Speaking of extended warranties - why are CPO warranties often better  (at least longer) than the original new car factory warranty?

Now, thinking about it -- i just answered my question -- the warranty cost is baked in the price of the CPO in the first place.

As they say there is no free lunch

Additionally, the CPO warranties are based on a TOTAL of "6 years or 100,000 miles" whichever comes first.  That means a CPO vehicle is warranted until the vehicle itself is 6 years old and up to 100,000 TOTAL miles.  So a 3 year old CPO vehicle with 35,000 miles on the odometer is warranted for 3 more years or 65,000 more miles.

Mercedes offers an unlimited mileage warranty for a set number of years which is a much better warranty than most manufacturers offer onCPO's.

I'd rather get unlimited years instead of unlimited miles. My Ford has less than 9000 miles as it approaches 2 years old.

Regarding a 7 year/75,000 mile extended bumper-to-bumper warranty (3 more years or 27,000 more miles over the basic bb warranty, assuming I drive 12,000 miles per year) it would cost me $5100 if I buy the contract from BMW before my odometer hits 20,000 miles. And remember, that does not include extended service and maintenance which would cost $1500 more. That is quite a chunk of change - agreed?

It might be worthwhile assuming I can hold onto this car until it is almost 2 years old. At that time, I probably will know more about what my future would look like. If the car is running great, I'll make the decision then. If it's not running great - I would hesitate keeping it longer than the basic warranty.

if the price is the same up to 20,000 miles, might as well wait until the end before doing anything.

$5k?!? Wow. Such high odds that it will break after the factory warranty ends would make me not buy the car in the first place.

How likely is a $5100 repair to occur? Are there any known problem areas that you can cost out?

Speaking of warranties, when my mom bought a Camry in 2009, she bought an additional warranty (she didn't tell me this til long after she bought the car). The warranty is now expired, and of course she never had a need to use it. Maybe the only person to buy extra warranty with a Camry. Peace of mind, I guess.

That is a fun story of running into an old flame. I can be terrible with faces, I have ran into a few people I knew in high school over the years, and it took me awhile for things to catch up.

When I go walking at the mall in Boca Raton, I sometimes stop at the frozen yogurt store to get 6-7 ounces of "no sugar added" coffee or vanilla yogurt and I sprinkle on sliced almonds to give it a crunchy texture.

So at about 11:15 AM, I get my frozen yogurt and I sit down to enjoy it.  This woman walks into the store, sits down at my table and starts to stare at me.  She looked to be in her late 60's or early 70's, blond (dyed of course) hair, slim. And not unattractive.  After about a minute of this, I politely asked if I could help her.  She then says, "...Michael, I want a cup of vanilla with chocolate fudge and peanuts on top, no whipped cream!"  I asked her why I should buy her frozen yogurt and then asked her how she knew my name.  She responded, "...so you don't recognize the person who took your vitginity almost 60 years ago - shame on you, Michael ------- (last name withheld for obvious reasons)!

Good grief - I then remembered who she was - my first real girlfriend in 9th grade.  It seems she moved to Boca Raton last year after her husband passed away.   Of course I bought her a vanilla frozen yogurt with fudge and nuts "sans" whipped cream and we had a good 1/2 hour of conversation and updates since we last saw each other over 1/2 a century ago.  What a small world!

And of course we exchanged phone numbers - for good old times!!!   :D:DB)

A few Honda dealers in the North East sell Hondacare warranties really cheap. I believe Honda made them quit selling on line maybe 2 years ago but they still sell cheap on the phone. Dealers like Saccucci in RI and Hyannis Honda sell extended warranties at cost. I saw an article a few years ago that said that even thought they sold at cost they received a bonus from Honda of around $300K each quarter because of the huge volume of Hondacare sales.
When we bought our Oddy van we could get an 8 year 120k from them for $1230 when the local dealer wanted $2500 for the same.

I actually went to a high school reunion about 12 years ago......I hadn't seen all my classmates for over 40 years.

I wouldn't have recognized any of the ex-cheerleaders - that's for sure. I wouldn't have had a chance to go out with them in high school....I probably could ask them out now and they would go.

I was next to a guy I knew back in school and a young girl came over to him and said her mother was too shy to come over and see him, but, wanted to know why he turned her down for the Sadie Hawkins dance 40 years ago?
He said it was a tough time for him, a death in the family and he just didn't feel up to going, btw this girl was extremely pretty at the time and still was.

