I'm about 99% sure that the problem is in your computer, not anything to do with the site. And I am an IT professional, I have made a living off computers since 1972, so you can have a little faith in what I say.
There are many people here who know more about cars than I do, but probably very few who know more about computers.
I would suggest to you that you download ccleaner. Have it clean everything for the browser that you're using, be that IE or Firefox or Chrome or ....
As a self proclaimed "power user" I will 100% agree. That is a nice little program. I also suggest if you are using Internet Explorer, you always have it clear all history, cookies etc when closing (except for favorites). I'm a little ticked at Microsoft for excluding this feature from MS Edge that is pre-loaded on Win 10.
Tonight we were on our way to meet friends for dinner. We were almost there and we came to an intersection, and the light changed to amber. I had a fair bit of time and easily stopped, but a large waste type truck plowed into the back of us. It sent us flying across the road and up onto the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road. Thankfully, we seem to be OK physically, but we are shaken up and very tired. We have dealt with police and the towing company, filed reports, and I was on hold with the the insurance company claim department for about 30 minutes while being told "I am a priority". how long do you wait when you aren't a priority?
Any ideas how you can get fair value for your car.....tow truck driver said don't trust the insurance company.
*Driver, I hope both you and your wife are okay. I was away from the board for the past two weeks totally absorbed with the Rio Olympics and just now catching up with the posts that I missed in the meantime.
Don't know if the insurance company has already settled. More than likely they will offer fair value if deemed a total loss. Not sure how the E-400 ranks in resale value but it should be near the top minimizing your potential loss. Nonetheless, stay safe and minimize night time driving.
I've heard different sources quote anywhere from as low as 50% to as high as 80% of value on the repair estimate in order to get a total. 80% doesn't seem unreasonable with CA labor rates, but that would be on a very old beat up car. On a brand new one I'd like to see 50% used; I'm sure you are probably right and insurance companies will try to avoid replacing your new car if they can make the math work.
The rule of thumb is 70-75% of the vehicle. However it is not unheard of for an insurance company to go the least expensive way
This issue is interesting and important enough to me that I'll go over the fine print of the policy with an agent before my next renewal. I wouldn't want "new car replacement" if that means they are using 75% of the new car cost rather than 75% of my used car value in order to total the car. That would essentially mean the repairs would almost have to exceed the cost of the car before they total it.

There are already people that follow the safe and comfy speed for them rule (ignoring the speed limits for the most part) and those that are rule followers (abiding by the speed limit no matter how ridiculously low it is posted) creating those speed differentials already. Raising the speed limits turns the law breakers into law abiders, and gets the pre-existing law abiders to go faster, which actually REDUCES speed differentials and increases safety.
Logic 101, and proven by many studies as well where speed limits have already been raised.
Not so fast yourself, You forgot the ones that follow the invisible X rule (where X = a set speed above the speed limit), raise the speed limit and these people will increase their speed. Also remember that the people that follow the safe and comfy for them very often drive at or below the speed limit. So raising the speed will have the effect of some people increasing their speed and some people driving the same rate of speed.
Logic 101 and proven by many studies where the speed limits have already been raised.
Where you live they must follow the 85th percentile convention better than in CA. There is no such thing as "people often driving" below the speed limit in CA, unless it is due to heavy congestion or other unusual obstacles. Since speed limits are often set below the 85th percentile here in CA for the sole purpose of revenue generating speed traps, our speed limits are artificially low by and large.
I just don't see the "I go 10 over the speed limit" group being a statistically significant portion of the population. If they raised the speed limit to 90 MPH, there are many cars on the road that would probably struggle to go 100 MPH, and the frugal and/or green people might not go that fast just to save on gas.
Most of my personal experience with higher speed limits comes from Arizona's 75 MPH speed limit and I was able to personally observe the effect of greater compliance and less speed differentials at those locations vs. their locations with 65 MPH speed limits. Unfortunately they don't have a middle ground 70 MPH speed limit. I think anyone paying attention while driving in AZ will agree with me.

I haven't used Ccleaner for a year or two so I grabbed it a couple of weeks ago. On first run it gave me a BSOD.
@isellhondas, didn't @Karen_CM give you a new password? Or did you change that one? Sounds like you need to get some Post'em notes and write all your passwords down and stick them on the screen.

