About a month ago I looked up what the C250 would be worth as a trade in on a 2016. Edmunds gave me a trade-in value of $11,600. It is a great car and I would find it hard to give it up for $11600.
Today I got a letter in the mail from my Mercedes dealer.....it says TRADE-IN ALERT. My C Class is worth approximately $8600! They say I can use it as a down payment on a new car.
    I don't think so. :@

    $11,600? That’s pretty low for a 2014. I don’t blame you for keeping it.
My Subaru dealer offered me $18,300 for our 2015 Outback.

Guess those fancy German cars don't hold their value all that well.
I get those "we want your car" letters every month. The Chevy dealer sends one for my truck and the BMW dealer sends one for the 535D. Amazingly, the exact same words and the letters come the same day every month.
And @michaell, you're right. The German cars don't hold their value. It's worth less than my son's 2008 Tacoma with over 150K miles on it!

My guess was, that if he had actually brought it to the dealer which had a newer one he was interested in(back when that whole discussion was going on), he would have gotten a $7500 trade in offer.

    @abacomike,
Just saw a banner ad on my computer,
Synchrony Bank, 2% for 12 months.
I think my Lowe's credit card goes though that bank.

Stick....good news on your claim, seems like it is going as smooth as possible. I still say you are the victim and the least they could do is give you a $100 gift certificate to a nice restaurant for all your trouble. ;)

Just returned from food shopping at Walmart. Store was fairly empty. Was able to get my TP, but the shelves were bare in the disinfectant aisle for wipe-it's. Did get a Lysol spray with bleach though for the kitchen and bathrooms. They were a little low on vitamin D whole milk gallons, but I was able to pick up one with a sell before date of March 28th. Eggs were also plentiful.

Everything else I needed was in stock so I am OK for 12-14 days. I suspect they will be very busy later today.

Even if I wanted to trade in for a newer one I couldn't do it. If I was to buy my C 250 it would probably cost $16000, it would be like throwing away $7000.
What doesn't make sense is some people are asking $20 or $21k for 2014 c 250s. I could get a 2017 for $24 or $25k.........I think I would pay $5k to move up 3 years.

There was a guy working in the supermarket today trying to sign people up for their co-branded Mastercard. When I was about 15 feet away from him he sneezed loudly (into his sleeve) and drew dirty looks from me and everyone else nearby. Poor guy, he might have just been allergic to something but everyone immediately branded him as Patient Zero. :open_mouth:

I react with sneezes to some perfumes and body scents. I don't know why some people think "clean" means that everyone for 20 ft around them has to smell them.

I wonder if the Carvana and CarMaxs do that too. I’ve gotten some pretty rich estimates from them when I run a car through their estimators.

I’ve always said that dealer’s put a 30% mark up on run of the mill cars. I checked a dealer’s website where we had delivered cars and picked up checks. The dealer paid between $27-33k and the cars were listed for $39-41k.

Allergy season has arrived here, with some plants/trees blossoming, and some pollen in the air. As I have aged, it hits me harder every year, and I am now somewhat congested with an occasional cough or sneeze. I have a game tonight, and I am going to cough and hack and sneeze every time I am challenged by an opponent.

Yikes! Stay away from that deal. Your MB might plague you with expensive repairs but those 12-16 Fords are bad news. You might try a 17-18 though. Every one I’ve driven has been fine.

It’s funny that a dealer would put that on his lot knowing the history. Maybe they couldn’t get a bid at the auction.

I don’t understand why we were taught to sneeze or cough with a hand over our mouth. Then we touch a door pull or utensil in a salad bar or other food line, and contaminate what we touch thereby giving the infected droplets to someone. It is much better to sneeze or cough into the bend of one’s forearm/arm at least to keep our hands cleaner. I’m also favoring the knuckle or forearm bump rather than shaking hands especially during cold and flu season.

I haven’t done mine yet because I know I’ll owe at least $1600 like last year so you got some of what I have to pay them. I have been doing my taxes with H&R block since 2012 and every year since I have to pay more than few buck I get a box that tells me I might have to pay a penalty because of this so I should consider doing quarterly returns to avoid penalty but so far that hasn’t happened with the Feds. That ain’t the case with the state (PA) last year. I had to pay the state just under $700. So, they sent me a notice and forms last May with instructions of how to do quarterly returns. I hate paperwork so I ignored that notice just like I did a few years ago when I owed the state money. I guess they don’t like being ignored so in August I got a notice that I owned them just shy of 20 bucks because I didn’t file quarterly returns like they wanted. If the state of PA thinks they are going to scare me into filing quarterly returns to save a measly 20 bucks they're nuts. That ain’t gonna happen, believe me. I just hope that being a repeat offender doesn't result in a greater penalty. If so, eventually they will get my attention.

