I’m guessing longevity has a lot to do with sun exposure. A tire that is in the shade or a garage most of the time could last longer because it wouldn’t see a lot of UV light.

I had lunch this week with my buddy who moved to the country. He was telling me about his adventures of helping a mid-70s friend of his up there who is both a hoarder and car guy. The fellow has his own warehouse that is totally jammed with stuff - I was there with my friend a few years back and it is a sight to see. The fellow decided he wanted to recommission one of the cars inside, a '63 Galaxie hardtop he has had since 1970. Originally a Boston car, it has less than 30K miles on it and is totally untouched and solid. Probably not a hugely valuable car and it has the Ford small-block V8 (I think a 260) and the 2-speed automatic transmission. Bench seat, column shift, medium blue with white top. Apparently the owner parked in there in the late '70s when the water pump failed and he never replaced it. That has now been done by my friend. The engine was not stuck thankfully, and they are going through the process of replacing all of the consumables and rubber parts under the hood before trying to start it.

One of the challenges was that it still has the original tires on it from 1963! They just wanted them to hold air long enough to let them roll it around in the building. He said he was nervous inflating them as he feared them bursting but amazingly, they still held air, at least for a while.

One dealer doesn't let me order R20s.....it says 235 45R19.
Since they don't ask for front and back sizes, I assume they are the same, but I doubt I could put 19s on the back with 20s on the front...right?

We had a recycling day at the town municipal complex today.
I had some electronic things to get rid of, non working microwave, old computer stuff, some old boomboxes.
Asked a couple of my neighbors if they had anything I could take for them since I was going anyway.
Guy across the street says I might have some miscellaneous stuff you can take.
Yesterday he come over with a box for wires, keyboards, etc...
Then he says 'I have a TV in the basement, can you help me bring it up?'
Of course, it's a 32 inch tube job that weighs a ton.
We managed to get it out of the basement and into my Explorer.
Some kid from the football team picked up out of the back no problem.
Good thing I got there early, waited 1/2 hour in line until it started.
The traffic was backed up for about a mile by the time I left.

Perfect position for an easy fix, even if it penetrated. I don’t even pull the wheel off for those. Easier to fix while on the car.

I'd inspect with light along the angle of the groove to see if it looks like it actually penetrates the
bottom of the groove.

That head on the bolt hasn't been driven on much or the head would be further worn and
the washer would show more wear from hitting the road.

My hope is that it actually is just sticking between the treads. A bolt like that
usually has a blunt, flat end. Doesn't penetrate the rubber at the bottom of the
tread easily.

I'd have AAA come and change the tire putting on the spare. THEN take the tire
to your favorite repair location for their inspection. If not, this might qualify as
road service under your insurance policy.

IF the bolt of that size has penetrated deeply into the rubber and through the
belt on the tire, I wouldn't want to have that size puncture of the belt filled with
a plug and seal on the inside. A penetration of that size would affect the belt's
physics and life, IMHO.

I would not drive more than a few blocks on that tire, hoping that the bolt has not
penetrated.

the groove with just friction on the sides holding it back. If it has penetrated
the early resistance would be higher.

@qbrozen I like the idea of getting it fixed while on the wheel if possible.

I thought about wedging it out but if the tire is punctured it gets more complicated....would like to have it lifted out at the dealer or at the tire dealer, in case it is punctured.

Mrs D says it has made a noise for awhile now....but she only drives a few hundred miles a month. I wish she mentioned it when it was at the dealers all day for an oil change and new battery. Also, they were supposed to inspect the tires at that time........hmmmmm.

that bolt is so obvious anyone would have seen it when they were working on the car.

And it drives me nuts too when the wife or daughter mentions a problem well after it first happened.

Thanks....one popular tire chain had a pull down where you state the year, make, model and it tells you what tires to check, and they gave the wheel size as 19". Another chain said 20" which is what is on the car now.

In olden days the bride got the wedding her family could afford. Today that's not good enough- the groom's family now gets buttonholed to help provide the ceremony and reception that the bride thinks she deserves.

I still have my standing offer. I will pay for plane tickets to Vegas and they can get married in the Elvis chapel. Then I will give them money toward a car.

My daughter was all in on the car part.

I got something like 13-14 years out of the prior set of tires on the car - no signs of rot either, but they wore a little weird as the car needed some front end work. The prior set were cheapish Les Schwab specials - in ~1999, the set of 4 installed wasn't much more than $200, so they definitely owed me nothing.

4 words - justice of the peace. If princess wants more, she can do it herself. This creating a problem is likely a sign of more issues to come.

My parents did it that way, as they used the money for more important things, like housing, cars, raising kids, etc.

My sister's first event was an expensively catered affair that they both saved up for and got some family help as well. Marriage lasted under 5 years. Second time, a bit more simple, and the marriage is much better.

I suspect may have sport package on the car. The front versus back tires will be different sizes. I would drive to tire place and let them look at this. If it did not puncture tire, then okay. If punctured tire, then they may be able to repair. I have used BJs tire service recently. I also use costco tire service. I had used goodyear tire center in the past when I knew one of the managers.

In olden days a wedding was a quick ceremony with the bride and groom wearing just their best clothes with a small get together that was usually a pot luck. Anything else would have been only for the wealthy.

