Thanks guys.  There are 5 of us at dinner every night, 6 on Monday nights when my wife's Mom comes to watch the kids & Thursday nights when my Mom watches the kids.

It used to be a kitchen & a dining room.  About 4 years ago, we were visiting my wife's cousin in Charlotte who has a knack for decorating.  We were talking about ripping up the floor, replacing the cabinets, & counter tops.  Now our house isn't that big.  It is a 1432 square foot ranch.  She suggested we knock down the wall inbetween the kitchen & dining room because our dining room is a big portion of the house to only be used a handful of times every year.  We saved up for a few years and are thrilled with the results.

When we remodeled our kitchen we knocked out the wall between the kitchen and family room and added a breakfast bar. Like your remodel, not cheap but worth every penny.

    After:

I am so jealous of your remodel. Unfortunately, I did not have such a positive outcome with my townhouse remodel. I thought using my wife, who is recently retired, as my general contractor -- big mistake. First off on the first floor she replaced the carpeting with wood. Good idea, except the quality of the work is substandard. Ditto with the kitchen.

Apparently, the dictum, measure twice and cut once was not followed. The granite counter top is off by an eighth to a quarter of an inch and the contractor used silicone to fill in the gap. Believing that my wife was on top of the job and should have noticed the mistake, that was not the case. Bummer.

The townhouse is supposed to be our retirement home when we downsize in a few years but I am so upset with the shoddy job that I am thinking of selling. On the other hand, we will continue to rent it (at a much lower price) and do a professional remodel when we are ready to transition five years down the road.

Thanks for your prayers, Ty, and the same thanks to all of you out there who have kept me on your prayer list.

I am scheduled for an ultrasound of my left leg in 10 days and then a week later a PEP Scan of my entire body.  That should rule out or rule in any abnormal growths or tumors elsewhere in my body.  I sure will be relieved when the results are in for those tests.

Still have to find out what the doc's want to do about the tumor in my liver - it's pretty big and is affecting my liver functions.

Kosher pastrami and kosher corned beef come from the same cuts of meat - brisket.  But I will only eat those meats if they are cut from the first cut (flat brisket).  I will eat them only if they are lean and the second and third cuts of brisket are very fatty and grizzly.

My very favorite BBQ brisket was eaten in San Antonio on the River Walk.  I couldn't get enough of it.  I have a friend in Dallas who gets his BBQ brisket at a smokehouse right off I-35E which is also primo.

What do the Reuben sandwich purists insist on: Thousand Island or Russian dressings?

    'snake',

Yeah, I can't get over people who put ketchup on a hot dog. Sorry to say, Mrs. j is one of those to this day but both of my sons out grew it.

Years ago I saw a show on the cooking channel about famous hot dog shops in the USA and even the Burgh had one. A place called the "O". The Original Hotdog Shop in the Oakland section of the Burgh not too far from Pitt.

Of course Chicago had one but I can't remember the name of the place but maybe you do. The thing about this place that I will NEVER forget is that when they talked to the owners (an older couple well into their 70's if not more) they said they will NOT serve ketchup on their dogs because a hot dog was not intended to be served like that. But, because some of their customers want ketchup, they serve to them with a packet of ketchup because as they said, "we will not ruin them ourselves".

I DVR'd that show just to show it to people who want to put ketchup on their dogs when we have cookouts like what we are going to do this Memorial Day weekend. I too didn't want those folks to ruin a good dog and wanted to only have ketchup packs on the condiment tray for them but Mrs. j said I was carrying it too far and did not want to go along with it. Every cookout I still try but no success, so far.

How much do you want to bet that when I try again this weekend, I'll lose the argument again. :'(

The way some of you guys feel about ketchup is how I feel about onions, especially raw red onions. Ruin anything they touch. If I were king they would be outlawed in restaurants, or at least required to be upon request only.

We were pretty happy with our contractor; we'd do some things differently, but nothing major. The big issue was not having a kitchen for 90 days; it was a big relief to have it finished.

WHOA let's not get carried away. I like ketchup with my fries and every now and then on a hamburger just to be different. Get this, DIL #1 likes it on steak. Even Mrs. j kids her about that. When Son #1 first saw her do that he said, "I guess your mother wasn't a very good cook". Believe it or not, that did not kill their dating. Just for the record she was a good cook, just let her daughter go and thought she would grow out of it but she didn't. Her argument is, "people use steak sauce so what is so different"? Son #1 tells her "a good steak doesn't need anything but some spices". Afraid that this will rub off on his sons he tells them not to eat steak like their mother, "eat it like a man". :@

FWIW, I would not like to see the ketchup industry go away because the Burgh is the home of the leading ketchup producer, H. J. Heinz, and more layoffs ain't good although I think a lot, if not all, of their ketchup is now made in Ohio.

