In 33 years of ownership the only time I've had a BMW spare tire on the ground is when I dropped the space saver on my ti so that I could access the fill plug on the rear differential.

I have. Last time was on the Tuesday before thanksgiving, at night, below freezing, on I81 in podunkville PA. Sidewall got shredded. At least with donut, was able to get to a hotel, and in the morning, into a nearby town (skeevy place) to a tire store. Without a spare, it would not have been a good night.
I would have made it home too if not so far away.
Hey, I have never died, but I still have life insurance!
The last time I used a spare was in 2002 when my new(to me) Jeep had the RF tire go soft- and If I had been paying attention I wouldn't have needed to use the spare. Prior to that I can't think of a time that I used one.

"handling. Heck most drivers are probably at least 30 pounds overweight! And silly to worry about getting an extra .01 MPG in a mustang V8!"
Speak for yourself fatty.....
I was going to say that I haven't had a flat since the 80s but the princess, my niece borrowed my Lincoln last year and returned it with a curbed wheel and sidewall slash. I didn't feel like changing a tire in the slush so I pumped it up and bought a can of fix-a-flat and drove home. Didn't need the fix-a-flat, made it home and bought a new tire the next day.
I have to concede your point on gas milage.

I had a slow leak tire 3 weeks ago....puncture near the sidewall so had to be replaced.
My fear with RFTs is I am on a trip, I get a flat tire on a major holiday in the middle of nowhere. Have to stay in a flee bag motel until they can UPS a tire to the town garage....and will he have the equipment to install it?
I want my life to be as simple as possible.....a full spare is best, donut second choice.
Sales tax is an interesting phenomenon. I knew going in that I would have to pay the 8.25% if I purchased from a dealer, whereas no sales tax if purchased from an individual. It was still a good deal, and I went with it. This is not really a consideration with an automobile, as you have to register it to drive it, and when you register, you pay sales tax.
Many years ago we used to lie outrageously about the amount we paid for a used car to avoid most of the tax, but we can't get away with that anymore. The state of Texas uses lookup tables to insure that you pay your fair share of taxes. It's called Standard Presumptive Value.
A lot of my shopping for various items is based on bottom line pricing, and I find myself buying more and more things from Amazon using the Prime 2 day shipping and no sales tax. I do realize this is unfair to local businesses, but I'm looking out for my best interests, not theirs.

Regarding Amazon Prime, more and more states are starting to lean on Amazon to charge sales tax, as they have a "presence" in that state. Starting to happen here in CO. But, it doesn't slow us down from using them for many items.

How come you get away with no sales tax with Amazon? I sure get charged tax on my Amazon purchases up here in the Dallas area. I'm not a Prime member, but surely that can't have any impact. Curious.
Well, in jersey, it is based on having a physical location presence opinion the state ( basically a store). If not, they don't have to collect tax. However, on your income tax, you are supposed to report all purchases like this and pay your sales tax that way. Needless to say, not many people do.
I know of someone who bought a brand new RV. Drove to Florida, had an engine breakdown in a god forsaken tiny town in Georgia, had to stay for 3 days while parts were shipped.

Same in Florida. Amazon got grants to build giant warehouses in Florida, but part of the deal was that they would have to charge and collect sales tax. Losing sales tax money is a huge hit for any state government.

Here in CO, we have a variety of sales tax - state, county and city. Total is 8% where I live.
It was my understanding that what you describe for NJ is true in any state - if there is a physical presence, then sales tax must be collected, even with on-line purchases.
Which is why I've started to look at Fry's (CA electronics chain) for some of my technology purchases. They also offer free shipping.

Well, good news is that the construction in Dayton southbound seems to be wrapping up. Three lanes at least, concrete, smooth, all the way through. I thought of you and your trip the last time I drove through. I hope they'll have northbound opened up by your return in March? It's still 2 lanes but has been shifted to new travel portion of concrete. I think they hurried up on the SB side knowing the travelers to Florida for the winter will need a safer road that won't blow out their tires from errant potholes.
Doesn't Mercedes offer roadside service 24-hours a day with your Mercedes. We have 1 MB store in Dayton if you have a flat here.