Weddings are such a racket. So much so that there is a Netflix series called Marriage or Mortgage. That people even choose between them is mind blowing.

I would have eloped. That said, we had a very nice wedding - not over the top, very fun - thanks to my wife’s parents (mine did the rehearsal dinner).

@mlevine Thanks...I was pretty sure they were the same because the chain stores only list one size for for that model...except one chain says 20" which is what it is, the other chain 19". I went out and checked and the front and back are the same.
I always hesitate a bit with the chains....once I took a course to try and get a job at Goodyear - I was desperate for a job (about 1975). The instructor told us when they make tires they grade the tires when they are produced;
1. The best tires go to the car makers, people usually replace their tires with the same brand,
2. The next best tires go to the indie tire shops, if the tires are good ones they will recommend them
3. 3rd grade tires go to their own stores....people came in to buy that brand and the dealer has no choice - at the time they only sold their own brand.
That is why I am not keen on franchised tire dealers.
I do agree, it is best to have them look at the nail or bolt, at a tire place just in case!

I heard a guy call in on the radio a few days ago, he was going to pay $30000 for his daughters wedding.
The daughter decided she didn't want a wedding....she eloped.
He figured the deal was off and he decided to use the money he set aside to buy a new car.
A few weeks later the daughter asked if she could have her wedding money to help put a down payment on a house!

The lawn at this house has never been great, and I don't need it looking perfect, but now it is basically mud.

A 260 in that might even be kind of uncommon, sounds like a pretty car in those colors. If prepping for sale, those tires might even add some interest, the "barn find" that has been hip for awhile. That generation can be real hoaders, maybe the depression-era memories of their parents wore off on them.

Same here, my wife worked for Sky Chef in college so we had the reception at the big restaurant(now gone) at the Greater Cincinnati Airport. We flew straight out from there, mainly because I had pulled so many pranks at other weddings that I needed a quick getaway.

I got my snow tires direct from the MB dealer - pricing was virtually the same as the chain tire stores, and they'll store them for me for free.

He should have offered her a ride to the bank in his new car. Our wedding cost us $20. My family gave us a refrigerator, her family gave us a stove. We bought our own furniture and paid for our own honeymoon trip to Hawaii.

That fancy wedding paid by the bride’s family is a hold over from days when women were less valued and parents had to pay a dowry to get rid of them

Told my son a long time ago, big weddings are a waste of time and money. Regardless of what any bride (to be) or her family may want, I’ll pay for flight and hotel for a week in Europe. If that’s not wanted nor sufficient, I’ll just consider it a refusal of my generosity and keep my wallet closed.

Seriously, that's what I did last year. My front lawn was like that in parts, and where it wasn't mud it was all weeds. Years of me trying to rehab it with both manual and chemical weed removal, new box store dirt, seeds and fertilizer just never delivered much of anything worth all the effort. So when the stone wall guys were here last summer doing that, they mentioned they also did landscaping. It seemed a waste to have a nice new wall and that awful mess, so I had them do it. They rototilled everything that was there and removed all of what got dug up. They put down a truckload of new topsoil and then sodded. It has never looked so good.

a nice civil or church ceremony with just close family/friends (or the Elvis chapel!) to get the legal part over with, then a nice party (back lawn if you have room, or maybe a VFW type hall) with some platters of buffet food and a pail full of beer on ice is plenty for me. They end up married, and everyone has a good time, and nobody goes broke.

I remember writing out about 30k in checks related to the reception for my daughter's wedding.
My wife paid for a bunch of other stuff too, which added up.
A lot of people travelled 550 to 600 miles to go to the wedding, so I was ok paying for the reception.
They had to pay for travel, hotel rooms and their other meals.
Grooms family paid for a huge tent and catered BBQ in our back yard the night before for about 100 people.
Good thing we had the tent, it rained like crazy.

The info for tire as on the tire. Only use similar tires. Now the last number on tire is the speed rating. This number does not need to be the same, but must have at least similar or slightly more speed rating. If you belong to costco, BJS, and sams club there will sometimes run specials on tires. Costco only markets 3 brands. BJS and sams club I believe offers more brands. See on tire forums which brand will be better for your vehicle. I believe if you need a new tire may have to replace the front 2 or back 2 depending where bolt is. Hopefully it did not pierce tire and if it did, may be able to repair.

I took the Q5 to have two tires replaced, which I special ordered. Got home only to find they installed the wrong ones with a V speed rating instead of H, the receipt showed H. Back to the store, correct tires installed. On the way home the tire pressure lights up. Grrr. I found one tire over inflated, all adjusted to spec 33 and reset the monitor. What a comedy of errors though really no biggie.

One thing the Q5 and VW have is great traveling range. Take that EVs.

I know I’ve mentioned it before but our wedding was over the top and we paid for a good bit of it. Wife and I were talking the other day and while the memories are great we realized it was a big spend for a few hours.

High school graduation parties were a big thing here before covid anyway. Just 2 years ago a friend gave her 17 y/o son a $4K grad party with catered BBQ to feed 100 guests. As the party was still going on he asked her where his presents were. Single mom explained that "this party is your graduation present!" He was disappointed, she cried. I'm still telling the story.