The real down side of this is that since Mrs. j writes all the checks in our house (long story about this), when I gave the bill to her she wanted to know what it was for. I seem to remember saying something like, “just pay it’. She insisted on knowing why so I had to confess. Her reply was, “I sure hope this isn’t going to happen every year”, to which I said something like, “and what if it does” ? To this she said, “IT JUST BETTER NOT”. :@ That could be interpreted as a few laps around the dining room table every year in August just because of this; in addition to the random laps that always seem to pop up for no apparent reason. :'(

They wanted you to actually file quarterly returns? Or did they want you to send in quarterly tax pre-payments for not withholding enough taxes?

Funny thing about the old folks at the casino. We were cautioned not to leave tips for the waitress on the table lest the geezers swoop in and steal them. I guess that after the SS check is gone they get desperate. :(

I put my tip in the servers hand or on their tray, as most people seem to do.

I think their best hope is they are thinking if this guys C250 is a lemon or he is having expensive repairs, maybe he will bale out and buy a newer car.
Or, they think I am a compulsive new car buyer.....and will make any kind of deal to get into a newer car.

IRS seems efficient this year. I E-filed my fed taxes last Saturday night, and the wife noticed on Friday that the money was already in our account. Only a few hundred $, but still nice little bonus!

OK, I guess I said that wrong. They wanted me to "send in quarterly tax pre-payments for not withholding enough taxes". I assume (if I wanted to read their instructions I would know how they want me to do it) that I could just divide by 4 the amount that I owed for the year that I just filed and pay that amount quarterly, but like I said, I'm not doing that until the penalty gets too high.

If the Feds can let me slide and I owe them more each year than the state, I don't know why the state is being so aggressive about this but they are the ones in control. So, I either pay or pay the price. Again, for 20 bucks a year, I don't want to play with paper.

Ohio is somewhat lenient on the amount due. I suspect it's about $500 or some less at which they get interested. The State of Ohio collects for an individual income tax as well as for some local school districts which have been able to pass earnings/income taxes. My DIL's employer didn't withhold for school taxes, among other things, so I was calling to ask while doing their taxes last year. This year my son is doing the taxes after my capable tutelage last year. Last year was a mess.

I recall years back I had under withheld for the two of us filing jointly for Ohio. I believe the words were they want to see effort at paying (the amount that was withheld in a timely manner) and then they only get interested as the amount is higher. There is an elaborate algorithm for the Ohio taxes in a step-by-step check to see if you owe penalty.

Why not just increase the withholding amount at the employer?

My Dad used to pay quarterly tax payments to the IRS because no taxes were withheld from any of his income after he retired. All his income was from CD's and bonds and investments.

I guess you don't believe me when I said I'm retired. My RMD's have tax withheld but not my SS or any interest that the banks report or my other investments that are reported. I've heard people say for years, "use their money for as long as you can". I got away with that with the state for years but not last year. So far so good with the Feds.

FWIW, I just looked at past Fed returns because I knew there was BIGGY a while back. In 2015 the last year I worked, although I had my employer take out what I thought would prevent a large payment by me for that year, something went wrong. I owed over 6 grand to the Feds that year so things are improving with only owing around $1600 for 2018. As you might have guessed, Mrs. j had a conniption that year. :@

Not being a good citizen for shorting the government $20 a year! You cause them more money in paperwork and stamps than the money you are holding back....should be ashamed :p

Yep, this why governments lose money but they keep paper pushers employed. If the public only knew. :'(

BTW, if we didn't have so many paper pushers we wouldn't know when to deport you guys back to Canada every year. ;)

was out walking after dinner and in a parking lot there was a distinctive Orange Stinger. I guess that is the GT3 that RB was threatening to look at for a while but never did.

I just realized something after reminiscing about what I did on Saturday mornings when I was 10-12 years old - I AM OLD! 😩

Every Saturday morning I went to the Bliss Theater with my friends - a 3 block walk from my apartment. I had 50 cents in my pocket - 25 cents for admission to see 25 cartoons and a movie and 25 cents for a bag of popcorn and a Coca Cola soda.

Today, I don't know of anything I can buy with 50 cents. BTW, gasoline was 23 cents a gallon at the Amoco Station. A slice of pizza was 15 cents and a Knish on the Coney Island boardwalk was 15 cents. A hotdog and fries at Nathan's in Coney Island was 25 cents.

That was 65 years ago - I AM OLD!

like I say, getting old beats the alternative. Same with taxes. if the worst thing that happens this year is I make so much money that I have to pay a lot in taxes, I can live with that.

I'm older, I remember when gas was 20 cents a gallon. When I lived in the Burgh when I was 12, before my parents moved to a prosperous eastern suburb, I remember when a slice of pizza was a dime. The movie cost the same but they really soaked you rich New York kids for pop corn and a Coke. That was probably only 15 cents in the Burgh not 25 cents like you paid.