Thanks for writing bwia. Actually, I did take the advice of many here who said to see my doctor. I went yesterday, and he said a fuzzy head was normal because I hadn't slept (I believe it is true I had such an adrenaline rush that youo can't possibly sleep), if I hadn't lost conscious, felt dizzy, felt sick, and if I had no pain that should mean I am OK....but, he is glad I came in.

Insurance company hasn't actually settled yet, but, on the phone they did say we paid for full value coverage, meaning, if your car is in an accident within the first 2 years (car is 22 months old) we will get whatever we paid for the car.
We have chosen a new 2017 E400 and the MSRP was about $400 less than that, however now they give me only 3% off list instead of 4% off.....dealers getting squeezed more.........so now I will be paying out about $300 extra.
Thanks again, I feel pretty much back to normal which to me is a miracle.

I'd ask that dealer to at least make it EVEN-STEVEN; no cash beyond the insurance settlement. Especially considering they won the sale due to someone else driving negligently.

About the insurance.....as far as I know, we have "no fault" insurance, which I assume means my insurance company deals with the other insurance company. My company pays out for the rental car etc., then collects from the at fault driver's insurance company.
I would try not to talk to other guys insurance company, and if you do, I would be so careful what I said because things can be taken out of context so easily.
The more stories I hear on here about insurance companies, the more I appreciate USAA. Usually (but not always) they are the lowest cost provider, and you simply don't get into these silly games. I was run over (twice) within 12 months, I simply reported it to USAA and they took care of everything. The first time, the young woman lied like a rug but her story was so unbelievable that her insurance company accepted responsibility. The second time, I had an eyewitness so there was never any doubt.
USAA gets me a rental car, everything is charged back through them, and my rates don't go up.
Consumer Reports recently did an extensive review of auto insurance companies nationwide and the results were interesting. Most were terrible, but the cream of the crop included USAA and Amica.

Which is a shame as a small wagons are a pretty good utility vehicle while maintaining many sedan qualities.
Some even prefer wagons to sedans as they tend to be slightly better weight balanced for performance purposes. Of course, some argue sedans are a bit stiffer since they can have a structural cross member at the back seat.

Dipped my toe into the new vehicle possibility. Local dealer has a new 2016 Escape Titanium for 25% off list. Sent the salesguy I bought a few vehicles from an inquiry for more details. To be continued...
25% off list is a good deal. The dealer near me still has a few 2016 Titaniums in stock. They are advertising them with $4K off sticker. This one is nice:
Deep Impact Blue - 4WD - 2.0 - Pano Roof - Navigation - Titanium Technology Group.
When will American car companies start pricing fairly and realistically? Haven't they learned anything yet? I mean, they should be able to hit the target plus/minus 10%.
It would help resale not to overprice them as well. Stop the depreciation rate from sticker matching the resale of day old donuts.

Our tow truck driver who also owned a body shop told us - and I am not sure how truthful he was - that the insurance companies wanted him to be a repair depot for them. But, he said, if he had to replace say a grill on a KIA, he would only use original replacement parts, but, the insurance companies will insist on using aftermarket parts.
On another topic one guy made a good point, my banged up car may be worth more as parts then then it would trying to put it back together. Engine and front end should be fine, as well as the interior.
They'll probably saw it in half and weld your front to the back of another that took a front hit. Did any airbags deploy?
Maybe you could get Red Green to duct tape them together.
This reminds me of one time I was looking at expensive VOLK forged wheels that were on a clearance super sale at Tirerack. Unfortunately, they didn't have more than 2 or 3 of the light silver, and 2 or 3 of the dark silver left. When I told a guy about it, he suggested just get 2 of each, and put them 2 on the left and 2 on the right and no one would ever be the wiser as you can't tell they are different from one point of view.

Interesting stand to take. If I was the type of person who had to always come out on top.....unfortunately I have a SIL who has to do that.......then I would have done that.
But, most people like to be reasonable human beings...it keeps us civilized, so, I will have to spend about $300 or $400 to move from a car that is almost 2 years old with 28k miles on it, to a brand new model with 0 miles on it. The dealer does sell another car, but, he is entitled to his profit. And, because we are pretty decent people, I can order the new model with no down payment, for some reason they trust we will pay for the car when it comes in. Not so sure he would do that if I tried to edge him out of his profit!
That doesn't have anything to do with the dealer or their bottom line.

