We finally got our stimulus check yesterday. About 7:PM a neighbor boy about 10 years old rang our door bell and handed it to us. Left in their mailbox by mistake, about 3 houses down. The address on the envelope was correct, envelope had a transparent window showing it obviously contained a check, addresses on homes and mailboxes plainly marked, etc. I guess we were lucky that it was left with someone who knew us. Good old Post Office.

And the post office retirement fund for those folks who mix up the mail wants us to bail it out again. I have had a PO Box for decades to avoid some of the misdelivery problems. And disappearing mail in the old days.

But even the office puts things in the wrong PO Box. My replacement Shell credit cards didn't come. Got replacements. 3 weeks later or so, the originals showed up in my PO box marked that they were put in someone else's PO box.

I wonder where my stimulus check is? Hmmmm. Is there a way to see if it's been cashed by somebody?

You know, after all the years I’ve been receiving mail, never, ever have I had a piece go missing as a result of the post office or postal carrier leave some of my mail at the wrong address (to my knowledge). The Post Office has gotten a bad wrap recently. There has never been a government agency, that I happen to use ever day, that has been more rock solid reliable as the Post Office.

I don’t see too many dealers putting decals on cars much any more...maybe CarMax or some BHPH lots. But, nothing from other more mainstream dealers. I do see the license frames with dealers’ names, but that’s about it. That doesn’t bother me. If I knew the dealership was kicking in some $$$ to Breast Cancer charities, I wouldn’t even mind having a pink license frame, at least for a little while.

Hertz BR.....that’s been coming for years. I have elite status with Hertz, too. Don’t rent much from them anymore. But, for many years, I was renting a car from them 40+ times/year. They always offered me outstanding service and would usually kick me up several notches to their super premium vehicles at no charge. That’s the way I got to drive Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac Escalades (which really wasn’t that great), Volvos, Infinitis, etc. But, UBER, LYFT, etc really ate into their business. They’ll have to find new business model as I don’t see the rental car industry coming back....UNLESS...they offer nothing but unique cars...like e-vehicles, exclusively.

My mail delivery used to be very good, but the last few years it has really gone downhill. Seems like a different person delivers our mail about every day. We have been at the same address for 15 years.

As for mail and things getting lost... I had kept PO Box addresses when in graduate school and working summers away from home area. Forwarding any mail to them was easier than hoping the apartment address would get forwarded.

Then couple years later, I hadn't gotten things from my hometown bank, like tax statements. I later got a damaged copy of my Automotive News with a bill for forwarding it or a note it had been delivered to wrong address. Down the road from the apartments to someone who had a sorta similar last name. Not close. This was in the 70's.

I've kept a PO box ever since.

And delivery errors did increase in the last decade or so. Different type of employees and different attitudes.

Additional irritation came that mailing a letter or package to my son while at The OSU, first on campus and then off campus, was erratic. A couple never got there. A package to his near campus address with something he needed took 12 days. The explanations from the nearby branch from which the mail is sorted and delivered were hilarious. One was that any mail not delivered under some requirements had to go back to Columbus sorting location (3 miles away) and then processed and come back to the local PO branch. That office had the highest number of complaints from patrons on the various complaint sites on the internet.

By that time I had started just taking things over and dropping them while he was in class or at the student center office. Or sending them UPS.

Latest is that I get mail in my PO box for someone else's PO Box. Oh, the Shell cards that disappeared for weeks? The postmaster said some clubs or groups have boxes that they don't check other than once a month. That explained why it was lost so long.

I’d let the post office know about that screw up. You’re right, who knows what would have happened otherwise. There’s been a lot of stories about stimulus checks being sent to the wrong address but a correctly addressed check being mis-delivered is shocking.

I got my check several weeks ago by direct deposit, my older son got his a few days earlier by mail. My disabled son for whom I am representative payee can’t even get confirmation that he’s eligible (which he is). Shame that they send money out real quick to people who don’t really need it but delay on paying folks who are desperately poor.

My son is lucky that we’re able to support him while the system plods along.

Those LED projectors are massive-margin options installed in-port, I believe. Probably costs $5. Pano is probably on half of cars, so that one can be tough to get around, but the heated steering wheel should have been rare in your market. My car has the entire warmth and comfort package, and I like it - but the weather here is cooler and more dreary than there. I also like pano and usually drive with the shade open, unless the sun is really strong.

