In the last couple of years, I’ve noticed that on my merchant’s copy of my credit card authorization form at restaurants and even fast food chains, that a tip is suggested for 18%, 20%, and 22% with the coinciding dollar and cents amount. That is what ticks me off when confronted by suggested tip amounts.
Why? Because if I am alone or with one other person, I usually leave 15% (20% if 3 or more) assuming that the service was satisfactory and the tab came to $40-$50 (up to $100+ with more than 2 people being served). So if I write in a tip of 15%, which is quite appropriate, the server might feel that the service he/she provided was less than satisfactory or recommended on the receipt. I have been asked that very question, “…was my service less than satisfactory?…”
I don’t like being put into that position by the establishment! This is done to embarrass the customer into leaving more than 15%, obviously.
Last Saturday my daughter said the low pressure light illuminated on the TL but one tire was showing 5lbs lower than the others. Oh boy, nail, screw in the tire? I had my wife and daughter inspect the tire. They rolled the car forwards and backwards to check the whole tire. Nothing. I have a little tire compressor which was used to inflate the tire. The next morning down 5lbs. I made an appointment at the tire store where I bought the tires. Confirmed reservation sent. When my wife and daughter arrived, a sign was posted on the door ‘closed until further notice’. Not happy. I instructed them to DT where I normally do business. They couldn’t get to it right away but called later stating the rim had a stress crack which is the source of the leak. Gripes. After multiple calls I found a matching used Acura rim and had it delivered to DT. DT was great and kept me informed and charged a minimal amount to mount and balance the tire on the replacement rim. When my wife went in to pick it up this evening she said they were so professional, her experience top notch. This comes from a person who isn’t easily impressed. I feel like I’m very lucky to only be out of pocket $120 and my daughter wasn’t stranded somewhere.
I’ve only seen one cracked rim in my life, that on an alloy on my son’s Buick Lesabre. I replaced 3 steel wheels on my cargo van because they had rusted to the point where they wouldn’t hold air. Does your daughter hit a lot of pot holes or curbs?

She scrunched a curb at Chik fil a a few weeks ago. A car veered into her path and she over corrected. It gave the rim moderate curb rash but not horrible. I guess that caused the stress crack which worsened thru time. To her credit she did confess when it happened.

Mrs. venture and I were out last evening running around and stopped at for a quick dinner at a national chain noted for their bread and soup.
After we ordered, the screen asked if we wanted to round up the amount and it would be donated to a charity of their choice. Then it asked if we wanted to add a tip for the person who took our order.
First of all, I can determine by myself which charity I want to donate to. Second – I’m not a bad tipper. During the height of the pandemic, I gave some of the young ladies (they always seemed to be young ladies) who brought orders out to the car tips of $50 and, occasionally, $100. At least they did something other than punching your order into a computer.
Get off my grass.
The thing with the change is purportedly due to a nationwide coin shortage. I’ve had that happen to me several times and like you decline to get shaken down. Once Sam’s Club rounded down to the nearest dollar so no change was required.
I liked that better.

That’s why I stick to cash with most of my purchases. No chance to get the guilt treatment.
It’s funny that I would be expected to tip a fast food worker who at least in my state makes $3+/hour more than I do. Nobody tips me when I deliver a car.

Up here in Canada, the largest grocery chain, Loblaws, has some sort of children's charity they run and from time to time the cashiers will be forced to ask customers if they want to donate to it when it comes time to pay. If you use their self-checkout it always asks that question if your payment amount is more than some minimum. It annoys the hell out of me. I have no idea if their charity even supports any local children's causes, and like was said, I donate plenty on my own. Loblaws can well afford to give whatever amount they want.

Yeah. I get it with the coin shortage (how did that happen?), but I was using a credit card. No coins involved.
It's just a bad idea, but most people won't even notice, or think to care, I would bet.

Geez, @driver100 - I'm with CAA also, though I went through a local broker. Your experience makes me question the value, though like you, the rates were by far the lowest. And I could never get through to TD (my former company) last year either.
I think most will be the same. When they see one does it and it seems to work for them the others do the same, if it saves them money.
Any phone wait beyond 15 minutes is unacceptable. The last entity to do that to me, for nearly an hour, is the agency processing my parking ticket in the forest. I think they do it on purpose so you just end up paying the fine.

Yesterday I called our car insurer, CAA which is like AAA but in Canada, to put a vacation stop on my car insurance for 5 months while in Florida. I was on hold for an hour and a quarter. It reminded me of when we had the big accident and I called our insurance company from the accident and I was on hold.....I wanted them to arrange a tow truck etc. The cops wanted to go home, so they said if they don't send a truck within 5 minutes we'll call one. I still didn't get through so the cops got me a tow truck. Just as the guy wanted me to sign all these papers for storage the rep from the insurance company came on, she said don't sign anything. They can take the car to their compound overnight, and then we will pick it up. I think the tow truck guys were charging excessive rates, and in talking to the tow truck driver he seemed to be untrustworthy to put it nicely! The rep came on just before I signed the papers...she said don't sign anything.
After waiting for an hour and a quarter yesterday I told them what I wanted to do, and the agent said I had to call back closer to the day....within 2 weeks of going. An hour and a quarter of my life wasted!
Why would you insure with a company that did that to you? For what it’s worth AAA down here has been something of a disappointment lately as well.
Triple AAA has been a disappointment ever since they sided with the greedy lowlifes in their Insurance division instead of the motorists they claimed to represent when endorsing the use of red light scameras in the USA.

