went tile looking today. stopped at a local tile shop, which started out poorly (selection overload). Surprisingly, the nice lady that runs the place came up with some options, and actually something we liked. Even more surprising, it was the style (big tiles in the shower) I was pushing for. The price though, was pretty steep (the master bath alone was blowing past the tile allowance). Then we discovered why the builder told us to just go to Lowes or HD and pick out stuff. A whole lot cheaper. Not quite the selection, and didn't find a shower floor tile we liked (did find a wall tile). So now she will be grumpy because the "fancy" stuff isn't really in budget.

JMonroe, is there any reason to avoid the big box stores for porcelain tiles? Big difference in price, but is there a quality or durability reason?

Picking your paint colors and tiles is like selecting a location with a good view. No matter how spectacular it is when you start, it very shortly fades into the background and you don’t notice the difference one way or another.

It’s been a long time since I tiled anything but unless you’re dropping bowling balls on it I don’t think there’s much difference in durability. There might be small differences in quality but you’d have to be awfully picky to see them.

    @jmonroe1,
I'm pretty sure the wall tile was within our allowance. Bring over a piece of what you have if you want to compare. ;)
The grandkids have taken over one of the bathrooms.

Can you send your grandkids over to my house? They keep their bathroom neater than mine.🥲

We had Safelite come and use that gel to fix a couple of minor cracks and we could never tell where it was after like a week, the mark just disappeared! We both didn't want to replace as the cracks were so small so they told us to do the gel first, and if we wren't satisfied, they'd come back to do the full replacement. Both times, like it never even happened!

So far, both the oldest & youngest have decided not to have kids. I get it because it is a life long commitment and not for the faint of heart. I know the oldest & her hubby have put a lot of thought into their decision, so we stay out of it. With the youngest, just not sure if it's more he then her to be honest, as we haven't spent that much time with either of them since the wedding in 2017. They'll be down in Florida in a couple of weeks, so will get a better sense of who wants what when we start talking. Since we live about 10 miles inland, the kids rented an Airbnb for the four days they'll be down, in Lighthouse Point I think.

But, as parents, we don't intrude on anything, unlike my mother. Have found to just listen is the best way to go. Now, if our opinion is asked, we'll give it but generally, we keep our mouthes shut. It's their life, not ours, so they must live it the way they want. Only time will tell if they all regret not having rug rats. I know that we both wanted kids and am very happy we had them. The joy they give us is so infinite and I look forward to every call and visit now. But, best to keep one's opinions to themselves unless asked!

If a windshield needs to be replaced I go back to the dealer. When I worked at BMW we'd sometimes get cars with windshields replaced elsewhere that had all sorts of issues related to the R&R. I know that some indie shops are okay, but I'm not going to risk it.

thought we had it today after a trip to a different flooring store. actually picked out options for all 3 bathrooms. Only open item was which one of a couple mosaic floor options to pick for the shower. Lasted until we got home and put on an HGTV show, where they used the exact same Mosaic we were leaning toward (also cheapest so I was pulling for that one!) Looked great in the shower the show did. Only problem was, they did darker subway wall tiles and the wife decided she wanted one of them (prompting another lecture about minimizing grout in the shower!) So we may be going back to revisit the wall tile choice (which I agreed to as long as we started with the floor I want)

eventually she will have to pick something so the builder can finish. And I am looking forward to spending the next 20 years hearing daily about how she should have picked something else.

Went through our insurance company as I recall. We hade Safeco at the time but have since changed company's since their quote for the 2024 year was ridiculous! Did like getting and paying for one year instead of 6 months but their quote was too out there. Went with another company and getting the exact same coverage for a big savings. Only bad thing is that it's only a 6 month rate. But Safeco's quote was just so ridiculous, we had to shop elsewhere.

When I bought my post-divorce swinging bachelor pad (read: alone nightly, watching tv), the walls were in mostly questionable taste colors obviously painted by the amateur former renters (which I think helped in my low bid purchase price! That, and the cat-stained carpets). I said no problem, I've got time, I'll repaint (and I hate painting with the burning passion of a white-hot sun). I bought the requisite tools, went to local, lovely paint/interior decorating store to choose the appropriate paint palate for Versailles, Jr..

As I stood paralyzed, staring at the wall of a thousand color chips, a kindly lady came by, put a gentle hand on my shoulder and said simply, "choose a shade of white and use it everywhere. Then add color through furniture, wall hangings and plants." She walked away as silently as she arrived, I exhaled, wiped the tears from my eyes, exited for home and did absolutely nothing. The mottled burnt orange and blood red shades of mi casa really grew on me over the next four years.

Until it became time to sell; the horrified look on the realtor's face at the no doubt unsellable pad as it was becoming a reality. I hired an excellent, and eminently reasonable paint company, donated all the unopened and unused supplies I had purchased and went on to live an unremarkable, but satisfying life after selling at a reasonable profit.