I am amused/surprised/disappointed the sunshade is optional now, on W212 it was included in the mandatory "Premium 1" package, and is a useful feature.

I was over to the mall today to get some exercise. After the exercising, I "lusted" for chicken as I passed the food court and Chick-Fil-A. Their chicken strips are great.

But the main topic of this post is how car manufacturers can come up with some cheesy ways to grab more money from the public at large. You all know I had to settle for an E450 4MATIC with a couple of options I would never add to a car - namely a heated steering wheel (good up north , but not down here in FL) and Exterior Logo Projections.

I've never seen them before, but since I had to park in a poorly lighted garage during severe thunderstorms, as I approached the driver's door, I see this huge lit projection of the Mercedes star logo on the ground adjacent to the door. I said to myself, "...so that's what they look like!"

What a waste of $250 on a car. The heated steering wheel is also $250. Along with that panorama sunroof ($1,000) that I'll never use, that's $1500 of useless options, IMO. If I had been able to get a car with the options I would have preferred (Active Multi-contoured front seats with massage and rear power sunshade for $1760 total) I would have been a little happier, but it is what it is.

Just can't get over those LED Logo Projectors - a waste!🤨

Doubt if the light costs much to make, especially just adding the logo to a light.
The pano roof is a safety feature...at least that is what they told us at the factory in Stuttgart.....it adds strength to the roof,
Like I say, even on a cool morning the heated steering wheel is nice, and if you have arthritis it is therapy.

I never open the sunroof...but, on cloudy or cool days I like the light coming in...and it feels more open, almost like a convertible. It's like if I lived in an apartment, I would probably never go out on the balcony, but, I want it there so I don't feel enclosed.
Interesting spin on something that makes you top heavy where you want to add weight the least, up high. I'll take sheet metal over glass in a wreck.

I’ve gotten a few pieces of mail for my neighbor delivered to me over the years but generally very good. I do recall one bill I paid never being received but I suspect that when companies screw up in processing your payment they blame the PO. Accuracy has certainly been better than the parcel services which have routinely delivered to the wrong address.

I hope you’re wrong about the rental car industry. Even with all the money the government is throwing at me, I’d rather go back to work.

My BMW dealer did me a big favor and finally sold the Maserati Gran Turismo that sorely tempted me every time I dropped by. It's a real Maser, unlike the wannabe V6 Ghiblis that are only purchased to wear rather than drive. The Gran Turismo's Ferrari V8 sounded glorious- and if I'd heard it fire up one more time I probably would have succumbed- bank balance be damned.

The biggest rip-off on un-needed, unwanted car add-ons is the back bumper logo decal. Not only do I dislike the look of them but they sometimes get scratched or damaged and they have the gall to charge an extra $100+ for them on certain makes. I know, pure profit.

A big waste of money buying an overpriced license frame holder at our AutoNation MB dealer. If I didn't buy it then I would have to install it myself and I would have to drive with a pink plastic frame until I could buy one somewhere. :@
I told my dealership manager that if he delivered my new car with a pink AutoNation license plate frame, I would put my Palm Beach chrome frame on (a competitor of AutoNation). He told me he would put on a chrome frame with the dealership name. I said great!

As much as I honor and respect AutoNation for their work with eradicating breast cancer, those pink frames are a bit ludicrous looking. 🤓
Maybe because of your previous management role at a dealership (IIRC Infiniti) you keep the dealership tag on. That is the first thing I remove, including any decals or badges. A little WD-40, dental floss, and a soft cloth work wonders.
I really don't mind the tag frame because the dealership name is in such small letters at the top that unless you are within 10-15 feet of the rear of the car, you really can't read it. Still better than a pink plastic frame.🤙

Canada Post up here has improved quite a bit since their dark days of the '70s and '80s when they seemed to go on strike every year. About 6-7 years ago they announced they were moving to a community mailbox model for urban areas, with no more door to door delivery. It sort of made sense since mail volumes were going down so why have all those letter carriers walking routes? My area was among the first to get one and while it is somewhat less convenient than door to door, most of what I get now is just advertising material so it goes in the bin right away. But even at that, I still occasionally get mail intended for an adjacent box or vice-versa. Same with packages, maybe even more often actually (they have a few package-sized boxes where those can be delivered and you get the key left in your mailbox). I think there is always going to be an error factor if you have humans putting stuff into slots.