The funny part is, if you buy directly from Amazon, you pay tax in FL, but if it is "Amazon Marketplace" from an out-of-state vendor, then you don't. Sometimes it's worth checking two or three vendors for the same product (Amazon will estimate tax for each) and see, which one requires sales tax, which one does not.
BTW, I believe by law we owes sales taxes for items purchased out of state and delivered to our home (or so claims the State Treasurer). The customers don't pay it just because it's unenforceable (state has no way of compelling and out-of-state entity to collect it on its behalf), not because we don't owe it.
The only time they can enforce it is when the item needs to be registered - then they make it a condition of a registration. In other instances, customers could technically deliver the sales tax to the state and county themselves, which of course we all do, just the way Warren Buffet does, when he says he should pay more income tax . I wonder if they even have an account and forms set up for such self-reporting...

Those shifting lanes cause anxiety attacks.....it is especially hard for large trucks to stay in their lane with the twisting.
Mercedes does have roadside assistance, and so does bmw while under warranty. Mercedes has a donut spare which is ok by me, BMW has RFTs, so they could arrange towing, but, I doubt if they will pay for your motel room if you are caught in a small town where you may have to order a tire. Which reminds me, another big negative for RFTs, they try to sell you insurance which is expensive, and a separate policy for the wheels which the dealer says can get damaged if there is a blowout - of course you don't find this out until after you have signed the papers that you own the car
Even 8% sales tax seems like a bargain to me. In Canada we have 8% provincial tax, equivalent to your state tax, but we also have 7% federal tax (called GST). These were charged separately but now are added together - 15% sales tax! I expect the day will come when Americans will also pay a federal tax....it is easy pickins for a government that will need more revenue one day.

There has been discussion of a Value Added Tax in the US for a number of years. There are advantages and disadvantages to it.
If it is instituted in addition to the local sales tax (if any - there are a few states that don't have it - Oregon and Alaska are two that come to mind), there might be some pushback.
I just read an article where India, after many years of dickering, have passed federal laws simplifying the tax codes for all the states. The previous method almost looked like extortion.
Brick & mortar stores have one advantage over Amazon; you can walk into a store and buy what you want today. In an attempt to minimize that advantage, Amazon has Prime with free overnight and two-day delivery. To achieve quicker delivery Amazon has built more and more warehouses around the country. Every time Amazon physically moves into a state, they must charge a sales tax on any purchase from that state.
In the good old days, mail order businesses would locate in a sparsely populated no or low sales tax state e.g. Wyoming or Montana.
My #1 tax gripe:
Sales tax in New York is 8.75% (depending on the county). When you buy an item with a rebate, there is no tax rebate on the rebate amount. Thus an auto with a four or five thousand dollar rebate costs an extra $350 - $437 in tax.
The math works Cost times Tax, then minus Rebate.
Not (Cost minus Rebate) times Tax.
Do the Canadian providences do the same with the super high VAT tax?

Boy, what a rip on knowledgeable Edmunds posters who can grind out a bargain. If you get it cheap you have to have a licenced appraiser sign off on the value or pay some inflated value the state "thinks" it's worth.

The same thing is done here in Nova Scotia by our DMV. I do understand it though, as it was a provincial pastime to lowball the tax with a bogus sales receipt on private auto sales years ago.

Aiken is about 12 miles IIRC from the GA border. Once you cross the border, which is the Savannah River, you are in August GA, home of the famous Masters golf tournament. I never went there but I was offered a free ticket on the final Sunday in '92. I told my fellow employee friend that he should give it to someone who golfs because they would appreciate it a lot more than me. As you can imagine he didn't have any trouble getting rid if that ticket and the guy he ended up giving it to (also a fellow employee) said he owed me a dinner and that I did accept. He took me to the Green Jacket Restaurant which is right across the road (pretty sure that is Washington Road) from the Augusta National Golf Club. That place is no longer there but at least I can say that I ate there once. It was a nice restaurant but I don't think it was as good as all the hype it got.