Our new home on the hill is greige, I whole-heartedly approved of this choice. That she made. Fool me once...

In our last house, every room was a different color. I changed one of the kid's bedrooms from having one wall of bright yellow and the other 3 electric blueberry to a pastel green. The other rooms I repainted, I used the same colors due to having left over paint.

I’m sure its boring for some, but our house is the same color, carpets/flooring in every space

The shore house has the same tile in both bathrooms and laundry room. All but one bedroom is the same flooring and paint color.

We like things to not be too different from room to room

We're the same way for the most part - all our trim is the same color now and all the walls are the same color. We have one accent wall in the living room now and then my son's room is still the same colors as when we moved in and decorated it. We'll let him pick colors to paint his room when he's a bit older.

I think we are down to 2-3 finalist color choices. One light gray, one light tan. Wife is still infatuated with a brighter yellow but I think I moved her off of that.

If it’s the gray vs beige, she can make the call on it. I just don’t want it being too dark and neither choice is.

I agree that decorations and accessories is where the color should come from.

The master bath, that seems to be moving toward her dream blues. Whatever. As long as it stays in budget will be fine!

@andres3, good to hear your wife is OK. That’s the most important part. From what I’ve heard about accidents there are always he-said she-said situations that have to be resolved. I know you don’t like insurance companies but this is where your insurance company is your friend. Right or wrong they’ll do their best to support their policy holder not the other guy. That person’s insurance company will fight for them.

Unfortunately, sometimes it’s a split decision but you can’t do it on your own unless you have deep pockets and have several unbiased witnesses who are willing to support you. I’ve been told that it’s not uncommon for witnesses to decide not to get involved at the last minute, so you have to be prepared for that. Maybe this is where dash cams help but I’ve heard they can lead to split decisions too.

    Good luck.

    jmonroe

No doubt even video can leave room for interpretation, but part of the problem is those so called "insurance arbitrators" like favoring the house with those "split" decisions. U-turns are a form of "left turn" and left turns are almost like rear-enders, the person making the dangerous left turn has the greater duty of care in almost any situation.

I get the insurance is supposed to fight for their insured, but believing a cockamamie malarkey bigly pile of manure story is another thing.
I got hit many years ago making a left turn. The cop ticket the other driver and my insurance was insistent that the other driver was 100% at fault.
Hence the qualifier "almost any situation."

Why not get the sample size and paint a square on the wall. Better yet, paint a corner so you can see its color with reflected color from the other wall. Let it dry and change color like most do as they dry.

Not happening. Other than the bathroom I said I would do.

I swung by the Benjamin Moore store and got an accessible beige sample. Nice color but much darker than I expected. But also got a sherwin Williams sample my wife read about (Swiss coffee) and that was really nice. Might be the winner. I need to tell her if we can agree on one or 2 max I’ll get a sample and paint a panel for her.

Sorry to break up the discussion about decorating, but.......

Yesterday I came out of our community and I was going to go left. The road was clear on the right, so I checked left....the speed limit is 35 mph but everyone goes 40 or 45. I can only see so far because of the bend in the road, I got out and across the road fine, but a guy in a red Camaro came around the bend going at least 60 mph.....I wasn't in his way but he had to lean on his horn to show he had the right of way I suppose. I guess he thinks that if he is going twice as fast as the speed limit he still has the right of way and I should be able to see around the bend in the road.
btw, it was an ugly red newer type Camaro.

Prefer a Challenger over a Camaro or Mustang at work because their windows are a bit bigger. Got to drive a Challenger on Monday and was happy to have the larger windows. It's Spring Break right now and there is an increase in traffic and people just doing stupid things. Again tonight, we were bumper to bumper around 45th Street on I-95 and our trip back from Vero Beach to Coconut Creek took almost 2 hours. Clocked out at 7:05 and it was dark for a good 35 minutes already.

Insert reminder here that most people are really bad at estimating an object’s speed just by eyeballing it. It nearly always seems faster than it is.

    Truth.

I was checking speed on non-interstate highways for a while using radar. When I first started doing it, almost every vehicle was going slower than I thought. After a while I got pretty good at judging speed.

Now the ones who were really moving, way over the speed limit, you could tell right away.

The intersection right by my house is quite similar to the one Driver described except the speed limit is 25. They have done about as much as can be done to slow down traffic. Everything from putting up displays showing the speed, to having police cars chasing people all day handing out tickets. I have noticed that the overall speed seems to have decreased. Hopefully it satisfies those in control before stop signs start appearing or, heaven forbid, speed bumps.

A few times I have looked, started out, and someone is suddenly right at me. So far I have been able to get out of the way. These people are not doing 25, or even 35.

My wife, who is anything but a speed demon, even mentioned recently, that 25 mph seemed too slow and 35 may be more appropriate.

When i take my walk down my road which is a 30 speed limit you can tell that no one is obeying that speed. Combine that with a blind curve one door down and it makes for some interesting exits in the car.