My gripe is that shortly after Trudeau was elected in 2015 he announced that he was canning the program. But he left what had already been done in place, so we have the worst of all possible worlds with 2-tier mail delivery depending on your neighborhood.

I just checked both cars. front is plain holder, no frame. The rear on both cars is the black plastic dealer frame. And the TLX has the chrome dealer name, while the RDX has no sticker of any kind. works for me.

Down here, they do not install the front tag/frame hardware on the front bumper because we only have rear tags/plates. I noticed that the hardware and holder are in the trunk in plastic wrapping should the car be sold in a State with front tags/plates.

Have never really understood why many States issue both front and rear license plates. Those states could save big bucks if they eliminated the front tag. Does anyone know the rationale for both front and rear plates?

We have SunPass (transponder) down here for our toll roads - but they also have "toll-by-plate"! They take a photo of your rear plate and bill you monthly - they add an administrative charge for each toll along with the higher toll for those cars not using SunPass.

95% of all toll roads in the State do not have "Toll Collectors" but use SunPass or toll-by-plate. They have huge penalties for non-payment of tolls - and they enforce out-of-state non-payers fiercely.

If a vehicle that has not paid its tolls goes through a toll gate In the State, FHP is alerted immediately and the vehicle is stopped with an electronic warrant for unpaid tolls. I read recently that a driver was pulled over and the car towed to a facility and was not released to the owner until all tolls and penalties were paid. It was a New York plate. The bill came to $375+ and over $1500 in penalties and fees.

There was a story in the paper about someone who got cited for it, which is why I know about it.

Miami Beach has a special city ordinance that states that any license plate frame that hides or obscures the name of the State is illegal and they issue tickets for violations. I don't know of any other cities that have a similar ordinance down here - but it does make sense.

Hey, we pay through the nose to help the pensions of other public sector heroes, at least USPS, by a weird edict, tries to fund their own. Don't get me started on praetorian sector bennies. Postal services should be a common/social good, not a profit center - they exist that way in mature developed economies anyway.

I've had few issues with USPS, maybe it's a regional thing. Dealing with the agents at the post office itself can be quirky, but the delivery is usually competitively priced, and often faster than FedEx or UPS. Via a hobby where I trade goods, I ship things not infrequently, and have yet to be disappointed.

The thought of the average person with no EV experience renting one makes me cringe and laugh at the time. The rental agency would need to have a fleet of tow trucks to assist the dopes when they run out of juice.

I am in an affiliate program where I received a lot of Hertz points - haven't actually paid for a Hertz rental probably in over a decade, and I got PC via a status match (maybe things like that didn't help their solvency). No complaints other than the basic spec of some cars, which is a thing across all American rental fleets. It'll be interesting to see how they rebuild, I have read some chatter that Sixt might want to buy out some of their locations.

Mail delivery - in each of the houses we've owned, community mailboxes were in place. I suspect it saves time.

Where I now live is in an "unincorporated" part of the county, so our delivery is done via contractors. Our regular person drives a 1st gen Tundra with the clamshell doors and a cap on the back. She has "U.S. Mail" magnet stickers on each door.

We occasionally get someone else's mail - most recently it was for a house up the street from us. Our house number is "10018" and we got mail for "10081". An infrequent error.

Though, the private companies (and Amazon) are about as accurate. Both our house and the house across the street from us get packages delivered most every day, and we'll get each others boxes from time to time.

The last time a first class mail piece was brought to us by someone else, it was from another street. Not even a dyslexic misreading of 1024 for 1042. When I took the piece into the office the next day to collect my box mail, the desk person just groaned.

Until the last year the counter people at the office were interested and cared. Now, not so much.

And for box deliveries, FedEx has made an occasional mistake. 1042 brings the items down that are left at their door. Two years ago I got a neighbor's insulin delivery in below zero weather, either FDX or UPS. I don't know how easily damaged that is by extra cold. The box is insulated and I assume they have some method of stored cold inside for transportion in hot climates to keep the insulin cold.

The error percentage is fairly low for all 3 systems.

Dang the dealer that my SIL bought from. Even though the state didn’t require a front plate, the dealer insisted on putting theirs on front. My SIL replaced the dealer plate with a chrome decorative plate with the Acura logo but yuck. When we got it I removed the bracket only to find there were plastic filler plugs that are body color to fill in the mounting holes, but the plugs are no where to be found. It looked awful, so I reluctantly replaced the front decorator plate. I looked online and those little plugs are crazy expensive. Besides, I can easily recognize the car when my daughter is out and about as there are several similar pearl white TLs in this area running about.