In this particular case, we seem to have come out of it about 100% OK as far as any physical injuries. I doubt if all cars are created equal, some may be better, quite a few probably wouldn't be as good, I know my car made a huge difference. I don't want to buy a car and find out one day it wasn't built to the same standards.
To have made it through a crash like that unscathed says a lot about the way the car was designed. My dealer benefits by selling us another new car, but, in a way he loses, he would have probably made more on my nicely kept trade-in. I know they will do everything possible to make this all work out....say they will get me a rental car if we need one until the new one comes in, etc AND, if for some reason they try to fix my car, they will take it as a trade.....to help me dispose of it. They do as much as a dealer can do for a customer...above and beyond, so, as long as I like their cars the most I will be loyal to my excellent dealer.
tough way to do it, but financially, you are coming out way ahead. Have to imagine if you went in to trade the old one for the new one, you were looking at a 10-15K delta out of your pocket.

Yep, just saw a "make/model saved our lives" type of review the other day about a vehicle that was stopped and plowed into by a semi going 70 mph+. Sure, the dog and back seat passenger died, the driver went to the hospital with serious injuries and you suffered a TBI, so obviously it was the vehicle and not extreme good fortune.
I was a defensive driver when I had that '66 Newport, but those days of having a LOT of iron around you are loooong gone. Can't afford to let your attention wander behind the wheel now. You never know who's NOT driving the cars around you.

Probably $20 to $30k difference with taxes and shipping etc.......lose at least 25% depreciation for the 2 years.
But, I'd rather have done it the usual way....trading it in. Now I have lost all my GPS memory and my hard drive music, as well as Satellite Radio ...............and not being able to use my car.
I wouldn't have wanted to be in any of those cars mentioned when hit by a giant waste removal truck going about 40 mph. People may find examples where their car saved them in a particular incident.....if a car has a 5 star rating it will probably do reasonably well in a similar situation, but for many accidents, the way the car is made, the safety features incorporated, could make a big difference in the injuries one receives. Crumple zones, the electricity being switched off may have prevented the tank from exploding (I just filled it up with $60 worth that morning), and those self tightening seat belts prevent whiplash.
Weight and size of the car are big factors, but, design is also a huge factor in reducing injuries....and people may have stories of being saved in tiny cars, but, it doesn't mean all cars can save you from every accident equally.
Watching a Mecum auction and they just sold a1979 Porsche 930 turbo for $360,000 with--64--- miles!
Don't get me wrong, I still like low miles but to put a car like that up on blocks for 37 years is a crime.
No the real crime is paying $360,000 for that car.
At Legendary Motor Car I saw some Corvettes and Shelbys in the $200+k range, and This 69 Yenko Chevelle which is on sale for $265000. I just don't get it...
I'd rather have this 66 Vette for $80k.....but they have to take off those exhaust pipes, I hate the smell of burning flesh....
speaking of Porsches, must have been a gathering of some sort in my area today. Or, a huge coincidenc.
was on a local 4 lane, and coming the other way, was a string of 14 of them in a row. A mix of newer, and some older ones. a few pre-bumper 911s, and a 914 stuck out. Pretty interesting. .
I usually help folks on the front end of the lease transaction; would be a nice balance to hear some end-of-lease stories, both good and bad.
Speaking of which, what's the percentage of transactions at your dealership, @roadburner, of leases to purchases?
My NCM said the leases make up about 40% of the new car transactions. I know BMW NA has seen leases really pick up over the last few years and most BMW dealers are preparing to sell a lot of the off-lease cars as CPOs.
Now for my unhappy lease customer...
The customer initially showed up at the receptionist's desk and promptly took a large manila envelope-without asking-and stuffed two keys in it, wrote "Lease Return" on it, and signed her name. She started to walk off but our receptionist told her she'd have to have the car inspected- so she called me. The first words out of her mouth were, "I have a flight to catch!" I had problems logging in on the iPad we use for turn-ins, and on top of that the car had several potential issues, so I decided to take the car over to the CPO side and let the used car manager inspect it- he makes the call on whether we keep it or not.
After further inspection the UCM settled on one worn tire and a bumper scratch on the rear bumper(10" long and into the primer)- but the big issue was that the car was overdue for service by over 10,000 miles. The customer swore up and down that the car had been serviced at our center numerous times but the vehicle history showed that she hadn't been to our service department-or any BMW service department-since 2014(and remember that any service work would have been performed at no cost to the customer). BMW FS charges around $800 to the lessee if service is overdue, so she was looking at turn in costs(including the disposition fee) of at least $1400. The customer continued to maintain that the service WAS up to date, even though she had no proof. We asked her to go back to the service department with with us so that we could verify the service history together but of course she couldn't do that because "She had a plane to catch!" She then begin to claim that the car had been pre-inspected and the car had been given a clean bill of health, but again, there was no record of a pre-inspection in the leasing database.
She was adamant that she wasn't going to accept the charge for servicing the car so we offered her a third party inspection through BMW FS- which essentially means that going forward she has to deal with them and not us. After much grumbling she finally took that option- stomping off in a huff proclaiming that she'd never come back to our dealership again. It was all I could do not to say, "Is that a promise?"

