Remember my case where the victim's "pristine" 2002 Grand Marquis was stripped/vandalized? And the owner and his mom wanted $5000 restitution?
Well, the victim's story omitted a few critical details. In this case, one of the defense attorneys showed me the following picture:

    So I confronted Mom:
Q: "Is this your son's car?"
    A: "Yes."
Q: "And did this happen before the car was vandalized?"
A: "Yes, but it was COMPLETELY FIXABLE!!!"

I'm pleading both defendants to misdemeanors and in exchange they are paying $1,000 each as restitution- and mom and son are still unhappy.

I have 2 CD's maturing this month - 1 on Monday and 1 on March 17th. Both were earning 2.6%. So I called my bank and several others and the best rate I could get was 1.6% for 8 months.

I have a tiered checking account that pays ,25% + 1.5% (bonus for 9+ electronic direct deposits and direct payments per month). So I decided to put the hefty balances into the checking account where I will get a tinge more interest with complete liquidity. When interest rates on CD's creep up again (whenever that happens) I can quickly invest in them again.

Another variable is my need to acquire a new car in the next 8 months and might need access to some cash for a down payment.

I just don't see tying up all that money in a low interest CD(s) for 8-12 months.

    Any other ideas?

Facts are facts. You may not like those facts, that doesn’t change them.

BTW...just today, the amount of people inflicted have exceeded 100,000.

Claim whatever you want with regards to your politics, but lets not minimize the rapid increase of Coronavirus cases. It’s accelerating, too.

WHO has given no one any reason to debate their facts.

I assume you are directing that my way.

As I said my comment was not on this current topic. But do not delude yourself that everything coming out via WHO on whatever subject is as pure as the driven snow. I did some work last year related to the vaping crisis last fall. The pronouncements coming from WHO and some other public health people, all of whom should have known better, was so misleading and plain wrong that it was shocking. And they had to know that. It was all about advancing an agenda, not facts. No wonder people are so damn cynical.

No penalty CDs permit early withdrawal with amount determining the APY:
1.65% Minimum opening deposit less than $5,000

1.85% Minimum opening deposit of at least $5,000

1.90% Minimum opening deposit of at least $25,000

    https://www.ally.com/bank/cd-rates.html?PRTarget=am

    OR

Open savings account is 1.60% now. May go down some more.

The CDs best rates for penalty on withdrawal CDs went from 12 mon to 18 month time period:
1.90% Minimum opening deposit less than $5,000

2.00% Minimum opening deposit of at least $5,000

2.00% Minimum opening deposit of at least $25,000

Yesterday the best rate was at 12 mon and I was able to print a couple new ones for my wife and myself to replace a couple that are maturing soon.

Not sure what the idea that they will guarantee better rates at 18 mon than at 12 months means in terms of future guesses on the short term rates they can earn. Better minds likely can explain it here?

ally.com the bank is easy to set up an account on with computer. Then set up a link to account to transfer funds into the ally.com account. OR send a check within certain number of days. On opening account you get the best rate within the `10 days if I recall the verbage.

The 800 people are very helpful there. Interest rates likely will vary before your CDs mature later in the month.

no clue if anything related to Corona, or maybe because it was miserable and rainy out, but Iron Hill (where we went for dinner) seemed a lot less crowded than normal. But we sit at the bar/lounge side, and sometimes that is crowded with after work groups. Now that could be impacted by fear.

Really saddened today to learn our grandpuppy has a cracked molar. Will be removed next week in a dental checkup. Her mother took her to work today to examine her for bad breath and found the molar.

I hope she didn't crack it working on the peanut butter filled bone here at our house last week. She gets the bones as rewards. Not in the future, I suspect.

Imid, dogs have 42 teeth, losing a few of them is not a big deal. When they get older they can rot easily, especially in smaller dogs, it is normal to remove dozens or even all of them....they seem to do fine without them.

