Refresh my memory, how many points did the defense score?

Oh, you convinced me. Defense doesn’t even need to be part of the game.

Orrrrr… maybe we should credit them with the forced fumbles and recoveries and blocked kicks. Darn.

I’ll have to rethink my whole existence now. Darn you internet! Darn you straight to heck!

My point being is that unless you score points you will never win a game. Defense is instrumental to winning by keeping the other team from scoring but in and of itself will not win a game. That is the job for offense. If the offense doesn't score you won't win.

I started my new job today: Actually, this was just because we were collecting lease returns from a local sheriff’s department. We got to drive a bunch of them around all afternoon and play with the lights and sirens.

When I was in high school I was a lot boy at a Pontiac dealer and the local police got a couple of new payrol cars. We had our fun with them but while they had all the performance stuff on it they had no markings lights or sirens. The city put those on.

Did you try to stop and arrest someone? :D
No, I didn’t want any real cops putting the cuffs on me. Thing is, when I was driving on the interstate, no one would pass me. I was doing the speed limit and everyone fell in line behind me.

I am surprised they didn't strip the car of lights and sirens.

What do you think Treasury bonds are?

    Interest paid to me?
The government is paying interest, every day. Doesn't matter to who. They are borrowing money.

It never once occurred to me they are taking out car loans. It boggles the mind how all this crazy bookkeeping keeps chugging along.
Most high mileage commercial leases are designed to have a residual near zero. It's just a way to pay for the use of a depreciating asset over the time you are using it, than all upfront. The government entity borrows less money during that time, because they didn't have to pay all of that cash upfront. Tax revenue is collected over time, not in big lump sums, so they try to match expenses to revenue. Simple cash flow management.

It's a fallacy that there is no "interest" expense on items paid for in cash, upfront. You've replaced interest with opportunity cost. Especially in today's environment where you can earn 5%+ on cash.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

There are fumbles that are taken in for a score, interceptions too and even safeties

Yes, impressive kind of sums things up. When I spoke with HR, found out the new match for our 401K is now 4% so I up'd mine to that. Also found out that we can now open a Roth IRA through the company also, so did that also. Luckily I just happen to have both my IRA's with Fidelity also so it's a quick one stop place for me to see a part of my portfolio.

My bud who moved to Myrtle Beach a few years back called me yesterday afternoon to let me know it had hit the account already. I already figured it wold be any day now, so was happy to see it in the account. Just plan to let it all sit there until I reach 75 and have to start taking out the RMD's I figure. Or, I might just use a chunk of it now to buy that silver 2024 VW GTI I saw online yesterday. Looks great with the alloys and has the black plaid interior...quite the looker. And going this route, I know it'll definitely fit on my side of the garage as it only grew by 1.3"'s with the width being the same. Just love the GTI in this color!! The front seats are one piece with the headrests built in, something I'd need to get used to. It's an "S" model though I'd prefer an "SE" or an "SEL" to be honest just for the added audio system.

We've driven a bunch of old police units to the auction in Ft. Lauderdale in the last few months. They were basically stripped of all the "good stuff" and had high mileage. We take a lot of high mileage trucks down to the Lauderdale auction also, some with mileage over 180K. But like I said, every day is different. Today, I drove a nice MB mid-sized SUV, black over black, to a independent used car dealer in North Miami who buys a lot of iron from us. Couldn't get over how well it drove and was amazed at how going up the power band was so smooth with no feeling of gears changing...just pure acceleration. It was very cool & now get why folks really love these things. Haven't driven many MB's or BMW's but do remember how much I wanted to like the BMW 128I I almost bought back in 2013 but it was so "heavy" upfront due to the 6-cylinder engine under the hood. It really needed a turbo 4-cylinder & it would've been just about perfect & I probably would've bought it! When I went to test drive it, it was sitting in the showroom with a dead battery...a dead battery! I was so pissed off & they said I'd have to come back in a couple of days to test drive it. When I did finally get to drive it, the heaviness of the front end turned me off and no way would I have bought it which was unfortunate. If it had a 4-cylinder turbo under the hood, definitely would've brought it home as I really wanted a newer vehicle at that time. I had gone back to work earlier that year and really wanted to treat myself.