All kidding aside, I tip based on the performance of the server. I start at 15% and can go as high as 25%. I use the entire bill when I tip (I don’t subtract sales tax) so I am actually tipping 20% anyway based on poster’s tipping methods since our sales tax is 7% here in Broward County.

Speaking of tipping, we ordered take-out from one of our regular spots last night. I ordered online, selected curbside, added 15% tip and headed to the restaurant. When I got there and called in, I was told they were swamped, I had to come in. I asked if they still did curbside and was told yeah, but not tonight, he'd meet me at the door. Ok, no way to win that battle so I headed to the door. A guy came out, "Dave?" "Yes", handed me the bags and headed back in, nothing else said. In an attempt to not have a come apart right there, I went back to my car and called in just to express a tad of frustration I apparently got the guy who brought out my food who said, "maybe if you tipped better, you'd get better service..."

Tipping for pick-up is going a little over board but I do it. Pick-up requires almost no service other than putting the food in a bag. It’s not like being seated and waited on.

When I called from the car and asked for a manager, the guy said he was a manager. So I emailed the place when I got home relaying my experience and how I felt this manager was in no way helping their business. Within 20 minutes, I had received a reply, a very gracious apology, and that guy was merely "standing in" for the manager who had gone across the street for food, LOL! She asked that we come back, said they'd put a $25 card with our name on it in the office for a future visit and would have a chat with the employee. I wrote back and said the gift card was not necessary but appreciated, thanked her for getting back to me so quickly and handling the situation in the manner that she did. Jury's still out on how soon we'll go back...
A bit confused here about the problem. You wanted curbside but they were super busy so they asked that you come in this one time. So, what's the issue here? That you tipped for a service you didn't receive? I don't really get the issue here. The food is good, you've gone there in the past and had no issues. This one time they let you know right away that tonight's a super busy night and you'd need to come in this one time. I'm guessing you feel taken because you tipped and didn't get the full service? I don't get it truthfully.

My question is if they brought his order to the door why couldn't they take the extra 15 seconds to walk to the curb? Is the curb a half block away?

It wasn't a huge problem really, more of crappy customer service for one of their regulars. I selected curbside as I had already "taken off my bra" for the day, so wasn't really dressed to go in. I would have tipped the same whether I went in or not, so no issue there. The guy brought the food to the door, I was parked about 6 more steps further so he wasted more time telling me how swamped they were instead of just bringing it out or asking one of the servers to do so. I guess being told to tip better for better service is where they got me.

When I was 14 years old, I was offered a job at the Candy Store (that’s what we called the store on the corner of my building that sold newspapers, cigarettes, sodas, ice cream and fountain service) as a fountain soda jerk. I was paid 50 cents an hour + all the ice cream I wanted and all the sodas I wanted.
After 3 weeks of packing ice cream into pint and 1/2 gallon containers and eating every flavor ice cream Breyer’s made, I couldn’t stand the sight of CocaCola or any ice cream.
The owner noticed I wasn’t eating ice cream or drinking sodas and asked me why? I told him I got nauseous at the sight of soda and ice cream. He said he knew that would happen and that’s why he offered unlimited sodas and ice cream as part of the “benefits package” for the job, and laughed out loud for at least a minute. I had been “snookered”! 🤪😜🤓

No spoilers, but it is already creating fault lines in the Bond fanbase. There are more than a few Easter eggs scattered through the movie as well. Also saw the trailer for Dune, which could conceivably be the next big science fiction franchise.

That’s why I stick to cash with most of my purchases. No chance to get the guilt treatment.
It’s funny that I would be expected to tip a fast food worker who at least in my state makes $3+/hour more than I do. Nobody tips me when I deliver a car.

Yeah, but it probably only has one side. Like the meat found on subs from cheap sub shops.

Yeah. I get it with the coin shortage (how did that happen?), but I was using a credit card. No coins involved.
It's just a bad idea, but most people won't even notice, or think to care, I would bet.

I wasn’t going to comment on that but it sounds ageist and sexist. And just for the record I identify as an old man but I’m still pretty cute….or so my wife tells me.

I spend my money on tips using unique, dynamic and complicated quadratic equations that are faultless! This way, I have money to buy new cars! 🤪😜🤓

This is why they print the actual tip numbers on the receipt.
15% X 1.07 = 16.05%, not 20%

Tipping for pick-up is going a little over board but I do it. Pick-up requires almost no service other than putting the food in a bag. It’s not like being seated and waited on.
I’d talk to the owner about that guy.

My question is if they brought his order to the door why couldn't they take the extra 15 seconds to walk to the curb? Is the curb a half block away?

That’s what I thought!

Good to see CalMatters published the "other side" of AB 43 yesterday. I was skeptical of independent non-profit journalism being anything more than a lobbying group, but this gives me great hope.
Well written article too. Dan Walters covers some of my same thoughts and counter-points, but is more focused in his delivery.
We closed up our summer cottage rentals on Lake Champlain and headed south for a couple of weeks. We drove 450 miles today to Pine Grove, PA (60 miles North of Harrisburg) and have about 450 more tomorrow to reach southern Virginia. Northern Vermont is far from everywhere!
We’ll hang there for a few days before hitting the South Carolina “upstate” region and then to the Asheville, NC area.

I’m a pretty generous tipper, I usually do 20% and round up. In rare circumstances I’ve tipped $50 on a $15 lunch. I rarely tip at fast food places though.