She wanted to pick up from where they left off and I think he was crazy but he turned her down....said their lives were way too different for him, she liked travelling around the world and dining at nice restaurants, and he wanted to just play sports and have a quiet retirement.

In New York City back in the 1950's and 1960's, Junior High School covered grades 6-9.  High Schools were grades 10-12.  When I completed 9th grade, I entered Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan.  I lived in Queens.  Stuyvesant was a special high school (boys only) that required an entrance exam + you had to have an IQ over 130 (2 standard deviations above the mean (100 is the mean).  The standard deviation is 15.

She went to a local high school in Queens so we did not socialize in the same groups.  Most of my high school buddies lived in all 5 boroughs of New York City (Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, The Bronx and Manhattan).  It was like a "magnet" high school as were Brooklyn Tech and Bronx High School of Science.  To get into those specialized schools, you had to apply, take the 2-hour entrance exam, go for an oral interview and also have a high IQ.

So I began dating girls who lived in all five boroughs because my friends were from all 5 boroughs.

But 9th grade sure was GREAT in more ways than most boys my age would have thought!   B)

Yes, she was about 1-1/2 years older than I was.  I skipped the 8th grade (I was in a class called SP's, or Special Progress).  We studied 7th grade and 1/2 of the 8th grade curriculum in grade 7 and the other 1/2 of the 8th grade and all of the 9th grade curriculum in 9th grade.  So I was in 7-SP1 and the next year I was in 9-SP1.

I had known her since 6th grade and we coupled up when I hit 9th grade.  I'll tell you this - she knew a lot more than I did when we were a couple!!!  :o

There is a new building now about 6-7 blocks away from the original school and it is now coed.

I agree Shifty.  With all the technology in my car + the power trunk and power rear and side sunshades alone would cost big bucks to repair or replace.  If I keep this car, I would definitely need an extended warranty.

Some peoples looks don't change all that much and I seem to be one of them. Keeping your hair helps a LOT. I can't tell you how many people over the years have come up to me and said, "aren't you jmonroe, I'm XXX"? It is embarrassing because sometimes I don't even remember their name let alone what they used to look like.

A few years ago I went with Mrs. j to her 50th high school reunion. I did not graduate from that high school but I went to grade school with a lot of her classmates from another feeder school till 8th grade before my family moved from the Burgh to the suburbs.

When we were checking in a women at the desk that was passing out the name tags looked up and said, "hi jmonroe, you won't even need this because you haven't changed a bit". I took it as a complement but Mrs. j just had to put in a dig saying, "oh I wouldn't say that. He's changed a bit since I first met him and not for the better either". What I thought was my pal at the desk replied, "I was just talking about his looks not his demeanor. I'm sorry to hear he still has a problem with that". :o

I don't do Facebook or any of those sites so I'm sure that's why I don't stay in touch.

:D:DB)

Reminds of an old episode of 2 1/2 men when Charlie was waiting at a bar to meet an old flame Jill. But to his surprise that old flame turned out to be a man. Jill had gender reassignment surgery and even went on to date Charlie's mother.

So Mike, since you did not readily recognize this person could she have been one of your old 9th grade class mates? After all you said you went to an all boys school. Interesting.

    @bwia,
I appreciate your 'out of the box' thinking.
OTOH, I'm hoping you are referencing a 2 1/2 men episode because you just happened to catch it. :)

On May 31st I will be getting together with the guys from the old neighborhood....for the 5th year in a row. These are guys I knew from the beginning until we all split for college or university. Most years we get between 14 to 18 guys. Most became teachers and principals, some engineers, one judge, a few businessmen.....all turned out to be nice guys. Just one was a murderer, murdered a girlfriend and also killed a friend who was a passenger in his car....did that while DUI. He hasn't been invited and doesn't know about our annual get together....and hopefully doesn't find out.

How likely is a $5100 repair to occur? Are there any known problem areas that you can cost out?

I don't know how "likely" a $5100 repair would be on that car, but IF it needed a repair, it would likely be $5100. :p

I agree Shifty.  With all the technology in my car + the power trunk and power rear and side sunshades alone would cost big bucks to repair or replace.  If I keep this car, I would definitely need an extended warranty.

A $5100 repair on 3 out of 4 of my vehicles would result in them being left on the side of the road.