Leasing police cars also makes sense because there is no down payment, there is a defined monthly payout....and it is tax deductible. And, no need to worry about selling off or trading in old cars. It is easier....in some situations.

I think that a strong defensive team would beat a weak or maybe even mediocre offensive team.
Especially if the strong defensive team can make the offense guys fumble, or get interceptions....ha ha.

You know that there are such thing as defensive scores, don’t you? Touchdown after interceptios, safety. You absolutely can win a game by not scoring with your offense (or scoring very little), just shutting out the opponent’s offense and scoring during their drives. Not easy, but possible.

Government entities don't have to worry about tax deductibility. They don't pay taxes.

We went to Maryland for the week.

Traveling the turnpike and interstates is always interesting. Most people are reasonable. Then there are always the usual suspects camping in the left lane, etc. Various Hondas driving way too slow or way too fast. The overall fastest this trip was Hyundai and Kia.

This trip I noticed an alarming number of people who, when passing a tractor trailer, slow down and pace the truck for a while; the most dangerous place to be.

did my accounting imitation for the year again today. Got the taxes done. took longer than planned, but half of that was dealing with technology issues (getting the software to find the backup file from last year, and convincing the laptop and printer to actually print.) lots of extra 1099R forms to enter this year because I did a bunch of rollovers for the dead 401K plans. Thankfully was not massively in the red like last year (combined between states and federal came out about $5,500 more in my favor. Last year was brutal).

I still don't know why I have to enter in all the stuff the IRS already knows.

today's other project is finally decommissioning my old computers. Dug out my old laptop to see if I could pull the backup off that if needed, and what a nightmare trying to get that dog back to life. So will double check that it is fully backed up (should be) and will reset to factory and yank the hard drive and dispose of that.

also dug the old Dell desktop monster and am attempting to get that back to life. Same deal. I think it is backed up (and a few years ago it melted down and I had to reset to factory specs and lost most of what was on it). Told the wife not to put anything new on it, but of course she did not listen so there is a chance that has some pictures on it that aren't in the cloud storage, but at this point, doubt she would even know! Can't wait to get that dropped off at Best Buy to get recycled. I hope they still do that for free.

I just did mine yesterday. With the new deductions rules, I don’t really even see options for bending the rules. Not like the old days where you could make up some charitable donations. Unless you are willing to put down $25k in undocumented ones, which I guess if you are brave would work. Otherwise the IRS already has everything to compare to.

You got it. You can’t be timid when you do your taxes. My philosophy is, “go big or go home”.

IIRC, I think it was around 1986 when the IRS made you get Social Security numbers for your kids if you wanted to claim them as dependents on your 1040 form. That resulted in a decline of 7 or 8 million kids being claimed on 1040 forms.

If the IRS is going to get creative and play dirty pool like that we the citizens have to do the same.

Because the IRS doesn't know if you have self employment income and if so how much and all the associated deductions, The IRS doesn't know if you can itemize your deductions and if so how much. Have your dependents changed? Among other things.

Sure with many taxpayers, those whose only income is reported on tax forms such as 1040's and 1099's the IRS could figure out the taxes but they would have to send you the results and have you confirm or correct it.

We call that an announcerism. Can always count on those brilliant folks to says things like “if they want to win, they’ll have to outscore the other team” or “if he can score here, they’ll have the lead.”

    Did you ever notice when someone says;
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.”*
It's never the winner that says that, only the loser?

Well if it's not whether you win or lose then why do they keep score?
    ————————————————-
Try explaining that to the parents who believe in the, “Everyone Gets a Trophy” crowd.