That is my thinking.........bmw charged $800 for missing an oil change, but, how does that make it up for the next owner of that car? I suppose the car could be wholesaled and the next buyer buys it as is...no extended warranty. Of course the dealer isn't going to make a huge profit if it is sold at auction. I suppose they can check it out and see if it is still operating at full capacity, and maybe the missed oil change won't be a problem.
Sure don't need another customer like that - and I feel sorry for her poor husband/boyfriend. .
I trust my 2011 Kia Soul with a great safety rating to keep me safe in a wreck than cars made in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's. Seriously - this Kia is so well buttoned down, no shakes or rattles, no "annoying rat-a-tap-tap" noises to irritate or bother me. But round about 2010 and/on it seems most domestic makers (especially Ford and GM) started taking that Gub-Mint handout cash and made their new cars safer to absorb crashes in.
Not that I want to test the little white one out by getting in a wreck...or anything. That's like smacking yourself on your head with a construction hammer - just to enjoy the feeling when the pain goes away. Absurd. But it's good to know that carmakers are designing better crash cages today than ever before to help us live through crashes. And I wanted a '68 Datsun 411 Bluebird a while back - just before the crush on the '16 Scion iA crept in. The 411 would crease and fold, baby...would not be a pretty sight after a large truck smashes into you whilst you sit at a stop light.
Hopefully @driver100 has used up the quota for everyone in here for the next decade. Big pain even if you aren't hurt in the wreck.
IIRC our last wreck that you actually call a cop in to write up a report on was in 2000 in Burlington, WA. Was on a street just off of Fairhaven Ave., I believe, it was a residential street with a Ma and Pa store on it that we had just come out of. I started the '99 Kia Sephia up (yep, that one) , saw the coast was clear and pulled out onto the street. Just as I let the clutch out and entered the street this dude in a long, white Ford pick-em-up truck came barreling up in reverse on me (from his driveway on the other side of the street!!!!!) and smashed in to our left front quarter panel. What the ? Where did he come from?
His wife was trying to sweet talk my wife and I into just "acting as if this was both of our faults". Right. It was his fault, without question, he didn't even look. The Burlington cop interviewed both of us thoroughly - she was a good cop - and agreed, it was his fault. The Sephia was put into the shop and I could never tell where the damage was on that Violet Mist Korean sedan in 5-speeds, no A/C and aftermarket stereo, after the body shop did their job.
But yes, no, I do not want to go through the stress and obnoxiouness of a traffic accident again. Best wishes to you, driver100, for a seamless transition in to your next German rig.

It definitely won't be a CPO car; we will almost certainly let it go back to BMW FS.

RB....Wow! I don't run into those kind of people often, but I have. They take no responsibility, for anything, and expect everyone else to just roll with them on whatever they do, or whatever they say, oblivious to (or dishonest about ) the obvious.
This is the 2017 Kia Soul "facelift." Huh? Apparently the devil's in the details - looks strikingly similar to the 2016 Kia Soul ta me. There's something different about the headlights - need more info. from Corporate on it ta sort it all out. I love the wheels. A newer Kia Soul can not be counted out - but with 71,797 miles on ours it won't be for a while yet. Need ta pay down that balance some, too.
These differences don't show up ta me - especially in these smallish pictures.