The article about the Ford transmission cover up was quite interesting Ab. The link that describes the actual covering up is this one....it is long but if you read a bit you get the idea:
    https://www.freep.com/in-depth/money/cars/ford/2019/12/05/ford-focus-fiesta-dps-6-transmission-problems/4243091002/
Ford was struggling and needed a car that could get good gas mileage........engineers knew the transmission was a hazard, but, management had too much invested in the focus and Fiesta.

    $1,099 - $1,551
    2002 Mercury Grand Marquis
    GS 4dr Sedan (4.6L 8cyl 4A)

    They wanted $5000.
So what happened....first he drove the car into the pond.....that is fairly normal down here, we get almost one a day doing that.
Then when it didn't work he decided to say it was vandalized?
And where did the picture of the car in the pond come from....his Facebook page?
After watching Hot Bench, Judge Judy, Judge Jerry.....I'd say anything is possible.

When I adopted my cat Lucy the shelter mentioned they had sent her for some dental work, but they didn’t tell me specifics and I didn’t ask. It wasn’t until she had been here for a few weeks that I discovered that she had both her upper fangs, one bottom one, and just one strip of teeth on her right lower jaw. Both sets of upper teeth and the left lowers were gone. No idea why, but aside from not liking chewy things she seems fine with everything.

They just announced that there are 2 corona virus cases here in the Ft. Lauderdale area - both are males, 65 and 72 years old, respectively.

2 deaths due to the virus on Florida's west coast. This virus is spreading geometrically in elderly people. This is, without doubt, a true pandemic.

I am going food shopping early Sunday morning to avoid people. I have developed an anxiety about going out of my condo. With eye surgery on Tuesday I have to be cautious.

    Seems prudent.

Learned today a person was diagnosed in the county in CA where my 81 year old mother lives. As she stays home all the time, save doctor appointments, I'm only mildly concerned.

I tried that twice, but they screwed up both orders even though I was explicit as to brand and description of each item. I buy a lot of frozen items such as vegetables, entrees, etc., which defrost quickly in our climate.

I prefer shopping myself until I get to a point that it becomes overwhelming to me. Sunday morning at 8:00 AM is perfect - very few people around!

The casino is giving away $100 gift cards to Publix today and tomorrow. I canceled mine because there is no way I am going into a crowded casino at this time. 80% of the gamblers are senior citizens from all over South Florida - many who are fresh off a cruise or airplane flight from the northeast and Midwest.

I'm not sure if Kroger delivers to home here, but I can order online by clicking exactly the item I want on the Kroger website after logging in (or use the app on your cellphone which tells the aisle item is located in the store). When I'm in the store I see workers pushing long carts with multiple plastic baskets on them for various orders. They are picking the items from the shelf and bagging things in the produce and placing them in the baskets which have bar codes on the end. They are picking items for multiple orders at once. Then the customers pull up to an area at end of store and workers bring out their grocery order. They place it in their trunk or back of their soccer mom SUV. And the customer is gone a few minutes after calling as they pull up in the parking space to notify they are at the store and ready.

If there's anything I can't find in Kroger, I ask one of the "cart people." Most are great PR folks telling exactly the aisle and relative location.

I don't know if there's an extra charge for this or not. But my point is folks declare exactly the item as the customer clicks on the ordering app.

There's often a longer line waiting to pull up to get one of the 10 or so spaces for pickup than for the pharmacy drive up windows that are on the same side of the building.

@abacomike could use this type of internet grocery shopping.

My son and his wife get groceries delivered, but not a bunch of frozen stuff in 90 degree Florida heat. I don't know how that would work out.

Ordering on line and picking it up is probably a better bet.

    Can't you get groceries delivered?
Don't let him fool you about his orders getting screwed up. Dispite what he has told us about the little old ladies in the produce department, he actually likes that interaction. :p

Last time I picked up an order at the local Kroger there were a couple cars waiting in line at the pharmacy drive thru but I was the only customer at the click list pick up area. Like most things it depends on day of the week and time of day I suppose.

