron, just to name a few. The interbank trading and lending activity completely seized. FDIC was shutting down banks every week. Georgia had its local banks essentially wiped out (shut down or taken over with Fed’s assistance) after all was said and done. Just read a little on banking and financial world.

The uncertainty put into the market yesterday by the Fed's quick rate reduction and some other news likely hasn't allowed enough of a bottom to be generated. Even though the drop was 15% roughly, I would like to see the usual "W" bottom where the market drops again and does not go through the earlier lows and settle lower.

Someone posted that when the cable market channels start having the doom and gloom experts telling how awful it's going to be means the real buyers are buying while talking down the market. Same for the doom and gloom in the Corona virus. They've hype talked it locally and on the alphabets for weeks. Now they're polling and having interviews with folks to see how effective the really bad ideas have been at penetrating. They need to be talking prevention and safety measures, but instead the alphabets and locals start off with how many at risk folks have already died. They never mention the current flu season has been harsher than usual.

I'm more worried about getting Flu A and B. I'm even using hand sanitizer (I had a quart size in the garage from the H1N1 era where we needed to be careful).

"CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 32 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations and 18,000 deaths from flu."

Well, I got the phone call with the estimate for the 4-year old heat pump compressor, labor, and replacement freon, since the other freon was "burnt."

    $0.

It turns out the 10-year warranty on the parts including compressor covers that and fuses, and there is a 5-year labor warranty in the unit I purchased which was above the basic. The company owner had said most of his purchasers at that time were buying the basic unit or the ones with multiple speeds.

Owner said he'd get Lennox supplier to handle the freon replacement because the unit went out before 5 years.

Best news I've had in 48 hours.

Earlier I had gone to my Chevy store to check on a part that's hard to get for my engine on the Malibu. One of the fancy oil control device for the variable intake and exhaust valve timing had failed. Dealer parts happened to have gotten in 2 of them. One was for my car's engine. Car ran fine without it, but had reduced fuel mileage. Replaced Tuesday. I think the part was obtained, but service writer didn't get around to notifying the two people getting the special parts.

Congrats. Wish I was there. But at least I got rid of the HELOC, so consider us done paying for 2 kids worth of college. Need to start directing that money to the main mortgage is guess, if I want to retire before I’m 80!

In NJ I’ve never been asked for insurance. Must be rolling on the dealers. Usually have to show your license, but that could also be to get your real info!

Yesterday I test drove a Volvo. They asked my name but not ID at all. Though the sales guy did ride along on the test drive.

How did he operate the vehicle he took for a test drive? Did he take plates off the car he left at the dealer or did the dealer provide a plate. Did he have to show proof of insurance? In NY I doubt he would have gotten off the lot.
Good questions. I believe he took the new Nissan, his buddy came and got his car that was left at the dealers, and I think they took the plates off of his car. I don't understand why they check his insurance, though that can be faked fairly easily. Most places photocopy your license too, which should have been suspended.

This guy should be on C&C here and give us reviews of the cars he is driving :D

Fun read. Like a comment says, this is nothing new, go back a generation or two and it was the same, vehicles made to fit their respective markets. Narrow roads and high running costs make the bloated SUV here into a bloatling CUV elsewhere. Faux-butch styling and ride height seem to appeal everywhere, although Europe still embraces the wagon.

Another issue in EU vs USA is long distance travel. A 500 mile drive isn't a huge event for many on this side of the pond and will often see wide open roads, where it is a rare event generally in more crowded conditions there. A big car is generally nicer on a long road trip than a 900cc city buzzer.

Probably not, avoiding conflict in an armed society. They aren't police.

Reminds me of an incident with an old co-worker. They were new to the country, had a leaner's permit (I think), wanted to test drive cars. Went to a dealer who didn't check license or insurance. The new driver wrecked the car, and it was a huge drama show after that, complete negligence by the dealer IMO.

What is the order of these catastrophic dominoes that the FDIC and Gov't couldn't afford (since FDIC is part of the Gov't)? Would healthy banks with prudent management that didn't engage in stupidity really be taken down? At what point?

I read this, and it contradicts your set of so-called "facts" that seems to be propaganda from the very worst performing banks, the ones that had all the problems. The responsibly managed banks weren't having big issues.

    https://voxeu.org/article/what-happened-us-interbank-lending-financial-crisis

So I conclude that "trading and lending activity completely seizing" is a deceptive misleading presumption and assumption. It seems more like banks in the worst shape didn't like that responsible people/banks were appropriately pricing the higher risk of loans to them, so they didn't want to pay the higher interest rates they rightfully deserved to get. So they went SOCIALIST when the kitchen got just a little bit warm.

The only "socialist" aspect of the American FIRE sector is how it privatizes profits and socializes losses - reverse socialism, in a way.

I've told the story before about the young lady at work who parked her 3 Series taking up 2 spots in the company parking lot. Two guys that worked in the shop area parked their pick ups so close to both sides of her car that she damn near lost the top coat of her wax job. She was literally in tears in the lobby asking the guard to make another plea over the pa system to move the trucks so she could get out. Eventually the guys moved their trucks but not before it took 2 levels of management and about 45 minutes before they complied. No, she never parked like that again.

You can only protect your car so much. Something will eventually happen.

Heck I put a tiny ding in the Volvo taking out the booster seat. It’s barely noticeable but it’s there and I have no one to blame but myself.

We needed an interior coil on our 8 year old heat pump. $185.

Yes, my HVAC contractor is unhappy with the manufacturer(Rheem); they have required a lot more repairs/warranty work compared to earlier units.