Here’s my story on that . I’m not sure if I ever told this before:

When Son #1 reached Little League age I was asked to co-manage the team he’d play on. They were horrible the first year but believe it or not they won the championship the second year. Fast forward a couple years when our borough decided to start a soccer league for kids my 2 son’s ages. So, they asked me and a lot of other fathers who coached Little League teams to coach the soccer teams. I told the guy heading the new soccer league that I didn’t know anything about soccer. He told me that I knew how to coach kids and they’d teach me and the other fathers about soccer. They then set times and the place where the fathers would be taught about soccer. There had to be at least 6 European guys there the first night to kick off the teaching session.

The very first guy that got up to tell us about the new league told us the league will be for the kids to have fun and learn a new sport but they weren’t going to keep score because they thought Americans put too much importance on young kids winning rather that just having fun playing sports. He then asked if any of us coaches had any questions before he started into the teaching session. I got up and said, “if that’s going to be the way this league is run, I’m not interested in coaching in a league like that”. I went on to say, “ the first thing kids want to know is, what’s the score”. The guy then asked if any of the other coaches felt the same and every single one of them said the same thing. The league was about to fail before it got off the ground. Rather than let that happen they decided to do it the American way and keep score.

The best part of this is when I had the first practice for the kids and several parents came over to me and said, “I hope you can get the kids good enough to win”. I said to them, “so you like the idea about winning and losing”? They had a dumbfounded look on their faces and said, “what are you talking about”? I told them the story and they all said they wouldn’t want their kids playing in a league like that.

We didn’t do very well the first year but we did a lot of winning the next year and the kids had more fun that year.

Here's the staple from hell. I guess it's only an inch long. There are about a million of them. :) I'm about a third of the way pulling them out.

I’ve never had to remove padding staples that were that long. The ones I’ve pulled out have been 5/8 of an inch or less and there wasn’t an inordinate number of them, Like I said before, you should sue the crew that did that. :#

did my accounting imitation for the year again today.

What ever happened to that IRS rule about reporting all transactions over $600? I was retired from my business by the time they concocted that big brother idea but since I was a cash only operation and never used any cash transfer apps I wondered why they even bothered.

That’s right up there with the question asking if you had any online or out of state purchases that you did. It pay sales tax on so you should list them out and do it with your filing.

My "guy" who does some property maintenance for me mentioned the other day that the Canadian equivalent of the IRS is on his case. He is all cash with me which isn't a big problem since he seldom does anything here that costs over $100 a pop. But he mentioned that they are chasing him because last year he did a $15,000 roofing job for someone and got paid by cheque. Of course he didn't declare that. They must have an open investigation on him and saw that pop up. I don't know any of his details but I would not be surprised if he pays no income tax at all most years, maybe even being a recipient of govt assistance. I remember a few years ago he injured himself pretty badly with a fall off a roof and was unable to work for a year or more, and undoubtedly was on workers comp or some other govt program during that time.

You better bring a backhoe. The reason it’s still there is because I don’t want it to be dug up too easily. I’m taking most of it with me.

I was cash-only because I wanted my bookkeeping simple and other forms of payment required extra expense. I declared all my income and paid all my taxes even in years when my income was below poverty level and my total tax payments exceeded 60% of that income.

I should have asked jmonroe to do my taxes back then.

For some reason our little dog Daisy hated tape measurers. If anyone pulled one out, she would be on it like a guinea on a cut worm. Daisy has been in dog heaven about a year and a half now, but of course I think of her when the issue of tap measurers comes up.

Mahomes reminds me of Jason Kidd in the NBA. A true winner that doesn't care about stats, just winning. In 2011 Dallas/Kidd beat the Lebron led Miami Heat in the Finals, easily one of the best Finals ever in the NBA. That was the first year of 6 straight rings that Miami had deluded themselves into thinking they'd win; only the first ring went to Dallas.

I saw a program where they caught a pizza shop that didn't declare how many pizzas they were really selling.
They'd get the cash, and they didn't ring it into the cash register.
    How did they catch them?
They figured out how many boxes they ordered over the year, and the numbers didn't add up.
    Be careful JMonroe :p