I have used the Kroger delivery option before but it's not an "in-house" experience. Kroger partners with Instacart here for the actual shopping/delivery when you choose the delivery option online. Which might explain why Mike was not satisfied with his delivery experience.

Last year a friend told me that she was charged for some items on her Kroger delivery order which never got delivered to her. That was her 1st and last delivery order even though she still uses the pick up service.

    Ymmv.

Thursday we had lunch at the del Lago casino near Seneca Falls. The place was packed with elderly gamblers. If ever there was an at risk population it was there. None seemed concerned.

Funny, all the casino commercials show pretty young models in evening dresses frolicking and laughing. Maybe they were all home sick. :'(

I looked the other day and the cruise I am trying to get my wife on board (get it?) was exactly the same price as weeks earlier.

Cruises further out are not dropping yet. Wait until after final payment and they have a higher than usual number of cancellations.

I don't know if it is a scheduled sale or because of the hysteria, but Alaska has some crazy deals out of Seattle right now. One can fly \to many places coast to coast and even Hawaii for under $200 RT. Really tempting.

I think if you wait a little longer you can get the Corona Virus for even less.

AbacoMike: Try Bankrate.com to compare CDs, Savings and other rates. I currently have 3 online savings accounts, earning between 1.5-1.7%. Of course, rates going down regularly...

Being 59.5+, what I should have done was cashed out some of my retirement funds and bought a midlife crisis car (or a house on The Cape). Then today, I'd have the car/home, whereas I no longer have those funds. My 20/20 hindsight remains excellent, while I haven't found the DeLorean properly equipped to allow me to go back to the future to determine my best financial strategy.

OF: Yeah, I love casino commercials, nothing but well dressed models with big smiles. Usually moving in slow motion. Funny, I"ve never been asked to be in one of those commercials.

Heading to Mohegan Sun for a couple of nights at the end of the week. Wish me luck, both financially and health-wise!

About a month ago I looked up what the C250 would be worth as a trade in on a 2016. Edmunds gave me a trade-in value of $11,600. It is a great car and I would find it hard to give it up for $11600.
Today I got a letter in the mail from my Mercedes dealer.....it says TRADE-IN ALERT. My C Class is worth approximately $8600! They say I can use it as a down payment on a new car.
    I don't think so. :@

As much as dogs do OK without teeth, cats are even more adaptable! One of ours had stomatitis, which for lack of a better explanation, is an autoimmune disorder where her body was rejecting her teeth. She had a lot of painful gum lesions and decay, so we ended up having a full mouth extraction done. She is so much happier without those nasty, painful teeth, and the improvement was almost immediate. She will even eat some dry food, because the kibble our cats get is small enough. They barely chew their food anyway, so the lack of teeth isn't a big deal once she learned to grab it with her gums.

no clue if anything related to Corona, or maybe because it was miserable and rainy out, but Iron Hill (where we went for dinner) seemed a lot less crowded than normal. But we sit at the bar/lounge side, and sometimes that is crowded with after work groups. Now that could be impacted by fear.

I like Iron Hill. We are also getting a Miller’s Ale House in Deptford at the site of the old Don Pablo’s. It’s completely gutted inside right now.
we used to love DP and go there all the time. Great fajitas. But toward the end, quality went down the tubes. Got grungy too. We stopped going at all a few years before they closed. I have never been to a Millers but would not mind trying at some point.

oh, TLX damage update. Talked to insurance today (his, not mine). He confirmed that it was his bad, so GUICO is covering it all. Goes in Wednesday to get fixed. They supply a rental until it is done, nothing involving my insurance at all. Just a little hassle having to take it in, but not really that big of a deal. as long as it looks good as new and I don't take a hit at lease turn in time, don't really care. once they finish it I bring the rental back and retrieve my car. and being a lease, no need to haggle about DV!

Funny thing about the old folks at the casino. We were cautioned not to leave tips for the waitress on the table lest the geezers swoop in and steal them. I guess that after the SS check is gone they get desperate. :(

    $11,600? That’s pretty low for a 2014. I don’t blame you for keeping it.
