I reminded myself of the joke about the guy who was talking to his friend about the lady psychiatrist who was counseling him. "She told me I was lazy, arrogant and narcissistic. I'm pretty sure she was hitting on me".

Kirstie is busy excelling in another department so I don't think even bagels will bring her back. So....This is as good as it gets. Grief counseling is available.
:'(   :'(   :'(  Do you see how grief stricken I am.  I can't get passed the denial phase.  How could I have spent so much money on a new car?  No normal human being would choose a $92,000 car over a nice down payment on a townhouse.

Shifty, bring on the grief counseling - quick - I'm fit to be tied!  :'(

Anyone driven a '17 Golf R around here? Impressions?

Didn't drive it, but saw it at a couple different VW dealerships the last few weeks. Beautiful with the new Pretoria wheels. I don't like how they ALL have nanny driving assistance aids now, and also how that breaks up the front grill for the big sensors, and how it makes it more expensive.

I also have read tons of reviews, and know a bit due to my somewhat similar TTS.

The Golf R has to be the ultimate utilitarian sport-car hatchback! The Focus RS might be faster (if you don't tune it), but Focuses get tore up in reliability reviews, and are said to be quite harsh for daily driving. Also, the Golf R interior is a nice place to spend time. I recommend the Stage 1 tune highly unless you have no need for more power. To me, the tune just fixes what the EPA and CARB ruin for USA models (not to mention our lame gasoline).

Wow!  Please pass along my regards to stever!

The Golf R is amazing. However for the money, I would also look at an Audi S3. Typically there is no discount on the Golf R and there is on the S3, so the delta between them is not as much as you'd think.

The talk about first car you had with AC reminded me of the last car we had without AC. It was an 86 Sentra, and in 1988 we were expecting daughter #1 and had the hottest summer EVER. The wife spent a LOT of time in the basement, and from her tone of voice, I understood at a very primal level that every car from then on was going to HAVE AC in it. )

First car with AC..., Mustang Grande 1970 with houndtooth checked cloth seats and a half vinyl roof, front half. I cannot remember what color the car was. I think it was dark blue. It was a luxury car, according to the brochures.

Dad had a metallic brown Grande that I pretty much destroyed, sad to say...

You can't remember the color of your Mustang? That is sacrilegious!

It must have been medium bright blue iridescent. That's a mouothful.
It had a lot of glittering small reflecting granules in it. I really liked that in paint.

My first Mustang, 1967, was dark moss green poly
which had a lot of glitter chips in it that were brass colored
and looked good with the dark, dark green.

First car with air conditioning? Hmmm... I think that would be the 1973 Mazda station wagon. A very weird little car, which I did not keep for very long.

No, wait, the 69 Charger 440 RT had A/C. Which I threw away the first time I rebuilt the engine. All that stuff (compressor, freon lines, ...) was just in my way. And added weight.

Did we ever get an answer?

Alternators are used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and to power the electrical system when its engine is running.

Until the 1960s, automobiles used DC dynamo generators with commutators. With the availability of affordable silicon diode rectifiers, alternators were used instead. This was encouraged by the increasing electrical power required for cars in this period, with increasing loads from larger headlamps, electric wipers, heated rear windows and other accessories.

Vehicle alternators were first used by the military from WWII, to power radio equipment on specialist vehicles.[i] Post-war, other vehicles with high electrical demands, such as ambulances and radio taxis, could also be fitted with optional alternators.[1]

Alternators were first introduced as standard equipment on a production car by the Chrysler Corporation on the Valiant in 1960, several years ahead of Ford and General Motors.[1][2]

My older brother also had one, bought new in 1962. He let me drive it to college to register for my sophomore year in 1962, about 180 miles round trip. Black with red vinyl, just like the pic. I remember this vividly because on the drive home, by myself, the fog was so thick you could only see a few feet. It was hard to even see the tail lights of someone in front of you, and it was like that most of the trip. I thought it was a great car, but all cars were great to me back then.

Was at the podiatrist yesterday afternoon - he gave me another shot of cortisone and added a little lanocane for pain relief. I still have problems so he is sending me for an X-ray as well as physical therapy. It is his opinion that the Achilles tendon is too tight from my calf to the bottom of my foot causing inflammation and pain. He believes it is from being in bed for 10 weeks in hospitals and rehab centers.

I asked him if it is OK to walk through the pain, if possible, and he said yes - the more exercise I get and the more stretching I do, the less the pain will be. But he wants an X-ray to make sure it isn't something more severe. He showed me where the tendon(s) bulge out from the muscles and skin showing how tight they are. Never a dull moment. So I am going for the X-ray Monday morning and therapy starting next week or if I go up to see my brother, when I get back. He has a bad cold (I get sick every time I used to fly in a plane) which is where he was over the last 10 days.