*Driver, thank goodness there were no injuries and both you and your wife walked away unscathed. And with MB's obsession with safety that outcome is not surprising.
Can't tell from the picture but did any of the airbags deploy? Or that recognizing that there was no one sitting in the back seat the rear and curtain airbags remained mute.
I was away from the board for the past two weeks totally absorbed with the Rio Olympics and just now catching up with the posts that I missed.
Don't know if the insurance company has already settled. More than likely they will offer fair value if deemed a total loss. Not sure how the E-400 ranks in resale value but it should be near the top minimizing your potential loss. Nonetheless, stay safe and minimize night time driving.

bwia, No airbags went off, and I don't believe they are supposed to as all the impact was from the rear bumper and trunk area. I think the seatbelts really did their job, they tighten up like a straightjacket. You can hardly breathe, and my wife has a bruise where the strap crosses her chest. I think that keeps you from being thrown forward and then back...resulting in whiplash. For some reason the headrests fall apart......maybe it cushions the blow, like a crumple zone for your head.
I don't think airbags would help, and they may make it worse if you could steer, but I think the car shut down.
IMPORTANT QUESTION: I am wondering, are there black boxes in the truck and my car? Can they check to see what speed we were both going, and whether he applied his brakes? Would they use that information to decide on charges?
I think every car has black boxes now. Whether the info is still available is the question - should be for your car since you didn't drive it again. Getting to the info may be too expensive for a "run of the mill" accident unless lawyers start getting involved.

Usage of the device in road vehicles varies widely from manufacturer to manufacturer. General Motors and Ford implement the technology on most of their recent models, while Mercedes-Benz and Audi do not use EDRs at all[citation needed]. As of 2003, there were at least 40 million vehicles equipped with the devices.[5]
and this:
It was not until August 2006 that NHTSA released its final ruling (49 CFR Part 563). The ruling was lengthy (207 pages), consisting of not only definitions and mandatory EDR standards, but also acted as a formal reply to the dozens of petitions received by NHTSA after the 2004 notice.
Since there was already an overwhelming trend for voluntary EDR installation, the ruling did not require manufacturers to install EDRs in vehicles produced for North America. Based on its analysis, NHTSA estimated that by 2010, over 85% of vehicles would already have EDRs installed in them, but warned that if the trend did not continue, the agency would revisit their decision and possibly make installation a requirement.

Not thinking of a lawsuit at this time, as long as there are no hassles. If I get the full cost of the car back, and if we don't have lasting injuries, and if my insurance rates don't increase then I am not out. If the moron cop gives input that I am partially at fault because I didn't know the idiot driving the truck was going to try to beat the light, I'd like some back up information. That's where his speed and whether he hit the gas would help, and they could see what my speed was and when I hit the brakes........it would print a pretty good picture.
One friend has a dash cam and I thought that was a bit much. That would have really helped in this case, but, I would probably show it to a lawyer before I showed it to the cops!

Good article. From it it sounds like it is very likely my car and the truck have some kind of recording device. They gave examples how they have been used in court cases in Canada and the US to assign fault in major accidents....so the information is usable.
I doubt it will be that critical in this situation, but, I would like to know we can get it if we have to.
really needed the dashcam in the truck. Yours would not show much.
I think it would show the green light was on for a long time, the pedestrian signal was flashing in red - Don't Walk, it would show how far away I was when the light went to yellow, and it would show me making a normal complete stop. Then BAM!
I'd be curious to know how long the data store is - just the last 30 seconds or ?
And if it's only 30 seconds, if I rear end someone, maybe I'll shut my car off and then restart it and let it idle a few minutes in the hopes that it erases the speedo reading showing me going 80 in a 30. Assuming there's anything left in the front end to restart.

You see this over and over. Someone gets in a wreck and isn't hurt and thinks it's all because of the particular car they were driving. So they immediately go out and buy the same car.
Maybe it's an opportunity to go test some other brands. Especially if the dealer isn't cooperating.
It would help resale not to overprice them as well. Stop the depreciation rate from sticker matching the resale of day old donuts.

Scares you about what the next person who gets that car is in for..
Of course the dealer isn't going to make a huge profit if it is sold at auction. I suppose they can check it out and see if it is still operating at full capacity, and maybe the missed oil change won't be a problem.
