My wife and I also drove about 1200 miles in an E350 earlier this year. It was pretty good with some weight in it, but 10 hours of torture driving it back empty.
Those bars and center caps on the wheels are lighted blue, aren't they? How do they do that while the wheels rotate? Batteries? "Hey man, can you put a new battery in my left front rim. The LED lights went out."
"Those bars and center caps on the wheels are lighted blue, aren't they?

Imid, those are those new wheels where gerbils run around the inside of each rim. All you have to do to maintain the power is to feed those critters twice a day and clean out the little turds once a week.
Amazing how technology comes to the forefront even in situations like this. Think of it - a GERBIL GENERATOR in each wheel. What will they think of next?!
All U-Haul trucks here have Arizona License plates. That is so they don't have to comply with our anti-pollution laws.
Nah - the reason they have AZ plates is because that's where they are based, the license tax goes down for every year the vehicle is plated in AZ and safety inspections are not required in AZ thus eliminating the logistics of getting vehicles inspected.
As for the ride - it's a 20+ year old body on frame van design. They are loved because they run forever.
Good info, especially no safety checks in Arizona, that sounds a lot more like the reason. So, the rental is cheap but the truck doesn't have to be safety checked....hmmmmm.
They may run forever, but, do you really call that running?
But, the worst is the steering. If you want to know what "feel of the road" is, it is the opposite of this. It is like the steering wheel is detached from the truck. It can move a quarter turn and nothing happens.
The sensation of moving is about it.
I'd rented one of those twice to get junior in and out of apartments at OSU. Our local store owns their two vans. They must be returned to that store. They sell them at low mileage and buy replacements. The manager was my son's cub scout leader, so I learned a lot by listening.
Then last year I rented a 14-foot truck (Ford) with the little volume that hangs over the cab. NO. NO. No. No cruise control. Rough ride empty. Hard to steer and keep in lane on the interstate. I have other rental trucks zooming by at over 65 and I'm toddling along at 60 trying to steer and keep the speed constant without cruise control. I'll do a double trip in the van to avoid renting the 14-foot truck from U-Haul. Maybe Enterprise has cruise control.
Fair enough. But why even present that to the public if it is so over the top? Maybe just to show what can be done and then use the best elements...just not sure why?

Thank all of you who offered advice and information on my questions. I'm always impressed with the breadth of knowledge here.
On the van thing, I own a much older version of that type of van and what driver100 says is true. Terrible road manners but as others said it keeps going forever and takes bouncing through a farm field in stride. Mine needs front shocks so it is like driving a Bouncy House.

Several Turbine cars were provided to the general public for testing as well. Fuel economy and production cost did the gas turbine in as an automotive powerplant.

Oh I wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. At the bottom I said it was a 1964 Dodge Turbine car, and I think it was a concept car. It was tested, some people got them to try, but, it was really a "concept car". The point I was trying to make was that I like the looks of that 1964 "car of the future" much more than the jelly fish cars they call concept cars today.
My little sister spoke to her friend at Subaru Corporate today. So apparently I'm getting a good deal, so my price stands. The car they got for me has a rear bumper appliqué, splash guards, auto dimming mirror with Compass, & a cargo net which they are throwing in. I'm happy with the deal I'm getting, buying from a great dealership, an easy to work with salesman, & it looks like "new car day" will be Saturday afternoon. I'm so excited!

They actually built a run of 50-some Chrysler (not Dodge) Turbines and assigned them to members of the general public who had applied to drive them for a period of weeks. I have a book written about the whole business here. The styling was very well-received and the cars were real news items for the people who got them. They were all painted "Turbine Bronze" and Chrysler used the paint color for a few years later on their regular lineup. There are still a few in museums.

Happy New Year, Brad! This year is going to be sweet with that "honey" of a Suburu!
I created a blueprint for a Gerbil-Amphetamine Engine but couldn't find any investors
Think of it - a GERBIL GENERATOR in each wheel. What will they think of next?!
Don't they get dizzy when the wheel goes around and 'round?

I plan to go shopping again this weekend. If someone would ever come and buy one (or both, fine by me!) of my spare cars, I could actually do it.
touched up the scratches on the TL today. after the monsoon tomorrow, I will give it a wax and detail the interior, then that ad goes up Friday. I will take the Volvo shopping, and will get a trade in quote just for the heck of it.