An insignificant amount in terms of mpg or handling. Heck most drivers are probably at least 30 pounds overweight! And silly to worry about getting an extra .01 MPG in a mustang V8!
For you, me and the everyday driver but not to Ford. If ford can get an additional .01 here and .01 there enough times and soon your 25 MPG V8 Mustang is a 26 MPG V8 Mustang. Do that with their entire line up and it save Ford a lot of money.

Here is the thing, Warren Buffet has relatively little "income". He however has lots of "capital gains" which is treated differently. So when people like Warren Buffet talk about paying more "income tax" it's just a bunch of hot air, call me when Warren Buffet starts to talk about raising his "Capital gains" tax rate.

Our state sales tax is 5.125% with additional county/city sales taxes depending on where you live. We're a bit over 8% in Las Cruces. Groceries aren't taxed.
For cars, the tax is 3% of the price paid for the vehicle less any trade-in credit. Don't know the history behind the tax break but that's pretty cheap.

So, the zig zag lanes will be there, just moved down the road. Wonder if it will be done in time for me to see it completed in my life time?

My favorite story on the sales tax finangling goes like this.
In 2001 I purchased a 1997 F150 from a young man. His father bought the truck for him new, when he started college, and he had just graduated, got a good job, and bought himself a brand new truck. The dealer had offered him $9,500 on the trade, and with the sales tax advantage it would have been worth $9,500 * 1.0625 = $10,093. I offered him $10.5 cash, he agreed, and we met up that evening in a parking lot to finalize the deal.
His father was there to sign papers, as the title was in his name. Dear dad was griping and complaining and carrying on that I was paying too little, ripping off his gullible son. I was just going to walk away, but the son told his father to be quiet and sign the papers. So dear old dad signs the title, and then the sales tax affidavit. His last gesture was to fill in $12,500 as the sales amount. He then glares at me and walks away.
His son starts to apologize, and I say (loudly), “No problem, I’ll just forge his signature on another sales tax affidavit.”
You really really shouldn’t embarrass your children, especially not when they’re grown. But people do it all the time, and then wonder why their children only visit them once a year at Christmas.

Here's my favorite car sales tax story and you may remember it.
Back in May of this year we were on this very same subject about taxes on cars. You and poster @js06gv who also lives in Texas (Frisco) had a discussion about sales tax on used cars and I chimed in with the post below about what happened to me in a private sale in 1977.
"In PA you pay sales tax on a car every time it is sold just like in Texas.
Let me tell you a story about this:
In 1977 I bought a '75 Grand Prix as a private sale. When we agreed on the price, I told the guy that when we do the paper work at the bank I wanted him to say that he sold the car to me for less than the actual agreed upon price so that I would save money on taxes. He was very hesitant about doing this but I assured him it's done all the time and as long as he wasn't saying he sold it for some ridiculous low price there would be no problem. I bought his car for $3800 and I'm pretty sure I wanted him to say he sold it to me for $2800 because he should say the car was only in fair condition vs. the very good condition that it was in. Like I said the guy was hesitant but he finally agreed.
Fast forward to when we are sitting at the bank and the loan guy pushes himself away from his desk and says to me and the seller, "now, I'm not supposed to hear what you say to each other but what price do you want me to show as the selling price. This is a pet peeve of mine because the state will get tax money on this car until it goes to its grave. They have already collected taxes when it was sold the first time and now they want more and they are going to get more. So, it's up to you two to determine how much they get this time". The seller looks at me and says, "I guess this does happen all the time" and he tells the bank guy $2800.
This is my favorite story when it comes to collecting taxes on a car."
As for not embarrassing your children, I don't think I do that since both of my Sons and their families always seem to be mooching a meal from us on weekends. I guess this falls into the category of... "no good deed goes unpunished".