We have always had to have plates front and back. I have rarely thought a front plate looked out of place. We have the same cars here, yet they all make a way to have a front plate, and it never looks weird...

    The last weird one was the 58 Edsel where they forgot to allow for a front plate;

It was nerve wracking the one time I had to install the front plate bracket. the PA dealer I got the Sonata from (they are rear plate only) forgot to install the bracket, and mailed me the plates. so not worth driving all the way back over, so I had to take power tools to it myself. Really pretty simple, and basically idiot proof. Plus it was a lease, so why should I care? The rest of them either had the mounting plate on already, or the dealer put it on when they installed the plates. I am so used to it, just looks normal.

the only car I had that didn't have something screwed into the front bumper (not counting the old days, of stuff like my duster with a chrome battering ram, with a mounting place designed in) was my 2000 Miata. That was a metal C bracket that bolted into the frame in the back, and looped under the bumper and just stuck out the front with the plate attached. So did not touch the plastic bumper at all.

Agreed; I despise them- and count myself lucky that they are not required in KY.

“The thought of the average person with no EV experience renting one makes me cringe and laugh at the time. The rental agency would need to have a fleet of tow trucks to assist the dopes when they run out of juice.“

Not just on EVs either. I recently viewed some videos of repairs done on customer cars brought in on the hook. On one the oil had turned to glue after 46k miles without a change. The customer was asked why she didn’t put in new oil and she responded that it already had oil when she bought it.

In other news, this just happened around the corner from me. Guess the holiday partying has begun.

The insurance companies sending us money because miles driving is way low...Should I be insulted if I got $50 and have 2 cars insured and my sister got $50 and only has 1 car insured? Same insurance company.

I know you get a multi-car discount, but it's not that much.

I think all manufacturers have forgotten to allow for front plates. That’s why you have to drill holes in the bumper. The last car to get it right was my ‘84 Corvette which had an indent in the front bumper for the plate. You could buy a decorative insert to place there in states with no front plate.

If I had a Ferarri or Porsche, I might worry about the front plate.
Speaking of the design forgetting to allow for a front plate, how about this one?

No stimulus check here yet but the last two digits of my social are in the high 70's and chart we found online said we'd get ours by mid-June. Pretty stupid as folks need the money, NOW!! Such inefficiency is insulting really. Luckily since I was furloughed at work, qualified for unemployment insurance. Very happy but, ready to go back!
Am quite happy to be a retired city letter carrier. Was told my first day, "you'll never get rich but you'll make a good living". And this is so true, the d d is in or joint checking the first business day of the month. After putting in 31 years, feel I deserve it as most times, they put more stress on us than was necessary. Luckily, we all knew our jobs and did them to the best of our ability. Those days are long gone. And one thing, there are two types of letter carriers, city and rural. Not having the same exact rules. Glad I was a city carrier but where we live, it's rural. I always went the extra mile for my customers and still communicate with a few even though I've been gone about 10 years. Our new carrier, well, let's just say her work ethic is nowhere near where mine was!

I filed a complaint on-line and let them know it was OK to interview me.

These days a lot of criminals are caught by security cameras. Every bit of information can help....why would you not have a front license plate?

Because, it requires the front bumper to be drilled to mount the plate the license attaches to. Plus, it's pretty unsightly. Ohio I think either has done away with them, or plan to very soon. They'll charge the same amount for two plates, but only deliver one. It nets the state more money by reducing plate manufacturing costs (which can't be much given they are manufactured by penal system inmates).

I probably haven't mounted a front plate in over 15 years. Don't see the benefit, nor have the desire to take a drill to my bumper.
My sentiments exactly! Why should some nebulous state “benefit” be allowed to make my car unnecessarily ugly?
I had to put a “Cooper” plate and frame on the front of the Clubman because an idiot P.O. had mounted a bracket already.

Ha ha, no. The minister and his wife across the street run a day care. Closed I’m sure. No school buses running this spring.

Hey, here’s a sharp car I found online. I hope everybody doesn’t rush right out there.

You should consider yourself lucky, my insurance company said they were giving a 15% discount for April and May only but wouldn’t say how or when. They suggested they might wait until next year and knock a few bucks off the premium for 2021.

Most likely they’ll give a $50 reduction but jack the rates up $500.