Back when I was a service advisor at a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer in Massachusetts in the late '80's, an older red headed woman came in saying she wanted to get her nephew's Plymouth Laser repaired.
We got to talking, and come to find out she was one of the folks who got to drive the Chrysler Turbine car for a while. I can't remember what she thought about the experience, other than the attention it got. I think she mentioned that it was pretty loud, and something about the hot exhaust coming from the back.
I asked her how she was chosen to get one, and she said "Well I was in a few movies". Me, being in my 20's and not recognizing her, said "Have you been in anything I would know?"
She started listing off movies, a few with John Wayne.
It ends up that it was Maureen O'hara. I was pretty embarrassed, but she was really cool, and just laughed.

Ummm... no. The Chrysler bears no resemblance whatsoever to the 1958 "Square Bird;" The Chrysler Turbine car shared styling cues with the 1964 T Bird Landau:
The car was acquired by my dealer via dealer swap. I'll find out where it comes from on Saturday. Even if I were to order a car from the factory, they told me 8 - 12 weeks. They said 8 weeks if they could get a car already in production allocated to them. Don't forget, you custome ordered a $70 something thousand dollar Mercedes-Benz E400. Mercedes' color combination & option list is surely much longer than Subaru's. Happy New Year to you & your family as well!

Thanks Bradd. He's going through quite a bit. Spoke with him this evening - he has burn marks on his scalp from the radiation and sores in his mouth. That radiation is dangerous stuff. Still getting sick from the treatments. I just wish I could do something for him.
Your prayers, I am sure, will be heard by the Lord of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - he sure could use a break. Thanks Bradd.
This will be a bit hard to answer, but, is there a reason you chose the GM over the others, or was it an automatic choice?
My choice of Ford over Chevy or GM was also related to the square lines. Ford is just a little more square than the others. Also, no one makes a red color to match Ford. I've noticed that for years. Still, all three makes are quality trucks. What amazes me about today's trucks is that you get so much luxury and interior room for the price. I also love the visibility because you are elevated.
Richard
I like the square lines of the F 150 as well. Also the squared off and neat looking instrument panel. The square lines are even carried into the interior, with the seats and doors all having square styling. And, since I am "vision obsessive", I think the way the front side windows dips is a nice touch.
Your picture reminded me of something else. The blue lights for the dash are much more restful at night than the white or red. Thanks for the article on breaking in a new car. I'm not babying my truck, but I'm not dogging it either. I'm allowing it to get used to me as I get used to it.
Finally, I now know what you mean by the "feel of the road". With the truck, I can actually feel parts of the road, but it isn't a bumpy ride. It's not a Cadillac ride; it's just comfortable while letting you know that the road is there. I can see now why it was difficult for you to explain it. Another thing that I like about the interior is the materials. They don't look cheap and have a nice tasteful look.
My wife was pleased today. One of her friends said that my new truck was so tasteful that it went well with our historic home. Who would have thought someone would notice that?
If I end up with a Legacy, unless I get in a situation where I need it really quick, I will order one. All the stock units around here tend to have a number of accessories already loaded on (factory). Subaru actually has a long list of stuff you can add, and from what I have seen, I want about $200 of the $700 usually already included.
I do need this real world report though. if Bradd likes it and it works for his drive, and the MPG is legit, it would work fine for me.
Finally caught up with 21 pages of posts. Just wanted to mention a couple of things.
1. Mike, I do hope that your son can tolerate the new treatments and that he will get better as each day goes by. You're on my prayer list.
2. Stickguy, I was sorry to read about your mother. As time goes by, may the fond memories of her sustain you.
3. Nyccarguy: Congratulations on the purchase of your new Legacy. That was one of the vehicles on my short list before I found the truck. They're nice cars and have very good ratings. Hope you enjoy it.
4. Snake: I was the one who purchased the Invicta watch while on a cruise last Christmas. It was listed at $1,000 and I picked it up for $200. It's very handsome and I do get a lot of nice comments about it.
5. Steve: You mentioned using epoxy for a garage floor. I did that in our last home in Pinehurst. We selected a beautiful tan color and used subdued jewel flecks in the epoxy. I have to tell you that the expensive project was a total disaster. After a couple of months, it all began to chip away. Also, the cars made black tire marks on it. Our painter tried to do a good prep job before applying the epoxy, so I really can't fault him for what happened. Personally, I'll never do a garage floor like that again.