C'mon J, are you're really asking a question here? I don't even read things like that - goes to trash without reading. I'm sure when you dig, you'll find out it's not Amazon, who sent you the message. Just because it says sent from "Amazon", doesn't mean it's a real one. When dig into the sent position, you'll see a completely random email address that could be from anywhere - usually spoofed by the sender.

You never ever click on links from email, unless you are 150% certain of their origin. Always log into the website from your own bookmark.

BTW, you can't even totally trust Google's search results - just heard of fraudulent "facebook customer service number" listed on their top search. Very disconcerting that Facebook doesn't care enough to monitor that. BTW, they don't have a customer service line for regular users, which is probably why such a scam was even possible at the first place.

Dino, good info. A neighbor/friend in Florida had a problem with their apple computer. They went to a site advertised under Apple in their Google search. They got some guy who had a heavy Indian accent who wanted them to use their credit card to pay upfront, and then they would go on their computer and do as he instructed. They realized just in time that this didn't sound right.

JMonroe doesn't usually get back to us until later in the day, I think he usually waxes his car from about noon until around 5 p.m.

Put on your shopping hat and go buy some Skechers go walk 2 or go walk 3 shoes. These are the easiest shoes on your feet that you can find. They are very inexpensive, $60. $70. dollars. Some you can find on Amazon. Problem with Amazon, you can't try them on, etc. Many retail stores have them, also there are stand alone Skechers stores, outlets, etc. Try on a pair, walk around some and you will be sold. Definitely help those sore heels.

Poor grammar was a dead giveaway it's a phishing scheme. On top of that, PayPal is responsible for your account with them....not Amazon.

PayPal has a phishing report email you can send the link to.

Yesterday I was amazed to see the new issue of Collectible Automobile on the magazine stand at the supermarket. Normally all they have are things I would never read. I bought it and was browsing it last night. I was stunned to learn that in the early '60s Chrysler did a model for a fastback Valiant coupe on the original body. Had never seen or heard of that before. It was reminiscent of the proposed fastback coupe version of the '62 Fury that also never debuted. It actually looked better to me than the eventual '64-'66 Barracuda or the actual Valiant coupe they ultimately went with.

I thought you forgot about this.

Can you explain what is meant by, "With the availability of affordable silicon diode rectifiers, alternators were used instead". With inflation, is this still true today? :o

I think that is a trick question. I refuse to answer under the grounds this may incriminate me.

I have no idea what that means. Wild guess, they are probably used today because they are much more efficient at producing the amount of electricity needed for todays cars. But, what do I know, my expertise is in books!

I can make a deal on an R from the dealer my son bought his GTI from. Plus, they offer free scheduled oil changes and tire rotations for as long as you own the car.

They come one way......loaded. I like them.
Gets great review on Edmunds 4.5 out of 5 with a lot of 5s.

Doesn't sound like it will drive like your father's Cadillac...or any Cadillac for that matter.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in Skechers.
Thanks, Houdini, for the info.  Podiatrist suggested Brooks running shoes so I went over to Dicks today to try them.  Average pricing was $125-$145 a pair.  They provide heel and arch support - very rigid.  I found them not wide enough.  When I am at the mall tomorrow I will try on a pair of Sketchers.  It's not comfort so much as support he is insisting on.

I wear Rockport walking shoes and have several pairs.  He said they were good shoes, but he said they don't give sufficient support for arch.  I'll let you know how they feel.

New Balance running shoes come in a wide (ahem) variety of widths and are the only ones that generally ft me well.

Sketchers don't have the support for problem feet. Generally New Balance will work well and are recommended by podiatrists. Expense doesn't matter if you can't walk. Roadrunner Sports will also make custom insoles for your shoes based on the level of support you need. Don't know if they have them in your state.

My great uncle on my mother's side of the family married a nurse who lived in Punksatawnee PA.  She was my aunt Molly.  I remember the stories she would tell me and my twin brother about the Ground Hog Day Celebration each year.  Now remember, she was a Great Aunt - she was in her 60's when I first met her.  She and my Great Uncle Al retired to Hialeah, FL, which is where I first met her.  She was an RN at Mercy Hospital.

I remember one story she told about a Ground Hog Day when Punksatawnee Phil bit the mayor of the city on his nose.  My aunt said he bled so bad she ran over to give him first aid.  They had to take him to the hospital the bite was so bad - took off part of his nose.  Those varments can be pretty nasty when awakened from their winter hibernation.

Jmonroe, you live in the Burg - not too far from Punksatawnee- ever been there on Groundhogs Day?   ;)

PS - did I spell Punksatawnee correctly or is it Punxsutawney?  :o