We are, sort of. If you took the first Boeing 707, built in 1958, and landed that same plane today at a modern airport, few people, if any, would notice. You could not say the same about a 60 year old car.
Passengers may not notice...although the seats are probably thinner and narrower. Planes don't get as dated as quickly as cars do, but they do get dated. Bet they didn't have movie screens on the backs of the seats. Also, planes are kept in service for a longer period of time, many fleets have planes that are 20 or more years old.

But, I was using the Wright Brothers as an example because flight was brought up. When we are talking solar panels we are talking technology. And, the solar panels that are being used today could be obsolete in 10 years, or even 5 years.

This example of Kodak is really a better comparison:

In its hey-day Eastman Kodak was huge: it employed 140,000 workers at its height, and in 1996 it was ranked the fourth most valuable brand in the United States, behind Disney, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s.

When you bought film for your camera (or a disposable camera), Kodak film was virtually your only option. You could buy the cheaper Fujifilm, but Kodak was winning the marketing game, capturing 90% of the film market.

But in 2012 Kodak filed for bankruptcy.

The digital camera destroyed Kodak, and some company could come up with something better than solar panels. Besides, if we all used solar panels the government will find it hard to tax their use, so they will just charge more for other things. Might be pessimistic, but, in Ontario Canada the population cut back on energy use (electricity), the gov't didn't collect enough tax revenue, instead of prices dropping they had to increase costs. Tax revenue can't be created from nothing....has to come from somewhere....call me a pessimist, but, I am dubious of save money schemes, including electric cars.

Buick Verano to be dropped, even though it was selling well:

Blame the rise in demand for SUVs
After weeks of speculation, General Motors has confirmed it is ending production of the Buick Verano, a compact sedan made at the Orion assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan.

The Buick Verano, which was introduced in late 2011, will be phased out in North America in October following a short production run of the 2017 model year.

Changing consumer tastes and growing demand for SUVs in North America drove GM’s decision.

Wasn't the Verano built around "old" tech too?

General lifespan for solar panels from my reading is ~20 years. Some are warranted for 25. They get less efficient over time but unless something breaks, they don't really wear out. Since the typical payback period is 10 to 20 years (13 for my situation), you could justify replacing the panels after 20 years, assuming you're one of the few people who live in a house that long. My longest has been 15 years.

Could I compare solar panels to flat screen TVs? We bought our first one in 2004, a 20 inch for $1000. 12 years later I can buy a 55 inch TV that has a lot more features and better picture including HD for a lot less than that. And the 20 inch one still works fine too, but would I buy it today?

Now let me do a little guessing. I'll bet this shop is a landmark of sorts in the Chicago area.

IIRC, Chicago folks love their "red hots"!  They serve them at Wrigley Field.  Love those red hots.  Enjoyed many of those at Cubs games with relish and hot mustard.  I'm already salivating.  B)

If you can make it to the Burgh this weekend you can join in at our cookout.

We will be serving ribs, hamburgers, fruit salad etc. and kosher wieners. Mrs. j will be serving her locally famous potato salad too. That is almost as good as a good kosher dog, almost. ;)

    @stickguy
i thought my wife was the only person to hate ketchup.  I love the stuff, but lately we don't eat much food that it is good on (wife and I have been dieting and have lost 100 lbs each. Her since October after the baby and me since January).

I will put it on a cheap hot dog.  If I'm eating a Nathan's or Sabrett I go plain.

The best kosher hot dogs are Hebrew Nationals.  Hot dogs are the only meat I require be kosher because of fat limitations as well as the cuts of beef that are used

I've been on the phone talking with my son's SO.  She is at a Honda dealer in the desert trying to buy a Honda Pilot.  I have been dealing with the sales manager who wants $500 over invoice.  I offered $750 under invoice because of available factory trunk money.  Wish me luck!  I have never negotiated a car deal 2700 miles away.

Now I think you WILL be coming. Hebrew Nationals are what we are serving and they are the only dogs that have been in our house for a long time. We always have a few in the house at all times. We get them at Sam's because they are by far the cheapest there. I'm not so sure I could afford them at the local food rip off store around us. :'(

OK, I'm wishing you luck but the feet that do the walking are still in CA.

I buy my Hebrew Nationals at Walmart.  As for the feet doing the walking, you are dead on!