@sterlingdog - thanks for the floor comments. I noticed one chip during the home inspection (barely noticeable, but I spotted it). This one has the flecks in it too. Not sure how long ago it was put down; maybe it was part of the staging of the home? I'm just going to enjoy it while it lasts.
(We actually loved the few pieces of furniture in the house and asked our agent about them. He called the listing realtor and said it was staged. Bummer. Then a few days ago we get an email from the sellers out of the blue asking if we would like to buy the furniture. They'd cut the price a bit from what they would list it on craigslist to avoid having to deal with that. We said sure! They also said their agent would frown if he knew that they'd emailed us, potentially doing something to kill the deal. But we love the house and the sellers sound nice. Need to ask them if they are dumping a Miata too, lol.)
In the latest issue of Consumer Reports Magazine several reader solicited questions were answered by Mary including one about Cadillac.
Q. "I grew up thinking Cadillacs were the standard for luxury. I've driven most of today's models, and I feel like I'm driving rebadged Chevys: They aren't any quieter and don't ride any better than the less costly cars. How can you make Cadillac an elegant luxury brand that consumers will aspire to own? --Bill Shoffner, Burlington, NC "
A. "Cadillac did set the standard for luxury cars for decades; then, for a time, they were good but not always great, especially compared with some of the cars coming from out of Germany. Some were also too similar to Chevrolets, as you point out.
But we've been investing billions of dollars (literally) in performance, safety, and technology to make Cadillac a true luxury leader. The new CTS, for example, is built on weight-optimized, rear-wheel-drive architecture; it's the lightest car in its segment, making it more agile and fun to drive than top competitors.
The sales and service experiences also must measure up; Cadillac dealers, with GM help, have invested millions in facilities both beautiful and functional."

My BIL (not to be confused with "the SIL") painted the garage floor in our Florida home with bright sky blue paint with flecks of gold, white, black) It looks great and no problems to date. Looks like there are other factors that could affect the application.
That's a great deal when you can get the furniture already there, especially if you like it. Our Florida place was furnished and it made it so much easier to get started....though some things we just had to change. It's a win - win when it works! Good luck on the Miata!

Ummm, I don't think that the sales and service measure up in my local dealer. Up here in Burlington VT the Caddy dealer is with the GMC and Chevy dealer. The service waiting room is horrible and the dealership is old school. I guess they still have more work to do!
That is really interesting. I got to 18 minutes out of 24, and have to go to play tennis. But, I'll watch the rest when I get back...I found it interesting. I like when they unveil the car to the Chrysler execs and they are all wearing suits and real hats.......we've come a long way.

Yes, it is the same here. The last time I had the Buick into my dealer for service they were overrun with Cobalt, G5 and Ion owners getting their ignition switches replaced. My service writer even said he had no idea there were so many Ions on the roads around here as they all seemed to come to them. It was bad enough dealing with that as a Buick owner but if I had just spent $70K on a Cadillac there I would be even less impressed. The service reception is tiny and old, and the customer waiting area is a corner of the showroom, open to it all, with a TV usually playing the daytime talk shows blaring away. Really not a pleasant experience.
Ms. Barra has a LOT to do if they are serious about making Cadillac a direct competitor to M-B and others.

That sounds great! You are so excited your words seem to be jumping off my screen. Brad, you deserve this - you have been so patient throughout this entire process.
Happy New Year, Brad! This year is going to be sweet with that "honey" of a Suburu!

touched up the scratches on the TL today. after the monsoon tomorrow, I will give it a wax and detail the interior, then that ad goes up Friday. I will take the Volvo shopping, and will get a trade in quote just for the heck of it.

All Cadillacs will go to the new nomenclature as they are redesigned.
Thanks for the kind words Mike. Happy New Year to you & your family as well. I'm actually going to temple tomorrow, so I'll make sure to pray for you, your son, & a better 5775!

I do need this real world report though. if Bradd likes it and it works for his drive, and the MPG is legit, it would work fine for me.

Wishing a Shana Tovah, a happy, healthy and sweet New Year from myself and my family to all those here who celebrate!
Mike - I'll say a prayer for your son tomorrow.
You lucky devil! She was such a neat person.

Mary Barra responds to Cadillac question.
It looks more like the 64 T-Bird, but since the Chrysler Turbo was a 64 model they must have copied an earlier version of T-Bird.

Looks like there are other factors that could affect the application.
That's a great deal when you can get the furniture already there, especially if you like it. Our Florida place was furnished and it made it so much easier to get started....though some things we just had to change. It's a win - win when it works! Good luck on the Miata!

Except that photo is of a 1966 T Bird. They didn't offer those landau tops in 1964 or 1965. Personally I never liked that look.