Bummer. This year Massachusetts canceled the sales tax holiday. We've been waiting to buy a dishwasher but we have to wait. Some retailers are offering discounts equivalent to the sales tax while others are offering double the sales tax discount to boost sales.
Don't know how if it's political but our new governor said the state is broke and cannot afford such tax giveaways.
Clothes, food and essentials (not sure what all of those are) are not taxed in PA but everything else is fair game.
In PA the state sales tax is 6% but I am honored to live in Allegheny County that has an additional 1% tax. The additional 1% is to pay for the two stadiums that were built for the poor football and baseball team owners. The pathetic part of this 1% tax is that it was put on the election ballot in the early 2000's and the voters in Allegheny County voted not build the stadiums but with political shenanigans the 1% was enacted. Yes, there was outrage but the tax went into effect anyway. If you buy a car in another county or buy out of state, like I have done with my last 3 car purchases, you pay the tax based on the county where you live.
Yep, the politicians know how to cover things like that and voting themselves a raise in the middle of the night (yes, this happened in PA a few years ago) that's about all they know how to do.

With this offer you know how much cash you are going to get because they tell you that up front. However, on these game shows I've seen like The Price is Right, I remember hearing years ago that if you chose the cash, it is not the MSRP nor is it the invoice cost but it isn't even the factory cost either. So, what is the cash value? Is this number made up like on used cars in Texas, a secret handshake or what? I've also heard that if you take the car you can take delivery at a local dealer near you and that I can believe. Off course, you have to pay tax on the winnings but something tells me that in most states the tax will be on the full MSRP.
Does anybody out there know because I plan on a being on a gameshow someday and winning a car so I want to know how to deal with those slimy game show producers. :@ Come to think of it, I think @imidazol97 won a car so he should know something about this.

Yes, indeed. A Mustang Pace Car 4-cyl Turbo, '79. I don't remember how any sales tax was handled. I recall I didn't pay anything to the dealer who had the car for me. I didn't pay anything when I registered the car, so sales tax must have been included in the value the dealer/contest holder declared. The car had been used as a demo since the 4-cyl were slow sellers compared to the V8s. LOL
My new CPA handled the declaration of value for tax purposes very well. He had done a contest winner's reporting earlier and thought it was interesting as a specialty. My dentist had referred me to his CPA--best thing anyone did for me.

Ouch!

I know of someone who bought a brand new RV. Drove to Florida, had an engine breakdown in a god forsaken tiny town in Georgia, had to stay for 3 days while parts were shipped.

It was my understanding that what you describe for NJ is true in any state - if there is a physical presence, then sales tax must be collected, even with on-line purchases.
Which is why I've started to look at Fry's (CA electronics chain) for some of my technology purchases. They also offer free shipping.

Doesn't Mercedes offer roadside service 24-hours a day with your Mercedes. We have 1 MB store in Dayton if you have a flat here.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
BTW, I believe by law we owes sales taxes for items purchased out of state and delivered to our home (or so claims the State Treasurer). The customers don't pay it just because it's unenforceable (state has no way of compelling and out-of-state entity to collect it on its behalf), not because we don't owe it.
The only time they can enforce it is when the item needs to be registered - then they make it a condition of a registration. In other instances, customers could technically deliver the sales tax to the state and county themselves, which of course we all do, just the way Warren Buffet does, when he says he should pay more income tax

In the good old days, mail order businesses would locate in a sparsely
populated no or low sales tax state e.g.
I thought Texas was a cool place to live.

Aiken.

For cars, the tax is 3% of the price paid for the vehicle less any trade-in credit. Don't know the history behind the tax break but that's pretty cheap.

Also, they will never be able to fix that bridge in Cincinnati....and that is only going to get worse. They need to build a bi-pass, or a tunnel. I understand they can't build a new bridge or add lanes, as there isn't enough room.
